CONNORxEVAN HEADCANNONS MY FRIEND (LOVE U)

FRIEND. TREE  BROS ARE MY SHIT. I’M PLANNING A SERIES AROUND THEM.

TREE BROS HCS:

  • Connor and Evan are both problematic so most of their dates involve being away from the public eye, little secret getaways
  • They get rained down during of their getaway dates and Connor offers Evan his hoodie. Because how cute is Evan in Connor’s hoodie?
  • Evan likes to play with Connor’s hair while Connor is laying on his lap, sketching something.
  • The actually have a favorite band in common and its (idk pine grove, its a group that gets me in the mood to write for tree bros/connor)
  • Connor tutors Evan in English and feeds him between sessions
  • when Connor cooks he leaves leftovers for Mrs. Hansen, she smirks because thats how she knows Connor has been around
  • Connor still writes on Evan’s arm even after his cast is taken off. He doodles and leaves notes. Whenever Evan gets anxious or worried, he can look at them and it gives him peace of mind. He’ll see connor again soon
  • CONNOR AND EVAN DO NOT CURE EACH OTHER BUT THEY HELP EACH OTHER COPE WITH THEIR PROBLEMS AND COME TO TERMS WITH THE FACT THEY HAVE THESE THINGS BUT THAT DOESN’T MAKE THEM ANY LESS WORTHY OF LOVE AND HAPPINESS *WAILS*
It’s messing people up, this social pressure to “find your passion” and “know what it is you want to do”. It’s perfectly fine to just live your moments fully, and marvel as many small and large passions, many small and large purposes enter and leave your life. For many people there is no realization, no bliss to follow, no discovery of your life’s purpose. This isn’t sad, it’s just the way things are. Stop trying to find the forest and just enjoy the trees.

I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn’t quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.

Why I love the DEH plot

•first of all it really highlights the importance and the reality of mental illness/anxiety in the world nowadays. Like just the way Evan’s character is portrayed where it actually SEEMS like he feels awkward and out of place; avoiding direct eye contact, stuttering, being really closed in on himself like he feels exposed. Honestly Ben Platt portrays Evan so well it’s kind of scary.

•Also it doesn’t reveal much about Connor and that’s realistic because his depression and anxiety keep him from properly connecting with people; therefore he feels closed off from the world and lashes out in anger when it seems like someone is breaking past his comfort zone. He probably felt like he was constantly being targeted and has nobody to open up to because his family didn’t know how to help him and he didn’t have any friends. Anxiety can really cause you to get paranoid and insecure at times which really shuts you off from other people. I feel like this is so IMPORTANT because it allows the audience to see what it’s like when you have anxiety and are talking to yourself about difficult decisions (like when Evan would constantly debate with “connor” about telling the Murphys the truth. I honestly believe that ghost Connor is a symbol of Evans anxiety)

•the plot line is extremely realistic in the fact that it has no “grand ending”. We are so used to the ends of stories tying everything together so it makes sense. But, the fact of life is that it isn’t perfect. Evan Hansen was a teenager that told a huge lie because of his crippling anxiety. Connor Murphy was introduced as a kid who was mentally ill and misunderstood. I know that when I first watched the musical I thought that Connor would maybe become friends with Evan when he signed his cast and things would turn upward in the story like they regularly do. However, Dear Evan Hansen was incredibly different then I had imagined. Connor Murphy committed suicide in the first act and I started to wonder when the plot would get “happier”. It never did and I am so glad that it didn’t. I don’t think this story was particularly joyful and perfect but the fact that it isn’t perfect is what makes it so impacting. The musical ends with Evan all alone again, and even when he spoke to Zoe after all that time there was still this remaining awkwardness that would never go away. This really shows how our decisions affect our lives forever, and how amazing it is that Evan finally accepted himself for who he was in the end.

Overall, I love this show and story so much because it really shows that the only thing you can control when life hits you really hard is your perspective.

I tramonti.
