Anna Langräfin von Hessen (1858). Franz Xaver Winterhalter (German, 1805-1873). Oil on canvas. Schloß Fasanerie, Fulda.
The strong coloration is striking. Winterhalter deliberately used it as a design medium. Winterhalter has ingeniously corrected the position of the arms in the sitter’s unusual posture, thus creating new visual axes that particularly emphasize the sitter’s torso and contrast the exquisitely worked face and dense mass of chestnut brown hair with the loose, extremely sophisticated construct formed by the billowing tulle and silk.
