Hi Essi! Would you mind suggesting some language exchange topics? How can I have great and productive sessions with a partner?

Hi! Language exchange is a great way to improve your language skills! You may feel nervous at first but your partner probably feels just the same, but don’t worry, you both will start feeling more comfortable and confident after a while. Have an open mind and remember to help and encourage your partner when they struggle or hesitate, they will do the same for you. Before you start the exchange you can plan ahead when you’re having your sessions and what topics you’re going to discuss, so you can prepare beforehand by looking up more information or useful words and phrases. It would also be a good idea to discuss what you want from the exchange and what aspects of your language skills you want to improve so you can better help and support each other to reach those goals.

Here are some topic ideas:

  • Interests and hobbies
What are your hobbies? What are you interested in? What are you good at? What is your favourite…?
  • Languages
What languages do you speak? What languages do you want to learn? What languages are spoken in your country?
  • Home, family, and pets
What kind of home did you grow up in? Where do you live now? Who belong to your family? Do you have any pets?
  • School and studying
What do you study? What is your favourite and least favourite subject? What is the education system like in your country?
  • Work
Where do you work? What kind of jobs have you had before? What is your dream job?
  • Travel
What countries have you traveled to? Where would you like to travel? Have you ever lived in another country?
  • Books
Do you like to read? What kind of books do you like to read? What’s your favourite book/author?
  • Movies
Do you like to watch movies? What kind of movies do you like to watch? What’s your favourite movie?
  • TV
How much time do you spend watching TV? What are your favourite TV-shows? What TV-shows are popular in your country?
  • Music
What kind of music do you like? Do you play any instruments? Are you good at singing?
  • Your country
What is your country like? What is your favourite and least favourite thing about your country? What would you recommend tourists to see and try in your country?
  • Food
What are some typical dishes from your country? What is your favourite food? Is there some food you can’t stand or are allergic to?
  • Climate
What is the climate like in your country? How many seasons are there in your country? Do you believe in climate change?
  • Sports
Do you do any sports? Do you watch sports? What sports are popular in your country?
  • Money
What do you like to spend money on? Are you saving money for anything? Do you think money brings happiness?

I hope this helps! If you run out of topics to discuss just google “language exchange topics” and “conversation topics” and you’ll find more. Good luck!
