adrien is the son of the village chief, gabriel agreste, who is always busy taking care of the dragon attackss that occur to spend time with his son. their conversations are quite awkward and their relationship strained since gabriel is so overprotective.
gabriel lost his wife to a dragon attack when adrien was just a baby, so he keeps adrien from participating with the village teens in helping put out fires during the dragon raids
adrien is stuck forging weapons for other Vikings to use, or sheltered in his home, wishing he could be with the other teens.
he thinks marinette is the most beautiful girl, strong and brave and always helping in any way she can. he’ll try to talk to her when he’s filing her axe when she asks but he can never spit any words out.
nino is a guy who is very cool to him, but gabriel has banned him from being near adrien since he once snuck adrien out of the house for his birthday.
adrien likes to make and invent different contraptions to trap dragons with. he wants to prove to his dad that he can be a good Viking and fend for himself, hoping that it’ll make him proud and that he will gain some freedom for it.
on the night that he shoots down a dragon, no one believes him or wants to follow him to where the downed dragon supposedly is.
adrien doesn’t give up; he sneaks off and is shocked to discover he has shot down a night fury, the deadliest dragon that’s ever lived, thought to be extinct.
adrien wants to kill the dragon, but as he looks into his eyes, he can’t go through with it. he lets him free, the dragon pins him and roars in his face, and flies away.
after that encounter, adrien is thrown off ever wanting to kill dragons. sadly, gabriel finally relents, after getting advice from the Gorilla, who is a long life friend who oversees adrien in the forge and trains people how to fight dragons, and lets him train how to kill dragons with the other teens.
adrien is less than thrilled, but he masks this fairly well. he gets along fairly well with the other teens (basically the entire class instead of just five in total), though he is very out of practice and the butt of many jokes because of it.
he takes the time to study the dragon manual, and though it advises him not to go near night furies, he goes looking for the dragon anyways.
he comes across the night fury and is guilty to see that his net cause damaged the dragon’s tail. he works on a prototype tail and presents it to the dragon, after having earned his trust a little.
the dragon is pleased but still has not fully warmed up to adrien, so he shakes him off and tries to fly away. he’s disappointed to see that the tail needs adrien to fly so he must stay with the boy.
adrien continues to modify the tail while growing closer to the dragon and naming him plagg. he is disgusted that he likes cheese as much as he does but brings him some everyday anyways.
plagg is cat-like in most of his mannerism, all the way to how much time it took plagg to warm up to adrien and how territorial he became when he decided adrien was his person.
marinette and adrien have grown closer over the course of him being in the dragon class, blushing and stuttering and falling over each other. she was determined to distance herself from him after she realized this tiny crush she had was messing her up from being a good fighter and protector.
marinette takes defending the town very seriously and she is the best in the class.
she’s shocked when she sees adrien beating her in all the dragon excercies. knocking dragon’s down in the blink of an eye, no weapons in sight. she admits she’s a little jealous she’s been topped but she’s more suspicious, since he was a beginner and pretty bad at first.
she follows him after he is chosen to slay a dragon and jumps to protect him when she sees him in front of a dragon. adrien stops her and introduces her to plagg.
marinette cannot believe this and plagg is hissing and doesn’t like marinette, thinking she wanted to hurt him and take adrien away.
adrien offers marinette a ride, to get her to understand that dragons are not evil, and marinette very stubbornly refuses at first but relents when she sees how sincere adrien is in wanting to change her mind.
plagg goes wild until marinette apologizes for attacking him, and thus romantic flight commences. adrien and marinette come very close, her chin leaning on his shoulder, and adrien has never felt more at peace than with his two favorite people in the air.
marinette calls plagg amazing, and he assess her to be a good human.
plagg senses dragons, and takes adrien and marinette to the red death; the large dragon that all the other dragons have been raiding the village to scrounger for food to bring to her.
adrien asks marinette not to tell anyone about what she’s learned until he decides what to do that won’t endanger plagg. marinette, respecting that plagg means so much to him, keeps her word but advises him to be smart about how he’s going to go about this. that here is still the village to protect.
marinette punches adrien on the shoulder for the joyride, but kisses him on the cheek goodbye. adrien is moon-eyed and plagg is snickering.
the following day, marinette wishes adrien luck. unfortunately, adrien’s plan to show the Vikings that dragons are not the enemy goes awry when Gabriel, in fear of adrien’s life for getting so close to the dragon without armor or weapons, frightens the dragon.
plagg is able to hear adrien’s scream, and he scratches his way out of their hideout to protect adrien. he is ceased by the Vikings and adrien pleads his dad not to hurt him.
Big Confrontation: Gabriel is angry Adrien lied about how he beat all the other dragons and that he did something at treaturous as befriend a dragon after what happened with his mother. adrien understands his dad’s pain but he pleads that all dragons aren’t all bad, that plagg is his best friend and that he can’t let him die.
adrien accidentally lets out that plagg took him to the dragon’s den and Gabriel leaves him behind, disowning him for his betrayal, and takes plagg prisoner to lead him to the den.
adrien is heartbroken as he sees the ships sail away. marinette stands next to him, offering pushing words that makes adrien realize why plagg is so important, that they connected because they were both like outsiders (“when I looked at him I saw myself) and that he isn’t going to just let him get away if he means so much to him.
adrien and marinette convince the other teens to ride dragons to stop the adults from attacking the den. they distract the red death while adrien gets plagg out off his chains.
Gabriel, seeing that he was terribly wrong in thinking he could destroy the den, and seeing how fearless adrien is charging into battle, asks for his forgiveness after saving plagg from drowning.
adrien and plagg battle the red death. they are able to outsmart her and blow her up, but adrienis knocked off by her tail in the last moment. plagg rushes down to save adrien.
everyone thinks adrien is dead when they only see plagg crouched on the floor. Gabriel kneels down, crying as he apologizes to his son for not believing in him, for not being there for him like he should have.
plagg opens his eyes, and when he sees Gabriel’s teary eyes, opens his wings to reveal adrien tucked safely against him.
a few days later, adrien wakes up and is shocked to see plagg right by his side, in his room. he’s ever more shocked to see his right leg was burned off, like how plagg’s tail was disabled.
an even greaer shock: the dragons have moved into the village. adrien’s leadership having proven that dragons are not the enemy. adrien is happy to have his father’s approval and his best friend living in his village.
marinette makes her way to him after he’s done talking to his dad and plants a kiss in front of everyone on him. she had been devastated, thinking that adrien had died, and was glad he wasn’t.
end scene is adrien and marinette racing off together with their dragons, plagg and tikki.
