Followup 1 to How Your Costume Shop Works:

@addicted-to-nostalgia asks “What about specialized things like beading and embroidery on costumes? Are there people who do specifically that?”

Again, the short answer is: sometimes?

I know when you’re talking about things like Game of Thrones and probably other Really Embroidery Heavy movies/tv shows (and I haven’t worked formally on movies/tv yet, just made the occasional thing on contract but I would bet that their costume shop process is pretty much the same as the one I outlined for theater) they have an Official Embroidery Crew, so in that case yes, stuff does go to a completely different group of folks who specialize in just that.

HOWEVER, honestly, embroidery and beading often take a LOT of time, so it’s rare for a theater costume shop to decide to do a lot of them, because it’s the teams themselves that’ll do it, not a specialized person. More often than not, if you’re beading something it’s just little bits, like adding beaded fringe to a 20′s dress, or adding individual bead/sequins/heat set rhinestones to something for light bounce. This is where prebeaded fabrics (as much as they’re a pain in the ass to work with) make all the difference-the time it takes to crack the beads off and secure the ends through the seams is still less than beading the whole thing from scratch. Not that it *couldn’t* happen from scratch, just that it’s a big time and man hour investment.

As far as embroidery, it’s much the same-it’s another big man-hour investment, and at least with that there are generally other ways for theater to fake that embroidered look, because our audience is usually at least 20 feet away. Trim is used a lot for stuff to look semi-embroidered, I’ve definitely machine-free-arm “embroidered” things before, and honestly, even puff paint or Sharpie judicially used in a big enough house will read as embroidery. In the case of a small theater, yeah, sometimes you have to do it, and that again, usually falls to the person on the team with the most previous knowledge of it. My experience with adding embroidery has been mostly “this needs to look rustic or ethnic” or “we can’t see this so we need to outline it in something.” In the theater, if you’re trying to do a Big Embroidered Game of Thrones Dress, you’ll usually find a pre-embroidered fabric, cut the motifs you want out, and re-build it as a big applique onto the dress itself, like so:

(this is beaded flower fabric with a red mesh that’s been pinned to a Big Fuckoff Red Satin Skirt by our designer and now we have a student stitcher whipstitich that all on-much faster than doing it all by hand)

The order in which you add the embroidery/beading is also dependent on what it is/where it goes too. On Big Red Skirt there, we knew that the beading was going to have to overlap seams, so we put it on last. HOWEVER, it’s a lot easier to do beading/embroidery flat, so frequently we’ll try to do as much applique or embellishment work like this as we can before putting the garment actually together. (this of course also depends on what you’re adding, because a flat faux-embroidery applique is a lot easier to feed through the machine than big beaded flowers like the ones up there.

Make Magnus happy, please!

I’m so sorry not really but I had to make a post about this.

There is spoilers ahead, obviously. And also there is mentions of suicide, attempt in murder and psycological torment in Magnus’ past. Just making this warning to people who are uncomfortable.

Let me give you some insight about Magnus and his past life because I believe he has suffered so much.

I also want people who watch the show but haven’t read the books to be aware of Magnus’ back story so the whole fandom can understand why most of us are reacting the way we are.

But if you have watched the tv show but haven’t read the books, this is only spoilers for Magnus’ story, not anyone elses. You don’t have to read this if you don’t want to!

Ok, on with the post.

*       *        *

FIRST OF ALL, I am not saying that we should toss aside Clary, Alec, Simon and Jace for what they are feeling. What they are feeling is horrible and I hate it but it let me tell you all something, this situation with Magnus is NOT something to be excused.

First, let’s give the run down of Magnus’ life.

Magnus Bane grew up in Indonesia with his mundane half Indonesian-half Dutch mother with his mundane step-father (his mother’s husband but obviously not his biological dad). When he was under 10 years of age, his mother realised that his cat eyes meant that he was half demon. Because it was the 16th century, Magnus’ parents were highly religious. So she hung herself in the family barn because she couldn’t bare to think that she gave birth to a half demon. They both feared him. They feared a harmless, careful and sweet child.

It’s one thing for Clary to see her mother dead (that was really horrible and I feel so bad for her) but for Magnus’ mother to kill herself because of him? That is NOT something a child under 10 years old can handle. That traumatised him and still does centuries later. Once a child, who is very young in the developing years, experienced something horrible, it’s hard to get over. It is even possible for teens to have nightmares about being alone because sometime in the toddler years, that child might have gotten lost in a store. For a child, losing your parent in a store is horrible and heartbreaking. Imagine seeing your mother dead, permanently gone, because she feared you. Think about that for a second.

As for his step-father? When he was 10 years old, his step-father tried to drown him in the lake on the side of their barn. Magnus, who had no idea he had powers in the first place, thought he was doing to die. (Sounds familiar? May I remind you of “Valentine’s execution”?) But due to Magnus’ fear when he thought he was going to die at the hands of his father, Magnus accidentally set him on fire. He watched someone burn and die right in front of him. Another person that died because of him. All of this at the age of 10 years old. Silent Brothers in Spain, Madrid raised him in the 17th century until he was old enough to use his powers properly!

When it comes to abandoning family, Magnus is always the one that gets abondoned every single time! He is immortal! To quote Alec, “you watch the people you care about age and die”. If that’s not enough, how about the people who used him only for his powers? Did it ever occur to people that Alec is literally the first shadowhunter who treated him like his powers didn’t matter? He has felt this way for 400 years. Even downworlders have their conflicts with each other! Vampires, werewolves, faeries and warlocks had their share of violence towards each other in the past and present.

BUT DESPITE ALL OF THIS, he took downworlders under his wing for centuries so no one feels the way he did when he was 10. Alone. Scared. Frightened. He had to learn how to get people to pay him for his magic so he could make a decent living. His amazing loft didn’t come from nothing!

Clary’s father is horrible but Magnus’ dad is literally a Prince of Hell! Asmodeus is one of the seven greater demons whose seven deadly sin is lust (which is horrible if you think about how his poor mother was tricked into sleeping with him). In the books, Asmodeus was willing to take away Magnus’ immortality, kill him and turn him into an actual prince of hell, just like him.

We also know, from the show, that Magnus would have killed himself if it wasn’t for Camille who literally did one thing right by stopping him.

And we all saw it today in episode 2x12 where Magnus Bane was tortured, mentally abused, psycologically abused and physically abused for a crime he didn’t commit. His body was violated and he was terrified from the influence Valentine (in his body) would have on other people in his place. He has been called a liar when he always told the truth, he witnessed the dark side of the love of his life who he thought he could trust his heart with. Granted, Alec did make a mistake and the thing that we are all proud of and thankful of is that Alec is trying to apologise and fix his mistakes unlike everyone else that did Magnus wrong.

And now, he is reliving the painful memories he tried so desperately to forget for centuries. Why wouldn’t Magnus feel like he did at the end of the episode? I don’t blame him one bit. I am also thankful that Alec gave him space after everything that happened.

And what really makes this character worth fighting for? Is that he NEVER turned evil. Not once did his heart turned black. Not once did he disobey the shadowhunters who have treated him horribly. Not once did he give up on the greater good of the world.

THAT’S why I’m fighting for Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Him being a part of the LGBTQA+ community is only part of it. I just hope the writers are nice to Magnus in future episodes.

And as for Alec reacting “weird” this episode. He did the right thing by giving him space and time to heal. He showed that he is regretful. He has done all he can at this point in time.

Don’t worry, I believe malec will grow stronger in the end.

I would like to say a very happy birthday to my best friend, my partner in crime, The Chandler to my Joey. We’ve only known each other now for a little over a year, but everyday I’m more and more thankful that you’re my best friend. You’re so incredibly beautiful, kind, gentle, loving, funny, silly. There are so many words to describe your personality and what sort of person you are, but if I go on I’m afraid I’ll gush too much haha.

It’s been so amazing getting to know you and I honestly feel so honored that you call me your best friend. I know you’re always going to be there for me whether it’s you sending me memes at the wee hours of the morning when you can’t sleep, or if it’s us just talking. (Usually about characters. We all know my favorite thing to do is convince you to like someone from a TV show/movie you haven’t even seen yet!)

I love our random moments when we headcanon some really good pieces of writing, or when you finally admit to loving a character without actually knowing that much about them because you read my writing. I love the silly conversations over snapchat about David Rossi(our sugar daddy), and your love of all the filters. I absolutely adore when you send me a message fangirling about something. It warms my heart to see you getting so passionate about something. I find it funny that we both share hatred for the same people and we actually bonded over that. I love talking to you because you surprise me everyday with something that I didn’t know before.

You’re so supportive and loving towards me, and for that, I’m forever thankful. I know you’ll always be there for me when things get tough, when I distance myself, and when I need a laugh.

I love when you call me beautiful, and cute and all these wonderful things because most of the time you don’t even know that what you’re calling me is what you truly are. You’re beautiful, you’re cute, and you’re outstandingly amazing, Dana.

You deserve so much in this world, and I am forever grateful that I get to be beside you, seeing you grow as a person and bud into an adult(which, let’s face it, is the same as being a teenage, just with more responsibility.) Just remember, I will always be here for you too. I am a shoulder to cry on, someone to trust and someone who cares about you a whole lot. I will always be here for you, no matter what happens. Sorry, I’m here to stay haha.

Happy birthday, girl. I hope today is all that you want it to be. I love you. ❤️🌹🎉

If you guys don’t know what Zoophobia is, here is the overall plot of it.

This is coming from,

“Zoophobia is a fantasy/humour webcomic by Vivienne Medrano about a neurotic young woman named Cameron who, when desperate for a job, winds up being unexpectedly thrust into Safe Haven, a fantastic world full of incredible beasts, unimaginable beings and zany characters. She receives a job as a guidance counselor at the Zoo-Phoenix Academy, where she faces head-on with a colorful cast of talking animals and strange creatures. Unfortunately, Cameron has quite the terrible case of zoophobia and is ultimately terrified by the very students and staff she must work with.”

Sounds very interesting, it is.

But, yours truly, is gonna give you guys a pitch.

You can also look up this comic online for more information about it.

And you can go to and search that up for more details on the plot and characters,

But first, since this is gonna be put to television, I thought of a good cable network that could distribute the show.

And that distributor is… Comedy Central.

I think this is a good distributor, because this is coming from the network that brought us South Park!

And if you guys think about it, Zoophobia and South Park have big similarities.

1. The two shows take place at a huge school where all of the characters. South Park Elementary and Zoo-Phoenix Academy (Academy ranges from 18 year old’s to mid 20′s. So it’s like high school and college rolled into one school.)

2. Characters often swear in the two shows.

3. The most over the top shit happens in the two shows!

4. Follows the daily lives of the main characters throughout the shows.

5. The two are very funny and humorous.

And maybe Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, can write the episodes. Because they know how to balance both comedy and emotional moments, very well.

And this would be a rebootquel (reboot and sequel)

Reboot because when get introduced to this immersive world and get to know the characters.

But a sequel because we have a few new characters to know and this would be taking place in current times.

After the last issue of the web comic.

And I would like for each season to have 15 episodes, to balance everything going on,

So here’s my pitch,

So we are introduced to a new character named Connor.

He’s in his early 20′s, just finished up community college, and is in need for a transfer to a bigger school.

But Conner is different from Cameron.

While Cameron has a fear with animals, gets a little crazy sometimes, and also nervous.

Conner is like that, wanting to help others also. But he loves animals, he does philanthropy work for lots of charities, very confident, and never backs down from a fight. And he loves to help people, so when he gets the same job that Cameron has, which is a guidance counselor, he is very happy with that.

So his introduction is like Cameron’s, going on a plane to the school, and freaks out dead on arrival.

Also, gets to hang out with the animals and creatures.

But the theme is about FINDING OUT WHO YOU ARE.

At a young age, he lost his parents in a tragic car accident, so he is lonesome.

He starts connecting with everyone and knows that everyone he meets, are similar to him in a way.

Never judge a book by its cover.

So for one specified story line with Conner making friends, a new character is introduced.

It’s a female student, and her name is… Jay Burndell.

But she likes to be called JayJay.

She’s the new girl in school.

She is also finished with community college and transferred to this academy.

Coincidences everywhere!!!

She loves fashion, very energetic, loves to go to parties and night clubs.

She is also very smart, her GPA is very good, and is so nice to everyone.

So of course, it seems that someone has caught Conner’s attention.

Yes, I want the two to have romance.

I am a hopeless romantic.

I don’t want to rush it, so I would rather build the two up as very close friends.

And as the first few episodes continue, we get to see Conner getting to know Cameron, her friends, and Jay.

It’s all about life, relationships, choices, etc.

And I like that theme, it’s like a little bit of everything.

But within the tenth episode, Conner discovers something shocking.

But, lets set this discovery up.

Safe Haven is a world unlike Earth.

It’s a world inhabited by animals and creatures, that speaks English.

There’s this event that happens during the first half of the school year.

And this is my take on the whole story.

Since everyone except for Conner and Cameron are animals, there are some who are shapeshifters. Shapeshifters are when humans transform into a specific type of animal or creature. So for the first half, the shapeshifters have to transform to there animal form for the whole first semester. THEY CANNOT CHANGE TO THEIR HUMAN FORM. AND FOR ANIMALS THAT ONLY TRANSFORM DURING A SPECIFIC TIME OF DAY, LIKE A WEREWOLF, HAVE TO STAY IN THEIR ANIMAL FORM. REASON BEING IS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE IN THEIR ANIMAL FORM. THE THEME OF SELF IMPORTANCE AND DISCOVERY.

So then finds out during that episode that Jay is… A werewolf.

Once Conner finds out, Jay is scared for him or anyone to see her like this.

She doesn’t like the way she looks, saying she looks like a monster, and inside a beast’s body.

And it’s at this point in the show when the theme really starts kicking in.

Conner is then confessing that he thinks that she looks beautiful no matter what, and that you should always love yourself whether you’re a human or an animal.

It’s on the inside what counts.

The self importance and loving who you are theme of the show.

And they became best friends for the rest of the season, leading up to romance in the second season.

They always defend each other whenever anyone starts to pick on one of them.

And it’s really cool as a theme, where everyone has each other’s backs, and helping one another.

While also having a theme of discovery and loving yourself.

And that my friends, is my season one pitch!

Maybe season 2 can have a huge battle with the students and other monsters, since some animals at the academy have a unique set of skills.

That’s it!

Like and reblog with your thoughts.

Thank you guys so much.

That is my take.

The Isle of Man

This is a self-governing island that is classed as a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom, an lies about 200 miles off the west coast of Great Britain. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the title of Lord of Mann, an is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. Foreign relations and defence are the responsibility of the British Government, as are law, taxation and regulations.

The island has been inhabited since before 6500 BC. In 627, King Edwin of Northumbria conquered the Isle of Man along with most of Mercia. Oddly, though this land is near to northern England the accent of the island natives is more similar to southern England. The UK government use this island as tax haven.

After a period of alternating rule by the kings of Scotland and England, the island came under the feudal lordship of the English Crown in 1399. The lordship revested into the British Crown in 1765, but the island never became part of the Kingdom of Great Britain or its successor the United Kingdom, retaining its status as an internally self-governing Crown dependency.
