Tropical depression “Maring” (international codename: Trami) continues to dump what is described as some of the heaviest rains in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, causing floods that have killed seven, turning roads into rivers and trapping people in homes and shelters.

The rain has stopped for a while, but there is no assurance that we will see the sun shine again for the week. In fact, ‘Maring’ is expected to stay within the country’s area of responsibility until Friday.

Seeing news of Manila being flooded by Typhoon Trami/Maring reminded me of this traditional Filipino flood technique used that I’ve heard about. It is essentially a REALLY BIG hole in the ground that is filled with logs and soil to fill the large gaps. By digging the hole you aerate the soil creating spaces for the water to seep in, and together with the organic matter it simulates the organisms living in the soil so that they may decompose the logs into nutrients and create more pores and holes for the water to seep through. I can’t remember what it was called but it seems that Indonesia has a similar idea. http://goeleven.sman11bdg.sch.id/?p=33
