NOISEY ATLANTA: RICH GANG: SOMETIMES YOU WIN, SOMETIMES YOU LOSE - EPISODE 8

In episode eight of Noisey Atlanta, we examine just how quickly the ups and downs can happen in the trap world. In short, the scene moves fast. To start things off, we meet Bankroll Fresh at a barbershop and talk about the rise of his late summer 2014 hit “Hot Boy.” Then we find ourselves in the studio with the elusive Young Thug before linking with Rich Homie Quan, who tells stories of getting out of jail and eventually forming Rich Gang with Birdman and Thugger (fun fact: RHQ and Young Thug apparently went to middle school together). Later, we catch up with Trinidad Jame$ over a year after the explosion of “All Gold Everything,” showing what can possibly happen to a hyped up rapper after the machine spits ‘em out.

One time I hurriedly messaged someone on a dating site because their profile said “Don’t believe me? Just watch” and my heart leapt because in my twisted mind I figured they were referencing this Nell Carter performance of this Steve Winwood song. She dedicates it to her late brother and right at the song’s climax the band cuts out and she stage whispers, “I love you brother. You don’t believe me? Just watch.” Then the strings come back in.

The person I was messaging was of course referencing the Trinidad James song, “All Gold Everything" and appropriately treated me like a crazy person.  Any 20something sane person would have gone there in their brain. My brain instead chose to imagine a shared moment of connection with a stranger over a bit of cultural ephemera that’s wrapped itself around my identity. Anyway here’s another time this year when I’ll post this Nell Carter video, everyone!
