tramproject

As I mentioned here, I want to run along all of Zurich’s tram lines to avoid repetitive runs and have some fun while doing so. So far I’ve run (with completion estimates):

  • 2: Farbhof – Stauffacher, Bellevue - Tiefenbrunnen (70%)
  • 3: Albisrieden – Sihlpost (45%)
  • 4: Bahnhof Altstetten Nord – Tiefenbrunnen (100%)
  • 13: Frankental – Sihlquai/HB, Saalsporthalle - Strassenverkehrsamt (60%)
  • 14: Seebach – Schmiede Wiedikon (70%)
  • 15: Bellevue – Central (10%)
  • 17: Werdhölzli – Bahnhofquai/HB (90%)

Progress is quicker than I expected, but I have barely touched some of the most challenging lines: 6 up to the zoo, 10 and 12 to the airport, the difficult part of 13, the hilly 15… but it’s a lot of fun! I get to know the city better and better. From a public transportation perspective, that is.

I have finished my tram running project! The last run took me up to no man’s land to the end of line 9 (Hirzenbach) and the end of line 11 (Auzelg). Line 11 ends in the middle of line 12, and as I’ve mentioned already, line 12 is where Zurich is ugly.

The missing part of line 11 was only between Auzelg and the main station; the last missing part of the project was line 7 between Paradeplatz and Enge train station. I could have covered that earlier, but absent-mindedly opted to do a part of line 5 I’d done before when I was supposed to to line 7.

Which was fine, because my training plan scheduled a run long enough to fit that last missing part exactly. This is the final status, obivously all lines bold (because finished) now, added parts in italics:

  • 2: Farbhof – Tiefenbrunnen (100%)
  • 3: Albisrieden – Klusplatz (100%)
  • 4: Bahnhof Altstetten Nord – Tiefenbrunnen (100%)
  • 5: Zoo – Laubegg (100%)
  • 6: Zoo – Bahnhof Enge (100%)
  • 7: Bahnhof Stettbach – Paradeplatz, Paradeplatz – Bahnhof Enge, Bahnhof Enge – Wollishofen (100%)
  • 8: Hardplatz – Klusplatz (100%)
  • 9: Hirzenbach – Irchel, Irchel – Triemli (100%)
  • 10: Flughafen, Fracht – Löwenplatz (100%)
  • 11: Auzelg – Bahnhofstrasse/HB, Bahnhofstrasse/HB – Rehalp (100%)
  • 12: Flughafen, Fracht – Bahnhof Stettbach (100%)
  • 13: Frankental – Albisgüetli (100%)
  • 14: Seebach – Triemli (100%)
  • 15: Bucheggplatz – Klusplatz (100%)
  • 17: Werdhölzli – Löwenplatz (100%)

Because it was so much fun, I’ll wrap up the project with a few thoughts and statistics – in a few posts to come.

Tram running approaches its final stages! Yesterday was a real “finisher” as I did what was left of lines 5, 13 and 17 plus big chunks of lines 3 (almost finished now!), 6, 9 and 11. This is the current status per line (italics for new segments, bold for finished lines):

  • 2: Farbhof – Tiefenbrunnen (100%)
  • 3: Albisrieden – Sihlpost, Central – Klusplatz (90%)
  • 4: Bahnhof Altstetten Nord – Tiefenbrunnen (100%)
  • 5: Zoo – Platte, Platte – Laubegg (100%)
  • 6: Zoo – Central (35%)
  • 8: Hardplatz – Klusplatz (100%)
  • 9: Irchel – ETH/Universitätsspital, ETH/Universitätsspital – Paradeplatz, Paradeplatz – Triemli (70%)
  • 11: Bahnhofstrasse/HB – Hegibachplatz, Hegibachplatz – Rehalp (30%)
  • 13: Frankental – Sihlquai/HB, Sihlquai/HB – Paradeplatz, Paradeplatz – Albisgüetli (100%)
  • 14: Seebach – Triemli (100%)
  • 15: Bucheggplatz – Klusplatz (100%)
  • 17: Werdhölzli – Bahnhofquai/HB, Bahnhofquai/HB – Löwenplatz (100%)

Unlike my originial intention of doing Sunday’s long run along lines 10 and 12 to and from the airport, I ran along Sihl river (where no tram lines are), so these are still to be done. But there’s also a long run to be done next Sunday – perfect!

At the end stations of trams, I usually run the little loop the tracks do. When there are two lines I’m covering in the same run, I’ll run the loop twice, so I’m pretty sure some people think I must have some issues. Which, in a sense, isn’t completely wrong, but then again, I enjoy the “issues”. And the Boston Marathon won’t prepare itself, right?
