A Crooked Way to Fly (15k)

“We can’t just leave him here to die.”

“He’s an emissary, Scott.” Derek tried to make his tone empathetic, but Scott’s tendency to fight back on everything always grated on his nerves. “His pack is gone, he won’t survive more than a day or two either way.”

“Then we should stay with him.”

Derek sighed as he studied the man for a moment; he was too pale against the fur rim of his hood, almost grey from lying out in the snow, and his cloak was stained with dark dried blood around a protruding arrow shaft. It was unlikely he would even last the night. They would probably be able to carry on in the morning with little time lost, if any.

It wasn’t a horrible idea, Derek decided reluctantly. They hadn’t been able to set up a real camp for a few weeks in the open foothills, and they were all on edge from sleeping in exposed areas. A defensible place to sleep would be good for them, even if they were surrounded by death. They would be able to give the pack proper burials, at the very least.

“Fine. One night,” Derek relented, already moving away to check on Isaac. “He’s your responsibility.”

KAYAPO COURAGE: “The Amazon tribe has beaten back ranchers and gold miners and famously stopped a dam. Now its leaders must fight again or risk losing a way of life.” ~ Chip Brown.  photography by Martin Schoeller - full story & gallery via National Geographic (January 2014)

  • “YNHIRE expresses his identity as a warrior with a headdress of parrot feathers.”

  • “PHNH-OTI has an inverted V shaved into her scalp, a ceremonial female practice.”
  • “BEPRAN-TI wears an impressive display of feathers for his betrothal ceremony, a Kayapo rite of passage.”

There was one of Alfred too but since my tablet died I can’t finish it just yet.. oops.

Some info:
The blue markings (or grey if you look at the first pic) are tribal ‘tattoo’s’ which are pretty much just painted on?? uwu
Feathers also seemed to be a common accessory back then. I use feathers in a way of showing one’s importance in the tribe. Since Arthur is the son of the chief, his feathers are more colourful and larger than that of any other tribe member (usually brown/pale and smol).

The Asháninka or Asháninca (also known by the exonym “Campa” or “Kampa”, which is considered derogatory) are an indigenous people living in the rainforests of Peru and in the State of Acre Brazil.

The Asháninka (their name means: our kinsmen) are estimated between 25,000 and 45,000. Only a few hundred of these live on the Brazilian side of the border. That means that among the 300,000 native people from 65 different ethnic groups in the Peruvian Amazon, the Asháninka are the second largest indigenous group, the Quechua being the largest.

Ashaninka Indians apply face-paint each day, in a design that reflects their mood. Made from the seeds of the Urucum plant, the paint has a rich, red color. Men take just as much care of their appearance as women.

Opinion | What if Western media covered Charlottesville the same way it covers other nations
The world shakes its head at America.

This is not overly long, but it is entirely accurate.

It shows the way this would be written if it was the American press describing a similar event in Turkey or South Africa. It will make you uncomfortable, because it’s right.
