Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana, aka Half Bound Lotus Standing Forward Bend, is most commonly practiced during Ashtanga Primary Series. This pose packs tons of benefits including opening the chest and shoulders, as well as the hips and hamstrings while lengthening the spine, toning the abs and strengthening the legs. Therefore we’ll be giving it a go in my 7pm Vinyasa class @karenlordpilates tonight. Get ready to open, lengthen and strengthen away any lingering Monday blues and start your week with a smile. ☺️

Half Bound Triangle is one of my favorite poses and I include it in almost all of my classes as it seems to open the body in all of the right places. As Triangle Pose does, it opens the hamstrings and hips, as well as strengthens the abs. By adding the half bind, the chest and shoulders get a deep stretch that feels heavenly, the more you lean back while pressing into your hip crease, the nicer the stretch. Utthita Parsvakonasana, aka Extended Side Angle Pose, has been a recent favorite of mine. This pose is a fantastic leg strengthener, although I love it for the amazing side waist, lower back and hip opening. Extended Side Angle is also a chest and shoulder opener as well as helpful for sciatica. Come explore this pose and many others with me tonight in my 7pm Vinyasa class @karenlordpilates. Dolphin Pose, aka Forearm Downdog, is amazing shoulder and chest opener. This pose also opens the hamstrings, strengthens the forearms and relaxes the mind. Walking the feet in towards the arms and holding up one leg in downdog split is great prep for Forearm Stand. We will be exploring this pose and more in my classes today and this weekend. As tough as it may be, Plank Pose is unbeatable when it comes to strengthening benefits. Not only does this pose strengthen the arms and wrists, it also seriously tones the abs, back and spine. Kicking out through the heels opens the calves and engages the legs to strengthen the quads. Whenever I have a student who is having trouble mastering their Chaturanga, I recommend holding plank for at least a minute a day to help strengthen and thus achieve their goal. Backbends are extremely beneficial in our modern day lives. Sitting at a desk tends to make one hunch over, tightening the hips and chest and encouraging bad posture. Backbends like Cobra (shown above) counter act the daily hours spent at a desk by opening the chest, shoulders and psoas, lengthening the spine and strengthening the back muscles. Downward Dog always feels like an amazing reset to my body every time I enter it. Lengthening the spine, opening the chest, stretching the hamstrings and calves, awakening the core, there’s nothing that I don’t love about this pose.
