trying not to be spoilery here

anonymous asked:

If you have the time and if you don't mind, what are some books you really recommend? Doesn't have to be all time faves, but anything that pops into mind that you want more ppl to read and love, Extra points if lgbt+ , i got the whole summer with little to do and i wanna spend it reading some good quality writing and honestly so far your recs have introduced me to so many faves its unbelievable

[blushes profusely] oh wow, thank you!!!  i’m so glad you’ve trusted me enough to check out some of the stuff i reblog; that is like the ultimate compliment, i can’t even???  i don’t mind at all(!), fair warning though: i only started recording what i read partway through last year and my mind is like a sieve so i’ll do my absolute best to remember what’s sang to me in the recent past.  warning number two: i’m in an open relationship with absolutely every genre out there so i’ll try to note which belongs where so you can avoid those that hold no interest for you.

  • i’ll give you the sun.  i loved this book, the writing is fucking transformative and all the characters are so damn likable, while still being realistically flawed human beings.
  • the raven cycle (tetralogy).  definitely my favorite series since harry potter.  the writing, the world-building, the characters, it’s all on top-form.  i wrote a little, mini non-spoilery review of it: here, back when i was better (worse?) wordly-wise and my feels were brand new.
  • more happy than not.  i’m still not sure how i feel about this book.  it was hard, but it felt very true to the characters and the lingo and style matched the ages of the players and i have a lot of respect for that.
  • the watchmaker of filigree street.  woooow i loved this book.  i admit ‘historical fiction’ kind of makes me cringe.  it never precludes me from reading a book but it does knock it down the list by a book or five because they’re often very dense and very clunky and end up taking me ages to get through.  but this one was gorgeous.  i loved the plot, the attention lovingly placed on every character and the historical elements.  the surprise gay in an already brilliant book felt like winning the lottery honestly.
  • captive prince (trilogy).  okay, truthfully, i’m only putting this on here because the second book is such a high point for me.  it was never bad at any point but it had unfortunately been hyped far too much for it to live up to my, admittedly, very high expectations.  hopefully it’ll fare better with you?
  • everything i never told you.  i go back and forth on this one.  i like the writing a lot, i like the LGBT aspect a lot, and i like the mystery aspect a lot but there are definitely characters i would cut out entirely for sheer predictability if i could and that killed a lot of my enjoyment at the time (but i think much more highly of it in retrospect?).  so, take that as you like.
  • aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe.  if there’s a book that handles its characters with more care or respect or consideration then i haven’t run into it.  i love the way this is written and the people it’s populated with.
  • flying lessons & other stories.  a bunch of uber talented authors writing a bunch of uber diverse and LGBT-focused stories and, yes, that is exactly as awesome as it sounds.
  • the song of achilles.  it is utterly heart-breaking but so rich, honestly.

  • the diviners.  (also has a minor LGBT character, who may play a bigger role in the sequel?)  fair warning, i have not read the sequel, lair of dreams, because it is somehow still not out in paperback (yes, i read physical books, yes, i pretty exclusively read paperbacks so i can lug them everywhere with me, YES, I PRE-ORDERED THIS ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO AND IT’S STILL NOT OUT, NOT THAT I’M BITTER ABOUT THAT OR ANYTHING) so i can’t speak to that one finishing on a high note as i don’t know.  but this was the first historical novel i managed to like in a long while.  it does such a good job of fusing in 1920s lingo and dress and aspects that i couldn’t help but love it.  add in the fantasy elements and i can admit i’m the perfect sucker for it.
  • the scorpio races.  i’m not sure why but it took me a long-ass time to get into this book, i wasn’t flipping pages with gusto until well towards the end but - especially as i was reading so much YA at the time - i really appreciated coming across a romance that lets both people come into it as themselves and stay themselves, neither puck nor sean were ever smashed or crumpled or shaved away to fit into their relationship, which was so refreshing.  plus the water horses were fucking cool.
  • the night circus.  the writing, the atmosphere, the circus.  just… it is all very whoa.
  • all the birds in the sky.  i loved this writing style and these characters and the magical elements.

  • i’ll meet you there.  there was something about this and i just… ended up liking it way more than i expected to.  i might’ve just read it at exactly the right time, i’m not sure, but i really enjoyed it.
  • the invoice.  this is honestly just hella cute and so freaking surreal.  swedes, man.

  • why not me?  i like mindy kaling a lot.  i make no apologies for that.  plus you can read both her books in about five seconds, haha.

  • station eleven.  i loved this book.  the way the narrative is woven is so refreshing and i wish the comic book miranda was writing in this book was a real thing more than anything else in the woooorld.
  • illuminae.  hot DAMN this book was cool.  the plot was rock solid, the characters were hilarious and badass and the graphics made out of text and spiraling words and just the way this thing is put together?  shit, it’s worth your money and then some.
  • a robot in the garden.  okay this is just cute as hell.  i can’t even with tang, he’s the most adorable robot to ever adorable.
  • annihilation (southern reach trilogy).  (LGBT minor characters.)  okay, honestly?  i don’t know.  this was freaking zany but i was invested as fuck in all the kookiness for reasons i can’t articulately elaborate on.
  • the martian.  hilarious, engaging, SPACE.  what more do you want?

  • things we lost in the fire.  this is more atmospheric than anything but, damn, could this get me wishing i wasn’t reading this in the dark or looking over my shoulder to make absolutely sure no one was standing behind me.  it’s a book of short stories (by the way, i love books of short stories and i definitely realize that is not true for everyone) and each one is so well-delivered and stylized.  i really enjoyed reading this.
  • let the right one in.  okay, this is legit horror so definitely stay away if you’re easily squicked out but it is harrrrrd to find good horror (at least in my opinion) and this definitely, definitely qualifies.
  • horrorstör.  i honestly had such low expectations for this, a horror story set in a wannabe-ikea, but it ended up being so ridiculous and strange and funny that i was won over by the finish.
  • the girl with all the gifts.  holy unique and well-executed zombie idea, batman!

  • the bigness of the world.  there were definitely ones here that hit better than others but the ones i liked, i really liked!

GRAPHIC NOVELS (i read a lot of these so, um, prepare yourself)

  • saga.  (LGBT minor characters as well.)  this is world-building to a degree that i’m convinced did not exist before.  just, i can’t say enough amazing things about this series and the staggering amount of imagination that regularly goes into it.
  • ms. marvel.  heart-warming as fuck.  it’s definitely really easy to lose faith in the world these days, luckily kamala is there to remind you that people are primarily and genuinely good.
  • black science.  this is another one that took just an insane amount of imagination to cook up.  i got off to kind of a rocky start with this one but the gray-ness of all the characters really speaks to me, and that doesn’t really blossom until later in the series.
  • spider-man/deadpool.  this was very satisfying for my super duper spideypool-shipping mind.  joe and ed did us so good, and joe basically said in his sign-off: i made it absolutely as gay as they would let me, haha.
  • the wicked + the divine.  (LGBT minor characters that you’re going to get way too attached to, and retroactively.  it’s awful [sobs].)  the concept for this, gods reincarnating into teenagers before they burn up their hosts after a predetermined set of time, is so fucking cool.  the humor and the characters and the plot is all just aces.
  • iceman (LGBT MAIN CHARACTER).  okay, so this just started.  like issue #2 was only released days ago but 1) i am liking it so far and 2) marvel did it so dirty and barely advertised bobby - an openly homosexual superhero - was getting his own series, like, i found out about it the day before it went on sale and i keep my ear fairly close to the ground (not as close as some BY A LOT, but closer than the lay person i’d say) so if you can support it, please do!  pre-orders mean a lot in terms of numbers. :))))
  • descender.  admittedly, this starts out rooough.  because the main character, TIM-21 (and his little dog too), are annoying as hell.  he’s an android so there’s no dimension to him so he’s booooring as all get out but i am so glad i stuck with it through to the next trade because, probably picking up on the unsustainability of him as a main character, he gets shuffled off and the side characters get the stage and they rock so hard.
  • paper girls. (LGBT main characters.)  i’m kind of just convinced that brian k. vaughan can do no wrong at this point.  his plots are so tight and mind-blowing and badass.
  • monstress.  here’s a little tid-bit about me: female comic book writers are 100% more likely to get my money and my time because they are so damn rare and this series is unique, badass, and eye-opening.
  • black monday murders.  i’m a little premature with this since there’s only one volume and i usually try to wait until there are at least two but i check up on a volume two a lot so that definitely means something intrigued me!
  • nailbiter.  okay, i haven’t read the final volume yet ‘cause i’m reluctant to let it go but, so far, a series about multiple serial killers all being from the same town has me VERY HOOKED.

i wish i could remember more but this is honestly way better than i expected to do, haha.  they’re definitely not all my all-time faves but they’re ones that have stuck with me for one reason or another and that i didn’t feel i wasted my time on, so that’s something, right?  i hope this helps get you started and that you don’t think too awfully of me when you inevitably run across ones that aren’t your cup of tea!

everyone should read the engelsfors trilogy (and then come talk with me about it because i have no one to yell about this book with). it’s so good

  • all the main pov characters are teenage girls and they’re all very different in terms of upbringing, socio-economic status, personality, etc. you get to know each of them along with their families and friends and it’s just really lovely, discovering their nuances and hopes and fears over time, and i never had a least favorite point-of-view, they were all good and interesting which is not always the case with multi-pov books
  • they’re the chosen ones and they have to save the world from the apocalypse by working together despite their differences
  • they’re not very good at it
  • but that’s what happens when you grab a bunch of very different people and make them work together. the story is all about them learning to do just that
  • ~~contemporary fantasy with elemental magic and a good balance between real-world stuff and fantasy~~
  • also consenting body swap with character and relationship development, it’s really good
  • the main romance in the trilogy is between two of the girls and it’s beautiful slow-build goodness and it’s the best and they make me cry i love them so much <3
  • actually a lot of the characters make me weep, either in pain or joy or both
  • you will definitely over-identify with one or more of them and then you will cry about it
  • the supporting characters are also interesting
  • like you get the families of each of the chosen ones and all of them have unique relationships with them - some good, some not so good. same goes with friends outside the main group
  • and then you have the villains who also have their own reasons for doing the things they do. some of them are magical, some of them are not.
  • also mona who gives cryptic advice and makes money by selling magical stuff and scamming non-magical people and is generally hilarious
  • lots of issues are covered but it’s all done naturally through the characters and it’s good.
  • plus a really lovely slow redemption arc
  • basically it’s a book about teen witches saving the world while becoming friends (or girlfriends <3), learning to respect one another + work together, and growing into better stronger people. if that’s what you want in a book, GO READ THESE NOW AND THEN COME TALK TO ME ABOUT THEM

Rowan Whitethorn

SPOILERS under the cut :)

(Do we still need spoiler alerts this long after a book release?? Can’t hurt, right?)

What I really wanted to title this was Prince Rowan Whitethorn Galathynius, Consort to the Queen of Terrasen, My Beautiful Little Bird, but that was a bit too lengthy, and, you know, spoilery.

Over the past few months I have been so excited for ACOWAR’s release that I have dedicated hardly any thought to TOG, which, no matter how much I love ACOMAF, I think will always be my favorite. However, I have had three ideas/thoughts/theories in particular arise over the past couple months concerning TOG that I just need to write down and try to sort through. So what better place than here, right? Honestly, they’re going to be kind of a mess because I’m still working them out, but here we go. This post will only be concerning one of these ideas about, you guessed it, Rowan.

(Henceforth there will now be spoilers. Also, this gets super long and I don’t want to subject anyone to having this mess of a post on their dash in full, so keep reading…)

Hi, Im still high on this episode...I think the acting was superb by Andy and Danai..But its troubling how Rick was saying it might be him that dies. What do you make of that?

I don’t see Rick dying any time soon so I really don’t think there’s any reason to worry about that yet. Andrew Lincoln has top billing, and whether certain groups of people will ever choose to accept it or not, Rick Grimes is the fucking protagonist. With that said, I don’t think he is immortal. I do believe that he’ll end up dying before the end of the show. TWD is one of the highest rated shows on television so it won’t be ending any time soon (I believe I heard something about them claiming to have an outline up to season 12 a little while ago?); but I think Rick could end up being the final death on the show. It started with him and I have no doubt that it will end with him. This wasn’t really a part of the question, but Michonne and Carl and possibly Judith are going to end up being the final survivors in my mind.

Rick’s speech to Michonne in the van was written specifically to come back and haunt him in the finale and eventually, make him eat those words. I have no doubt. We know that Rick and Michonne love each other, and although they have yet to say that in such plain terms, they have both vocalized the idea that they can’t bear to lose each other. Rick telling her that they can lose each other, that even if one of them is gone the other has to go on and lead the family was Rick trying to placate Michonne and him trying to look ahead to the future. It wasn’t an easy thing for Rick to say, but he said it, and even though I do believe that his words were true, he’s going to regret them.

Now I might get a little spoilery, so if you don’t want any spoilers then stop reading here.

I’m sure that most of you guys know by now that Michonne is possibly going to have a near death experience in the finale. Rick has never really had to face the fact that he could lose Michonne. Not to this extent. The lineup, though traumatizing, didn’t result in him having to watch Michonne be brutally murdered right in front of his eyes. But Rick watching the love of his life fall to her death while he sits there, helpless and unable to move? I think that the shock of seeing something that horrific and being made to believe that Michonne is truly dead for however long he does is going to force him to confront the reality of the situation. In that moment, I think Rick will realize just how deep his love runs for this woman. Don’t get me wrong, he is already devoted to her in every way, but being forced to deal with Michonne’s death will make Rick realize that he can’t. And once he finds out that Michonne is actually alive, I’m expecting the greatest reunion scene in walking dead history, tbh. Even better than the Michonne jumping into Rick’s arms in 712. Hell, if I were a betting woman, I would bet that we’ll be getting an “I love you” from Rick and that Michonne will return the favor. It isn’t unlike Gimple and the writers to plan parallels and callbacks far in advance, so there is no doubt in my mind that Rick’s “we can lose each other” speech was written with this exact purpose in mind.

An Introduction

Hello!  You can call me Lawli.  I am a HUGE fan of Steven Universe.  One of my favorite things to do is watch blind reactions and read reaction blogs like @loreweaver-universe to sort of experience the show through fresh eyes.  Inspired by these, I’ve managed to convince my friend, who has asked to be called Strawberry, to try watching the show with me and allowing me to record her reactions.  (I wheedled her into promising to at least watch through the end of season 1A because… well, you know)

Don’t worry about posting spoilers on here, she won’t be reading this blog.  She’s more of a Facebook person, poor thing.  If you have any non-spoilery questions for Strawberry, though, I’ll try to record her answers.

About Strawberry:  30-something year old woman from the United States.  Married, no children (yet), favorite cartoon is Sailor Moon though she hasn’t watched it or really any other cartoons since she was a teenager.  She’s a big reader and loves a good story, which I promised her she’d get through Steven Universe.

If she has fun with this I may introduce her to some other cartoons and record her reactions to those, but no promises at this point.  But hey, let me know if you have suggestions.

Lister’s Abandonment Issues

I’m currently collaborating on a fic with @allsortsofsmeg and without being too spoilery, the subject of Lister’s troubled childhood and adolescence came up.  We agreed that his loss of several people early in his life might well lead to a desire for a “found family” which of course he has in the shape of the other Boyz.

I’m going to try hard to avoid woobifying Lister here because he’s my favourite character.  I’m definitely not saying that his childhood excuses any and all bad behaviour as an adult, just as it doesn’t in Rimmer’s case.  But it can help to explain it and as a fic writer and fan that obviously interests me.

So, Lister was abandoned under a pool table as a baby and didn’t find out the reason for that until he was 28 (going by his opening monologue in “Tikka To Ride”).  We don’t know when he was told that he was adopted, but his adoptive father died when he was six and some time after that, his adoptive mother either died or was no longer able or willing to care for him.

He lived with his Gran until she was killed in an accident when he was 13 and according to “Duct Soup”, he was then taken into care.  We know that he was bullied about his weight - i.e. nicknamed Fat Boy - but how seriously isn’t indicated.  However, his Gran’s death spurred him to lose weight and presumably (hopefully?) that got the bullies off his back.

When “Red Dwarf” the TV show begins, he loses his entire species. (!)  He takes it incredibly well in the show but in “Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers”, he reacts more as a human being would be expected to, spiralling into depression and drunkenness.

He settles well into his new circumstances, but offscreen gives birth to Jim and Bexley and is forced to give them up after three days.  His depression and decision to change the course of his existence in “Timeslides” is more than understandable to me in the light of this, albeit selfish with regard to the others.

Then in “Back To Earth”, we find out at the same time as he does that alternate universe Kochanski left because of his depression and drunkenness.  In Series X he’s clearly not over this and although he’s better in XI we still get his casual reference in “Krysis” to getting over his mid-life crisis in a matter of minutes, which is obviously false to anyone who’s been watching closely.

I know RD is a comedy show and not everything is intended to be taken totally seriously, but the end of “Back To Earth” alone is proof that Doug doesn’t just write everything to get a laugh and it’s perfectly legitimate to analyse the show.

Tagging people whom I know are particularly interested in this topic, but anyone is welcome to chip in.

Reaction is Here

Finally getting around to posting some of my reaction to the movie from yesterday.

Ok I’ll try not to be too spoilery-fied but there might be just a little.

So first off absolutely loved it. I feel like with Aoe and Tlk Bay redeemed himself from Rotf and Dotm. Maybe not completely but pretty close enough for me. Lol

I was all scared of evil Optimus pfffft there wasn’t nothing to be scared over. Quintessa still a witch though.

This movie to me felt like it went super fast. Like continuous action one thing leading to another and another. But I was able to follow along with no trouble.

I was warned of plot holes and that it would be like super bonkers. Well I could see why they’d say plot holes but me myself I didn’t see anything that would be like a serious plot hole. And as far as bonkers I really didn’t think it was that. If the parts they are referring to is the ones in thinking of (grant it that it is those scenes) to me they were hilarious comedy relief.

I feel like there was way more entertainment with in all the action.

I was not so for Vivian when first saw her in the trailer but she totally cool.

Wish there would have been more with Izabella and Squeeks so much potential there and absolutely adorable.

Speaking of Squeeks….super cute but holy shit what he can do (hence end battle scene) he like a Fixit from rid 2015.

Baby Dinobots:…..I want then all just in a place that is fireproof and with no breakable objects. Lolol

This maybe be spoiler-ish…..Bee voice….hilarious beginning totally save the day at the end. And I’ll leave it at that.

Talking fast didn’t catch some of the lines. If there is anything I didn’t catch it would be that. Can’t wait for DVD/blue ray so I can listen in closely.

I could kinda see the Crosshairs/Drift ship little bit

Definitely Yeager Program ship hell yeah

Ending was perfect.

Post credit scene:… spoilers here but I will tell you this and y'all can figure it out when you see the movie……..I FUCK KNEW IT NOT DEAD…….and I’ll leave it at that

Big thing that’s probably spoilery…..the trailers tooooootally take things out of context. Don’t trust em. They don’t go near what the movie is about. So please don’t base the movie on the trailers. Cause the trailers make it look like one thing but is totally not how it plays out. The whole Bee vs Optimus like literally happens in a few seconds no more same goes for Quintessa with Optimus and Optimus vs Megatron. Ok maybe the Quintessa part with Optimus may have been a little longer than a few seconds but not by much. Please trust me on that.

Above all absolutely wonderful movie. Thank you Bay, Paramount, Hasbro, and everyone involved in the movie. Superb job y'all.

Big Shout out to my BFF bro bot @jessicatheshark for taking me to see this marvelous movie and no I’m not exaggerating when I say marvelous. To me it was marvelous.

Y'all will see more of my reactions as fan art and the like Comes out and more watch the movie and such.

I’ll try not to be too spoilery until like the weekend. Hopefully a good portion will have watch the movie by then and if not and you don’t wanna be spoiled then be cautious looking at my blog. Any tf5 stuff will have tf5, tlk, Bayverse, Bayformers, and tfcu in the tags.

Now I guess we prepare for tf6 lol

Holy smokes was this a great film, and not just by Disney standards- it works on so many different levels! Here we have a children’s film that tackles issues like diversity, racial prejudice, and childhood bullying in a way that’s not too heavy-handed and easy for the target audience to comprehend, while also giving these kids that watch “Zootopia” a real message about trying your hardest, even if the world is a not so nice or even scary place most of the time. Couple all this with some of the best animation of animal characters I’ve ever seen, as well as a cast of people who don’t overshadow the film with their “stardom,” and you got yourself one of the best films of the year so far. In short, go and see “Zootopia.” You will not regret it at all.

“Zootopia” gets a 9/10

A Little Help from Friends

Downworlder Week - Day 1 - Warlock Day

Magnus, Ragnor, Catarina

Ragnor and Catarina try to comfort Magnus after his break up with Camille in TID.

Slightly spoilery for TID, for if you intend to read the series but haven’t yet, you might not want to read this.

Ragnor knocked on the door and waited impatiently. After a minute, he raised his fist to knock again just as the door was pulled open. Woolsey gave him an appraising look before speaking.

‘Goodness me, my dear fellow, you almost blend in with the grass behind you.’

Ragnor rolled his eyes. ‘Is Bane here?’

‘Why, yes,’ Woolsey said. ‘He never mentioned he was expecting guests.’

‘No worries, Woolsey,’ Magnus spoke from down the corridor. ‘Ragnor has a habit of turning up uninvited.’

‘You can’t avoid me that way,’ Ragnor said.

Magnus raised an eyebrow, then ushered Ragnor inside. Woolsey gave him one more suspicious look, before disappearing off down the hallway.

Magnus led Ragnor into the living room, where there was a fire crackling in the grate and a cluster of armchairs around the hearth. They settled down into them.

‘To what do I owe the pleasure?’ Magnus asked.

Ragnor, not one to beat about the bush, said bluntly, ‘You broke up with Camille. I wanted to offer my congratulations.’

@seasonofthegeek needs to stop inspiring me for fanarts :p (no not really but gosh dern it WHICH DO I DO FIRST)

Everyone go read The Trouble With Kittens now, and catch up before I’m ready with spoilerating fanart.

Get your angst buffering pillows handy because damn, it’s a bit of a ride so far. (It’s okay, I am here to give hugs and help you glare appreciatively at the author.) And when you get worried you can go back and read the ridiculously adorable and fluffy earlier chapters to ease your sense of foreboding and remind you that yes, Season can write happiness and surely it will all work out but for now bathe in the glorious tension and uncertainty :3

Domestic fluff, shopping fluff, grandpere pseudo fluff (he’s trying, so awkward), snark fluff, ChloNath angst n fluff.

And lotsa kwamis.

Spoilery bit below but I can’t really leave this out considering it’s something I’ve been through myself. TW / CW for high risk pregnancy, but it’s handled with care. Could be rough for some, though.
