transparent society

it’s…..so funny…when celebrities say shit like ‘money can’t buy happiness’ while they’re sitting in mansions and never having to worry about putting food on the table, or when they say ‘looks don’t matter, everyone is beautiful’ while actively participating in a business/establishment that literally makes money off of people being insecure and hating themselves god it’s just so fucking transparent

It's not fair that we got (almost?) all Bum's back story: about his uncle and the girl he used to stalk in high school (I belive), but we know so little about Sangwoo's past!! 😫 I'm sure that if we knew something more about his past it would be easier to understand him 🤔 I hope that, like you said before in another ask, the next chapter will be about Sangwoo's past!

Yes, since we know so little about Sangwoo’s past, it makes it so much harder to fully understand him as a character.

I find it interesting that back when this fandom first started out there was almost a one sided view on Sangwoo and Bum, for some. Bum started off relevantly transparent: an outcast of society, afflicted with mental illness, and driven by a mixture of love and obsession. So knowing this, many labeled him as the obvious victim in the Manhwa. Then when Sangwoo came along, he was by all means the antagonist (which I don’t necessarily disagree with in a moral sense since he does kill people).

But if you look at the situation closely, Sangwoo and Bum both suffered from similar trauma’s that worsened their mental illness and antisocial tendencies. For Bum it obliterated his social skills and caused him to obsess over anyone he imprinted on. For Sangwoo it incited murder and manipulation among his peers. Different degrees of mental illness have caused their afflictions to manifest in different ways. Bum is only lucky that he didn’t turn out as messed up as Sangwoo.

It is extremely easy to make excuses for Bum since we know so much about his past. He was abused, mentally unwell, shunned and taunted by his peers. These are the reasons behind his misdeeds so…forgiven! But Sangwoo was always just the person that did evil things, simply because he was evil. For a kids show, this kind of villain would be acceptable. But with something as complex as Killing Stalking, the villain will typically have something in their past that drove them to become the person they turned out to be.

With that being said, hopefully a (possible) Sangwoo flashback in the future will help us decipher less obvious reasons for his heinous behavior and enable us to better understand him as a character. Not necessarily to make excuses for his actions, but to answer the question of “why”.

“The panopticon gaze is the idea of a silent, unknown overseer in the society such as the government that subconsciously controlled all aspects of life. It symbolizes extreme transparency within the society where the rulers or leaders can look down and know, being able to see exactly what is going on, influencing the actions of every individual.”

“Ballot is a mode of decision still more censurable than sortition [the act of drawing lots]. It is scarcely possible to conceive a political institution that includes a more direct and explicit patronage of vice. It has been said ‘that ballot may in certain cases be necessary to enable a man of a feeble character to act with ease and independence, and to prevent bribery, corrupt influence and faction’. Hypocrisy is an ill remedy to apply to the cure of weakness. A feeble and irresolute character might before be accidental; ballot is a contrivance to render it permanent, and to scatter its seeds over a wider surface. The true remedy for a want of constancy and public spirit is to inspire firmness, not to inspire timidity. Sound and just conceptions, if communicated to the mind with perspicuity, may be expected to be a sufficient basis for virtue. To tell men that it is necessary they should form their decision by ballot is to tell them that it is necessary they should be ashamed of their integrity.

If sortition taught us to desert out duty, ballot teaches us to draw a veil of concealment over our performance of it. It points out to us a method of acting unobserved. It incites us to make a mystery of our sentiments. If it did this in the most trivial article, it would not be easy to bring the mischief it would produce, within the limits of calculation. But it dictates this conduct in our most important concerns. It calls upon us to discharge our duty to the public with the most virtuous constancy; but at the same time directs us to hide our discharge of it. One of the most beneficial principles in the structure of the material universe will perhaps be found to be its tendency to prevent our withdrawing ourselves from the consequences of our own actions. A political institution that should attempt to counteract this principle would be the only true impiety. How can a man have the love of the public in his heart, without the dictates of that love flowing to his lips? When we direct men to act with secrecy, we direct them to act with frigidity. Virtue will always be an unusual spectacle among men, till they shall have learned to be at all times ready to avow their actions, and assign the reasons upon which they are founded.

If then sortition and ballot be institutions pregnant with vice, it follows that all social decisions should be made by open vote; that, wherever we have a function to discharge, we should reflect on the purpose for which it ought to be exercised; and that, whatever conduct we are persuaded to adopt, especially in matters of routine and established practice, be adopted in the face of the world.”

Karakura Town Santa letters

As requested by anon. :)

We’ve already looked at the Santa letters written by the Quincy, the espada and the Gotei-13. Next up are the residents of Karakura Town! What sort of letters might they write to Santa?

1. To Santa from Karin,

Dear Santa,

You don’t exist, obviously. No more than ghosts or monsters or soul reapers exist. But I will write to you anyway because it’s important to my stupid dad. So for Christmas I would like a new soccer ball and that new video game I’ve been looking at (if you are really magical, you’ll know the one) and also please let me brother be home for the holidays. You can just throw him in your sack. He’s durable.

From,

Karin

2. To Santa from Yuzu

Dear Santa,

Please please help my brother be home for Chrimstas!! And uninjured too? If that’s not too much to ask. It’s all I want!

Thank you!!

Love,

Yuzu

3. To Santa from Karin

PS Please get my sister a new stuffed lion, an apron with strawberries on it, and that one recipe book. She deserves it.

4. To Santa from Chad

Dear Santa,

Do not worry about me. Just make sure that all of the kids and animals have presents. Especially the cute ones. Which, as you know, is all of them.

Love,

Chad

5. To Santa from Mizuho,

Dear Santa,

I only want one thing: a very bald and handsome and willing man. You know the one. Leave him tied up under my tree please! Clothing is so optional.

Love,

Mizuho

6. To Santa from Keigo

Dear Santa,

You’re magical or something, right? Can you put some sort of magical shield around our town to keep hollows out? Or like put your flying reindeer out there with zanpakuto? Something? We could really use it!

Sincerely,

Keigo

7. To Santa from Mizuiro

Dear Santa,

Please find enclosed a list of…high-end items for the popular gentleman with discerning lady friends. If your elves aren’t comfortable making sex toys, then I can recommend some stores. Anything you can afford to get me would be much appreciated! And not just by me.

Sincerely,

Mizuiro

8. To Santa from Tatsuki

Dear Santa,

Do your elves make karate gear? I could use some new stuff, since mine has gotten pretty beat up. Oh, also a punching bag would be pretty cool. I need to stay in shape for when the fighting inevitable ends up in Karakura Town again, you know?

Sincerely,

Tatsuki

9. To Santa from Orihime

Dear Santa,

Hello! I hope you are doing well and that you enjoyed the cookies and donuts I left out for you! To be honest, most of the things I want are things that I don’t think quite fall under your influence - you know, like eternal peace and Kurosaki-kun’s love and transparency from Soul Society. But I’d take some new manga, whatever your favorite Christmas sweets are, and some powerful sunscreen. I’ve sure been in this desert a while.

Love,

Orihime

10. To Santa from Jinta

Dear Santa,

Could I have some high-end baseball gear? Like from a real department store, not whatever your elves make. Thx.

From,

Jinta

11. To Santa from Ururu,

Dear Santa,

I would love to have some clothes. Not that I don’t love my two dads, but their fashion sense is not exactly…something I want to emulate. I mean, you just wear a giant fuzzy red suit, but I still trust your fashion sense more. Please make it something cute.

Sincerely,

Ururu

12. To Santa from Yoruichi

Dear Santa,

Do your elves make fancy tuna? I would love some fancy tuna. Trade you for candy I found in Kisuke’s store!

From,

Yoruichi

13. To Santa from Urahara

Dear Santa,

Please bring some high-end tuna so that I can give it to my friend Yoruichi. Thank you!

Love,

Urahara

14. To Santa from Misato

Dear Santa,

Please watch out for my students this Christmas season. Except for the delinquents. Whatever they have coming to them, they have coming. Thank you very much!

From,

Misato

15. To Santa from Ichigo

Dear Santa,

I don’t know what sort of powers you have, dude, but in my experience people who can fly also have the ability to produce magical swords from their body. So if you could, just see that my friends stay safe. I can’t be everywhere, but I hear that you can be. I’d appreciate the help! You know, just in case I get trapped in any more spheres.

Sincerely,

Ichigo
