A day in infamy

December 7, 1941, started as a typical Sunday morning at Pearl Harbor, the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet Headquarters on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. That is, until shortly before 8:00 am, when Japan launched roughly 200 planes from six aircraft carriers in its first wave of Operation Hawaii—forever to be known by Americans as “the attack on Pearl Harbor” or just “Pearl Harbor.”

Today we remember the lives of approximately 2,400 Americans that were lost and more than 1,100 wounded. Marines, sailors, soldiers, airmen who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We remember the day that rallied our nation to enter World War II.

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. Kennedy were married on the morning of September 12, 1953, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island. The more than eight hundred guests included many notable individuals.
The bride, given in marriage by her stepfather, Hugh D. Auchincloss, wore a dress of ivory tissue silk, with a portrait neckline, fitted bodice, and a bouffant skirt embellished with bands of more than fifty yards of flounces. Her rosepoint lace veil, worn first by her grandmother Lee, was draped from a tiara of lace and orange blossoms. Jacqueline wore a choker of pearls and a diamond bracelet that was a gift from the groom. The bride’s bouquet was of pink and white spray orchids and gardenias.
The bride’s attendants, dressed in pink taffeta, included: her sister, Lee; Mrs. Michael T. Canfield as matron of honor; her stepsister Nina G. Auchincloss as maid of honor; and ten bridesmaids, among them the groom’s sister Jean and sister-in-law Ethel, and the bride’s former boarding school roommate, Nancy Tuckerman. Half sister Janet Auchincloss was flower girl and half brother James Auchincloss served as a page. Senator Kennedy’s best man was his brother Robert and among the ushers were brother Edward, brother-in-law Sargent Shriver, cousin Joe Gargan, brother-in-law Michael Canfield, friends Lem Billings, Red Fay, and Torbert Macdonald, Senate colleague George Smathers, and Charles Bartlett, who had introduced the couple.
The ceremony was performed by Archbishop Cushing, a friend of the Kennedy family, and he was assisted by four other priests, including the former president of Notre Dame and the head of the Christopher Society. Before the mass, a special blessing from Pope Pius XII was read.

Tenor soloist Luigi Vena from Boston sang Gounod’s Ave Maria.
The reception was held on the terrace of the 300 acre Auchincloss oceanfront estate, Hammersmith Farm, for more than twelve hundred guests. The wedding cake, four feet tall, was ordered by Joseph P. Kennedy. Meyer Davis and his orchestra played under a huge canopy.

Happy 86th Birthday, Jacqueline Kennedy!

“ There was this charismatic presence about her, made up in part by her intelligence, wit, and sense of the ridiculous. You never could be bored when you were with Jackie, because you never knew quite what to expect from her. She had this love of intrigue that often led to some sort of conspiratorial act…Jackie made life fun. She was irrepressible, witty, and wise. To all those who knew her personally and those who did not, she will always be remembered as utterly unique. She is greatly missed.”

Heh. Well, since you asked, lovely Anon, and I’m not the type to mince words….here goes:

DISCLAIMER: I sincerely, with all my heart, apologize profusely in advance if anything I say below offends anyone! Now, to proceed:

1.) I think Onassis was a disgusting filthy nasty just ewwww old toad. LOL

2.) I think that on her part, there were solely two reasons for the marriage (aka “that shit” as you so eloquently put it, heh): a.) He offered a wealth (so to speak) of security for her children, first and foremost, and for herself; and b.) He provided an outlet of escape & freedom for her & the children; his massive fortune enabled all of this.

3.) I’ve never believed for a second that any form, whatsoever, of romantic love was involved. This might be putting it in overly simplistic terms, but I think she might have loved Onassis - if she really loved him in any way at all - the way a person loves their principal supporter or mentor. JFK was & always would remain the one and only true love of her life, period, and she knew that.

4.) A mere month after the Onassis marriage, she was weeping about/for Jack - it was the fifth anniversary of his death. She told a friend who was trying to comfort her that JFK, and what had happened in Dallas, was all she could think about - and that she believed she would “never be able to be truly happy again.” She was right about that, of course. Another friend noted at this time that she was “truly a deeply shattered person….she was like a piece of glass that had been shattered and put together.”

5.) Who did she request to be buried beside? JFK. And she wore the wedding band he gave her till the day she died (and there are rumors that she was buried wearing it - I’m not sure about this, but I’m trying to find out if it’s true).

A couple of cute little footnotes to all of the above:

—Nancy Tuckerman, aka “Tucky,” who was Jackie’s BFF since childhood, said in a rare interview with author William Kuhn a few years ago that the Onassis marriage was “a mistake” on Jackie’s part. I dunno for sure, of course, but I *highly* doubt that Jackie’s best, most loyal, most trusted friend would go on the record saying something that epic if Jackie herself didn’t acknowledge it at some point in time.

—She continually referred to JFK as “my husband” following Onassis’ death. In late 1977, Jackie sent Mario Cuomo - a democratic candidate running for Governor of New York - a political contribution in the form of a check. When reporters asked her why she did this, she answered, “Because he reminds me of my husband.” <3 To Pete Hamill, a journalist who became her good friend in the early 80s until her death, she would emphasize her total love for JFK - who she referred to as “this young handsome guy who later became President."

—I’m going to be a total & complete bitch for a minute and actually *go there*: where was she when Onassis died? Yeah, about 4,000 miles away. Oh, and at the funeral? She wasn’t exactly what anyone would call grief-stricken, and that’s an understatement. Now compare that to what we saw after Dallas back in ‘63. Oh, wait. There is absolutely NO comparison, unless you can compare night & day/apples & oranges/hot & cold. Oh, and her will. She wrote about "my late husband, John F. Kennedy,” but no reference to that other guy. </done being a horrible bitch for now>

So in conclusion, yeah, I admit - I’m an overly romantic girl who wholeheartedly buys into the “myth” of Camelot - because from what I see, it wasn’t entirely a myth. At its core was this woman who was so insanely in love with, and devoted to, her husband; and just as he, in spite of all his major flaws, was beginning to reciprocate that perpetual love, their world came crashing down & they were ripped away from one another.

There’s no such thing as “Onassis” down here within the magical realm of Camelot ;) <3
