SHIPS MEME: ‘a historical ship’ ↳ Henry & Anne (The Tudors)
I beg you, my entirely beloved, not to frighten yourself nor be too uneasy at our absence, for wherever I am, I am yours. No more at present, from lack of time, but that I wish you in my arms, that I might a little dispel your unreasonable thoughts. Written by the hand of him who is and always will be yours.
Mary I (18 February 1516 – 17 November 1558) was the Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death. Her younger half-brother, Edward VI, (son of Henry and Jane Seymour) succeeded their father in 1547. Edward attempted to remove Mary from the line of succession because of religious differences. On his death, their first cousin, Lady Jane Grey, was proclaimed queen.
Mary assembled a force in East Anglia and deposed Jane. Excluding the disputed reigns of Jane and the Empress Matilda, she was the first queen regnant of England. In 1554, Mary married Philip of Spain, becoming queen consort of Habsburg Spain on his accession. After her death in 1558, her re-establishment of Roman Catholicism was reversed by her younger half-sister and successor, Elizabeth I.
“All this time, all these years, I have wondered at your high pride and your vain glory. I have abhorred your voluptuous life and had no regard at all for your presumptuous power and your tyranny!”
“As a humanist I have an abhorrence of war. It’s an activity fit only for beasts yet practiced by no kind of beasts so constantly as by man.”
“How dare you look at me!”
“I did nothing to you. I was innocent. All the accusations against me were false. I thought you knew.”
“I don’t think anything, but I imagine everything. And what I imagine causes me great pain.”
“I have spoken to God so rarely, I do not think he would know who I was.”
“I know what you are planning, and if God gives me the strength, I will see to it that none of your projects ever succeed!”
“I want a divorce, and you will get one for me.”
“I’m not heartless, whatever some people think- quite the contrary.”
“No, you told me that we would always be truthful with one another! You said it was the definition of love!”
“Seduce me. Write letters to me. And poems, I love poems. Ravish me with your words. Seduce me.”
“Should I like something that accuses me of being cruel?”
“Tell me, do you prefer your place in this life rather than in heaven?”
“The thing I care for most is my integrity.”
“There should be perfect love and concord in this realm but instead there is discord and dissension in every place.”
“Though I love Your Majesty and I’m loyal to you, in every way, I cannot disguise my distress and unhappiness.”
“Without knowledge, life is not possible.”
“You can love, perhaps for a year, a month, a day, even for an hour. And in that hour I do believe you love as well and deeply as anyone else. But after that hour, you love not! You love another, and then another. Your love is most generous where it is most hurtful.”
“You think you know a story, but you only know how it ends. To get to the heart of the story, you have to go back to the beginning.”
