trek fuel

i really appreciate whoever was responsible for costumes in ds9′s “a time to stand” because not only did they randomly decide this was going to be the one (1) single time we’d get to see julian with an open uniform collar cheekily flashing some collarbone but they also chose to use this one (1) precious moment for a scene were julian and garak were completely alone in a room and very obviously flirting

Orbigo to El Ganzo

What a wonderful day! The temp was in the high 70’s and we believe up to low 80’s. We walked out of Villares de Orbigo and a quick 14 km to Astorga. What a fun town! Little side streets and alleyways. We went into a wonderful church and heard the priest sing part of the mass. I love the sounds in such a big space. We also found a church in Villaverde with 2 women singing and saying a mass alone. Beautiful both times. We then found the cathedral in Astorga and walked through. It is colossal in size and gold hoards! Very fun. The choir was so ornate in the carved seats. After church we had a nice lunch of sandwiches. Kea’s was the size of her head, perhaps a bit bigger! We were fueled to trek on.
It was a long hot slog through the next few towns. Our packs got heavier, our feet sorer and conversation sparser. We stopped a number of times for cool drinks and a break. We saw a woman who was also tired in Santa Catalina and invited her to walk with us. She said she would leave a few minutes later and catch up. Yes, we were slow, but she didn’t catch up. It might have been because Kea told her we were discussing Judy Dench. Finally we arrived in the tiny town of El Ganzo. We got an apartment. I call this my luxury Camino as we’ve gotten private rooms and baths more than group bunks. Tonight it’s a whole apartment!! WWRD!!
Instead of the pilgrim dinner which was a whopping 12€ (they are usually 9-10) we walked a few blocks back to a cowboy bar! Yes, you heard right. No cowboys but it had lots of vaquero paraphernalia. We grabbed a glass of wine and sat outside. Who should we see as we stepped out, but the woman we left in the dust in Santa Catalina! She invited us to join them. We had a fun night of laughing and eating with 2 woman from the Boston area regaling us with Camino experiences, Katherine from New York who we saw earlier, a man who was very happy and talkative from Nothern England, tho his leg was wrapped for shin splints. We also had Cid from London and Lucas from Germany. I felt free to chat and laugh and talk about politics and how we were feeling and listen to stories until I realized that Lucas was feeling like I felt many nights, he understood most of the English words but couldn’t keep up with the speed of the language. His English sounded so good I thought he was fluent but he struggled to keep up. Just like I felt most days with Spanish, only I am not nearly as good as he was in English. I am hoping we run into that fun group again and again.

Off to get coffee and prepare for my day. I am hoping to climb that mountain today with ease! Today will be our toughest in terms of elevation gain, but we are strong! Do I sound confident?? I’ll let you know how we do.

THE WOMEN OF AMERICA, HOWEVER

HERE’S A FACT IN ALL CAPS! A GREAT DEAL OF STAR TREK’S POPULARITY WHILE IT WAS ON THE AIR WAS DUE TO MR. SPOCK’S SEX APPEAL, ESPECIALLY AMONG THOSE FANS WHO HAPPENED TO BE WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO WERE ATTRACTED TO MEN.

IN FACT, MANY OF THESE FANS ENJOYED THE SHOW LARGELY BECAUSE IT GAVE THEM AN OUTLET TO FANTASIZE ABOUT MR. SPOCK WITHOUT ATTRACTING SUSPICION.

THEY ALSO ENJOYED THE SHOW BECAUSE IT WAS A GOOD SHOW, BUT GIVEN THE STIGMA AGAINST YOUNG WOMEN EXPLORING THEIR SEXUALITY, MR. SPOCK’S UNDERSTATED SEX APPEAL ATTRACTED A LARGE, DEVOTED FANBASE THAT FUELED THE FRANCHISE LONG AFTER THE SERIES WAS CANCELLED.

THE TRUTH IS THAT THE ENDURING POPULARITY OF STAR TREK WAS LARGELY FUELED BY WOMEN AND TEENAGE GIRLS WHO WERE FANS OF THE SHOW, MANY OF WHOM WERE ATTRACTED TO THE PROTAGONISTS, ESPECIALLY SPOCK.

THEY WERE THE ONES LARGELY GENERATING AND CONSUMING THE FANWORKS AT THE CONVENTIONS, AND THEY WERE THE ONES WHO KEPT STAR TREK IN THE PUBLIC CONSCIOUSNESS UNTIL IT WAS CLEAR THAT IT WAS STILL A PROFITABLE VENTURE, LEADING TO THE CREATION OF A FILM FRANCHISE AND SEVERAL NEW SERIES.

SO THE NEXT TIME PEOPLE ARE CRITICIZING TEENAGE GIRLS WHO “ONLY STARTED WATCHING THE SHOW BECAUSE THE MAIN CHARACTERS ARE HOT,” THEY SHOULD REMEMBER THAT WE WOULDN’T HAVE 50 YEARS OF STAR TREK IF NOT FOR TEENAGE GIRLS WHOSE INITIAL INTEREST WAS SPARKED BY THEIR ATTRACTION TO THE MAIN CHARACTERS

THE POST-SCRIPT HERE IS THAT YOU USED THE PHRASE “THE WOMEN OF AMERICA” TO DESCRIBE A GROUP THAT YOU HAVE TOLD ME INCLUDES YOU BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT YOU ARE CANADIAN. I ASSUME YOU MEAN NORTH AMERICA?
