Finally got around to Homeland, reviewing it now that I’ve finished season 1 rather than waiting until the end of season 2 but I’ll be caught up by the next episode on Sunday. I intended to watch it around the hype but I’ve never been too interested in getting into shows that I don’t know if they pay off in the end, or waiting week by week for a show I really like. Even so, I still procrastinated after everyone liked it despite spending my Summer watching a dozen TV shows. However, its Emmys success pushed my intrigue, especially Damian Lewis winning over Bryan Cranston, who I’ve always been a fan of since he used to be on a few British TV shows I watched that are small enough to not even have an IMDb page as well as his incredible performance in Keane. It turns out he earned it good.

It’s a very quietly intense show, often at a pace comparable to No Country For Old Men, focusing on a very keen sense of paranoia to the point where, after it builds itself up and develops the characters, the audience is on the same height of suspicion as the characters on themselves as well as each other. While there is a hell of a payoff in the end after the steady esculation, sometimes the show does feel like it’s being a slow burn for the sake of being a slow burn, with long sequences of content devoted to character development and small actions. It can be somewhat underwhelming at times, especially when it leads onto another piece of the puzzle that doesn’t seem to ring true.

Despite moments of humour, it is quite a cold and alienating show, but that’s the point and it adds to its immersive power. It’s certainly an intelligent and disturbing view of the most powerful nation’s security which is fascinating to watch as the characters tread moral boundaries. For the most part, Homeland is a satisfying investment, with twists and big bold moves that truly cut to the core. Naturally, the performances are excellent and Clare Danes and Damian Lewis absolutely deserve their awards with Mandy Patinkin often at the same calibre. It’s great to have a focused and sophisticated show with a small but dedicated network of characters.

It doesn’t reach too high in my top shows list for now, but that’s most likely due to the fact that there’s less of it. Perhaps it’ll grow on me, but I certainly like it a lot. On other TV notes, I really need to catch up on Sons of Anarchy and The Shield, because, a few episodes into their 3rd seasons, I kinda feel like the former is too high and the latter is too low. Gotta see more to judge, not gonna make any hasty adjustments (still feels like I’ve only scraped the surface of The Shield). I also saw, and bought the complete collection, season 1 of The West Wing and it has plenty of potential, especially after that cliffhanger.

Just finished Season 3 which was overall hit and miss. Some episodes were a waste of time and some episodes were total joyrides. It did a great job of expanding the universe of Lost though and Ben Linus is a fascinating character. Although I wasn’t a fan of  the beginning Jack/Sawyer/Kate saga, which was very disappointing as I wanted to find out right away what happened to them after I saw Season 2’s finale, I was very interested in the Other’s backstory and more on Dharma. Unfortunately Jack has become really less sympathetic, but Sawyer is much better, more human. Desmond is the total highlight of the season. Torn on Locke. The famous finale didn’t hit me as hard as it did for most, but the flashforwards is potentially a thing of genius. More hooked on the show than I was for the second season finale. Can’t wait to see how they payoff.
