Fandometrics In Depth: Riverdale Edition

On January 26th, 2017, The CW (@cwnetwork) gave us the gift of Riverdale, the gritty Archie Comics (@archiecomics) reboot we had no idea we wanted. For 15 weeks, we’ve witnessed our newest faves write for the Blue and Gold, watch the River Vixens perform, and grab milkshakes at Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe. To help you recover from last night’s fiery finale, we analyzed millions of tags used between January 26th and May 11th, 2017 to identify the most talked about characters, episodes, and ships.

With nearly 15 million engagements (searches, original posts, reblogs and likes) during the first season run, Riverdale was the 44th most trending tag on all of Tumblr: that’s more popular than the tags #Harry Styles, #Star Wars and #Pokemon, to name a few. Among TV shows, Riverdale was the fourth most trending program, right behind Voltron: Legendary Defender, Steven Universe and Skam.

But what were the top performing episodes of Riverdale? Glad you asked:

Top Characters

Jughead Jones, played by perennial Tumblr fave Cole Sprouse, was the most talked about character. In fact, 28.8% of the conversation was focused on our behatted narrator. The full list breaks down as follows:

  1. Jughead Jones | 28.80%
  2. Betty Cooper | 20.70%
  3. Veronica Lodge | 16.11%
  4. Archie Andrews | 12.62%
  5. Cheryl Blossom | 7.35%
  6. Kevin Keller | 4.53%
  7. Reggie Mantle | 2.79%
  8. Jason Blossom | 1.43%
  9. Josie McCoy | 1.38%
  10. Alice Cooper | 1.15%

It was a big 15 weeks for Jughead. In addition to being the most discussed character, he was one half of the most popular ship: #Bughead. This canon relationship between Jughead and Betty dominated the show’s ship conversation, accounting for more than half that discussion. Even though Chip Zdarsky’s (@zdarsky) Jughead is canonically asexual, Riverdale’s Jughead is still trying to navigate the fluidity of his sexuality through this relationship.

  1. Bughead (Betty x Jughead) | 51.17%
  2. Beronica (Betty x Veronica) | 32.37%
  3. Jarchie  (Jughead x Archie) |  8.63%
  4. ArchieRonnie (Archie x Veronica) | 3.11%
  5. Barchie (Betty x Archie) | 2.84%
  6. Cheronica (Cheryl x Veronica) | 1.70%
  7. Valarchie (Valerie x Archie) | 0.18%

Riverdale was renewed for a season two before the first season even ended. For amazing GIFs to tide you over until next fall, may we suggest:

Watch The Bold Type tonight (Tuesday, August 15th) at 9PM EST on Freeform. DVR (and watch/rewatch), Watch the next day on Hulu and Freeform’s site and phone app. This show needs a viewer boost and all this helps if we hope for a season 2 renewal.

Help trend #TheBoldType and tweet with the cast using #TheBoldTypeChat during the episode as well, if you are able. There are only 3 episodes left in the season and it would be great to show Freeform and this hard working cast our continued social media support as well.

In honor of the incredible witch we have gotten to love for the past 8 years I thought to say thank you, we should trend on Twitter. So, if you are a fan of Bonnie Sheila Bennett then it would be amazing if you could participate to thank the amazing Kat Graham for portraying our judgmental badass witch.

We will be trending Friday March 10th 7pm EST, 9pm Brazil, March 11th in the UK 12am and 11am AEDT. The hashtag will be #ThankYouBonBon and we will be trending for roughly 2 hours as well as throughout the final episode.

I ask you to join, no matter if you ship Bonnie with Damon, Enzo, Kai, Nora or whoever! This is a time to appreciate Bonnie, so go on your twitter and trend with us or make a twitter account just for the sake of trending with us. Share your favourite Bonnie moments and talk endlessly about how amazing she is. This is the final time to do something like this and I would love for as many fans to participate as possible.

And thank you to Nisha (@bonneibennett) for making the beautiful banner above!

Okay, I have no idea if this has been done before so please forgive me if it has.

As everyone knows Still Star-Crossed has been struggling with ratings and is in danger of not being renewed for a second season. So lets have a trending party on twitter which will let it known how much this show is already loved and that we want a second season.

Let’s trend on Monday the 19th “StillStarCrossedSeason2″

The tweets might be counted as spam if only it includes the hashtag and random letters and numbers. So the best way to trend is to have sentences or words included in the tweet! If the phrase or sentence is repeated however it will only be counted as one so shake it up with each tweet! Also retweets don’t count in adding numbers to the trends.

Don’t forget to mention writers, producers, actors, and networks in tweets so that they can catch on! Here are some of their twitter handles:

@shondarhimes
@ABCNetwork
@ABCStudios
@StarCrossedABC
@ShondalandTV
@MelindaTaub
@LashanaLynch
@TheSterlingEnd
@EboneeReigne
@torrancecoombs
@medalionR
@GrantBowler
@AnthonySHead

Remember if you tweet these people some of them may even get involved in our trend! Ive seen actors help out before!

We will be having this trending party start before the show airs! After we also will be live tweeting during the whole new episode and telling our reactions and saying what we like about the show and want more of! (Don’t forget to use #StillStarCrossed and tagging ships and such!)

So let’s come together and show our support for this show! Lets work to get a season two!

(if you need more information contact me or @mindykahling)

ok people, listen up. freeform still hasn’t announced the renewal of three of their shows and shadowhunters is one of them. i don’t know what is taking so long considering the fact shadowhunters is one of their more successful shows but freeform is random like that, they will cancel the show even if it’s doing great. last year, we trended that we want shadowhunters season 2 so i can’t see why we can’t do the same this year. we need to act and show that we do actually want a season 3!

edit: tag your tweet with #ShadowhuntersSeason3 !!

I feel like it’s now my duty to post weekly updates on the ratings for Wynonna Earp. A couple of thousand less than last week, but luckily nothing under 500,000.

I heard a rumour that Syfy wasn’t prioritising viewership in regards to shows. Its a contributing factor, of course, but they were heavily influenced by a fandom rather than focusing only on viewership. So if we keep the figures over 500,000 but make Wynonna Earp trend every week, we could be getting a season 4. I think there’s too much shite on tv these days to expect millions of people (especially on a Friday night) to watch a show on cable. So Syfy would prefer a fandom reaction.

So guys, your mission, should you accept it, is to make Wynonna Earp, Wayhaught, WynDolls, Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Kat Barrell or anything related to the show trend every Friday! Don’t worry if you think you’re annoying people with what you’re saying because you’re not. You guys are the funniest fuckers I’ve ever had the privilege to meet and your tweets on a Friday absolutely kills me.

Let’s go, Earpers! Best fandom ever. I love you all.

What did you think of the final confrontation between Zuko and Azula? I think Azula embodies the dark path Zuko could have easily taken in the face of his personal and moral struggles if it weren't for his uncle, his mother and obviously himself in the end. It'd have been powerful to have him defeat her, thematically speaking. Why did they have Katara defeat her? What did that accomplish? Many criticize the Aang/Ozai's deus ex machina solution, but this one was even more disappointing to me.

The showrunners made that decision because defeating Ozai and Azula is a dramatic formality - what matters to character development is that Zuko defeats what is worst in himself. (The other protagonists, too.) And I love it.

The key to the character development decisions in the finale is found in the season two episode “Bitter Work.” That episode shows Aang struggling with the philosophy of earthbending, having difficulty standing his ground against a falling boulder. It also shows us Zuko, motivated by his rivalry with Azula, say “screw basics, I want lightning!” In the end of that episode, Aang gets enough of a grip on earthbending to at least use it, while Zuko learns how to redirect lightning.

In the finale, Aang shows his mastery of earthbending philosophy as he stands his ground against Ozai (so much worse than a rock), and Zuko decides to use his lightning redirection to save Katara, at the cost of a chance to definitively beat Azula into the ground.

But the other thing is, by the time Azula takes that cheap shot at Katara, it’s clear Zuko’s already won everything that matters.

In terms of firebending, Zuko was having that fight all his own way. Go back to Zuko’s first fight against Zhao and listen to what Iroh tells him - then look at Zuko’s footwork in the finale. His feet aren’t going anywhere but where he wants them to go. Also his breathing, the source of firebending. Zuko’s breathing is controlled; Azula’s chest is heaving. Even with the massive power boost the comet’s giving both of them, it’s more than possible to tell that Zuko’s firebending is neat and precise, and his defence is now solid as a rock. This is a trend that’s manifestly apparent through the last quarter of season three. The gap in the fight occurs because Azula’s worked out that Zuko’s winning, and she needs to change her tactics.

Then there’s the fact that Zuko has someone to jump in front of at all. In Katara, he has a friend so steadfast she’s come along to the middle of enemy territory on the day firebenders are most powerful to back him up in his fight. Meanwhile, though Azula tried to compel that sort of loyalty from Mai and Ty Lee, she couldn’t. Mai chose Zuko over Azula, and Ty Lee chose Mai over Azula. She’s alone, but Zuko has friends and family. She’s devastated by Ozai turning his back on her, but Zuko’s past it.

Zuko’s never been better off, and Azula never lower. He’s got nothing more to prove - not to himself, not to Ozai, and not to Azula. It’s not relevant which of Zuko or Katara strikes that final blow, and boy does that go to the heart of Azula’s own insecurities.

Third thing. Zuko saves Katara with a firebending move drawn from the principles of waterbending. Katara finally defeats Azula by freezing them both in a big block of ice and then breathing out water to free herself. Which bending discipline is based on the breath, again? Firebending. Katara defeated Azula with a waterbending move drawn from the principles of firebending.

Instead of Zuko giving it all to definitely absolutely positively defeat Azula personally and win a fight that, as I say, he’s already won, the writers preferred to show Zuko prioritising Katara’s life over his own family drama, and how both he and Katara have learned from each other.
