Pedal Roundup

It dawned on me the other day that I’ve been collecting effect pedals for the better part of 5 years and I have a nice little collection stored up.  What always drew me to pedals was how far the boutique industry has come in creating high quality effects than can strengthen any tonal palate for any style of playing.  After all these years these are the 5 boards that I have put together and each have their strength in any specific style or application.

Pedal Board A ‘Monolith - The true behemoth of my collection and is as expansive in scope as it is gratuitous in size.  Most of my all time favorite pedals of any ilk are on this board and It could be used in just about any style I would play.  It’s size is a little inhibiting so it doesn’t see the stage unless it is an equally large affair.

Tonal Style: Anything and Everything.

  • Origin Effects Cali76 TX-LP limiting Amplifier
  • Sonic Research ST-200 Turbo Tuner
  • TWA The Great Divide 2.0 Synthesizer
  • TWA Little Dipper 2.0 Envelope Filter
  • Fuzzrocious Custom Demon King Overdrive
  • Dunwich Amps Wizard Fuzz
  • Moog MF-104M Super Delay Moogerfooger
  • Iron Ether Nimbus Bass Reverb
  • TC Electronics Ditto Looper
  • Cioks DC10 Power Supply
  • Brady Cases Custom Pedal Board and Road Case

Pedal Board B ‘Minilith - I loved the tonal palate that I had with ‘Monolith’  but once again I found it’s size rather inhibiting.  This board was conceived because  I wanted to get that tonal range without the bulk, hence the ‘Minilith.’  Everything is a smaller version of what’s on the larger board, minus a reverb and looper.  I would consider this my main board.

Tonal Style: From different veins of Metal and Rock, to Prog and 70′s Pop.

  • Cali76-CB Limiting Amplifier
  • Sonic Research ST-200 Turbo Tuner
  • Iron Ether Subterranea Synthesizer
  • Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe Envelope Filter
  • Mountainking Electronics Behemoth II Overdrive
  • Dwarfcrafter Custom Eau Claire Thunder Fuzz
  • Moog MF Delay Minifooger
  • VooDoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus

Pedal Board C ‘Stoner Doom- While the first two boards have a sense of high fidelity and are sleek in their range, ‘Stoner Doom’ is meant to be dirty and weird.  Rather than starting with high quality compression, this board starts with the dirty traynor preamp clone , Rusty Box.  The other big difference is that this board has the No Memory digital delay that gets supper glitchy and weird with it’s modulation, a stark contrast from the musical and rich Moog analog delays.

Tonal Style: Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych, Doom Metal

  • Tronographic Rusty Box Preamp
  • Sonic Research ST-200 Turbo Tuner
  • Dunlop Bass Wah
  • Dunwich Amps Volt Thrower Distortion
  • Lonewolf Audio Iron Fist Fuzz
  • Fuzzrocious Tremorslo (Tremolo)
  • Small Sound/Big Sound No Memory Digital Delay
  • Voo Doo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus

Pedal Board D ‘Death by Dark Mountain- The simplest of my boards but also made in the same vein as ‘Stoner Doom.’  The three effects on this board are some of the largest in my collection and the way they sound made this board come together naturally.  Between the Darkglass preamp, the Two OD’s and Fuzz this one has a great cascading dirt setup.  It all ends in the Ghost delay which is three separate delays that all cascade into one another.

Tonal Style: Drone Metal and Atmospheric Metal.

  • Darkglass B7K Preamp
  • Sonic Research ST-200 Turbo Tuner
  • Small Sound/Big Sound Fuck Mountain Dual Overdrive
  • Mountain King Electronics Megalith Fuzz
  • Death by Audio Ghost Delay
  • Cioks DC5 Power Supply

Pedal Board E ’Shoegaze’ - Built upon the bones of my first pedal board, ‘Shoegaze’ is my smallest and most portable board.  It fits perfectly in my Gigbag along with my Genz-Benz micro head which makes me the king of the one-trip load in when I need to be light on my feet.  The bright colors always make me chuckle when compared to my other serious boards.  Don’t let it’s small size and comical colors fool you though, this one is serious in the tone department.

Tonal Style: Shoegaze, Punk, Experimental Rock, I even played most of these pedals in a Surf Rock/Mariachi Rock group.

  • Effectrode PC-2A Limiting Amplifier
  • Sonic Research ST-200 Turbo Tuner
  • DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 w/ AnalogMan Mojo Mod
  • Fuzzrocious Custom Grey Stache Fuzz
  • Endagered Audio Research AD4096 Analog Delay/Reverb
  • Zvexx Mastotron Fuzz
  • VooDoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus

I still have some other pedals that aren’t on any of these boards.  My plan is to ultimately have seven boards because that just seems like a nice number and would give me any possible tonal variation I would ever hope to need.  The two that are in the works are ‘Space Doom’ which will be comprised mainly of Spaceman Effects (who I am a huge fan of), and ‘The Horror’ which will be comprised of mostly Dunwich Amps creations (which I am equally a big fan of). Thanks for tuning in.
