An auger is an indispensable tool for bushcraft (though often undervalued) that is fairly light and doesn’t take up much space. It is a tool used to bore holes in wood or earth or ice. Battery powered drills don’t always meet expectations for deep cuts, and they are heavy and noisy. You can usually find augers at antique shops or online. I like the vintage hand turned augers. You can find Scotch Eyed Augers with nice belt sheaths online or make your own - you would just add a stick through the auger eye when you’re ready to use it. Without an auger, some outdoor projects would be much more difficult, such as building a strong log cabin, making furniture, tapping trees for sap, making a Chevaux-de-Frise fortified camp perimeter, etc. A primitive pump drill would be your next best option, but not as effective.
