Have I ever talked about how much I love the foreshadowing of events to come and the subtlety in Wreck-It Ralph like okay:

  • They mention Turbo way at the beginning but they have a Street Fighter character do it so it seems like a reference to Street Fighter II Turbo at first. They even show Turbotime during Ralph’s opening monologue, and Vanellope in her cart is visible on the side of the Sugar Rush console during that long panning time-lapse shot
  • The Turbo story is disguised as a worldbuilding cautionary tale by having Felix tell it to Calhoun
  • The Turbo graffiti in the background of the tunnels that shows Turbo’s still around 
  • The castle is pink because it’s Vanellope’s castle and not King Candy’s and the primary color in her princess outfit is pink
  • King Candy’s design is just slightly off for the Sugar Rush game, since he’s a little old man with a more western influenced design than the kid-aged and chibi-style Sugar Rushians
  • King Candy’s coding is huge and bulky compared to everything else, not only because he’s from an older clunkier game but because he had to code his King Candy identity by himself
  • Vanellope knows what the royal we is despite the fact that she’s a homeless street child
  • They distract the audience from the fact that Sugar Rush is a racing game by making it’s primary identity it’s Candyland-esque aesthetic and not the racing
  • King Candy knows who Ralph is when he shows up in the palace, even though Ralph has no idea who he is and doesn’t seem to have ever interacted with any Sugar Rushians before that point and King Candy probably never went to the terminal because Vanellope might have snuck into the race while he was away

So, as I promised, in this post I’m showing the arcade machines of the fictional games in the movie and the real machines they are based on:

1. Fix it Felix Jr. is based on Donkey Kong.

2. Hero’s Duty is based on Terminator Salvation (this is actually the only one I didn’t previously know of, but found out during the research).

3. Sugar Rush is based on the Mario Kart series. Notice that the Mario Kart machine doesn’t have any character on the side, which implies this detail was added to the Sugar Rush machine specifically so Ralph could find out Vanellope is part of the game. There’s also an earlier version which doesn’t include this detail.

4. Ok, but actually the machine we saw previously was a concept version. The final version in the movie allowed 2 gamers to play together, and this design is based on another Mario Kart machine, although the Sugar Rush machine itself, with its structure, graphics, etc. is still based on the previous 1-player machine, so it’s a hybrid of the two.

5. Now for TurboTime. According to the pictures I found in the research, its machine is actually not really similar to Rally-X, which it’s said to be based on, but at least the graphics is.

I always saw Gene as a person who would not like Turbo. Of course, it was a theory…. until “Wreck-it Ralph” has been released recently for the second time at the Theater “El Captain”. Before the start of the movie, Rich Moore itself and a puppet version of Gene took a couple questions from the audience, and what we learned is that Gene very much STILL doesn’t like Ralph, and he didn’t like Turbo because…. you’ll see why in that comic! And the worse, he done it many times! I couldn’t resist to draw that!

He had literally no flying clue where he was, but graphics this good were way too advanced to be part of a game - right?

The size of the place was what had shocked him the most, the map stretching far beyond what his eyes could ever possibly see. From where he was standing, he couldn’t see much other than a few distant skyscrapers and what appeared to be a few intersecting roads (the darkness wasn’t exactly helping him see anything else), and though he was slightly taken aback by it, he was quick to assume this was all part of his imagination. A dream, maybe. Perhaps he’d been knocked out at Tapper’s again – which didn’t seem unlikely. 

“Alright, yer done here, pal,” he muttered absentmindedly to himself, “Was real fun while it lasted, but ya can’t go noddin’ off outta nowhere.”

He then proceeded to sharply pinch his arm in an attempt to wake himself up, only to find his efforts useless. He stood there in silence for a moment before heaving a long and irritated sigh, shoving his hands into his pockets as he marched off in a random direction. Well, this was going to be fun.
