Sant Tulsi Sahab: Unravel the Fourteen Inner Levels Within You

English rendering of Hindi translation, by Maharshi Santsewi ji Paramhans, of a verse composed by Sant Tulsi Sahab of Hathras, founder of Modern Lineage of Santmat, excerpted from the October 2004 edition of the Hindi Monthly “Shanti Sandesh” (Message of Peace) published by Maharshi Mehi Ashram, Kuppa Ghat, Bhagalpur, Bihar, India – 812003. (The English translation is by Pravesh K. Singh.)

Once a Muslim gentleman, named Taki, called on Sant Tulsi Sahab. He submitted to his (Tulsi Sahab’s) kind attention, “You are the Guru to Hindus and Pir to Muslims. I have come to you to learn some divine secrets from you. It would be a great favor, if you could enlighten me.” Sant Tulsi Sahab said, “Ask! What’s it you wish to know?” Taki asked, “Where does Khuda [God] live? What is the way to find Him?” What Sant Tulsi Sahab said in reply in verse form is presented below:

Original Verse:

“Sun ay Taki na jaaio jinahaar dekhanaa | Apane mein aap jalawaye diladaar dekhanaa || Putalee mein til hai til mein bharaa raaj kul kaa kul | Is paradaye siyah ke jaraa paar dekhanaa || Chaudah tabak kaa haal ayaan ho tujhe zaroor | Gaafil na ho khayaal se hushiyaar dekhana || Sun laamakaan pay panhuch ke teree pukaar hai | Hai aa rahee sadaa se sadaa yaar dekhanaa || Milanaa to yaar kaa naheen mushkil magar Taki | Dushawaar to ye hai ki dushawaar dekhanaa || Tulsi binaa karam kisee murshad raseedaa ke | Raahe nizaat door hai us paar dekhanaa” ||

Translation:

O Taki! Listen! Never look or search outside to find God | He is within you; behold His Light which is illuminating your inside (the Inner Sky) ||

All the secrets of God–Realization are hidden inside the black ‘til’ (Point) that is located within your pupils |However, those secrets will be revealed to you only if you learnt to see beyond the dark curtain (that is, beyond the empire of darkness that is seen on closing our eyes) ||

Rigorous practice of inner meditation would unravel the fourteen levels (including the seven levels of 'pind’ or body and the seven levels of 'brahmaand’ or the macro-cosmos (namely, ajnaa chakra, sahasradal kamal, shoonya, maha-shoonya, bhanwar gufaa, and sat lok) | But for that to happen, you will have to alert focus your attention at the place prescribed by the Guru ||

On reaching into the 'shoonya’ or void, you would listen to the Sound or Word… | …The sound (primeval or Quintessential Sound) through which God has been calling you right since you separated from Him ||

It is not difficult to find the dearest (God), but O Taki…|
…it is difficult to look beyond that difficult curtain of darkness ||
Tulsi Sahab says, but for the merciful grace of an accomplished Guru… |
It is almost impossible to find the way out beyond the three coverings or veils of darkness, Light and Sound, and to meet the Supreme Lord! ||

“The ocean of existence is unfathomably vast and without any port of safety. It cannot be crossed – If you meet the Satguru, the boatman, then only will you get across and reach your Abode. Listen, O friend! Great is the status of Sants. In that region of Sants there is neither sound nor any form. It is beyond Sunn [the void] and Maha-sunn [the great void]. Says Tulsi, he knows the True Name of the Abode of the August, Nameless and Infinite Being.”

Within This Body

Within this body
breathes the secret essence.
Within this body
beats the heart of the Vedas.

Within this body
shines the entire Universe,
so the saints say.

Hermits, ascetics, celibates –
all are lost
seeking Him
in endless guises.

Seers and sages perfectly parrot
the scriptures and holy books,
blinded by knowledge.

Their pilgrimage,
and fasting,
and striving
but delude.
Despite their perfect practice,
they discover no destination.

Only the saints
who know the body’s heart
have attained the Ultimate, O Tulsi.

Realize this, and you’ve found your freedom
(while teachers trapped in tradition
know only the mirage
in the mirror).

Seeing the God in Others – The One Pervades All – Mystic Verses of Tulsi Sahib (Neech Unch Nahi Dekh)

“Look not on people as high and low; know
that the One has created them all.
There is no Brahmin, no Sudra, no Kshatri;
they are not apart.
Nor has the Vaisha a different caste; the
One pervades all.
Indeed, who considers them as separate,
O Tulsi, has wasted his precious life.”

– Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, Book of Shabdavali,

“Masters reveal to us the Path of Sound and Light. They still the mind and raise it to the skies within. The soul gets concentrated at the portal of the third eye and is in bliss. Ascending the celestial skies, the soul catches a glimpse of the mystic sky of Trikuti. The fortunate soul sets out on its journey along with the Celestial Melody. Listening to this Celestial Music day by day, it becomes detached.” (Mystic Verses of Param Sant Tulsi Sahib, Book of Ghat Ramayan)

The Mystic Poetry of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, India

Tulsi Sahab (1763-1843) told his followers that humanity is caught up in numerous delusions and attachments that might prevent us from taking advantage of this Golden Opportunity presented to us because of our birth into the human form. He said that life is short! Don’t waste a single day. Meditate upon the Positive Power – the Divine Light and Music of the Beloved Lord, and repeat his Name or Names.

Wake, 0 traveler, wherefore dost thou sleep?
The night has already ended.
Whosoever sleeps, looses all; whosoever wakes,
is blessed with great good fortune.
One who has forgotten the Master and the secret of his Primal Home,
He struts about in the world, unfortunate that he is.
Worldly attachments hold him fast in their grip.

Know thou the essence of human birth and
lose not this golden opportunity;
Break all thy shackles and get deliverance from the ceaseless cycle
of birth and death.
Swim across this turbulent ocean, 0 Tulsi.

Whosoever has concentrated his soul has
been freed from the fear of Death.
She [the soul] has ascended the Firmament with force,
and has found refuge at the feet of the Lord.
She has taken abode in the Infinite Region and has attained union
with the Beloved.

COME SAIL AWAY! Hymn of Tulsi Sahib

Whose soul is attached to the Word, revels ever in cosmic flight
Whose soul is attached to the Word, revels ever in cosmic flight;
Revels ever in cosmic flight, and realizing the Lord, plays with
Him.
The mystery of the Inaccessible and the secret of the scriptures he
unravels:
He reaches his Home within and its Essence he comes to know;
In the lotus feet of the Beloved he sees his true destination.
The happily married woman rejoices with her Spouse every moment,
O Tulsi,
For her soul is attached to the Word,
and revels ever in cosmic flight. (Saint Tulsi Sahib)

^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

This poem is written in praise of Heavenly Melody. It describes the powerful reverberation of Spiritual Sound in all spiritual regions, and how it is the source of all bliss. It manifests itself in the inner regions not only as Sound, but also as Light. Both Light and Sound guide the traveler on his inner or contemplative spiritual journey.

The second poem encourages the disciple to make the final effort and attain realization.

1. Garjat gagan gira dhun bani

Listen, 0 friend, to the thunderous roar of Shabd,
Which reverberates throughout the firmament.
Water, which becomes turbid by relishing earth,
Gets cleansed, of its impurities when filtered.
Waves of pure bliss emanate from the heart,
When the moss that covers it is removed.
Hold the arrow, be still, stretch the bow taunt,
Fix your aim sharp at the target, pierce the firmament.
The invisible world is contained within the human eye,
So say and describe all men of inner Knowledge.
Behold Brahmand (l) within, through your astral eye;
When that eye is opened, everything stands revealed.
The soul in Sunn (2) will hear resounding peals of Sound,
She will uncover and know the essence of Divine Sound.
They alone, 0 Tulsi, will know that perfect state,
Who have seen and experienced it themselves.

NOTES:

(1) “Brahmand”: Literally, the egg of Brahm; the entire physical, astral and causal regions.

(2) “Sunn”: The third spiritual region, which is beyond the precincts of Brahm.

2. Surat shabd cheenhe bina

Without realizing the soul and the
Word, all this is a vain show;
All this is a vain show till the soul soars
above and abides in Sahaj.
Cleanse your mirror with the ash of Shabd, the Word or Sound, (1)
says the Master, this wise:
Be in the company of the true [satsang], and gain thou
the target of thy soul.
Go, make thy abode in the palace, and know
thine own home.
With vigor, make the final effort, 0 Tulsi,
and attain union with the Lord,
For without realizing the soul and
the Word, all else is a vain show.

Glimpse of the Invisible

This poem seems to be a description of the commencement of the spiritual journey within. The account starts from where the soul current gets collected in the center behind the two eyes, the Third Eye Center.

Lightning flashed in my eye, 0 friend,
And brightly did shine the Light of the moon.
I got a glimpse of the Invisible within,
And thirst and longing for the Lord were aroused.
My ears received the boon of Unstruck Music,
And Knowledge came like the explosion of Light, 0 friend.
Dark clouds began to scatter and the sight Of the Divine Mansion was
revealed unto me.
Beyond the sun, the moon and the tunnel,
Tulsi beheld the abode of the Lord Almighty.

Within thine own self, behold the splendor of thy Beloved.

This mystic-poem by Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, India beautifully reflects upon the inward journey of the soul back to God:

Hermits, ascetics, celibates –

Saints show us the Path of Sound and Light,
They still the mind and raise it to the skies

The soul gets concentrated at the Door and

The fortunate soul sets out on its journey
along with the Divine Melody;
Listening to this Celestial Music day by day,
she becomes detached.

The Sleep of the Ages – Bhajan of Tulsi Sahib

“‘Wake up, wake up’! has been said for ages, but not once did he awake;

Not once did he awake, how shall he ever find the Essence?

For ages and ages he has slept; who but the Saints [Sants] can wake him?

He has fallen into the net of delusion; who can release him from this bondage?

Whoever talks wisely to him, he listens not a whit.

Through the ritualism of the pundit [talking head, religious scholar, expert, authority], the whole world has been deluded.

'Wake up, wake up’! has been said for ages, but not once did he awake.

Man continues to stumble in ignorance and thus goes on suffering from the shaft of pain.

He is bereft of the company of the holy; who but the Saint can put him on the Path?

If he were to meet the benevolent Satguru, the primordial mystery would be unraveled.

Indeed, O Tulsi, the Master would wipe off the stores of karma and drive the Angel of Death away.”

– Sant Tulsi Sahib, Book of Shabdavali

Living Masters are the True Spiritual Guides: “Going to the Sanctuary of Saints, beings can cross the worldly ocean. A human being blessed with the wisdom of Saints follows the Truth and realizes God.
