Top 10 AAC Games in 2017

Hey folks, I’ve been away for a week or two on vacation but I’m back! It’s high time I get back to talking about the G5 conferences, they’re just as integral a part of college football as the big time programs. So, to follow up my series outlining the best games of the P5 conference schedule, I’m gonna do the same for the G5.

I’m starting with the AAC, which certainly will play a huge part in the 2017 race for the automatic New Year’s Six Bowl slot. For the rest of the Group of 5 conferences, I’m limiting my selections to 5 games for the other conferences, but the AAC is so stacked with talent that I’m expending it to 10 matchups.

10. Tulsa at Toledo
Saturday, September 16

Tulsa is a dark horse in the West. The Golden Hurricane will certainly have a high octane offense but with enough defense they can make waves in the AAC. They have a high profile matchup with a very good Toledo team that should rate as one of the best inter-conference games between G5 schools.

2017 Top Games of the Week: Week 5

It’s the end of September and the conference races have officially started now that most schools are playing within their own leagues. There are a couple important games going on at the P5 level, but the bottom end of the top ten is admittedly a little weak this week. There are several important G5 games, mostly in the AAC as those schools begin their conference play in earnest. Finally, the FCS gives us a bunch of ranked on ranked games that will foreshadow the Playoff race at that level. Let’s dive in!

Top Ten Games of the Week

10. Indiana 2-1 (0-1) at #4 Penn State 4-0 (1-0)

Series Ledger: 19-1 Penn State
Last Meeting: 45-31 Penn State 11/12/2016

Like I said, the bottom of this list isn’t great football, but there is still some interest. Indiana hung around with Ohio State for one half in Week 1, if they can continue to exploit a few weaknesses they might be able to put a scare in the Nittany Lions, who had plenty of trouble keeping Iowa down last week. PSU has won the last three games in this series.

Video: GJ Kinne Back From the Dead

Forget for a second that Oklahoma faces GJ Kinne at the Golden Hurricane on September 3.  Sometimes we don’t remember the fact that football players are people just like us.  With stories from their past that make them who they are today.  I know this is a Sooner blog, but GJ, best of luck to you in the future.  I’m glad that it was God plan that you got your father back.

2016 Bowl Games: Dec 19

Miami Beach Bowl (Miami, FL): Central Michigan 6-6 (3-5) vs Tulsa 9-3 (6-2)

Series Ledger: 1-1 TIE!
Last Meeting: 41-18 Central Michigan 10/17/1987

Two Midwest mid-majors descend on sunny South Florida to square off in the Miami Beach Bowl. Central Michigan started strong but faltered in MAC play, barely scraping into bowl eligibility. Tulsa meanwhile are looking dangerous, they can score on basically anybody and assure this will be a high scoring affair.

This is what I put up with from the special little demon that lives inside of me:
I think I'm gonna get it really drunk, then bind it with duct tape, leave it somewhere across town, and see if it can find its way home.

“Heeeeey, you remember how OU fought and bit and clawed and scratched its way back from down 17-3 to winning at Tennessee in double overtime last weekend? So wouldn’t it be a real kick in the head if they got upset by Tulsa at home?”

Oh and the scheduling gods made this an 11 a.m. game, so my consciousness at that hour may, or may not, be optimum.
