transition to fall

It’s Fire Cider making season!!

Half of today was just a huge cider crafting adventure. Half of these herbs are from my yard while the rest were from the market. I had the idea of making different ciders for various purposes and various correspondences. I even gave them names!!

Burning passion:
Red cabbage, radishes, hibiscus petals, red onion, grapefruit, purple basil flowers, black peppercorn. I wanted this to taste sensual and fiery like a smokey flower. Can be used in love tonic spells or for courage.

devils kiss:
Sweet red peppers, chili peppers, red bell pepper, shallots, dried chili flakes, sweet garden tomatoes. I wanted this to be traditionally spicy but with a rich sweet taste. The tomatoes were ripe and from my garden and have such a rich sweetness to them.

amber blaze:
Oranges, sweet orange peppers, carrots, cinnamon, anise, habanero peppers (going to sweeten it with maple syrup after probably). I just wanted this to have the festiveness of fall and kick any cold I would potentially have in the crotch.

gold fire:
Ginger, turmeric, lemon, yellow onion, sweet yellow peppers. I was just excited to use pure turmeric. There’s a beautiful glow to this one.

white inferno:
Daikon radish, white onion, garlic, rosemary, cardamom, white pepper, chive flowers, basil flowers, chives. This one has a intense cleansing feel to it, nutritionally and energetically. I really felt like adding rosemary to this recipe would be right. I love the whole white flowers in there too that make it have more of this sense of purifying. The white pepper powder for some reason sparkles in it so it feels sparkly and light. The daikon radish is so light and refreshing when you first bite into it but it has an airy fieriness that permeates the whole mouth two seconds later. I’m excited to see what type of spice and flavor it will have after a few months!

emerald ember:
Horseradish, parsley, lime, basil, orange mint, jalapeño peppers, green bell peppers. I really wanted a cider that would be very herbal yet refreshing. I wanted it to have the type of spice that opens up your sinuses and third eye lol.

My fingers were burning for an hour after haha. I am so glad it finally stopped.

The Autumnal Equinox: Finding balance as the cycle ends

With the happy, chaotic vibes of summer coming to a close, we welcome in the more introspective part of the year. It is a time to withdraw, to cleanse, to give thanks for what we have grown in the year and prepare that which we are ready to discard on the Feast of Ashes in October.

Often this is a time to gather with those you care about, or simply revel in your love of self and reflect on the dropping temperatures and changing leaves. The bounty of the late summer garden gives way to roots and gourds and the last of the herb garden offerings.

Like the Spring Equinox, this period marks a time of equal day and night, making it a good time for magic that relates to reining in bad habits, finding peace in a busy lifestyle, or bringing harmony to a household in strife. Unlike the Spring Equinox, however, which focuses on bringing balance to restore energy and vigor for growth the Autumnal Equinox welcomes you to bring balance for a proper rest. It’s energy asks you to appreciate everything you have done, big or small, and prepare for the darker half of the year by gathering up all of your grief, fear, anxiety and exhaustion in bundles before you so you can be ready to let them go. For we cannot release what we do not need if you don’’t first examine what we have and who we are.

I will share with you some of my traditions for this time of year, to give you an idea of the kind of productive magical and mundane work you can do to prepare yourself for the waning light. As someone with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), I find that my transition into Fall is very important to my mental health as it reminds me to let go of what I cannot control.

Some good Autumnal Equinox traditions:

🍁 Just like Spring Cleaning, you can do some Fall Cleaning and prepping your house for the colder months. Put out your cold weather clothes (if appropriate for the time) and go through your warm weather things to bag up what doesn’t fit anymore or is unwanted anymore to give to secondhand stores or repurpose into other things (old t-shirts make nice dusting clothes~!), check windows for drafts, clean the fireplace and chimney if you have one, polish up your kitchen and pantry, sweep and mop floors and reset any wards or protection magics you have on your space.

🍁 If you are so inclined, the first day of Fall is a perfect day to decorate for Halloween and for the season! You can make a ritual out of it like I do by sipping hot apple cider and playing some spooky or seasonally associated music (I tend to gravitate toward richer, warmer folk music around this time of year!)

🍁 This is the second harvest holiday, and I personally strongly link this time of year to apples, so you could go apple picking and afterwards make an apple ie charmed to bring peace and happiness to those who eat it! Or if you picked a lot of apples make a happiness applesauce! You can also slice up apples and cook them in the oven to make apple chips for teas or just to snack on.

🍁 If you are looking to bring balance into some aspect of your life, consider setting up a white candle and a black candle on your altar (or perhaps a yellow/gold and blue/silver set would work too!) As you work your magic for the day, the candles will invoke the equinox spirit into your working! If you cannot have candles, you can use a sunstone and a moonstone, or you could use clay or paper colored with your desired hues depicting balance.

🍁 If the weather is fair and you have one near you, I find that visiting a river or stream is particularly nice as they are a body of Water, which is linked to emotions and also to the properties of motion and overcoming obstacles. If you find that you are having trouble coming to terms with some aspect of yourself or an event in your life, spending time near a river or placing a river stone on your altar might help you.

These are just a few ideas of how to bring the Equinox energies into your home and to use them in your practice. Other popular activities include feasting, offering appropriate gifts to spirits of the land and home, having a bon fire, and tying natural strings to trees  as a form of wish making.

Dear girls (yes, all of you),

This is not strictly sapphic, but important nonetheless:

Regardless of the nuances of your identity as a girl/woman/woman aligned individual, there’s an enormous amount of pressure to love, have sex with, and be with men. That does not, of course, mean that this pressure manifests the same way for all girls. However, I think we can all agree that no girl is completely immune to these societal pressures.

You are under no obligation to be with men. You are under no obligation to date, have sex with, marry, kiss, commit to, or hold any kind of relationship with men you do not wish to have. You do not owe specific men this, and you do not owe this to men as a class, either. If you do these things, it should be because you want to, not because you “should”.

It doesn’t matter how many men you’ve been with in the past. It doesn’t matter if you’re attracted to men, even if you’re strongly attracted to them. It doesn’t matter if you want these things in theory. You are in charge of your relationships, and what you want out of them. Ideally, you should not pursue anything unless you are sure you want it, and it should be done at your own pace (and if your own pace is “never”, that’s fine too.)

To lesbians and gay women, only wanting relationships with other women/women aligned folk is great! You are not “close minded” for being disinterested in men. Even if at one point you thought you were attracted to men, there is no issue with leaving this in the past and embracing your identity. I wish you luck in you seeking out relationships with women (at your own pace).

To bi, pan, polysexual, and otherwise multi gender attracted women, you do not need to “prove” that you’re attracted to multiple genders with your dating history. If you’d rather avoid being with men right now (or ever) this is fine, even if you’re attracted to them. You have every right to focus on your relationships with women and/or non-binary people, or to avoid relationships in general if you so choose. Your sexuality should not be defined as “available to men” by anyone - you have autonomy! Even if you pursue men, your “availability” is determined by you rather than inherently implied by your sexuality.

To trans women, gatekeepers might say you’re not “real” unless you are exclusively interested in men and seek out relationships with them. This could not be more false! You are no less trans, and no less of a woman, than trans women who fit under the typical trans narrative. Like cis women, you should feel free to date someone of any gender you choose, or nobody at all if you’d prefer. No doctor should deny you the opportunity to medically transition because your sexuality falls outside what they consider “legitimate”.

To asexual women, despite societal pressure to find a man and be a “good girlfriend” to him by pleasing him sexually, there is nothing wrong with your lack of sexual attraction. Ace or not, no man (or person in general) should pressure you into sexual acts you’re uncomfortable with. There is also nothing wrong with seeking out romantic relationships without a sexual component. Communication is key, and if it’s what you desire, I hope you eventually find a relationship that suits your needs.

To aromantic women, I know it seems that all sorts of media pushes the idea that there is nothing more fulfilling than romantic love with a man. However, if romantic love isn’t your thing, you have every right to avoid it. And if you desire sex but not romance, then there is nothing wrong with seeking that out with partners you’ve communicated your desires to.

To straight women, you are not excluded from this message! You still deserve happiness and fulfillment in your relationships, and more importantly, you should not feel pressured to settle for the first half decent man that comes along. Your relationships with men should be done at your own pace. If this means you hit some milestones late, or never, then there’s nothing wrong with that. Just remember that not all girls are exclusively attracted to men like you are (and some aren’t attracted to men at all)! Respect their choices as well.

To questioning women, I hope you someday find a label that resonates with you, but don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t happen right away (or ever). The process of questioning should be done at your own pace. Don’t feel like you have to rush to figure out a label, or force yourself to do anything you’re uncomfortable with just to speed along the process of finding yourself. Maybe you’re attracted to men. Maybe you aren’t. Maybe you’ll never be completely sure. You’re valid nonetheless.

To women who fit under more than one of these labels, or another label altogether, there’s nothing wrong with your identity being more complicated than some are used to. Like everyone else, you should be allowed to pursue relationships at your own pace, with whoever you feel comfortable with - and if that includes men, I hope this is because you want to and not because of outside pressure!

Take care of yourself, ladies!

🍂Balancing Autumn Tarot Spread🍂

I love Autumn so I thought I would make a little spread to help us transition with the falling leaves. As we head into this beautiful season it’s a great time to pull out your fave deck of Tarot, Oracle or whatever cards you have lying around and check in!

  1. Breath in.  What are you breathing in?  In other words, where are you getting your energies in life, specifically this fall season. This card may point to balances or imbalances in your life, it could be a toxic person, a bad habit, or maybe you’re breathing in only positive energy.
  2. Breath out. What are you breathing out?  What are you shedding and undoing – what are you letting go of this fall to help you progress and find peace and happiness?
  3.  Harvesting. What are you harvesting this season? Notice what you’ve grown! This card can represent that which has grown beautifully in your life, or maybe how beautifully you’ve grown. Or it can represent anything that needs to be cut away.
  4. Gratitude. What do you need to be grateful for at this time? Where could you be more grateful? What are the wonderful things in your life you don’t notice enough? It’s good to take a note of this, maybe leave a post it not or photo on your wall to remind you to be grateful this winter!
  5.  Grounding. How can you ground your energy at this time? How are you going to stay grounded now that there will be less opportunities to roll around in dirt and wiggle your toes in the grass?
  6. Harvesting Gifts. What can you do to share with those around you? What can you do to be more generous or helpful in the community during these cold months?

The Harvest Transition

(Link to my Midpoints post) but to those familiar with my personal practice I follow my own wheel that has moments for celebration, moments for rest/relaxation and moments for action. The transition periods between seasons are the moments of action and we are currently in the harvest transition!

Transitions are always incredibly strange, awkward yet magical times if the year that feels like liminal space. We are just waiting for the next season while it’s no longer currently the last (like it’s still technically summer but 61 degree New Jersey with cool breezes doesn’t feel like it, yet it’s still not fall). The transition phases are all about preparation for what’s to come but also moments to take advantage of the unique time to create magical tools you can not create to the same effect any other time of year.

The harvest transition is unique since it’s the time everything is ready to be harvested and is ripe! We are in a transition of preserving and storing. Funnily enough two of my witchy friends call it the potion making season and it’s very true. This is a heavy kitchen witch magic intensive transition and as I’m currently in the middle of cultivating some tools I’ll share some activities with you in case you would like ideas!

🍺 The first thing I always associate with this transition is cider. This is a huge cider making transition of all and any ciders. If I had the means I would definitely hands down be brewing fresh apple cider right now in my basement but I don’t have the proper yeast or the money to buy bags of apples lol.

🌶 This is a fire cider season. This will be my first year making my own fire cider and my overly ambitious ass is going to make 6! (I’m going to make them color coordinated and have different associations. One for example is white fire and it will have garlic, white chive flowers, white onion, cardemom, white pepper, rosemary and white radish in it. For emerald ember it’s going to have parsley, cilantro, lime peel, horseradish and green peppers. I really want the green one to have that refreshing nose opening spice that’s super herbal and icy hot. There’s also going to be a gold, red, orange and violet one with stuff from my garden that are of those colors).

🍷 Apple cider vinegar is powerful and creates intense and healing elixirs. If you have a garden (like me) or access to a farmers market you can make a combination of healing elixirs from fresh herbs. Also infused vinegars are healthy and taste good if you add it into salads or any other food. A great elixir that comes to mind that is healthy for your urinary tract and menstrual health is red clover, raspberry leaf and dandelion leaves. (Get dandelion from an organic herb shop since most in the wild are either sprayed with pesticides or growing somewhere toxic. In general it’s wise to get herbs from a farm or organic shop if you can’t find it in your own backyard that you know you didn’t spray).

🍸 For more infusions and magic a lot of fruits, vegetables and herbs are in season and if you are into mixology like me or enjoy cooking with alcohol you should make infusions. Vodka is usually the best in that it has no flavor so it would taste like what you infused. This also makes excellent cooking extracts! Gin infuses best with herbs (though you could still use vodka cause gin is literally just vodka with herbs), rum infuses best with fruits, whiskey with spices and fruits mixed with honey, tequila with peppers and herbs (tequila is so summery for me I ignore it usually this time of year but since we talked about fire cider all that stuff you can put in fire cider would make an EXCELLENT fiery tequila infusion). And with your sweeter vodka infusions if you want it to be a cordial (something sweet you can drink straight up or that can really add to other drinks) you can take the same fruit you chose for the infusion and make a simple syrup with it (same parts water and sugar and let it simmer all together) and in a bottle pour 1/3 syrup and 2/3 infusion. (Can be ¼ syrup and the rest infusion it depends on the desired strength and sweetness).

🌱 Not everything has to be potion crafting though. If you are blessed with a dehydrator or oven you can dry herbs and fruits which would be ideal for tea blends. I dry so many apple slices this time of year for tea. You can also use these dried substances in spells like home made ground incense or magical smoking blends. You can also add dried fruits and vegetables in oil blends (since the water in those foods will be evaporated it will infuse better)

🍯 Speaking of oil infusions (and going back to the potion making lol) since a lot of herbs and produce is in season, making herbal oils would be a great practice. Certain oil blends can be used in hair, food or to anoint candles or wear on the body as magic. You can also add these magic infusions to soap gel potions for baths or mix with home made body creams! Just make sure it’s herbs that’s safe to go on the skin.
Infuse things like rosemary and basil in olive oil for a money oil spell. Put mugwort lavender and catnip in grapeseed for a dreaming oil. I know some oils have certain properties like olive is solar and grapeseed and coconut I know are lunar. I’m unsure about the others but of course correspondences are up to you (unless they relate to nutritional reasons then their correspondences usually have reasons.)

🥒This is also the season to pickle foods! I will post a few recipes but pickling onions and fermenting cabbage is great for your health. T'is the season for pickling and making jams too!

I might add more to this but for now these are the main activities of the transition!

the gayest moments (of bts’ history) part 2

(here it is, the long awaited, highly requested and probably super terrible list)

  • So starting off from Danger, there are lots of consistent motifs that in later music videos arguably are used for the storylines between particular members for example the piano which links jungkook and yoongi (and later jimin too because of the lie short film); a lot of the imagery surrounding the piano just has a relationship-ish vibe (see the vcr from the wings tour and the fact they play it together in run)
  • Ayo ladies AND gentlemen from Dope……………… bi icons if I ever saw them
  • Look up the hyyh pt 1 and 2 photos, the ones of Jimin and J-Hope lying on the floor and the ones with Jimin and Jungkook in the field in particular… gay
  • In I Need U there is a scene where Namjoon and Taehyung are lying on the ground with their arms around one another (bonus gay: tae said ‘we’re on a date’ and namjoon said ‘so romantic’ as they were filming it)
  • In the aforementioned moment, the lyric at the same time is ‘it is my heart mind, emotion/ but don’t listen to my words’ - gay if you ask me
  • In the scenes of I Need U towards the end, Yoongi and Jungkook hug and Jimin and J-Hope play around and…….. gay
  • In the prologue, Jungkook blows out Yoongi’s flame………… there’s a metaphor there somewhere…………. it’s gay
  • I can’t put my finger on why but the scene where Jungkook is sitting on the peer and Yoongi joins him has such a quiet poignance to it and even before I knew much about bts when I first saw it, it felt very gay to me like the shot sequence and how it’s edited/shot very much makes it feel like a scene where maybe Jungkook has just come out to Yoongi or something it just has that vibe
  • Lollipops feature heavily in….. lots of music videos but…. we’ll talk about why they’re gay when we get to blood sweat and tears
  • The shot of J-Hope and Jimin lying back in the feathers in run……..
  • Suga’s motel in I Need U has a couple of points to raise - the possibility that it’s Jungkook’s shirt in the background, and also the suggestion that its maybe the same motel you can see in the JPN version of bs&t and also possibly the motel in spring day
  • There’s a really interesting choice with the editing towards the end of the 19+ version of run where it parallels through transitions, Tae with the bottle and his dad and him having fun with Namjoon, smiling, clutching onto his arm it gives me……. thoughts
  • When Namjoon and Tae get chased by the police in Run, the lyric is ‘this is a fool, crazy in love, chasing in circles’…. bit romantic if you ask me
  • also just… the look Taehyung gives Namjoon when they’re caught by the police
  • And the look Hobi gives Jimin when he wakes up to see him
  • I don’t think it’s specifically being referenced at all but a lot of the motifs used during the hyyh era are similar motifs used in the game Life Is Strange (which has a f/f plot basically) - cameras, butterfly effect, whales, water, etc. like once you notice them you keep seeing them
  • In Run, the transition from Hobi falling asleep backwards to where they’re all sitting in the field with Hobi on Jimin’s lap and Tae on Namjoon’s stomach, the lyric is ‘memories crumble like dried flower petals/at the tip of my fingers, under my feet, right behind your back’…… idk about you but sounds gay to me
  • (the people in the cars are heterosexuality)
  • When Yoongi and Jungkook are fighting the lyric is ‘my love stripped bare/the stormy winds)
  • Run if you look at it has very very romantically charged lyrics that are constantly being related to the m/m interactions on screen
  • Religious imagery is often used in a lot of gay literature….. there’s also a lot in bts music videos for example the young forever trilogy can be taken as young forever signifying purgatory, fire signifying hell and save me signifying heaven) and also, in bs&t, especially in ref. to Demian by Herman Hesse (which heavily discusses looking at scripture differently from how it’s taught)
  • In Young Forever, lyrics such as ‘mixed feelings, I tried to hide it but I can’t’ can be taken as… kinda gay
  • The Young Forever Jacket Shoot……. the hot air balloon looks like a rainbow flag that is all
  • Demian is explicitly and heavily referenced throughout the wings era and……. the next few points I’m just going to go over just how gay this is to reference
  • So first things first, this story has much of the same staples as many other 20th century gay German writings
  • It follows Sinclair as he struggles against temptation (which is represented by his closeness to Demian, who teaches him about questioning religious dogma) and basically the whole thing is a lot of….. denial of attraction
  • Gender is also dealt with in the story and is often subverted and skewed subtly (although most of the academic info I could find just mentioned it as like……. a lesser version of what Hesse did in Siddhartha)… he possible female love interest is described as ‘boyish’, Demian and his mother are complexly dealt with……. it’s very interesting to pick apart
  • Sin is a huge huge huge huge thing
  • There’s also a moment which gets referenced in the Wings short films with the paintings where Sinclair tries to draw the aforementioned female love interest but the painting ends up being of demian and this is… super gay in the way that it’s written
  • I basically went through the entire text and highlighted all the parts that in a serious academic essay would be used as evidence of a gay reading of demian………. ¾ was highlighted
  • so boy meets evil…… it’s all about temptation…. forbidden attraction…. feeling ashamed about who you love and what you feel…. please give me a heterosexual explanation for this i beg you
  • Blood sweat and tears……….. I don’t even have to go into detail because it’s pretty blatant but…. I’ll try
  • The swing is… very much used a motif for orgasm it’s like…. very very very obvious - made gayer by the fact Jungkook has a lollipop in his mouth
  • ‘I’ll drink you deep right now, a whisky called you’………………. where’s the hetxplanation
  • When the candle drips on Jungkook’s finger…. and then he puts it in his mouth……………………
  • A film called Chatroom is referenced in Yoongi and Jimin’s scenes in that room and whilst this film doesn’t have a gay storyline it does have a m/m kiss at it’s climax
  • During Yoongi’s ‘kiss me on the lips, a secret between just the two, deeply poisoned by the jail of you’ line there’s a very very deliberate shot of jungkook
  • …..the blindfold…. especially when you see it integrated into the lie choreography…
  • uh…. namjoon blowing out that smoke just as jungkook is in the air???
  • HE too was a tempter HE too was a link to the second….
  • Yoongi holding Jimin’s hand on the way out
  • The entire kiss sequence…. holy hell like please can someone straight explain a way to interpret this as something not gay; Jin kisses a male figure, it goes to a shot of Tae smiling (thus implying through the shot- reverse shot-shot that the statue is Taehyung)…. and then rainbows start bleeding from the statue????
  • Also this whole sequence is basically a gayer version (if it’s possible) of the last scene of Demian where Demian kisses Sinclair
  • also just………………… the MAMA awards moment between jin and tae happened
  • There’s loads of explanations of how gay the songs are on wings….
  • in the wings tour trailer…. like the swing in bs&t the boys being in the air… it’s a metaphor
  • jin kissing himself in his reflection the tour trailer…. the whole sequence between the shots of this where Jimin uncovers his eyes !!! also the shot of jungkook in the air just after
  • jungkook putting his paint covered fingers in his mouth………. again
  • both at MAMA and in the wings tour trailer we see hobi’s boy meets evil choreo and jimin’s lie choreo being linked (and also in the JPN version of blood sweat and tears)
  • the fact that tae has the wings in the tour trailer just makes the reading of him as the statue in bs&t more and more obvious
  • the rainbow butterfly painting
  • jungkook’s rainbow tears
  • the spring day choreo…. there’s lots of moments; jimin and yoongi back to back, tae and jin towards the end, jin and jimin at the very end
  • namjoon sleeping on tae’s shoulder in spring day
  • also just the whole ynwa jacket shoot….. like what kind of soft gay aesthetic both the wings shoots were so… soo…. gay and good
  • spring day moments…. jin piercing jimin’s ear with a pin…. jungkook resting on namjoon’s shoulder… snuggly boys on the bed…
Fall equinox 🍂 September 22nd🍂

Well tomorrow the fall equinox arrives. Which happens twice a year when the sun passes over the equator. It represents the exact day of balance between daylight and darkness, and also the end of summer. No surprise here it also represents the sun moving into libra. There will still be plenty of Virgo energy around for a little while though with Mercury, Venus and Mars still in Virgo. Thoughts of balancing how we take care of ourselves and how we serve others could be circulating for the next few weeks.

Jupiter will be ending its stay in libra in the next couple weeks and will conjunct the moon Tonight. What a lovely way to enter the Equinox, Jupiter will bring positivity and brimming optimism to your emotions and needs tonight and tomorrow morning. Don’t feel bad if you want to indulge in what comforts you emotionally tonight🌹🍁🌼

Summer Lovin’, Summer Leavin’ Wrap-up

Some more photos of this cute 70′s inspired Boho top and my favorite jeans, such a great outfit to transition from summer to fall. I wear this top around the house occasionally and am in love with it!

I also made a necklace to go with it, kind of a chunky Boho inspired look. It doesn’t show up real well in the photos but I was happy with how it turned out and will wear it with other outfits. Also I glued on these french tipped nails and wore them for three days! I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to do it again even though they were a major pain to get them off.

Narrative structure as Dean/Cas possibilities/viewpoints in Dabb Era

I’m sitting here trying to remember the “lesson” of all the cases this past season and really I do think it’s all going to point to what’s coming next for Dean and Cas. Besides some mirrors that portray Mary against Sam and Dean’s histories, there’s been a few cases of one sided love (12x07 and the one with the camping couple where the girl was leaving but the guy loved her more than she loved him) , one of a lover “saving” another by dying with them (12x13), one accidentally getting a best friend killed (12x06), two settling for a reanimated sibling instead of living without them (12x11 and 12x20). I’m sure there’s more (but since I mostly stopped caring deeply where Dean/Cas was going I stopped looking at this show through the meta/predictive lens). It all feels like possible depictions and shades of Dean and Cas’ relationship as it has now found itself. Which situation are they most like? We can’t really tell… for one, because the season isn’t done, and for two because we are given multiple relationship avenues/labels for them while simultaneously committing to none. We see no definitive outcome/depiction for Dean and Cas in a way that can be deemed consistent.

This.

This right here is why it has looked like there’s no narrative structure this season (well, this and the fact that the few Mary mirrors we have been given have just seemingly been shown with no greater purpose than to recap old history, PLUS with no brotherly conflict this year the show hasn’t focused any structural efforts towards the Dean/Sam relationship depiction so when it compares Dean/Cas to siblings it’s a bit jarring). In Carver era, for example, the Dean/Cas relationship was ALWAYS depicted by interspecies/interracial relationships or same sex relationships, or sometimes both. Because of this CONSISTENT defining structure you could always tell the “status” of Dean and Cas’ relationship by looking at these particular “C” plot character mirrors/folds.

In Dabb era this is no longer the case.

My mind compares it to a car now being put in reverse (exclusively romantic being dropped for mixed ones), that has hit the metaphorical gas, but is miraculously being dragged forward by something stronger, a narrative burnout if you will. And that something is the text. The mirrors no longer need to be so precise because Dean is being fairly verbal to Cas this season, and Cas’ problems (the main two being he’s still probably suicidal in his need to clean up his messes while protecting Dean and Sam and he’s feeling eternally “put out” by Heaven by which this season human/Angel interaction “rules” gets an extended highlight and a full episode) are what is driving half the story and have been given a fair bit of text/dialogue themselves.

The whole thing feels like a now blended label of what Cas is specifically to Dean. But since the text is creeping towards being more clear, the subtext and structure can theoretically, therefore, be more loose if the storyline was still a possibility on their radar. Really, I don’t know how I feel about it. As many of you know (or hell, might not know since I mostly converted my blog into an art blog), I was a loud canon supporter and structural meta writer who supported Carver hard (I thought we were headed fast into canon text in S9 before I realized Sam’s “cure” was going to derail the storyline), but became fairly jaded because it became increasingly clear that he was going to leave the subtext as subtext. Like Korrasami, Destiel was canon because of the narrative mirror comparisons (which told the story where the characters would not put said feelings into actual words/text), but easily ignored if it wasn’t your thing. Text is harder to ignore, obviously. So here I am making this post because I’m beginning to see talk of canon again.

While the structured narrative subtext is no longer romantic exclusive for Dean and Cas, the text is, somehow, amazingly, getting closer for Dean to either tell Cas explicitly some feelings in text, or for Dean to give Cas a big romantic gesture (whether this will be healthy is unlikely, but let’s face it… Dean loves in unhealthy ways) of some sort (most possibly in a way that “saves” Cas and/or mourns him in death). I always said I’d be honest with how I felt the show was portraying Dean and Cas and this is currently it. This is what it looks like they are currently doing and setting up. But make no mistake, without a cohesive romantic mirroring structure the whole thing looks narratively weaker and all together more unlikely to lead to canon (regardless of SPN’s history with this storyline’s execution or rather lack there of). But on the plus side, those that want/discuss canon will no look as “delusional” when discussing this possible narrative scenario because it’s definitely no longer being told mostly through wardrobe cues/lighting and other characters. Dean and Cas are using words and actions. We just don’t know yet what *exactly* is going to be said/done between them and we still likely won’t know the true extent for some time.

Stand Abilities:

INSTANT TRANSITION」:「HAMMER TO FALL」Enables Phil to cut out the time transitioning from one action to another, such as going from laughing from a seated position to standing in front of someone. Unlike King Crimson, this time cut affects only Phil, not the rest of the world around. A fighting game fan might view this as a “cancel.” This ability enables the otherwise out of shape Phil to get the jump on faster opponents, as their reaction time can only go so far.

「WEIGHT OF SIN」: While as heavy as a real gavel by itself, 「HAMMER TO FALL」amplifies its force given by how many moral violations the target has performed. While something may be within the law, it may not be morally correct, and vice versa, ensuring that not even dictators who can change the law to their whim are safe from its effect. Furthermore, evil deeds done in the name of good cancel each other out, as would good deeds done for evil.  (For example, if used on the near saintly Johnathan Joestar, it would deal no damage. If used on the morally grey Jotaro Kujo, it would deal damage equal to a proper wooden gavel. If used on the morally bankrupt DIO, it would hit as hard as a fully loaded cargo train at top speed.)

「COOL UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT」: If Phillip deems the capital punishment 「HAMMER TO FALL」can deal is not appropriate for the crime, he can use this substitute. Essentially, Phillip issues a command that would atone for their crime, which is then repeated in the offenders mind over and over, increasingly louder until they are compelled to perform the action.

…I did it. seX

I have a question for you. My sister saw Dr. Strange on and she liked it. I've not seen it because I have been swamped with work--but it is available on Netflix My question is: Should I watch it?

Hey :-) and thank you for the q.

Ok let me give you some (hopefully) compelling reasons why you should very much watch this film. I will try to avoid spoilers as much as I can but am assuming you already know the story etc.

*waits while you make a cup of tea*. Ok. Ready? Let’s go…. (sorry people this is one of my interminably LONG posts…)

 1.   Doctor Strange in the comics is kick-ass. He has powers that make most of the Avengers look like the Home Guard. In canon he’s so powerful he often sits alone looking through the Window of the Worlds across the dimensions, ready to step in when things so seriously wrong. (for example in the comics he sat out the Civil War saga because he knew he was too powerful to get involved; whichever side he chose would have won). He can manipulate time, harness and wield cosmic energy, create portals across dimensions and with his searing intellect has an encyclopaedic and insatiable knowledge of magic.

 2.   The MCU’s Doctor Strange is an origin story, and yes we’ve seen that before. But in a way it’s one of the seminalhero goes on a quest’ stories. Batman Begins was (probably) modelled on Dr Strange (and not the other way around) as the scriptwriter David Goyer wrote a very early DS script which was morphed into the Christian Bale film… but I digress. Stephen Strange has, in my and many others’ views, the greatest origins arc of all. His journey – physically, cosmically and emotionally, is epic. And you can’t do that without a brilliant actor, right?

 3.   Right. Benedict – whom Marvel wanted from the get-go and for whom delayed a blockbuster for a year. a year. to wait for him; and once you get used to his NYC drawl does this amazing job of being both an utter dick and also portraying the loneliness (and fear) driving his early success. He also nails the transition and the fall, and is also; thanks to BC’s emotional flexibility and openness, utterly compelling as a once great man reduced to humility and being the novice. The physical work he does in the film is impressive. And he’s not alone in being great;

 4.   The rest of the cast – some of whom getting more opportunity than others – is astonishing. For me, alongside BC, the three who excel are Chiwetel, Rachael and Tilda. Benedict Wong is wonderful and is by far the funniest. Sadly Mads gets very little to work with but he’s compelling. Whilst the casting of The Ancient One could have been handled better imv; Tilda is this amazing mix of wisdom, innocence, cynicism and childish delight. And there’s one scene with her and Benedict which I think is the most poignant in the entire MCU pantheon. It rips my heart out every time and makes me grieve for loved ones lost.

 5.   Marvel Studios know how to match the right director with the material. And choosing Scott Derrickson was genius imv. It said Marvel doesn’t want Harry Potter wand-waving magic, it wants something darker. And I was so relieved. Derrickson was a noted but still emerging horror auteur whose films; The Day The Earth Stood Still. Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose; all explored the conflicts of spirituality, the human condition, the ego, and things beyond the understanding of the logical and empirical human brain. Perfection. (plus he’d been an avid fan of Dr Strange for many many years and spent an “extreme” amount of his money in the pitch to Marvel).

 6.   The special effects weren’t just groundbreaking for Marvel, they were groundbreaking for cinema. DS was nominated for an Oscar for its sheer innovation (which also paid homage to the Ditko / Lee acid-tripping, beatnik influenced and Twilight Zone era of the DS comics). There are three great passages in the film where the special effects take you in an almost synesthetic, drug-induced voyage into this new cosmic world. And the use of mandelbrotting is groundbreaking. And how it’s used to bring the Cloak of Levitation to life is iconic. To the point the Cloak now has its own trailer on the set of Infinity War.

 7.   The reaction to this obscure character, introduced without the help of Tony Stark or other MCU crossovers; I think blew everyone away. Metacritic rates it as the 5th best MCU film, Rotten Tomatoes gives it 90%, and it made $677M globally which made it – and him – a success and a front player.  He plays a significant role in Infinity War (Benedict was on set a lot longer than any of us expected!) and he’s rumoured to be heading back for Avengers 4 in between filming Melrose. I still think there will be a sequel of sorts; I wonder if this mystery MCU buddy to Tom Holland in the Spider-Man sequel might be Stephen Strange….

 8.   And lastly – are you still awake? I’m sorry. I’ll end with this final reason why you should watch Doctor Strange. Because…. It’s pretty profound. Its themes of loss and grief, ego and humility, power and failure are beautifully done. They allow Benedict to do what he does best; to create a character who’s both intimidating and deeply fragile, And the climax scene between the hero and villain to me seems more like a Ingmar Bergman moment (on acid) than a Marvel movie and it’s iconic.

So in short? Yes I think you should watch it. :-)
