A good thing:

Via UN Wire: Fewer people are contracting HIV in poor and middle-income countries, and more people already afflicted are being kept alive by antiretroviral drugs. Last year, 1.7 million deaths were attributed to AIDS, down from 2.3 million in 2005.

A bad thing:

Via UN Wire: The relentless Afghan war is leaving deep psychological wounds on an entire generation, according to psychologists. Even so, many Afghans don’t understand the concept of mental illness and often believe that individuals are under the influence of evil spirits. Among the most vulnerable are children, who have known nothing but fighting throughout their lives.
