A pair of black-capped donacobius call to affirm their territory. Top bird nerd fact for the day- this type of singing is known as an antiphonal duet - a behaviour few birds are capable of where two individuals or groups sing alternately at speed with great precision! Unfortunately I wasn’t recording sound! Filmed in the southern Pantanal, Brazil, on assignment for @stevewinterphoto, @natgeo and @natgeowild. NaPoWriMo Day 22: A Hummingbird’s Home

She must know my mother waits for her
each morning—swaddled in plum robe,

perched on the edge of the couch, gazing out
the window into the front yard: a patchwork mess

of stubbled grass and withering stalks of lavender
belted by crumbling brick and concrete—she must know

because she, little hummingbird, blue-green mass and
miracle whirl of flight, dives deep into stone fountain

every morning, knowing that this is no rock of God—no water
has babbled from this floorless brook; no flower blooms

in this cracked earth; no sweet nectar dews in the sun
or drops here. And still—still!—when dawn colors

the morning sky in purple-gray, my mother’s hummingbird
flies low; dips into stone fountain; comes up with—a miracle—water.

The Odd Couple

There are more questions than answers in these photographs. Why are the Great Blue Heron and Woodchuck hanging out? Why is the heron “fishing” on dry ground? What happened between these two? They won’t even face each other. At least they parted peacefully.
