It turns out I’m not a witch. Or if I am, I’m one who has no power over her lactose intolerance.

I went to the cheese/pizza party Friday night, and it was glorious. I drank two glasses of rye, I ate many ounces of different cheeses, I had a little truffle honey that migrated over from my fiancé’s side of the plate we were sharing, and I polished off a heap of bresaola and prosciutto. Pretty low-carb! Then the pizza arrived, and I had two Sicilian slices, and they were JUST AS GOOD as I remembered them being.

You know the absolute sense of disillusionment you feel when you cheat and the thing isn’t as good as it was supposed to be? I had none of that. And the pizzeria even forgot to put toppings on the Sicilian! It was truly just crust, sauce, and cheese, and it was still everything. I felt like cheating was totally the right choice.

And then I spent all weekend feeling horrible! Like, super tired, headache both days that Advil couldn’t cure, rash on my neck, stress eating to feel better, way over my calories terrible. And look how much weight I gained! Uggggggh, my favorite thing makes me sick.

I’m not sure it was worth it, guys!

Brunch at Coqueta

Enjoyed champagne and tapas with my dear friend Roxane last Friday. We had Jamon iberico- manchego cheese- Spanish olive and sardine bites, patatas bravas crispy and smokey with smoked paprika and aioli, shrimps sautéed in garlic and olive oil served with grilled bread, octopus cooked perfectly, and smoked salmon on toasted brioche with cream cheese and chives, Truffled honey and black truffles. Then for dessert, manchego cheese cake pops with caramel popcorn and churros with rich chocolate dip and raspberry powder.

I must apologize because I completely forgot all the exact names of the tapas we had, all I can manage is a decent description, but everything was great.

BLACK TRUFFLE

I have a black gold in my hand. My friend Roxane and I met in San Francisco for the first time after 10 years since we left college. Aside from treating me to a sophisticated Spanish brunch (we had tapas and champagne) she gifted me with this luxurious precious black gorgeous thing. She is one of those people who genuinely is a great human being, kind, caring, generous and add to that very gorgeous too ever since I met her in college and were roommates for 3 years.

I am replicating the dish we had yesterday at Coqueta. It was smoked salmon on toasted brioche and queso fresca topped with shaved black truffle drizzled with truffle oil and honey. I have all of these ingredients in my home except for the brioche buns and will just use cream cheese in place of the queso fresca. So expect a really scrumptious smoked salmon and black truffle post from me this weekend.

  • After a 9 hour flight to Frankfurt, Germany, hanging in the airport for 4 hours with my roomie and another girl studying in Florence, and then an hour long plane ride, I FINALLY made it to the beautiful city of Florence. The jet lag was rough but the views and the food, as well as the company, made it all worth it.
  • Sam (roomie) and I made it to our apartment around 2 pm (pictures coming soon) and got dinner at 4 Leoni with our other two roommates who are awesome. We all ordered the Fiochetti di Pera…it was heavenly. Then we explored a little after dark to get to know our part of the city better. We live in the old part of Florence, on the opposite side of the Arno from the famous Duomo. The Boboli Gardens are really close by and I’m excited to check them out.
  • Yesterday we had a walking tour and orientation with our program and it was cool to get an overview of the city. Danielle (other roomie) and I were in the same section so we got up early, had cappucino and pastries for breakfast, then walked around the city before our tour started. We stopped in the San Lorenzo/Central Market where I found an awesome ring (It’s darker in real life…I want to go back and buy more) and we looked around inside at the amazing veggies, meats, cheeses, etc. We also got to try truffle oil, including truffle honey with cheese which was DELICIOUS. I can’t stop thinking about it.
  • Speaking of food, like I expected, everything has been amazing so far. I loveddd my dinner last night which was linguine with mussels and calamari at Vico del Carmine. Today at lunch as a side I got grilled veggies and was very happy to find it included eggplant (one of my favs).
  • Tomorrow the plan is to get up early-ish, go to the market and get groceries, maybe do a little shopping, and check out some new restaurants.
  • It’s still pretty surreal that I’m living here for 4 months…excited (and slightly nervous) for the adventure ahead.
