Why Magical Girls Are Never Attacked During A Transformation

As some of you might already have guessed, I’m a fan of Japanese girl idols. One of the many, many idol groups in existence today in Japan is NMB48, a Osaka-based spin-off group of the (in)famous AKB48. NMB has a weekly show that’s surprisingly entertaining as well as educational called NMB to Manabu-kun, in which the members of NMB and a few comedians listen to guest lectures by experts in various fields.

Back on May 15th, the theme of the episode was pataphysics/the science of sci-fi. One of the topics of the lecture held by university professor Yanagita Rikao was the age-old question of “WHY ARE MAGICAL GIRLS NEVER ATTACKED WHILE TRANSFORMING???”

This was his answer, based on the magical girl series Futari wa Pretty Cure.

Question: The transformation scenes in Pretty Cure are very long, so why don’t the bad guys attack the girls in the meantime?

“Even when I was little, I was thinking ‘Hey! Attack them now!’”

“I found this odd as well, so I watched the transformation scene many times. And what I noticed is, when the Pretty Cures yell 'Dual Aurora Wave!’ and transform, a rainbow-colored column of light shoots up from the ground, going BOOM!”

“And then the Pretty Cures levitate, and go up into the air. Based on this, I believe the protagonists of Pretty Cure are being held up in the air by the power of light.”

“When we think of light, we usually think it heats up things or lights up things. But in reality, light has the power to hold up things as well.”

“When the sun is beating down on us in the summer, the human body is being pressed downwards by the sun beams with a force of 2/100,000g.”

“But this is only about a one-hundred of the weight of a mosquito, so no matter how hot it is, we don’t feel that sunlight is heavy.”

“So that means the light holding them up must be extremely strong. If we assume that the two Pretty Cures each weigh about 45kg and do some calculations…”

“It means the light during the transformation must have the energy of 2,100,000,000kW per 1m2.”

“While the entirety of power that Japan is capable of generating is only 100,000,000kW.”

“So they’re using 21 TIMES the amount of energy the whole of Japan can generate.”

“So what would happen if a bad guy jumped in to try to sabotage their transformation?”

“He would EVAPORATE INSTANTLY.”

DEATH AWAITS ANYONE WHO DARES TO DISRUPT A PRETTY CURE TRANSFORMATION.

“So this means the best thing to do would be to transform close to any bad guys.”

“Yes. They are the strongest while they transform, and are practically invincible.”

what if cybertronian was so complex and intricate with its mixed feelings/wellness/intent that when its translated to english (or any other Earth language) that the most the new language can express is the barest, most basic and rudimentary translation of the cybertronian its attempting to convey?

A cursory glance across 17th and 18th Century German esoteric tracts reveals a great fondness for impenetrable diagrams, symbols and to be honest, some quite bonkers looking cosmology. Influenced by the works of their own Heinrich Khunrath and mystic apprentice shoemaker Jakob Böhme ( Jacob Boehme or any other number of versions; his name has as many different spellings as cabala, kabbalah, qab… oh you get the picture) and our own dear Dee and Fludd, pages and pages of imposing and intricate plates attempted to explain the universe in a hermetic, spiritual, Rosicrucian and alchemical manner. Some good examples are diagrams in Von Rosenroth’s Kabbala Denudata (1677-84), the mindbending cosmic geometry of Welling’s Opus Mago-Cabbalisticum (1735 – from which my header image is taken) and the subject of today’s piece the marvellous Geheime Figuren der Rosenkreuzer aus dem 16ten und 17ten Jahrhundert (1785-88.) Before anyone gets too excited (have a seat and a glass of water madam) it is not the first edition we will be looking at but the first (partial) English translation: Cosmology and Universal Science…Secret Symbols of the Rosicrucians by Franz Hartmann Boston: Occult Publishing Company, 1888:

Transcription of DNA into RNA, enzymatic reactions, RNA, RNA degradation

  • Transcription
    1. Initiation: promoter recognition, closed complex, open complex.
      • Promoter:
        • Prokaryotic: ←upstream, -35 region, Pribnow box, transcription start site (TSS, +1), downstream→
        • Eukaryotic: ←upstream, several upstream elements, TATA box, initiator element containing TSS (+1), downstream→
        • The high A-T composition in promoters facilitate unwinding of DNA.
        • Template strand = antisense strand = (-) strand = noncoding strand = the DNA strand that serves as the template for transcription.
        • Nontemplate strand = sense strand = (+) strand = coding strand = the DNA strand having the same sequence as the transcribed RNA.
      • Binding to promoter:
        • Prokaryotic:
          • holoenzyme = core enzyme (polymerase activity) + σ-subunit (promoter and strand specificity).
          • binding first forms the closed complex, and then DNA opens up, forms the open complex.
        • Eukaryotic:
          • A whole bunch of transcription factors (TFs) involved in promoter recognition, binding, and openning up DNA.
          • TBP = Tata binding protein. TAF = TBP associated factor.
          • Phosphorylation of Pol II C-terminal domain (CTD) opens DNA up, forms the open complex.
        • Polymerase must transcribe using the correct template strand. The σ-factor (prokaryotes) and TFs (eukaryotes) tell the RNA polymerase to bind the coding strand, while using the template strand as the template.
    2. Elongation:
      • Polymerases:
        • Prokaryotes have just one.
        • Eukaryotes have three:
          • 1. RNA Pol I: makes rRNA (except the small 5S rRNA that resembles a tRNA in size).
          • 2. RNA Pol II: makes mRNA.
          • 3. RNA Pol III: makes tRNA (and 5S rRNA).
      • Incorporation of NTPs.
      • Prokaryotes lose σ-subunit. Eukaryotes lose TFs.
      • Topoisomerases relaxing supercoils ahead and behind the polymerase.
      • Transcription-coupled repair: RNA Pol II encounters DNA damage, backs up, TFIIH comes along, recruits repair enzymes. Defective TFIIH → faulty transcription-coupled repair → Xeroderma pigmentosum and Cockayne syndrome (skin sensitive to sunlight radiation in both diseases).
    3. Termination
      • Prokaryotic:
        • Intrinsic termination: GC hairpin (stalls polymerase) followed by poly U (slips off).
        • Rho-dependent termination: ρ protein catches up to polymerase when it stalls at the hairpin, and bumps it off.
      • Eukaryotic:
        • Termination consensus sequence reached (AAUAAA).
        • Polymerase released somewhere further downstream to the consensus sequence.
  • RNA
    • 1. RNA = ribonucleic acid, has 2’-OH.
    • 2. rRNA = ribosomal RNA
      • Most abundant (r for rampant).
      • Catalyzes peptide bond formation in the ribosome.
    • 3. mRNA = messenger RNA
      • Longest (m for massive).
      • Contains sequence of codons for translation.
      • RNA splicing
        • pre-mRNA need to be processed.
        • Introns = interfering sequences, cut out.
        • Exons = spliced together.
        • RNA splicing proceeds via a lariat intermediate, by the action of the spliceosome (snRNPs), introns released in lariat form.
        • Some RNA can self splice.
    • 4. tRNA = transfer RNA
      • Smallest (t for tiny).
      • Contains anticodon.
      • Shuttles the correct amino acid to the correct codon during translation.
    • 5. snRNPs (snurps) = RNA + protein, involved in RNA splicing.
  • RNA degradation
    • RNases degrade RNA.
    • Post-transcriptional modifications protect RNA from degradation (5’ cap and polyA tail)
    • 2’-O-methylation prevents that position from attacking the RNA backbone.

@Regrann from @freedom_faction - The first peer-reviewed study comparing health outcomes of #vaccinated children versus unvaccinated was recently published in the Journal of Translational Science by epidemiologists from the School of Public Health at #JacksonStateUniversity. The study’s conclusions are likely to inflame the fierce debate over whether vaccines and a mercury-containing vaccine preservative may be culprits in the dramatic rise in certain neurodevelopmental disorders in our children, including autism.

The “Pilot comparative study on the health of #vaccinated and #unvaccinated 6- to 12-year-old U.S. children” implicates vaccines in a host of chronic illnesses now epidemic in our nation’s children. The team of scientists, led by the renowned epidemiologist Dr. Anthony Mawson, the author of more than fifty published studies, concluded that “In a final adjusted model designed to test for this possibility, controlling for the interaction of preterm birth and vaccination, the following factors remained significantly associated with NDD: vaccination (OR 2.5, 95% CI: 1.1, 5.6), nonwhite race (OR 2.4, 95% CI: 1.1, 5.4), and male gender (OR 2.3, 95% CI: 1.2, 4.4). Preterm birth itself, however, was not significantly associated with NDD, whereas the combination (interaction) of preterm birth and vaccination was associated with 6.6-fold increased odds of NDD (95% CI: 2.8, 15.5) (Table 8).” Jackson State is a leading university research center.

The study suggests that fully vaccinated children may be trading the prevention of certain acute illnesses (chicken pox, pertussis) for more chronic illnesses and #neurodevelopmentaldisorders (NDDs) like #ADHD and #Autism.

In order to find a large population of children who hadn’t received any vaccines, the Jackson State scientists utilized #Homeschool organizations in four states and compared the incidence of a broad range of health outcomes in 666 children, 39% of whom were unvaccinated. 🖐🏾More in comments👇🏾 - #regrann

General Advice

  • try your best. not everyone can get all As, and getting all As does not make you better than everyone else. just do the best you can and be the best person you can be.

  • don’t sleep in class! i know it seems so so tempting but slept my way through geography last year and i got a C in my exam instead of the expected A so…

  • Don’t tick off your teacher, follow the rules to an extent, get to class on time, respect your classmates and teachers. you know, just be a decent person.

  • be positive!!! and not just for the first week or so, keep the positivity going throughout the whole school year. if you don’t believe in yourself then why should anyone else?

  • “you can do it, wildcat, i believe in u” — something troy bolton said one time probably definitely

  • Smile and introduce yourself to people- whether you’re sitting next to them or have seen them in more than one of your classes. Everyone likes to make new friends (even if we’re too shy to do it most of the time).

  • Find which clubs look interesting and go to their first meetings- there’s never an obligation to join, but you might meet a lot of new friends.

  • Get advice from other students on if your classes/teachers are difficult and figure out which ones you’ll need to work the hardest in.

  • this or this. it’ll whip your ass into gear. you name a list of websites that distract you, set a timer, and bam. no more hour long study breaks. the best - or worst - part is, it can’t be undone by the application, by deleting the application, or by restarting the computer. you just gotta wait, and if you’re going to wait, you may as well study.

  • goals. when you sit down to study, write down everything you’re going to do. then do it. aimlessly staring at your books won’t do shit.

  • something to listen to. i suggest movie scores, song covers by the vitamin string quartet

  • a queue. if you’re really obsessed with keeping your blog up to date, set aside some time, fatten up your queue, and let your blog run itself for a few days.

  • breaks. during your breaks, dance, run around, work out, go for a walk, talk to your friends, call your mom. going back on the internet is an easy way to get out of the mood, so i wouldn’t suggest it.

  • tea and coffee - if not for the caffeine, then for the feeling of cozying up with your text books and feeling studious.

  • a place to study. it doesn’t matter if it’s in a coffee house, a library, or your kitchen table. as long as your bed’s not in sight and tempting you into a nap, you’re good.

  • your mental health is more important than your grades/school work

  • you are fabulous

  • they’re probably not even paying attention when you give a presentation

  • one friend is better than no friends

  • eat a healthy lunch

  • take care of yourself

  • please stay safe

  • your mental health is more important than your grades/school work

  • I love you

Hey! People have been asking for uploads and translations of the CR comics, so I decided to start posting from one of my issues I have. This is a short story from a science comic. Since this is my first post on this, I’ll give a bit of info:

There are many CR comic series, some excellent, some…not so much. This is from the Science short stories series, specifically an issue on forensics. There’s also series about hanja, spelling, geography, and survival. Some are short stories, some are ongoing stories. Each is their own universe, none are entirely canon to the games.

That being said, these comics are educational joke stories for kids. So character roles change around a bit from time to time…mainly their jobs so they can fit into whatever they’re teaching. So don’t take these stories too seriously!

(Also, the short stories aren’t continuous stories, which is why I chose to start with #20…I thought it would be the most interesting to start with! I hope to post all 25 stories eventually.)

I think one of my fav things in the chaos verse is all the times science and magic have to get along and how some character end up science-magic translators. Like Nick Fury is outright looking into hiring people to do it it’s gotten so bad within a year after the Avengers form.

Peter Parker ends up the main one since he’s a scientist who hangs out with Dr. Strange and Loki at lot pre-Avengers-formation and asked them a lot of questions. He doesn’t mind so much but sometimes he would like to just do science, please.

Loki can kinda function as one but he admits his ability to speak science is limited to a high school level since those are the textbooks Harry and Peter had on hand most of the time. So if someone better’s not around the scientist in question has to take their science stuff and put it simpler terms and hope doing so does not prevent accurate translation.

Harry Osborn is learning how to do it but he’s more likely to understand the magic and science topics people around him know best (biology, chemistry and neogenics for Peter, illusions, transmutation, and conjuration for Loki, and counterspells, healing, and sealing magics for Dr. Strange). If you ask him to explain things like thermodynamics or magical weather control he will just stare at you blankly.

Tony wants to learn it but has so much on his plate that he keeps just having to delegate. Peter tries to leave him notes on the subject when he can.

Thor’s actually picked up meteorology, thermodynamics, and the science of spectral energy. This is because his civilian alter ego of Kevin was hired by four ghost hunters who wrote a book on the subject that he has read several times now. He’s actually a really good secretary once he gets the hang of it, too. Jane has also helped him with astrophysics.

Darcy says she’s too busy learning to translate Asgardian politics to human politics and vice-versa (she got a sweet internship for explaining SHIELD to Frigga, it looks great on her resume) to pick up the science-magic stuff. “I do political science, people!”

Did some science marching today!

My signs showed two issues I wanted to represent:

1) Science is not just valuable when it shows clear impact on human lives, but basic research is vital as well (green fluorescent protein from jellyfish is a great example of how basic research has brought innovation and advancement to many areas of translational and clinical science). Knowledge for the sake of knowledge is important and worth funding/supporting.

2) Science should not be exclusionary. It is for all people and is something everyone can engage in. The more we engage and educate people who only see the ivory tower and help them understand science, the better off we are as a society. (And the more diversity we have as scientists, the broader our potential for innovation.)

Beau had his own sign that read: “Doggo for Science”. He supports science funding because it keeps his human getting paid and able to buy him lots of toys and treats.
