This Phi Phi tour by speedboat is a great way to discover some of the wonders of the Andaman Sea, and with sympathetic tour-guides and boat crew, excellent service. What to do: Phi Phi Island is, when you think about it, and extremely open-air sort of place. Just about the only form of activity that takes place behind closed doors is when your head hits the pillow. So it’s no wonder that the area abounds in exciting things to do, both on and off the island, above and below sea level. Here are some of the best activities available.
What to See: The whole of Phi Phi, with perhaps the exception of a few ugly manmade developments, is an attraction but then again it’s all relative. One of the must-do attractions is the viewpoint while others remain optional. Happily, there’s only one hard-and-fast rule when visiting Phi Phi’s attractions; don’t forget your camera.
Phi Phi Islands are popular because they represent the perfect tropical dream destination, just like being in a postcard. It may be a cliché, but white sand beaches, turquoise waters and nodding palms will always make people dream. And this is exactly what’s on offer with this tour. A dream come true, yet at affordable rates. The islands came to worldwide prominence when Ko Phi Phi Leh was used as a location for the 2000 British-American film The Beach. This attracted criticism, with claims that the film company had damaged the island’s environment, since the producers bulldozed beach areas and planted palm trees to make it look like the book, an accusation the film’s makers contest. An increase in tourism was attributed to the film’s release.

We hopped on a longtail boat in the morning, hungover as fuck. It was packed to the brim with tourists. They fed us sandwiches full of shredded carrot and onion, and we choked them back after the snorkeling kickstarted our appetites and made them almost palatable. Three rich Japanese girls sat at the helm, using life vests to keep their skin from turning browner in the sun - a sign of poverty in Asia, where whiteness is synonymous with the high class.
I fought through a swarm of hands holding iphones, relentlessly filming their experiences away, to get a view of the surreal landscape. Straight out of that Leo DiCaprio movie everyone keeps talking about here. Limestone behemoths rising out of kool-aid blue. People told me not to go to Phi Phi, that it was ruined by a flood of shitty tourists. And it is, definitely. But it was beautiful enough to make all those bad things irrelevant.
I’ve been to Phuket a number of times but this was my first time to Krabi. If you end goal is to go to Phang Nga Bay or Phi Phi, it doesn’t really matter if you started at Phuket or Krabi because they’re more or less the same distance.
This time I really wanted to see the landscape in Phang Nga Bay differently than before, so I chose to Kayak. I heard that you can kayak through the karst and caves, so I got really excited! After a ton of research, I finally chose to go to Paddle Asia. They got the best reviews (for my preference: low impact & non-mass tourism) and looks like they’re able to accommodate beginners.
We met our guide, Run, at the Old Thalane Pier and he promptly took us all to a deserted beach and get ready for our day.
We all took 2 person kayak cause we’re not confident enough to be able to this 3 hours all on our own and it’s more fun this way :) We first kayak into a lagoon and it led to a canyon where we could see stalactites.
Then we slowly made our way to the mangroves. The mangroves opened a tunnel for us to kayak through and you can see monitor lizards, birds and many other animals with a karst or cliff as your back drop. Because the mangroves disperse the wave, so the whole kayak journey was effortless.
After the mangroves, we got to a massive lagoon area that leads to another mangroves. The whole journey was just breath-taking. We found ourselves looking at the stunning view than to actually kayak.
I didn’t take much photos on this trip as majority of it was video. You can check out the video here. I highly recommend Paddle Asia, Dave, the owner has been very helpful since the day I enquire about the tour. All in all, I highly recommend kayak to see Phang Nga Bay. You get to see Phang Nga Bay in a whole different light than regular boat tours!
Celebrate Khao Pansa Day Khao Phansa Day (วันเข้าพรรษา -: wan kâo pan-săa) falls on the first day after the full moon of the 8th lunar month. Which this year is Saturday 12th July. It is the day after Asanha Bucha Day.
Khao Phansa Day means the day of entering the rains retreat. This is a three month annual retreat usually undertaken from July to October. During this period monks must stay at the same temple.
The tradition dates from the time of the Buddha, when he forbade monks to travel during the rainy season for fear that they might unintentionally harm crops or insects in the places where they walked.
It is a period for study, meditation and teaching of new monks. The monks are allowed to go out during the day but they must sleep in the same temple every night during these three months.
In earlier times, the Buddha and his disciples would spend the rains retreat wherever they were offered shelter, sometimes at the estates of wealthy benefactors. The lay disciple Anathapindika is credited with building the first permanent complex dedicated to housing monks during the three months of Vassa.
Even though the Buddha and his disciples didn’t stay there all year round, this complex was, in effect, the first Buddhist monastery. Modern day readers of the sutras may notice that the Buddha delivered many of his sermons “in the Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika’s Monastery.” The rain retreat became a time for more intensive practice. The Buddha also placed great emphasis on living together harmoniously.
In Thailand now, monks still use the retreat to meditate more intensively. Lay people will often use this period to adopt more ascetic practices, abstaining from meat, alcohol or cigarettes, for example.
Khao Phansa Day is often referred to as Buddhist Lent, as its emphasis on reflection and self-denial bear outward resemblance to the Christian Lent period (though pre-dating it by over 500 years).
It is also a time when many young Thai men ordain and join the monkhood for part or all of the period of the rains retreat. This is a traditional rite of passage for most young Thai men, and it creates valuable merit for the whole family.
Most of the activities on Khao Phansa Day are the same as those on any other Buddhist holy days. The people go to the temple early in the morning to feed the monks and make merit (Tamboon).
The two most important things given to the monks during Khao Phansa are the candles and garments worn by monks particularly the bathing robe. Although umbrellas are welcomed too.
In the Buddha’s time there was only candle light used around the temple and at the start of the rainy season the Thai people made large candles as offerings to be used during this season. Some believe that as a result of this custom, they become brighter and smarter – similar to the characteristics of the candlelight. This tradition passed on from generation to generation and it is still present today.
Most large cities in Isaan (North East Thailand) have large candle festivals and Korat is no different. It is well worth a visit although you will have to brave the crowds particularly of you go to the main procession today.
