Once Upon a Time's Ginnifer Goodwin on Snow and Charming's 'bittersweet' goodbye

Snow White and Prince Charming got their happy ending after all.

During Once Upon a Time‘s season finale, the future looked grim for everyone. The Black Fairy had unleashed a curse that separated a now memory-wiped Emma (Jennifer Morrison) from her family, who were sent back to the Enchanted Forest as the realms began to crumble at Emma’s lack of belief in fairy tale characters.

As the curse overtook the Enchanted Forest, Charming (Josh Dallas) nearly died climbing back down a beanstalk with Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), but Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) found him and — in a scene echoing their true love’s kiss from the pilot — was able to revive him with a smooch.

Ultimately, Rumple (Robert Carlyle) killed the Black Fairy, while Emma sacrificed herself to prevent Gideon from turning dark. Echoing the climax of the season 1 finale, Henry’s kiss resurrected Emma, and the storybook ended, making the heroes realize they get their happily ever after. For Snow and Charming that meant living in Storybrooke, with Snow back to teaching and her family all together. Even though the heroes are missing in action when an adult Henry’s (Andrew J. West) daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) tracks him down 10 years in the future, for now, the Charmings have their happy ending.

The finale comes in the wake of the news that Goodwin, along with Dallas, Morrison, Emilie de Ravin, Jared Gilmore and Rebecca Mader, will not be returning to Once Upon a Time as series regulars next season. In an email interview, Goodwin exclusively tells EW about the impetus behind her — and real-life husband Dallas’ — exit.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What came with the decision to leave Once Upon a Time?
GINNIFER GOODWIN: What came with the bittersweet decision to give these characters a happy ending — and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for that — is room for a new story to grow and flourish as Snow and Charming’s did.

What was that conversation like with Josh when you guys were deciding this would be your final season?
“Hey, let’s call Eddy and Adam to talk about where our very special arc is headed.” — Ginny
“What a wonderful notion, Ginny. You have EXTRAORDINARY ideas! And have I told you lately that you’re ALWAYS right?” — Josh

How do you feel about how the story ends for Snow and Charming?
Selfishly, I’m pleased as punch. They got exactly what they wanted: dramatic, epic love balanced with normalcy (Snow’s word) and the space to indulge in both. Actually, it’s not an “end.” The final chapter of this story line is a continuation… which is kind of Snow’s own point in the finale.

Would you return in the future — either next season or for whatever ends up being the series finale?
In keeping with the aforementioned continuation-as-happy-ending, OF COURSE I (and we) will be back. It’s merely time for ONCE to focus on something new because ONCE does “new” extremely well.

When you look back at your time playing Snow, is there anything in particular you’re proud of, a moment that will stick with you?
I’m most proud of taking the job in the first place. That pilot was so refreshing and inventive and not-done, which could have been a recipe for disaster. But I took the plunge and was rewarded immeasurably. And as for moments, everything about “Snow Falls,” in which the Charmings fell in love, will stick with me. And I won’t ever forget sitting on a Neverland log with Emma, who found herself by admitting to herself that she was a Lost Boy. I also won’t let go of the scene in which Regina first ripped out Mary Margaret’s heart and then put the thing back in again, all while standing at Regina’s front door.

Do you have any regrets? Anything you wish you had done differently? Anything you’re glad to give up?
I wish I hadn’t been so hard on myself when I had trouble concentrating at work after having my first baby and learning what it is to be up all night… forever. As for wishing I had made different ACTING choices: Oh yes, all the time, and that’ll probably never change.

How do you think Snow has changed over the years?
I think she let more and more of Mary Margaret in.

How do you think you’ve grown and changed during the run of the show?
I’ve learned and learned and learned as an actress and teammate. And, I mean, look at my life! Over the run of this show, I met Prince Charming, fell in love, got married, and had two babies. It doesn’t get better than that.

How did it feel returning to the pilot in many ways, shooting Snow and Charming’s true love’s kiss, but in reverse?
Since I’m so nostalgic about the pilot, it was a gift. And in true ONCEfashion, the narrative was twisty-turny, which was invigorating and fun. And after that many episodes, “fun” is an exception to the general rule.

What’s next for you?
I’m performing in the play Constellations at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. It’s one of, if not THE, most challenging, demanding role I’ve ever tackled and I’m doing it live, so I’m shaking in my freaking boots, which is AWESOME. I’m completely infatuated with the writing. I adore everyone involved — ridiculously talented Allen Leech costars — I try not to fangirl out over the Downton of it all— and I’m director-crushing on Giovanna Sardelli. I’d been obsessing over a homesickness for theatre when this came into my life (which is all very ONCE UPON A TIME.)

What would you like to say to the fans who have followed you on this journey?
Thank you.

hi! that fic rec list you wrote out was very thorough and i was wondering is you could add some more! i think what the fandom needs right now is a much good fic as possible.

I agree w you, doll!! and this fandom is blessedly full of good fics (seriously I’ve read a lot of fics from a lot of fandoms and I’ve never read as many beautiful ones as I have in the CS fandom) I was asked by @e98mh for a list w a lot of Captain Ducking so I’m gonna include as much of that as possible ~previous list~

Beyond the Horizon by @alexandralyman: Princess Emma’s ship is captured by the pirate Captain Killian Jones. She offers herself for ransom in place of her crew’s safety. It’s a beautifully written story. I’ve been following it for about two yrs now and boy has it been a wild ride. It’s a moderately slow burn and the payoff is spectacular. 212k words. Rated M. Another sinfully delightful fic by the same author is Between Heaven and Hell. An angel/demon AU, Emma’s the Angel, Hook’s the demon. Full of smut and forbidden romance. 113k words. Rated M.

I am mind boggled that I somehow left @this-too-too-sullied-flesh off the last list because I mean come on how to you have a fic rec list w out her? (smdh @ myself) The Next Wounded Soul: Killian, a sailor recovering from wounds received during the war against the Dark One, is aided by a noblewoman, who’s exact identity he is unaware of. A Captain Duckling fic full of slow burn, mutual pining goodness, bedsharing and foulmouthed princess Emma. 41k words. Rated E. Also of note, possibly my favoritest smut of all time, Theoretically: Let’s just put it this way, for Emma’s 30th birthday, Killian gives a gift that she will never forget. 36k Rated E.

Walking on Water by @msstarlight: Captain Duckling AU. Princess Emma, on her way to meet a powerful nobleman to help aid her kingdom in the ogre war, is kidnapped by…. you guessed it! pirate captain Killian Jones, set on avenging his brother’s death. Twisty and turny and the best kind of drama, that at one point, forces Killian to chose between vengeance and love. Ya wanna read it don’t ya? Some nice Captain Charming moments as well. An overall excellent fic. *side note: I wouldn’t say for certain that it was the first (I was horrible at clicking the follow button and would always have to go back and search for fics for new chaps lol) but it was definitely one of the first multi-chapter fics I started following for this pairing and it has a very special place in my heart. 138k words. Rated M.

Under the Crimson Flag by @a-fictional-life : Captain Ducking AU feat. an arguably bi Killian. Emma Swan disguises herself as a boy to escape upon the open seas but her ship crosses paths with Captain Hook’s. This is just like a really freaking good fic. I’ve read it multiple times and each time reading it is as good at the last. Family feels abound. 98k words. Rated M.

I’m gonna include some fics by @caprelloidea because by golly her writing is breathtaking. It’s captivating, her imagery lifelike, and I’m never disappointed after reading something of hers. Also, maybe an odd thing but I love her titles. Duodenary (the link to this is a stunning graphic of the story and the actual story link is attached to that but I just couldn’t not add the graphic link): A beautiful fairytale in which Killian finds himself in a place that’s existence allows for Neverland and its inhabitants’ immortality. There he meets a princess looking for help. 36k Rated M. Another notable mention Amaranthine: The most beautiful soulmates AU you shall ever read. 41k Rated M.

As You Wish by @gentlesleaze : A PRINCESS BRIDE AU, NEED I SAY MORE? Just as lovely as the film w Bonus drama. 38k Rated T. (The only fic not rated M/E on this list; idk what that says about my tastes…)

I just want to thank every person on the list for bringing such beautiful content to such a beautiful fandom. Shipping Captain Swan would not be the same w out you guys. ♥

I was going to try to do a Star Wars novels post this week, get back in the swing of things, but I can never stay away from STAR WARS fic for too long, there’s just too much that’s incredibly good! There’s so much that’s either just spot on to the characters or just hits the id or does something so clever that I’m enthralled (or does all three!) that is amazing and everyone should come scream about them with me!

Especially not at a time like this, when a spectacular number of things seemed to be going wrong at once. Honestly, what was the world coming to?

“Per?”

She looks up, surprised to see Lafontaine standing in the doorway.  They’re dressed in plaid pajamas, hair damp from a recent shower. Here, alone in the kitchen and the silence, she can sometimes make herself forget all the things that have happened. The dean, the fish, vampires, her f-

Anyway, that’s enough of that.

“Yes, dear?”

“Jeep and I were going to binge the new season of So You Think You Can Dance, do you want to watch with us?” Lafontaine asks. Ever since the awkward hug the day before, they’d been more at ease asking her to join in. She supposes that refusing a hundred times in a row will do that to a person, especially her person. There’d just been so much going on and now…

Well, now she doesn’t have a reason not to tell them.

Every so often, I think of this book and smile. It’s not that it’s a perfect book by any means. It has it’s pitfalls. But for what it is, Long May She Reign is a delightful, charming read. The biggest thing that charmed me was the protagonist. Fraya is refreshingly different from the YA fantasy heroine trope. She’s not kickass. She’s not girly. But she’s also not a damsel in distress. Instead, she’s smart and resourceful and fit to take important matters to task. And she’s not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what is right.

I should, perhaps, preface this with the plot. Right from the first chapter, Thomas places her readers in this lavish, beautiful royal feast. Everyone’s gorgeously dressed in elaborate court outfits, acrobats and contortionists are performing between tables, and doves fly out of a pie. It’s big and bold and she’s making a flashy statement from the get go. What I love about this set up is that it perfectly reflects the greedy conspicuous consumption of this corrupt king and really creates the tone for the remainder of the novel.

Just when you think we’re getting this beautiful, over the top royal aesthetic for the rest of the narrative, the entire court dies of poisoning. And in one fell swoop, Fraya becomes next in line for the throne. What remains is a twisty, turny murder mystery on a large scale, paired with some admirable character development on Fraya’s part. There’s a certain quiet dose of classic Sherlock Holmes in this. Unlike many fantasy novels these days, Long May She Reign is far from action packed. Instead, Thomas brings the excitement back to a more cerebral level as we watch Fraya use her science smarts and cunning to unravel the whodunnit.  Effectively, she’s Watson and Holmes all rolled into one and I love that in a female protagonist.

Although this novel is essentially set in a medieval fantasy plot, there’s something about it that feels very Victorian. Fraya’s scientific reasoning harkens back to the early days of forensic science, when doctors were still trying to discover how to detect arsenic in everyday matter. Rarely ever do I see female characters engaging in science in young adult novels and it brings me so much joy to see Fraya really excelling at it and revelling in her work. She’s not ashamed of being a scientist, nor does she bow to anyone’s will if ever they tell her it’s not her place to do such investigations. Her scientific curiosity makes her a very different kind of fantasy queen, and a much needed one at that.

Fraya is not a girl who ever expected to become queen. About a dozen down the line to inherit the throne, she was not meant to become queen. Yet it happens, and at first, she’s reluctant. She has grand plans to make the next great scientific discovery and invent something useful enough so she can gain notoriety and get out of her greedy town. She’s got aspirations beyond the kingdom. She wants to make something of herself.

And at first, becoming queen isn’t going to grant her that.

Of course, in time, she comes to realise how corrupt the court truly is and she starts to realise that she has a voice, and she’s in control. She calls the shots and no one else. People will try to pull her strings and manipulate her into doing what they want, but she wants none of it. The minute she has that epiphany, it’s her way or the highway. No more lavish spending, the poor are going to get their due, she really pulls it together despite the odds.

This is exactly what I need out of female characters! I need girls who get shit done! Because that’s exactly the type of role model young girls need right now more than ever! We need to be teaching them that they can do science. They can be effective leaders.

They have a voice!

I am beyond thrilled to see Rhiannon Thomas sharing such a message, and I’m excited to see what she does in the future because true, self-aware, feminist YA authors are few and far between. And they deserve all the attention we can give them.

SCREENPLAY REVIEW - “LIFE ITSELF”

Since the released logline for this film is so vague, and the photos from the film shoot last month were so crazy, I decided to dig around to see if I could find out some more about this film’s plot. (I mean - amongst other things - why is Oscar so clean-shaven and also looking like a bearded mountain man in the same film?) I found an interesting review of the screenplay, so if you don’t want to know anything further about this film before it is released, stop reading now. (SPOILERS BELOW)

hey lis! i noticed that you've reblogged a lot of book-related things recently so i was wondering if you have any book rec for over the holidays? (i really want to distract myself from Life and The Heat and am willing to scavenge in many charity shops to do so) <3

listing off all my favourite books would result in a very long and very rambly post, so i’m gonna limit myself to things i’ve read in the past few months. i don’t know what your taste in literature is like, but i hope some of these appeal to you!

  • six of crows. i read this a couple of weeks ago and loved it. it’s basically a heist novel set in a fantasy version of amsterdam, starring a motley group of criminals, convicts, and runaways. plus it’s racially and sexually diverse, which never hurts.
  • fingersmith. “the handmaiden" came out pretty recently, and because i haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, i decided to re-read the source material instead. sarah waters specialises in queer historical fiction, and this is honestly one of her best - the plot is as twisty and turny as any good dickens novel, the writing is fantastic, and the lesbians are…lesbians. what more could anyone want?
  • insomnia. this one is light on the horror and heavy on the bizarro fantasy, and even if you don’t like stephen king, it’s pretty much impossible to put down. if that’s not up your alley, try rose madder instead - it’s got a great female protag and has a lot of nerd bonuses if you’re a fan of greco-roman mythology. speaking of which:
  • neil gaiman’s norse mythology. i had my reservations to start off with, but this is actually a pretty faithful and well-written adaptation of the norse myths, with a touch of humour that’s lacking in a lot of modern translations. plus, he writes a brilliant loki.
  • sleep, pale sister. by the same author as chocolat, although tone-wise they couldn’t be more different. it’s a gothic novel told from three different perspectives, and gets steadily more and more surreal/unsettling as the heroine starts to lose her marbles. a bit darker than i usually like, but the plot makes up for it imo
  • hag-seed. margaret atwood’s modern-day adaptation of the tempest, set in a male prison and narrated by an ex-theatre director/part-time hermit. honestly, just read it. it’s great.
  • the girl who circumnavigated fairyland in a ship of her own making. i read this about a month ago and i can’t remember enjoying anything so much for ages. it’s mad as a box of frogs, and features a heroine who’s both likeable and believably flawed. there are (i think) three sequels, although i haven’t got round to reading them yet.
  • chop chop. a weird little book about an underpaid sous chef who accidentally enters into a contract with a mysterious epicure known as “the fat man”, while simultaneously working to bring down his abusive manager. it’s pretty disgusting in places, but very readable.
  • the silmarillion. i’ll be honest: if you’re not a tolkien fan, you’ll find this one hard to get into. however, it’s got some fantastic stories in it, and it’s great for anyone who wants a more in-depth knowledge of tolkien’s worldbuilding and characters.
  • endgame. this one’s technically a play, not a book, and only has four speaking parts: hamm, clov, and hamm’s parents, who have no legs and live in dustbins. also, nothing whatsoever happens in it. i’m not really selling this one, am i? try it. you’ll see what i mean.

Once Upon a Time is expected to return to ABC this fall.

I’m trying to not get my hopes up but the lack of info about Petra’s “twisty” love life makes me wonder if it’s something big. Jennie was purposely cryptic about that and there has to be a reason.

“Twisty, turny” is an interesting way to refer to it. And there’s no mention of men. I know that’s a stretch because apart from my personal headcanon, there’s no evidence they’ll go that way (even though it makes sense)

But anyway I’m not saying lesbian Petra is rising but I am

Went to The Sassy Sister’s Twisty Turny Trails event tonight. Was tons of fun as it was last time they did it. I only remembered to take a screenshot after we’d got out. The event is a maze in the basement of the mansion, made to be navigated while camera is in first person mode. It’s always a laugh! But thanks guys for running it!

Today, I fucked up... by not learning from my daughters mistakes

This happened to me last week, I was at work bored out of my mind. Playing with a pencil when all of a sudden I got the bright idea to put it in my ear. After a short few seconds of in-ear pencil stimulation I came to the realisation that something was wrong. I wasn’t getting the same feeling from my twisty turny motion as I was at the beginning. After a brief second of doubt, fear and confusion I yanked it out. SHIT. SHIT SHIT SHIT FUCK. The rubber on the pencil had vanished. Okay calm down. I’m and adult I can resolve this. Or not. There was no way my stubby finger was gonna be of any use. I looked around after trying the sideways head jump to find some double-sided tape. I’m starting to panic. I stuck some tape on a thin screw driver and into my ear it went. Instant regret. What. The. Fuck was I thinking I mean really A SCREWDRIVER?! I knew I had to go to the hospital. I mustered up the strength to go to my boss. “I have to go the hospital there’s a rubber stuck in my ear.” I didn’t even make eye contact with he before hearing her burst into laughter. I left. Waited two hours at the hospital because this was definitely not urgent. I mean a rubber lodged in your ear? Standard. Came back to work the same day. Everyone knows. As if being the IT guy isn’t bad enough, now I’m the IT guy who got a rubber stuck in my ear. Great.

TL;DR I lost a pencil eraser in my ear.

I am so confused. So, are we supposed to be into Jane/Rafael because it doesn’t feel that way. The minute they have a problem they’re fighting. Plus it’s framed as them not working so Jane is going back to Adam. I’m not into either pairing but it seems mean for people who ship Jane/Rafael. I agree they don’t work, but why build it up like that (probably because they’ll be endgame somehow)

And Petra, you moron. Don’t get pulled back in by Rafael yet again. Where’s this twisty, turny love life she’s supposed to have?

Week 30!

There are so many great fics out there that need to be recognized! If you find something you like on this list, be sure to show it the appreciation it deserves with likes, reblogs, and messages to the author! I hope you can find something to enjoy, and remember that if you’d like me to see your work, be sure to tag me in it!

Just a reminder that no all/mostly smut fics will be added. If they’re part of a series I will link non-smut parts.

Thank you for all your support for both me and the authors so far! You guys are awesome and I love reading your work. This one’s a really long one, and hopefully there’s something for everyone. There’s drabbles, series, AUs, non-reader works, and both fluff and angst. It’s all beneath the cut. Enjoy!
