tv-show:-ER

Where is the ER fandom at?

Seriously? I mean this. I literally grew up watching ER and I have a special place deeply entrenched in my heart for each and every single member of the stunning cast of ER, each beautifully written character and heartwrenching sadness and uplifting joy.

You want a show that handles topics like HIV/AIDS, Homosexuality, Transgenderism, Cancer and other serious illnesses both physical and mental in a mature, realistic manner, without reducing the diverse world to simple arrogantly designed stereotypes?

How about a show that says everything that is wrong with North American medical facilities and national medical budgeting in a simple, effective manner?

A show that takes these well-written, strong characters, these very real people and puts them into everyday and not-so-everyday Emergency Medical situations?

Where a large part of the events that happen in the show are based on events that have happened to real hospitals in the US?

E-muthafuckin-R, my darlings.

Plus, hey guess what? The cast is stellar and when I say stellar is mean literally star-studded. Check this out:

He also had a fever which I said was suspicious. I even did a stomach press check and I knew. Still, I got out my medical textbook they gave me on ER (1994) and said, ‘Let’s go to the real doc.’ He said, 'It’s just the flu.’ Of course, they admitted him and took out his appendix. Now he’s like, 'Get over yourself. You’re still not a real doctor.’

I’m assuming you meant the new(er!) TV show written by Bryan Fuller– I have all intentions of watching it considering I loved Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me but have yet to get into it! Silence Of The Lambs, however, is one of my very favorite books/movies so I just couldn’t help it.

Near as the darling Clarice Starling and Mello as Jame Gumb because I’m an actual shitlord.

My Worst Audition: Julianna Margulies

Julianna Margulies’ audition for ER could have gone a liiiiittle smoother.

Voices of Dragon Age: Inquistion #9 - Female Inquisitor #2

Sumalee Montano (Female Inquisitor #2) is an American actress and voice actress of Filipina, Thai and Chinese ancestry. Before she became an actress, she was an analyst at investment bank in New York and Hong Kong. However, she decided to leave Wall Street and travel through the Middle East, Africa and Asia. It was during this travel she decided to take up acting. She guest starred in tv-shows like ER, The West Wing, Bones, Close to Home and in the soap opera The Young and the Restless. Sumalee lent her voice to Arcee in Transformers Prime cartoon and to Katana in Beware the Batman. She also voiced numerous video game characters in games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Hard Evidence, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Dead Island, Diablo III, Guild Wars 2, Skylanders: Giants, Elder Scrolls Online. Her two the most memorable roles are surely the Nyareen Kandros in Mass Effect 3: Omega DLC and the President of the United States (female voice #3) in Saints Row IV. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, she lent her voice to Female Inquisitor (American accent).

Trivia: Sumalee graduated from Harvard.

Trivia II: Sumalee has two pets - “a big dog and a tiny cat”.

When people hear that I’m an emergency physician, they often ask, “What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen?”

TV shows frequently show ER doctors and nurses heroically saving people on the verge of death. Then there are news reports about people abusing the health care system by seeking emergency care for minor problems that could be better handled in a doctor’s office.

I see those things. But the extremes don’t paint a full picture of the urban ER that is the center of my working life. So allow me to introduce you to some of the people I saw in the ER on a recent day.

A middle-aged woman complains about stomach pain. She tells me that she has had pain for years. We talk about why she’s there that day, and she starts crying. She lost her job, and she’s estranged from her teenage son. Her sister died the month before. I ask her about weapons at home. She tells me she’s thinking about killing herself with her husband’s gun.

An 18-year-old woman brings in her 10-year-old brother, who is coughing and wheezing. While she goes out for a cigarette, he tells me that everyone at home — three cousins, an aunt, his mom and the sister — all smoke. They live on a busy road, next to an interstate. He opens his backpack to show me empty pill bottles and expired asthma inhalers. I also see his lunch: half a package of Twizzlers, two bags of chips and a large soda.

Paramedics wheel in a 67-year-old man covered in sweat. His blood pressure and pulse rate are sky-high. His wife, the doctors and the nurses are all worried about a heart attack. But an electrocardiogram, chest X-ray and lab tests turn out to be normal. I ask him about drug and alcohol use. He tells me he’s a daily drinker and uses narcotic painkillers to help him relax. He’d been trying to quit. He’s not having a heart attack. He’s in withdrawal.

Two trauma patients arrive next. First, there’s an 80-year-old woman whose neighbors called the police after she hadn’t been seen for days. They found her on the floor of her bathroom mumbling and lying in her own feces. She’s emaciated, covered in bedsores, has four fractured ribs and a broken hip. I ask the paramedics about her family. They are nowhere to be found.

Then, there is a 19-year-old man who has been shot in the chest and abdomen. We stabilize him and get him to the operating room where the surgeons are able to stop his hemorrhage and repair his wounds. This is his third ER visit this year. The first time, he had been stabbed in the arm and received stitches. The second time, he had punched a wall and broke his right hand. There’s nothing in his record about his home environment. I wonder what his life is like and whether we’ll see him again with another injury.

I see two young women, both in their 30s, like me. One is unconscious, and we rush her to the CT scanner, where she’s found to have bleeding in her brain. Her mother says that she’s had a bad headache for a week, but didn’t want to come in earlier because she was afraid of losing her two part-time jobs. The other woman sprained her ankle. She looks fine. But she shakes her head when I ask if she has been taking the HIV medicine that the medical records tell me she has been prescribed. Her boyfriend took all her money, she tells me. She’s hungry and says she would be grateful if we could get her a sandwich.

051 The Vicar of Dibley: Songs of Praise (1994)

Geraldine?  Is not wrong.

Peter’s main task as Tristan Campbell the BBC producer/director for Songs of Praise is to show up and be handsome (and tall) and have fabulous bouncy curls and smile a lot and does he need to do anything else?

He doesn’t really have a character or a story beyond a vague misunderstanding about his availability*, but the episode makes me laugh because I have no shame, and it has Simon McBurney, who is secretly my favorite in Rev, so I’m happy enough.

It’s also just the tiniest little bit meta in that since a BBC film crew is supposedly filming a tv show in the context of the episode (when of course they ARE filming the, er, tv show) they don’t have to hide the lights and cameras and monitors and so on.  And since Tristan is the director in the episode, he wears headphones and he’s miked up, and cueing the action, and I like to think it’s about as close to seeing Peter the actual real-life director as we’re going to get (besides the tiny bit of horribly watermarked behind-the-scenes stuff from Strictly Sinatra).

*Tristan is definitely not married because that’s the plot of his return appearance when he has a different girlfriend, a different hairstyle, and differently spelled first name, but he is wearing a gold ring on his right hand.  I’m going to take a wild guess that it’s Peter wedding ring moved to the opposite hand, as a way for him to wear it without the inherent left hand symbolism.

Hey everybody! How does this prompt structure sound for AU Week?

1. Movies (Pacific Rim, Harry Potter, Prince of Egypt, other Disney movies, Captain America etc;) 2. Books (well, Harry Potter,  3. TV shows (Doctor Who, ER, Firefly, West Wing, etc;) 4. Genre (Western, Noir, fantasy, etc;) 5. Games (Mass Effect, Persona, etc;) 6. UA (canon divergences, what-ifs) 7. Original Ideas/Other (historical placements, mermaid, etc;)

That way its basically an all-encompassing smorgasbord of awesome!
Make It Stop [2/3]

[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]

The drive over to his house had been relatively uneventful after the baby had stopped crying, the plastic doll apparently offering some kind of beautiful reprieve from its banshee squalling. Arthur would have considered himself lucky had he not been stuck driving and thus completely unable to enjoy the silence by throwing himself onto the nearest plush surface and bidding the world farewell for a few much needed hours of shut eye.

He parked in his driveway haphazardly, not bothering to correct his alignment before carefully shutting the door and locking it after Alfred had exited and collected his things. The jock was busy apparently admiring his home because he meandered along behind at a snail’s pace, looking around, the baby crooked in his arms.

Arthur really didn’t care.

He didn’t care for introductions, he didn’t care for showing him his home, he just entered through the front door, made a left down the hall, and went into his room.

Alfred quietly followed after, whistling at the sight of his neat and organized abode. “Ha, this seems just like you.” The jock commented

Arthur didn’t say anything to that, instead laying down on his bed, ignoring his guest and closing his eyes. It felt good. It felt better than good. Everything was silent and he could almost reach out and touch the tangible threads of sleep that were beckoning him away from this personal bubble of hell.
