troops out

anonymous asked:

high key can u give me a rundown of ur fav wacky wwii shenanigans

Okay friends today we are gonna learn about the GHOST ARMY, which, disappointingly, was not actually an army made of ghosts

pictured: the unit patch for the Ghost Army, which is DOPE AS FUCK

see one of the things that made WWII so fucking nuts was the totally bizarre level of technology. Like wow we invented the first real computer and radar but also if you wanted to see how many troops were hanging out somewhere you had to send a dude to fly over and take pictures manually??? this left A LOT of room for shenanigans

so the normal method of dealing with aerial surveillance was to cover shit with camouflage netting. Say you’ve got an nice air base that you really don’t want any bombs dropped on- you literally just cover that with a ludicrous amount of netting and some fake trees and BAM now it looks like just an empty field from the air

there’s a building under that weird lump

that’s cool! That’s really cool! But not cool enough

At some point somebody sat down and went “hey wait. What if…what if instead of disguising buildings and units as fields, we disguise fields as units”

holy fucking shit!!!

the British had used a bunch of fake tanks and like, boxes of provisions stacked up in tank shape and then covered with a tarp in 1942 during Operation Bertram and it worked really well, but they didn’t have a special unit devoted to just clowning on the Germans like that.

so the US military decides they do want a designated clowning unit and goes out and recruits a bunch of fucking nerds from all the art schools and makes them into the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops aka THE GHOST ARMY, WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU USE ANY OTHER NAME LIKE SERIOUSLY

the ghost army’s job was basically to go in, sidle up to a real unit, and then basically set up a fake version of that unit while the actual unit sneaked away to go dunk on Nazis where the Nazis weren’t expecting them

okay time to get into the really cool part of this story, which is HOW the ghost army faked being a real unit:

that’s a big ol balloon!!!

the ghost army had a stockpile of inflatable tanks, aircraft, artillery, cars, whatever, that they would set up and then poorly cover with camouflage netting so from the air it looked like someone had just done a real shit job of hiding actual materiel. They even had dummy soldiers that they would set up to make the scene look populated, since the ghost army itself was about 1,000 dudes regularly imitating units of 30,000 men

what’s really cool is that visual deception was more than just the inflatable stuff itself. If the ghost army plopped down a balloon tank, they then also had to go out with shovels and rakes and shit to make a fake track that a real tank would have left, because it turns out tanks are really hard on your landscaping

step 2: “spoof radio”

the last couple of days before the real unit moved out, the radio operators of the ghost army would move in. see, radio transmissions were done in Morse code, and it turns out every radio operator has a slightly different “fist” when typing Morse. A “fist” is basically typing style- some people would take longer to type out certain letters or would have pauses between groups or anything like. Anybody listening to the radio transmissions who was skilled enough could tell different radio operators apart from just their fist

anyway the ghost army operators would move in and basically listen to all the real unit’s radio transmissions until they had learned the real operators’ fists. Then they would take over radio traffic, imitating that fist so it seemed like the real operator had never left. I forgot to make this section funny because I was too caught up in how rad it is SORRY

step 3: making a lot of noise

the ghost army had special trucks fitted with huge fuck off speakers and a whole library of stock sound effects. Once the real unit left and the fake unit inflated, the sound trucks would come in, select a combination of sound effects that matched the unit they were impersonating, and then played everyone in the 15 mile radius of the speakers their fire mix tape

step 4: fuckin partying!!!

see the thing about impersonating your own units is that other allied units would know about it and might talk about it where enemy collaborators could hear. So the ghost army had to fool the Germans but they also had to fool their own army. Every time they impersonated a new unit, the ghost soldiers would paint that unit’s insignia on all the fake materiel, make fake signs with the unit’s name and colors, and sew the unit’s patches on their own uniforms

once they were dressed up as soldiers from the impersonated unit, the ghost army dudes would go into town and mingle with other soldiers from actual fighting units nearby and hang out in bars while loudly saying things like “YES HELLO I AM DEFINITELY A REAL SOLDIER FROM THE WHATEVER DIVISION, ABSOLUTELY FOR REAL STATIONED ON THAT HILL OVER THERE”

so anyway this bunch of weedy American art nerds staged 20+ battlefield deceptions between 1944 and the end of the war, sometimes fooling that Germans so successfully that they actually got shelled

I'mma leave you with this quote from the book “The Ghost Army of World War II” by Rick Beyer and Elizabeth Sayles, because it’s a quote from an actual member of the Ghost Army and that alone makes it funnier than anything I could ever write:

On another occasion, two Frenchmen on bicycles somehow got through the security perimeter. Shilstone managed to halt them, but not before they had seen more than they should. “What they thought they saw was four GIs picking up a forty-ton Sherman tank and turning it around. They looked at me, and they were looking for answers, and I finally said ‘The Americans are very strong.‘”

  • Azula: For what it's worth though. I agree with what you said.
  • Zuko: Really?
  • Azula: Yes. *expression serious* The general is an idiot and the plan to draw those troops out is never going to work. Veteran earthbenders have a dozen different ways to knock out a greenhorn regiment from a distance. I mean, they could just start a landslide from a mile away, and those troops are finished. You're going to need master Firebenders and people who've spent their lives fighting earthbenders to counter their long-range efforts and draw them into fighting position.
  • Zuko: …That wasn't really the point of my objection, Azula.
  • Azula: Hm? Oh, right, the whole 'sacrificing our young soldiers' thing. *shook her head* You're too soft-hearted for your own good, Zuzu.
  • Zuko: I'm sorry for caring!

The first time Tony bought out a troop of their girl scout cookies, he felt so sick after eating all of it for the next two months. But when the next season came, he couldn’t resist buying out another troop. So he hosted a Girls Scout Cookie party on his & Rhodey’s senior year in MIT.

He sent all the cookies to Rhodey and his Air Force buddies the next year after that. And the next, and the next and so on.

One year, Tony overheard one of his employee about his daughter’s troop having a slow sale at their spot at the local grocery store. Tony then made Pepper organized a ‘bring your girl scout troop week’ to sell cookies to all the departments. That started the annual Girl Scout Week at all SI offices around the State/World. During those weeks, SI would even serve cookies at their business meetings. [Later on, Wakanda would receive cookies, too].

The Avengers took the Girl Scout Season in stride. They eat everything. No one messes with Natasha’s share though. Steve learned the hard way.

BREAKING: Trump Weighs Mobilizing National Guard for Immigration Roundups: AP
A draft memo obtained by The Associated Press outlines a Trump administration proposal under consideration to mobilize as many as 100,000 National Guard troops to round up unauthorized immigrants. Millions of those who would be affected in 11 states live nowhere near the Mexico border.

(AP) – The Trump administration is considering a proposal to mobilize as many as 100,000 National Guard troops to round up unauthorized immigrants, including millions living nowhere near the Mexico border, according to a draft memo obtained by The Associated Press.

The 11-page document calls for the unprecedented militarization of immigration enforcement as far north as Portland, Oregon, and as far east as New Orleans, Louisiana.

Four states that border on Mexico are included in the proposal — California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas — but it also encompasses seven states contiguous to those four — Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Governors in the 11 states would have a choice whether to have their guard troops participate, according to the memo, written by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, a retired four-star Marine general.

While National Guard personnel have been used to assist with immigration-related missions on the U.S.-Mexico border before, they have never been used as broadly or as far north.

The memo is addressed to the then-acting heads of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It would serve as guidance to implement the wide-ranging executive order on immigration and border security that President Donald Trump signed Jan. 25. Such memos are routinely issued to supplement executive orders.

Also dated Jan. 25, the draft memo says participating troops would be authorized “to perform the functions of an immigration officer in relation to the investigation, apprehension and detention of aliens in the United States.” It describes how the troops would be activated under a revived state-federal partnership program, and states that personnel would be authorized to conduct searches and identify and arrest any unauthorized immigrants.

Requests to the White House and the Department of Homeland Security for comment and a status report on the proposal were not answered.

The draft document has circulated among DHS staff over the last two weeks. As recently as Friday, staffers in several different offices reported discussions were underway.

If implemented, the impact could be significant. Nearly one-half of the 11.1 million people residing in the U.S. without authorization live in the 11 states, according to Pew Research Center estimates based on 2014 Census data.

Use of National Guard troops would greatly increase the number of immigrants targeted in one of Trump’s executive orders last month, which expanded the definition of who could be considered a criminal and therefore a potential target for deportation. That order also allows immigration agents to prioritize removing anyone who has “committed acts that constitute a chargeable criminal offense.”

Under current rules, even if the proposal is implemented, there would not be immediate mass deportations. Those with existing deportation orders could be sent back to their countries of origin without additional court proceedings. But deportation orders generally would be needed for most other unauthorized immigrants.

The troops would not be nationalized, remaining under state control.

Spokespeople for the governors of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oregon and New Mexico said they were unaware of the proposal, and either declined to comment or said it was premature to discuss whether they would participate. The other three states did not immediately respond to the AP.

The proposal would extend the federal-local partnership program that President Barack Obama’s administration began scaling back in 2012 to address complaints that it promoted racial profiling.

The 287(g) program, which Trump included in his immigration executive order, gives local police, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers the authority to assist in the detection of immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally as a regular part of their law enforcement duties on the streets and in jails.

The draft memo also mentions other items included in Trump’s executive order, including the hiring of an additional 5,000 border agents, which needs financing from Congress, and his campaign promise to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

The signed order contained no mention of the possible use of state National Guard troops.

According to the draft memo, the militarization effort would be proactive, specifically empowering Guard troops to solely carry out immigration enforcement, not as an add-on the way local law enforcement is used in the program.

Allowing Guard troops to operate inside non-border states also would go far beyond past deployments.

In addition to responding to natural or man-made disasters or for military protection of the population or critical infrastructure, state Guard forces have been used to assist with immigration-related tasks on the U.S.-Mexico border, including the construction of fences.

In the mid-2000s, President George W. Bush twice deployed Guard troops on the border to focus on non-law enforcement duties to help augment the Border Patrol as it bolstered its ranks. And in 2010, then-Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced a border security plan that included Guard reconnaissance, aerial patrolling and military exercises.

In July 2014, then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry ordered 1,000 National Guard troops to the border when the surge of migrant children fleeing violence in Central America overwhelmed U.S. officials responsible for their care. The Guard troops’ stated role on the border at the time was to provide extra sets of eyes but not make arrests.

Bush initiated the federal 287(g) program — named for a section of a 1996 immigration law — to allow specially trained local law enforcement officials to participate in immigration enforcement on the streets and check whether people held in local jails were in the country illegally. ICE trained and certified roughly 1,600 officers to carry out those checks from 2006 to 2015.

The memo describes the program as a “highly successful force multiplier” that identified more than 402,000 “removable aliens.”

But federal watchdogs were critical of how DHS ran the program, saying it was poorly supervised and provided insufficient training to officers, including on civil rights law. Obama phased out all the arrest power agreements in 2013 to instead focus on deporting recent border crossers and immigrants in the country illegally who posed a safety or national security threat.

Trump’s immigration strategy emerges as detentions at the nation’s southern border are down significantly from levels seen in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Last year, the arrest tally was the fifth-lowest since 1972. Deportations of people living in the U.S. illegally also increased under the Obama administration, though Republicans criticized Obama for setting prosecution guidelines that spared some groups from the threat of deportation, including those brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

Last week, ICE officers arrested more than 680 people around the country in what Kelly said were routine, targeted operations; advocates called the actions stepped-up enforcement under Trump.

The Forbidden City: The Former Soviet Military Base at Wünsdorf

Wuensdorf, once called “The Forbidden City,” was the biggest base for the Soviet armed forces in communist East Germany from 1945 until the last Soviet troops left in the early 1990s following the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany. While Soviet troops pulled out of eastern Europe after 1989, Russian troops have in recent years intervened in Ukraine. The NATO military alliance has strengthened its presence in the Baltic states in an effort to prevent similar Russian intervention there.

You barely stirred as he pulled away and Draco found that he couldn’t tear his gaze away from you. The ringing of the Floo continued, but it became white noise to him. He had tunnel vision, solely focused on your features, on taking in every detail that the moonlight peeking through his curtains provided.

His fingers traced your nose and the shape of your lips, you murmured something unintelligible and Draco froze, thinking he had woken you up. But sleep was not letting go of you and Draco continued his quest, his fingertip skirting across your eyelashes before skimming over your eyebrows. You were breathtakingly beautiful and Draco finally recognized the emotions he saw in others’ eyes as he witnessed them looking at their soulmate.

DAY #13 [vday challenge] (pt 2)

A/n: Here’s part 2! I hope you enjoy it!
Prompt: “I hate Valentine’s day.”

“I hate Valentine’s day,” John mumbled as he cut the call.

It was bloody midnight and Sherlock had called him to talk about his love life. Could the detective possibly annoy him more?

Beside him, Rosie shivered a little under the blanket and he pulled his daughter close. She was his lifeline now, with Mary gone.

His heart tightened at her name. A year and a half had gone by, yet he hadn’t moved on. She was a part of him, his heart would still continue to beat faster at the sound of her name.

He suppressed a sob and kissed his daughter’s forehead, whispering the promise he made to her every night- he’d protect her with everything he had.

Sherlock woke up early next morning, and texted John to call him as soon as he was awake.

A minute later he was out and in the living room, talking to his best friend in hushed tones so as to not wake the sleeping y/n.

Y/n, however, crept to the door and opened it a smidge. She knelt silently next to it, listening intently.

“You have to help me, John,” Sherlock was saying.

“She’s very upset. I disappointed her and I think she expects me to make it up to her.”

Y/n’s lips curled into a small smile.

“Alright,” the detective finally said and cut the call.

Y/n trooped out of the room at a sudden thought that flashed across her mind.

Sherlock stopped momentarily at your sight and she saw his shoulders droop after he studied her.

“You heard me,” the detective stated, his eyes narrowing down at her.

“Yes. And I forgive you for yesterday,” y/n retorted.

Sherlock took her hands in his, “Thank you, but we should go on the date I promised we’d have.”

Y/n smiled at the dark haired slueth.
“I would love to Sherlock but I think we should ask John and Rosie to come over today. We haven’t been with them for a long time now and it is plausible that John missed Mary a little too much yesterday,” y/n finished, looking into his beautiful blue eyes.

A flicker of something passed over Sherlock’s eyes and was gone before y/n could figure out what it was. Was it pride? ..Love?

He cast y/n a rare smile.
“If you say so, Y/n. I love you.”

Surprisingly enough, he pulled y/n close and planted a soft kiss on her forehead; turning around to go to his bedroom even before she had a chance to react.

Oh, how she loved him.

“I’ve missed you,” Sherlock cooed, picking up Rosie swiftly in his arms.

When the detective was with Rosie, he was something else entirely. He was so easy with her, always knowing how to hush her up or keep her entertained.

Y/n watched this as she served the dinner, her eyes momentarily watering at the sight. A loss was a loss, but Sherlock did his best to be the godfather John and Mary had wanted him to be.

John looked over at Y/n and then at Sherlock, smiling a little.

Rosie rattled off a bit of gibberish as she tried to wriggle out of Sherlock’s hold. He set her down, as she ran off to explore the apartment.

John looked on as she tottered across the room, her eyes widening at all the lab equipments she’d never seen before.

“She seems to have quite a liking to science don’t you think?” Sherlock asked John, smiling slyly.

“Oh don’t you dare get my daughter into all this. Can’t have fingers back at my house too!” John retorted.

Y/n laughed at the duo.

“I’ll watch out for little Rose, don’t you worry, John,” y/n assured him, patting his arm.

John chuckled, casting y/n a knowing smile. Sherlock was smiling at her too, something he didn’t do very often and it made her warm inside.

John looked at both of them and shook his head.
“You know, if you married Sherlock, you’d be Rosie’s godmother too,” he said casually, slurping at the soup.

Sherlock almost choked on his soup as y/n blushed a shade of red that was darker than the color of Rosie’s dress.

John quickly lightened the mood by launching into stories of Rosie, as she tottered around.
Still, the words he had said had seemed to affect Sherlock. He was listening to John intently and feeding Rosie too but his mind seemed to be working on something else, possibly what John had said.

Y/N watched him, running around Rosie and the thought of him being a father, her husband, warmed her insides till she thought she was going to burst. From what she was witnessing now, her mind could only picture one thing- Sherlock being a doting father to her child.

She spent the rest of the night trying to hide her blush, her mind racing with the thoughts of a beautiful future.

This flag was carried by Colonel Stand Watie’s Cherokee Mounted Rifles; the body of the flag is the First National pattern flag of the Confederate States; the canton is blue with eleven white stars in a circle, surrounding five red stars representing the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole); the large red star in the center represents the Cherokee Nation. “Cherokee Braves” is lettered in red in the center of the white stripe.

The 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles was organized in July 1861, under the command of Colonel John Drew, and consisted of full-blood Cherokees. The 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles was organized under the command of Colonel Stand Waite, and consisted of Cherokees of mixed blood. A portion of Drew’s regiment deserted in late 1861; the majority of the remainder deserted following the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Fort Wayne in October 1862.

The remaining members of Drew’s regiment combined with Waite’s and were reorganized as the 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles; during the Civil War Waite’s regiment participated in twenty-seven major engagements and numerous skirmishes. Most of his activities utilized guerilla warfare tactics.

The flag was one of two captured by Lieutenant David Whittaker of Company B, 10th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry at Locust Grove, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, on July 3, 1862.

Following the Battle of Locust Grove, Lieutenant Whittaker continued his military career, serving as provost marshal for the 1st Division of the Army of the Frontier and in St. Louis, Missouri. While in St. Louis, he was a member of a Board of Officers that examined and reported upon the qualifications of applicants for appointment as commissioned officers of colored troops. He was mustered out of service on August 19, 1864 at the expiration of his enlistment.

Returning to Doniphan County, Kansas, Whittaker was elected to the Kansas legislature in 1869 and re-elected the following year. In March 1869 he was appointed one of the commissioners to audit civilian claims from the 1864 Price Raid. In 1870 Whittaker was appointed adjutant general of Kansas and confirmed by the Kansas Senate with the rank of colonel. He served in that capacity during Governor James Harvey’s term of office. David Whittaker died on September 6, 1904 at Topeka, Kansas.

Our Little Secret (Rick x Reader)

Word count: 2,278

Warnings: Cursing.

“Imagine you’re Negan’s adopted daughter, and you’re dating Rick without him knowing.”

(This is a request from @mrsnegan25. I hope y'all enjoy it!)
As sunlight poured into the room, my eyes slowly creaked open. The room was silent except for a light snore coming from behind me. A tired smile graced my lips and I turned to see Rick Grimes, the love of my life, sleeping like a rock. The corners of my lips pulled back in admiration of his peaceful state; rarely did anyone ever see Rick Grimes in peaceful mode. I didn’t want to wake him, but I couldn’t resist brushing my fingers across his stubbly face. He stirred in his sleep and it wasn’t long before his bright blue eyes met mine.

“Good morning,” I greeted warmly, running my fingers through his hair.

“‘Mornin’,” he replied in a deeper voice and with a sleepy half-grin. “Sleep well?”

“Absolutely,” I nodded, slipping my hand down his bare chest. “Best sleep I’ve had in a long while. It was lucky that I could sneak out last night.” He took my hand in his, gently pressing his lips to my knuckles.

“Glad to hear it. What’s your plan today?” He asked, looking hopefully into my eyes.

“Well, I don’t think my dad’s planned to plunder anyone for today,” I joked “As far as I know, I’m free.”

“Really?” He cheekily scooted closer to me. “Well, since you have so much time on your hands,” he suggested slowly as he slid his hand under my shirt, “why don’t we take advantage of it?”

“Can’t argue with that,” I seductively threw back at him. His lips slowly but hungrily melded against mine, but before we could get any further the baby monitor went off. Rick sighed, rolling away from me. “I’ll be back.”

“Hey,” I said softly, putting my hand on his shoulder. “Let me get her. I haven’t seen her in a while, you know.” He smiled at me and nodded with a “thank you.”

I quickly pecked his lips, and went straight to Judith’s room. I had met Rick at the Hilltop whenever one of the returning groups tried to kill Gregory. I was sent to make sure they got the job done, but Rick’s group took care of that. Seeing him covered in another man’s blood didn’t help my first impression of him, but that quickly changed whenever he looked up at me and nonchalantly said, “What?” I couldn’t stop myself from laughing, and he immediately softened up. I had to tell him who I was, but that didn’t change his opinion of me, and the rest is history.

to see her standing in her crib. “Hi, baby girl,” I greeted with a big smile. “Good morning!” She stuck out her arms, wanting me to take her, and I quickly obliged. “Ooh, someone’s getting so big,” I giggled as I placed her on my hip. “Let’s go make breakfast. Daddy needs to get ready.” We made our way into the kitchen, and I started getting the food ready. I set Judith down as I started making the food on the stove so she wouldn’t get burnt. Before I finished, I noticed Michonne walking out of the gates with a rifle. I furrowed my eyebrows, wondering where she was going and what she was doing.

Two strong arms suddenly made their way around my waist, and a stubbly chin rested in the crook of my neck. “Smells good,” Rick murmured. “You didn’t have to do this, y'know.”

“I’m making up for whatever my dad does,” I answered, leaning back on him. He tenderly pressed his lips against my cheek. “Where’s Michonne off to?” I curiously asked.

“Practicing,” he replied, pressing a kiss behind my ear. A cheerful squeal came from behind us, and we looked down to see Judith begging her father to pick her up. “Hey,” he smiled warmly, scooping the little girl into his arms. “How’s my baby?” He asked, kissing her nose and making her giggle, wrapping her little fingers into his curly locks.

My heart fluttered at the sight of them. This was the closest thing I have to a family of my own, but it still hurt to think that they were still under the power of my father. I shook the feeling, and went to the bottom of the stairs to get Carl. “Carl!” I called. “Food’s ready!”

“I could smell it from up here,” he answered, coming down the steps. “Thanks, (Y/n).” He pounded my knuckles as he went straight for a plate.
We sat and ate quietly for a while. I asked how everyone was coping–especially Maggie–and they asked me how Daryl was doing. I knew things weren’t exactly easy for the time being, and I hated telling them the truth about Daryl’s living conditions. I admitted that I sneak him rations at times, which made them seem to feel a little bit better. I told them everything I knew about when they would come to collect and what they wanted. Not one of the Saviors knew about my frequent visits to Alexandria, and I intended to keep it that way.

Suddenly, we heard the sound of trucks and motorcycles coming from the gates. My heart fell as we ran to the window. Sure enough, there stood the silhouette of my father and his beloved Lucille.

“Carl, go take Judith upstairs,” Rick commanded quietly. He quickly obeyed, taking his sister out of sight.

“What’s he doing here so early?!” I whisper-yelled.

“I don’t know,” Rick shook his head. “Luckily, we already have the rations set apart.” He turned to me, placing his hands desperately on my shoulders. “You don’t need to be seen here. You’ll get into a world of trouble if they see you.”

“Rick, "I can’t leave you all here to deal with them by yourselves-”

“It’s okay,” he reassured me. A hint of panic laced his tone. “It’s gonna be fine.”
“You’re shaking,” I sighed, looking down at his quivering hand on my left shoulder.

He scrunched his face in frustration but shook it off and looked straight into my eyes. “It’s gonna be fine. If you can, come back later. Okay?” I sighed, pressing my lips into a firm line and casting my eyes to the ground. “(Y/n),” he pleaded, placing two fingers below my chin.

I looked back up at him, trying to hold back tears, and nodded. “Okay.” Rick pulled me into a tight embrace, kissing the top of my head. We pulled slightly away from each other, and smashed our lips together. I held him as tightly and as long as I could. Seconds later, we released each other, and with once final glance I went to Rick’s room to grab my stuff, and he went to the gate.

As I gathered my things, curiosity got the best of me, and I went straight to the window, watching to see what my dad was planning. Arat had told the troops to “move out,” and my dad was enjoying Rick’s misery which made my blood boil. The Saviors started going through houses and storage areas without hesitation. What puzzled me is that Rick said they’d set aside half of what they had. My dad said he’d take only half. This was totally pushing it. The other problem was getting out of the house. The Saviors were everywhere, and they all know who I am, and would tell my dad in a heartbeat.

With my bag strapped on my back and the hood of my jacket up, I decided I’d make a run for the back when the coast was clear. I didn’t see anyone near the house, and I prepared to run. My plan was cut short by glass breaking and a gunshot and I jumped back into the room, hiding under the bed. I heard Carl’s voice shouting at whoever was trying to raid the house, then Rick’s voice, then my dad’s voice probably shooting his mouth off like he usually does.

My heart pounded in my chest as I waited for it to get quiet again. Once the noise died down, I got up from my hiding place and looked out the door.

The coast was clear.

I held on to my bag, and ran straight out the back door, sneaking my way behind the houses and out of the Saviors’ sights. The hardest part would be the gate. Luckily, it was still open. I slinked my way around the back of the house I was behind, then lit it for the gate. I effortlessly made my escape, and made my way home as quickly as I could.

A pounding on my door made me jump from my bed. I quickly got up and answered it, already knowing who it was: my father, Negan.

Now, he’s not my biological father. My father was bitten in the beginning of the outbreak, so we were left to fend for ourselves. Unfortunately, she was fatally wounded in a hit and run for our supplies by a small group of men. Luckily, she made sure I was hidden and they never found me but I had to watch my mother die and put her down afterwards. For nearly a week, I was on my own living on scraps and minimal amounts of water after those men had taken everything. Then, a miracle happened: Negan, Simon, and two of his men found me there. The two men were intent on raiding the area, raping me, and killing me. In that moment, Negan felt a soft spot for me and told them to back off, then offered to take me in as his own. I owe my life to him; anytime he asks me to go on runs, I am more than willing.

The only problem now was whether or not I could keep Rick and I’s relationship a secret.

“Hiya, (Y/n)!” My dad greeted with a theatrical smile, walking right in. “Whatcha up to?”

“Hey, dad,” I replied. “I’ve just been here all day. What’d you do?”

“Oh, you know, I was just itching to go see those sorry shits down in Alexandria and take our stuff.”

“Early?” I blatantly asked.

“Sorry?” He raised an eyebrow at me.

“You said you’d be there in a week, and you usually keep your word. You went back early.”

“So?” He snorted. “They were already prepared. They’re those kind of people.” He sighed, shaking his head. “Turns out, that sick girl didn’t make it.”

“Maggie?” I asked innocently.

“I guess,” he shrugged. “Couldn’t take the stress, and she just keeled over.”

“How awful,” I trailed off. I knew the truth, but I did not want him to find out.

“Tomorrow’s a scavenging day. Are you gonna lead the evening group?” He asked, quickly changing the subject.

“Me? I thought Dwight was your main pick for the scavenging.”

“Awh, Dwight can’t find shit whenever he goes on a run. You on the other hand? You get the mother-load!” He smacked my shoulder in praise. "Makes me proud to be your old man. I knew I saw somethin’ in you when I found you.“

"Thanks dad,” I said gratefully, smiling up at him.

“You’re the best, sweetheart,” he winked, ruffling my hair. “I’ll leave you to whatever you were doin’. Just be ready to go tomorrow evening. Oh, and don’t tell Dwight what I said, okay?”

“It’ll be our little secret,” I agreed, playing along.

"You make me proud, kid.” With a final award-winning smile, he shut the door. I quickly gathered what I needed to go back to Alexandria, and made my way back without being seen.

“Rick?” I called, entering his house. I stopped and looked around, noticing how empty it was. It was almost as if they had just moved in. “Rick, are you here?”

“In here,” he called from his room. I walked through the halls and to his room to find him on the floor setting out blankets like a pallet. He headboard was still in place, but the mattress was gone. “They took our mattresses.”
“I can see that,” I acknowledged, looking apologetically down at him. “What else did they take?”

His focus remained on making the pallet. “Half of our medical supplies, and all of our guns.”

All of them?!” I raged. My nostrils flared in anger. “He promised he’d only take half!”

“(Y/n), it’s fine,” Rick insisted, shaking his head.

“Rick, it isn’t fine! That’s unfair! He’s a man of his word!”

“Carl threatened him and his men with a pistol,” he calmly explained, “so he took our guns and ammo away.”

“He doesn’t do that!” I argued, pacing around the room. “You know what? I’ll make him promise! Yeah! I’ll go back there and make him keep to his word!” Tears pricked my eyes as Rick stood up and made his way toward me. I turned my back to him, continuing to rant. “After all, I am his daughter. He’ll listen to me! He wouldn’t go back on his word if I were involved!”

“(Y/n),” Rick sternly grabbed my shoulders and spun me around to face him. I leaned back a bit so I could look straight into his eyes. “You can’t. He’ll figure it out somehow, and we’ll be in far more danger than before.” A sob escaped my lips as I buried my head in his shoulder.

“I’m sorry, Rick,” I bawled. “I’m so, so sorry. You people don’t deserve to live like this. It’s unfair!”

“It may be, but you know what?” He gently grabbed my chin, looking me dead in the eyes. “We’ll survive. We’ve made it this far, and we’re not giving up now.”

“I still wanna help,” I offered with a watery smile. “I can brings few things for you guys whenever you need them.”

“Of course,” he agreed, nodding his head. “But we can get through this, all right?”

“I know you can.” He pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead, then dipped down to capture my lips with his. I ran my fingers through his curly locks as he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer. After a while, we pulled away and pressed out foreheads together. “Tell me what I need I do,” I whispered.

“Stay with me tonight,” he softly answered. “It’ll be our little secret.”

I quietly giggled, pecking his nose. “Okay.”

I do love my dad, but sometimes he takes things a little too far. With the Alexandrians, he’s definitely gone overboard. It hurt my heart to think that my own people–whom I don’t wish to claim at this point–would hurt these people that have come into my life and that I have ended up loving and caring for dearly. Without another word, Rick and I got under the blankets. His strong arms wrapped around my waist, and his nose pressed against the back of my neck. It didn’t take long before we both drifted off to sleep.

RvB Headcanon:

Wash is so incredibly pale. He never takes his armour off unless he is at least 99% comfortable with his surroundings (he has never been 100% comfortable anywhere since Project Freelancer, and it’s usually in a locked and heavily guarded room or bathroom/shower space). He eats with his helmet on and sleeps (when he can) fully armoured up and ready for anything that comes his way. He’s so paranoid about someone showing up out of nowhere, guns blazing, and taking out his troops that he is never seen without it.

He hasn’t felt the sun on his face in years. He’s so pale, the Casper ghost jokes aren’t even funny anymore. The first time any of the others (excluding Carolina and Epsilon) see his face is when his helmet is smashed and fragments of his visor need to be extracted from his face by Dr. Grey. They are all silenced by his appearance and Caboose starts getting uncomfortable.

When Grey starts talking to Wash about his vitamin deficiencies, she thinks they are alone. Caboose is waiting outside for Wash because he’s so scared that Wash is sick because he’s what other sick people look like. He’s had lots of sick people in his life that never got better. So when he hears through the paper-thin door about Wash needing to take special medicine (vitamins) to make him feel better, Caboose makes sure to tell his best friend Church and his other friend Tucker so they can help Wash get better too. They are a team, and they need to help their leader friend not be sick anymore.

Cue to Caboose following Wash around every day with a little plastic cup full of “happy Wash medicine” and a glass of water because Caboose cant lose anyone else.

Tucker just gives him a look and they have a silent conversation about it, ending with Wash sighing and taking the pills that Caboose provides.

And Epsilon/Church rigs up a full-body scanner just to check Wash’s blood contents from a distance to see if he took his meds today. When he doesn’t, he sicks Caboose on him and it all repeats until Epsilon is satisfied and Wash is okay for the day.
