truth about america

America began as an act of violence. America as a nation is rooted in violence which is one of the reasons why it’s one of the most violent nations on earth whether you are talking about Black or white. Don’t let that constitution fool you and all of this democracy stuff deceive you. What are its origins? The origins of America are criminal, and therefore, it’s what I call a crimagenic society in that it breeds criminality because it is rooted in criminality. Why are you surprised? What are the two major acts of criminality that brought this country into being? First one was the criminal destruction of Indian nations. Rape, and robbery, and thievery. Taking of lands and taking of wealth. Destroying people’s cultures and nations. Placing people in prisons called reservations. Slandering their culture and their character as people. This country is built on that and that’s the reality of it. The next major crime was the enslavement of African people; was the destruction of African civilizations. You talk about the disruption of the Black family, as if that disruption occurred since the 1960s and 70s. The disruption of the African family began with slavery. That’s where it started. And the disruption of African culture, the destruction of social relations, and arrangements, and institutions of African people began with slavery, and it has not stopped yet. And yet, millions of our people died in this process and were killed in this process. And we have an endless history of death, damnation, and destruction. The coercion of our people into work, the slandering of our culture and the slandering of our character, the lynching of our people, the physical abuse of our people, the racial discrimination against our people. All of these things with which we are familiar have been practiced from day one in this country. And these practices are criminal And therefore America is rooted in this criminality. But see, America won’t face this reality. And many of us won’t face it. And we won’t come to terms with it.

As a newbie to the fandom, are there any fics that are considered must reads? There are so many on ao3 and I'm not sure where to begin.

*updated January 2017*

We’ve put together a few posts for new readers before here and here. Everything in our personal faves post is beloved by at least one of us.

I’m not gonna say any of them are must reads, since you shouldn’t read a fic you don’t like for the sake of me so these are the ones that I see both highly acclaimed and widely discussed in the fandom:

4 Minute Window (E) Speranza WC:24127

“Look, if they catch me,” Bucky muttered, “they’re either going to kill me or they’re going to put me in a box with a little window and—Steve, I can’t.”

5 Times Steve Got Arrested and 1 Time They All Did (T) heartsdesire456  Words:5K

What it says, 5 times Steve Rogers ended up in jail (with and without Bucky) + 1 time all of the Avengers got arrested with him.

Ain’t No Grave (M) spitandvinegar WC:86k+ (WIP)

It’s six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.

For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don’t. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It’s very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.

I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.

Steve sits down hard on the steps.

but hey, you’re all right (M) beardsley Words: 5K

‘This is not my fault,’ Tony lies. ‘It was supposed to be a joke! Christ.’

‘Thanks to your joke,’ says Coulson, ‘we now have a code three-four-delta, with the variable being a Russian immigrant. We’re checking his background right now, but it might take a while. Meanwhile, I suggest you civilian-proof the Tower. If any SHIELD intelligence is compromised, I will hurt you.’

Yes, this is the story where the Winter Soldier is a Russian mail-order bride. Everything goes about as well as you’d expect.

cross this river to the other side (T) defcontwo Words:

Here is the truth about Captain America and the Howling Commandos that every World War II historian must come to accept at one point or another: we will never know everything. We won’t even come close.

So much was lost with the untimely death of Captain America. While the man beneath the uniform sunk to the bottom of the North Atlantic, the myth lived on, only to grow bigger and more unwieldy as the years went by. Now, it is near impossible to tell fact from fiction, to separate out truth from propaganda.

In 1943, the Howling Commandos wrote goodbye letters to be given to their loved ones in the event of their deaths.

In 2014, Sharon Carter finds those letters in a tin can in an abandoned HYDRA base.

Gravitation (E) Odsbodkins Words:10K

it’s a strange courage (E) mambo Words:27K

“The question the entertainment world is asking themselves today is… Who is Steve? Hollywood superstar Bucky Barnes was spotted at a wrap-party last night, serenading someone named Steve onstage. Not only was Barnes more than a little tipsy, but he also sang a song from the Disney Channel Original Movie that started his career–a bold move, considering the fact that he always dodges questions about it. But who is Steve? Why did Bucky leave the club alone? What does this mean about the rumors of a relationship between Barnes and his co-star Natasha Romanoff? And is everyone’s favorite poster boy gay? All this and more after a quick message from our sponsors!”

I’ve Been Careless With a Delicate Man (M) Paraxdisepink Words:9K

Steve lets SHIELD think he and Bucky were boyfriends so they’ll let him see the Winter Soldier in medical.

Steve Rogers turning up at Tony’s door in the middle of the night might be a bit out of character, but it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility. Stranger things have happened.
Steve Rogers turning up at Tony’s door with an amnesiac assassin - who may or may not have some of Tony’s personally designed hardware attached where his arm should be - well that’s just far too interesting to turn away, even if Tony is trying to avoid all things S.H.I.E.L.D these days.

Mistake on the Part of Nature (T) Words:1K by idiopathicsmile

Steve takes in Bucky’s betrayed look and Sam’s confusion, follows Sam’s gaze to the pile of mangled fruit in the trash can. Sudden comprehension fills his face.

In 1947, Steve Rogers marries Peggy Carter.
In 1966, the New York Times finds the lost letters of Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes.

perfectly right wrong number (T) melonbutterfly Words: 31K

It all starts because Steve is too dumb to handle his smartphone.

A wrong number AU in which Bucky Barnes doesn’t enter Steve’s life (meaning: Bucky wasn’t born until the eighties, but Steve is still Captain America) until Steve accidentally dials the wrong number. Wherein there is a lot of texting, some advice via Natasha and Darcy, a bit of pining, and a first date in an amusement park. Oh, and on top of being a disabled veteran, Bucky is a professional catwalker. Literally.

Schrödinger’s Romance (M) InTheMiddleOfNowhere WC:19K (underage, rape/noncon)

“It could be a relationship, it could not be. You can assume either until you see for sure the results.”

We all know those moments. Those moments when your family all gathers around you and asks “So, do you have a boyfriend yet?”. Bucky knows these moments all too well and, quite frankly, he’s sick to death of them. Unfortunately, being a 21 year old college student makes it harder for him to come up with excuses, and with Christmas coming up he needs to think of a way out fast. A chance encounter with a stranger through an old library textbook could just be the kind of miracle he needs to make it through the holidays with his last shreds of sanity intact.

Sing Me the Alphabet (T) thesardine Words:78K

There wasn’t anything left to salvage. That’s what Fury believed. It would have been a kindness to put him down.

When SHIELD finally releases Bucky from custody, he is not the man anyone expects him to be. The ruthlessness of the Winter Soldier is gone, replaced with a seemingly child-like wariness as he struggles to communicate his warped understanding of who he is and what was done to him. But with Hydra scrambling to regroup, SHIELD takes dangerous measures to secure Zola’s algorithm to use against them, and Steve is dragged back into battle, forced to weigh what’s best for Bucky against what’s best for the fate of the free world.

Then Bucky is abducted.

Steve races to recover his friend before the man who was Bucky is gone forever, but the rescue stalls, he starts to crumble under the weight of everything he has lost and everything the war has taken from him.

Meanwhile, Bucky confronts a terrible piece of ex-SHIELD tech that was in development long before Project Insight, but in order to survive, he must decide who he is going to be: the vulnerable Bucky Barnes or the indomitable Winter Soldier? It turns out there might not be as big a difference as everyone seems to think.

Slide To Answer (M) by relenafanel Words:8K

“What do I do?” Steve appealed into the phone. “I’m freaking out.”

There was silence on the other end of the line. It lasted so long that Steve pulled the receiver away from his ear and frowned at it. Pay phones were old. Maybe this one wasn’t working despite the obvious dial tone when he picked up.

“Ok,” a stranger’s voice said over the phone. “First acknowledge the fact that you dialed the wrong number, but be quick about it because my cab is a few blocks away from my own plans and I’m about to drop some truth bombs on you.”

Today, Peter was honest-to-god going to see Captain America himself up close, in person, and not from a rooftop or tiny crevice like a creepy stalker fanboy.

Even better, he was going to watch Steve Rogers make history by soldiering his beleaguered way through the most intensely awkward and honestly ridiculous press conference in the history of ever– jaw thrust out and spine ramrod straight. Trying hard to be polite and respectful in the face of adversity.

“[…] lesbians and gay men writing letters to their lovers and friends faced the special problem of wartime censorship. Military censors, of course, cut out all information that might aid the enemy, but this surveillance made it necessary for gay and lesbian correspondents to be careful not to expose their homosexuality. To get around this, gay men befriended sympathetic censors or tricked others by using campy phrases, signing a woman’s name (like Dixie or Daisy), or changing the gender of their friends. Sailors became WAVEs, boyfriends became WACs, Robert became Roberta. There must exist, hidden in closets and attics all over America, a huge literature of these World War II letters between lesbians and between gay men that would tell us even more about this important part of American history.” - Coming Out Under Fire: The History of Gay Men and Women In World War Two, by Allan Berube

anonymous asked:

What is the sakamoto theory??

the theory basically revolves around why exactly sakamoto left school suddenly. i dear hope this theory isn’t true. if so, then the entire series would’ve been a huge slap to the face.

a lot of people theorized that he left due to a terminal illness of some sorts, rather than the space program he was talking about. they believe that he had to leave because he was either dying soon or that he needed to receive better medical aid, hence moving to america. some evidence people have pointed out:

  • in the last chapter cover of the manga, it shows sakamoto in a locker as if it were a casket.
  • when asked if he was telling the truth about going to america, he replied “who knows”, rather than giving a definitive reply.
  • when asked if he had any regrets, he replied that he regretted not knowing the exact number of holes in the infirmary’s ceiling. this led a lot of people to theorized that he had spent a lot of time in the infirmary.
  • being sick as a kid would explain why he had never seen snow piled up before, as well as why he didn’t know about mixers (since he would’ve spent a lot of time in the hospital and out of touch with the outside world).
  • this specific scene with the snow was very suspicious, due to the extra panels of yoshinobu kubota wondering where sakamoto grew up. he wondered if sakamoto grew up in a tropical area, where based on common and repeated story techniques, it can already be assumed that sakamoto did not grow up in a tropical or common japanese environment.
  • if he was hospitalized as a child, it would add on and give more reasoning on why he has such an interest in space.
  • in the mixer scenes, sakamoto sang a song called “der erlkönig”, which is a song that depicts the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being.

there are some more, but that’s some of the bigger pieces of evidence. if this is true, that it would make sense why sakamoto goes through the lengths that he does to be “cool” and “awesome”, simply because he feels that he has live life to the fullest. he hides his sickness through this stellar facade, never failing to achieve what he can in his short time left in japan.

if this theory is true, then it would definitely make the series a lot more meaningful, but at the same time it changes how you originally perceived it. there’s another episode, episode 13, where the company is planning to release it as an (OAV? OAD?) somewhere in october i believe, so hopefully it will give us some final answers. but who knows. sakamoto could also be an alien for all we know, so we just gotta wait and see.

But dude:

  • America Chavez meeting Anya Corazon and Kamala Kahn and Rikki Barnes.
  • America Chavez meeting Carol Danvers.
  • America Chavez meeting Eli and hitting it off right away.
  • America Chavez wanting to kick Tommy’s ass to make him shut up.
  • America Chavez randomly dropping on Loki’s Asgard-missions, allegedly to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn’t go bad.
  • America Chavez meeting She-hulk and doing arm-wrestling just for kicks.
  • America Chavez meeting Thor and exchanging obnoxious-Loki stories.
  • I just need more America Chavez in everything, ok?
My fellow Americans, I implore you: do not let your fears speak louder than your hopes. Do not shout out the voices that speak differently than your own. Our diversity is a blessing, not a threat, not a liability. We can’t find the future in one story alone. Let’s begin to listen to each other. Let’s open ourselves up to the possibilities of different perspectives. It’s uncomfortable, unsettling, even terrifying at times. But it’s time to hear the truth about many faces of America. Time to begin to move forward together- many stories, many shades of skin, one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.

Fearless { Taylor Swift } -  When Maxon and America dance in the rain // You take my hand and drag me head first/Fearless/And I don’t know why but with you I’d dance in a storm in my best dress/Fearless //

Say Something { A Great Big World } When America is waiting for Maxon to finally say I love you // Say something, I’m giving up on you/ I’ll be the one, if you want me to //

Song for Dad { Keith Urban } - When America is reading her letter from her father // How much he loved my mother and my brother and me/And he did the best that he could/And I only hope when I have my own family/That everyday I see/A little more of my father in me //

Let Her Go { Passenger } (acoustic version) - When Maxon writes his love letters to America and realises how much he misses her // Only miss the sun when it starts to snow/Only know you love her when you let her go //

Home { Phillip Phillips } This would work in two places: when Maxon shows America his room or when Maxon shows America the yellow house he’s bought for her family // As we roll down this unfamiliar road/And although this wave (wave) is stringing us along/Just know you’re not alone/Cause I’m gonna make this place your home//

What is Love { Lea Michele } I feel like this song speaks Maxon’s anger when he realises the truth about America+Aspen, just after having spent a night together // Done chasing, why you chasing?/Something else/I can’t take it anymore/Done lying for the truth to…come out of your mouth/What is love?/When you don’t know who you lying next to, to you anymore//

America { Imagine Dragons } First the name of the song is perfect because America Singer duh! But it also resonates with Maxon’s proposal to America, when he tells her not to cry and also his plans for dissolving the caste system. // Rise to the top of the world, America/America, don’t you cry/Lift me up/Give me strength to press on/From farmers in the fields/To the tallest of the towers that fall and rise//

A Thousand Years { Christina Perri } The most perfect down the aisle song ever. It’s a bit annoying that it’s associated with Twilight but this is one of those epic love songs that has to be featured because Maxon and America’s love is most definitely epic. // Darling**, don’t be afraid I have loved you/For a thousand years/I’ll love you for a thousand more //

Some of these are with one or both ace, but most are just cute as heck/good as heck. A Shoebox of Photographs with Sepia-Toned Loving

Steve, and Bucky—

It’s kind of complicated.

Achromatic

The world doesn’t particularly need saving. The new SHIELD and its few, trusty associates are well on their way to whittling down the list of known HYDRA bases worldwide. No power hungry scientists have made unfortunate discoveries recently, to anyone’s knowledge. Nor have there been any alien encounters in three hundred and nineteen days.

For the first time in months, everything is more or less okay. Except it isn’t.

The Amazing Adventures of Bucky Barnes

Steven G. Rogers writes and illustrates the Amazing Adventures series, a set of super obscure children’s books about superheroes. Bucky’s daughter thinks these books are the best thing to grace the earth since hot chocolate. Unfortunately, they’re nearly impossible to find. But when Nat asks for a signed copy of the new book for her birthday, Bucky promises to do whatever he can to make it happen.
It all sort of escalates from there.

Breadth Requirements

Steve’s never met his Psych TA in person, but he’s a little obsessed with their snarky, flirty email conversations.

Steve’s never made any headway with the hot guy who sits in front of him in Psych, but he’s a little obsessed with his mouth.

Cleave

“Do you think they had him severed?” Steve’s throat seizes on the word. “Bucky’s dæmon. She was big enough that we would have seen her if she was there. If she was still—”
“There are other ways,” Natasha says faintly.

I Love You Like RLB

I love you like rlb has become a well-known, accepted and valuable component of American vernacular. The meaning of the letters ‘rlb’ is unknown, but is uniformly considered to be a statement of a great romantic love, commitment and sacrifice.
It was Dernier as first said it. Steve never imagined that something like that could have survived the war and all the years in between.
In which Tony goes insane trying to figure out why that phrase affects the Cap so much, Bucky teases the press, and Steve and Bucky love each other like rlb.

I Think I’m In Love

Steve craned his head towards Bucky and watched as his eyes fluttered closed. A tiny smile played at the other’s lips and all Steve wanted to do was lean over and trace their outline. Instead, Steve turned away again, idly massaging his chest and pulling his blanket tighter over himself as his traitorous heart beat faster.
“Nah,” he said, licking his dry lips and huffing quietly. Behind him, Bucky was already half-way to snoring. “I just got a shitty heart, s'all.

If Only You Could See Me (for the Pie that I am)

In which Steve is the proud owner of Frost, a semi famous local bakery in DC and despite the overwhelming insistence that it’s about time he start dating, Steve swears up and down he isn’t ready for that. Or as of recently, just doesn’t have the time because of Mr. Barnes – the highly demanding wedding planner on the phone who keeps asking for nearly impossible deliveries and maybeSteve would like to personally strangle him. Maybe.

They’re an awesome writer and they focus on plot and angst/fluff, not smut, plus they warn you when anything at all smutty is in the chapter so I’d read their stuff with a touch of caution, but it should be fine for the most part)

Bucky Barnes has no idea what he wants to do with his life and is stumbling from one temp job to the next. Hopefully he can keep his new job at Stark Industries for longer than a week…

Lepidoptera

“I was chosen for a program. A project. They wanted to make…better soldiers. There was a serum, they injected me with it…put me in a—a cocoon, I guess you would call it. The metamorphosis metaphor wasn’t lost on me, trust me, only instead of a butterfly, all that hatched was the same old caterpillar.”
The serum fails, but that is not the end of Steve Rogers. In fact, that is only the beginning.

Meet-Cute AU’s

exactly what it says on the tin. most are under 10k but theres a wide variety of genres so you can basically just read what you’re interested in. nothing explicit but definitely allusions and subtext of sexual content

Middletown: A Study of Suburban Life

In which Bucky is the new kid, Steve is the square who takes him in, Tony and Pepper fight over valedictorian a year in advance, Thor remains a golden god, Loki remains a drama queen, Natasha commits an act of vigilante justice, Clint somehow fails to make a your mom joke, Darcy is a Satanist, Jane is a goth, Sif is fine thank you very much, Sam climbs a tree, Peggy says no, Rumlow is a bully, and Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Coulson, and Ms. Hill are all very long-suffering.

Or: the story of the year Bucky Barnes finally learned how to talk to at least one other human being, discovered J. D. Salinger, started to try in school (kind of), got a haircut, landed a punch, almost got arrested, and kissed a boy on the mouth.

Mistake on the Part of Nature

Steve takes in Bucky’s betrayed look and Sam’s confusion, follows Sam’s gaze to the pile of mangled fruit in the trash can. Sudden comprehension fills his face.
“Oh,” he says. “Bucky found out about bananas.”
In which an American icon is mourned. But probably not the one you’re thinking of.

My Good Fellow (its short but its so cute i am DYING)

”Would you marry me if I asked, Stevie?”

Or in which Steve and Bucky get married three times.

Not Easily Conquered (series) [its rated M but theres no explicit smut have no fear. its also fucking fantastic]

In 1945, Steve Rogers jumps from a nosediving plane and swims through miles of Arctic Ocean to a frozen shore.

In 1947, Steve Rogers marries Peggy Carter.

In 1966, the New York Times finds the lost letters of Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes.

Open Your Eyes and See

Bucky is a veteran; a year on from losing his arm and the men of his team on patrol in Afghanistan, he has recovered enough to be living in Brooklyn. It’s here that he starts to think about what the rest of his life is away from the military and how he can move forward beyond that, including questioning his sexuality and finding out what he really wants, or doesn’t want. It’s while at the VA centre that he reads about the Gender and Sexuality Support Group, run by Steve Rogers, and takes the first step to working out who he really is.

Perfectly Right Wrong Number

It all starts because Steve is too dumb to handle his smartphone.

A wrong number AU in which Bucky Barnes doesn’t enter Steve’s life (meaning: Bucky wasn’t born until the eighties, but Steve is still Captain America) until Steve accidentally dials the wrong number. Wherein there is a lot of texting, some advice via Natasha and Darcy, a bit of pining, and a first date in an amusement park. Oh, and on top of being a disabled veteran, Bucky is a professional catwalker. Literally.

Rogers & Barnes: Partners

Steve and Bucky have to pose as a couple for a mission. Nat insists it really is the only option. She’s checked.

The complication: unbeknownst to even Natasha, Steve and Bucky’s friendship has been rocky ever since Bucky confessed his tender feelings and Steve left him out in the cold. Can asexual, completely-in-love-with-his-angry-best-friend Steve complete the mission and win Bucky’s heart?

(The answer is yes. Yay!)

sam deserves better than these assholes (series wip)

Ships at a distance

The year was 1930. Peggy Carter was on a one-woman mission to uncover the truth of Franklin county, the moonshine capital of America.
Meanwhile, Steve Rogers was fighting to keep the family diner running after his mother’s passing. The last thing he wanted was for someone to poke their nose into his and Bucky’s side business. Times were hard. They needed to make a dollar same as anybody else.
This was a story about the small people, who unknowingly propped up the Broadwalk Empire.

Slow Work

It’s 2011, men are allowed to marry, and Bucky is dead.
The future isn’t all that’s strange. Together in peacetime for the first time since before Steve took the serum, Steve and Bucky struggle to find their place – and each other – in the middle of a new millennium, new bodies, and new dynamics.
Or, just because you wake up in a century where everything you’ve repressed is magically okay, that doesn’t make it easy.

Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film

“Heil Hydra,” the enemy agent shouts.

“Heil this, motherfucker,” says Captain America, shooting off a rocket.

Steve and Bucky find out Hollywood has been busy since they went away. A historical survey, including but not limited to: one set of exploded genitals, a brief interlude in France, Mel Gibson and other masterworks of casting, eight Academy awards, several dinosaurs, and something Tony Stark has ominously dubbed “the masterpiece.” Art included.

Steve Rogers’ Dad Face and Other Common Hazards

Today, Peter was honest-to-god going to see Captain America himself up close, in person, and not from a rooftop or tiny crevice like a creepy stalker fanboy.
Even better, he was going to watch Steve Rogers make history by soldiering his beleaguered way through the most intensely awkward and honestly ridiculous press conference in the history of ever– jaw thrust out and spine ramrod straight. Trying hard to be polite and respectful in the face of adversity.
While a bunch of assholes with cameras and microphones shouted at him about Iron Man’s adolescent dick.

This, You Protect

The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect

Tin Soldiers

In his 2009 book on Captain America comic books, war photography, and American propaganda, Everett claims: “There is nothing to suggest that either the graphic novels issued during the war or the photographs taken during Rogers’ stay with the Howling Commandos can serve as a basis for a queer reading of Rogers and Barnes’ relationship. But even more importantly, there is nothing to suggest that such a relationship ever existed in the first place, and as such, those queer readings are not only misguided, but also libelous” (197).

In the aftermath of Steve’s return to the world of the living and the battle of New York, the academia and the Internet react.

Unplugged

A scifi AU with a fascist police state, a genetic caste system, a skinny young man who should not be alive for reasons too numerous to list, and the partially brainwashed assassin who shows up at his door in the middle of the night to send the world crashing down around his ears.

We Kissed Back Then

In recovering his past, Bucky stumbles upon certain memories he once thought he’d always leave buried: like the fact that Steve and he had kissed as children, as teens, as adults… They’d been in love far longer than he’d realized.

The World’s at Stake

Few soulmates are separated at birth by too much time – but when the distance becomes greater than one year all bets are off, with five years’ difference being equally as unusual as fifty.

Yet the one rule that has never been broken is that the soulmates’ lifespans always overlap.

So it came as something of a shock to the young boy in an orphanage in Brooklyn, New York, when his soul mark came in at the age of twelve and told him that his soulmate had been dead for almost sixty years.

You Stand Alone to Every Record I Own

Bucky Barnes is eighteen, a senior in highschool, and totally in love with his best friend. It’s okay. He’ll either get over it or sleep with every hipster twink in college who’s in a band. At least, that’s what Natasha says.
