This was meant to provide motivation, but honestly, this is more of a list of ways to make sure you get it done, rather than make yourself “motivated”. Either way, this should benefit you somehow.
In the words of Chuck Wendig, “do not fucking multitask”. Carve out a specific time to write and use it to write. Don’t try to simultaneously write and tweet and check your email. Whether it be 15 minutes or 2 hours, write, and only write.
Take breaks occasionally. You can’t just sit there and fog up your creative lens. Go outside and go for a walk. Go to coffee with your friends for an hour. Do something to relax your brain for a while. It’s the same with studying. Don’t drive yourself up the wall because you feel you’re “on a roll”. Your ideas and plans will still be there when you get back. If you begin to get frustrated or your foot starts to fall asleep, take a break.
Use a rewards system. Say, for every 100 words, you get a piece of chocolate. After eating a regular sized Hershey’s bar, you’ve got 1200 words. Go you! (I personally fine this incredibly useful.)
Have people you trust hold you accountable. Have your best friend (or partner, if you’ve got one) check in when they know you should be writing to make sure you did.
Read books like a writer. Read a shitty book and pick it apart to find what you don’t like about it. Read a good book to find what you do like. Use these reflections and apply them to your own work. Nothing helps quite like learning from other people’s mistakes and success.
Don’t get stuck in the planning stages. You may get really excited while planning a story, that huge plot twist, a minor character’s backstory, etc, but keep in mind that at some point you’re going to have to sit down and hash it out. A lot of promising writers never get past the planning stages, so in the words of my very wise boyfriend: “Just write”.
Write in places that make your creative juices flow. Get cozy in bed with your laptop open to a word document, light a few candles, make some tea, get that incense going, and write. Music really helps to get in the mood as well, and if you would like to take a look at my writing playlist, here it is, free for public consumption.
Keep your mind open to new ideas and changes to your story. Your idea will develop and evolve over time, and the beauty of writing is that you can change anything you want and there are no consequences. If you decide to completely scrap a character, remove a subplot, add one in, or change the plot but keep the same characters, you’re totally free to do so. Nothing about writing is set in stone, so stay open minded to new concepts and changes and, most importantly, criticism. (I won’t elaborate on this because I might end up making a whole other post about this topic in the future.)
As always, this is just a compilation of the tips and tricks I’ve found the most useful in my own experience. They may not help, they may help a lot, it really could go either way or somewhere in between, but all the same, I hope this proves useful to you.
hey, can you break down the differences between the adventure zone and critical role for me? i haven't listened to either and now i'm curious
Oh gosh, okay. They’re delightful but… very different approaches to the same general idea (broadcasting a D&D game), and I think the fans of one show tend to have a sort of skewed impression of the other show, so here’s my thinking.
Just the basics, to begin with: The Adventure Zone started running in late 2014, and it’s an audio-only podcast in which the McElroy brothers and their dad start a brand-new D&D campaign from scratch. Critical Role started running in early 2015, and it’s a video podcast in which a bunch of best-friend voice actors started filming the D&D campaign they’d already been playing for years at home with the same characters. TAZ is (generally) prerecorded and lightly edited down, CR is 100% live. Both have a lot of howlingly funny and surprisingly touching moments, both get a lot more intense the more you get into them, and both are good shows that are a Good Time, especially when they make you feel things you didn’t sign up for. The main canon of TAZ is currently 56 one-hour-long episodes, with new episodes every two weeks, and CR is currently 85 four-hour-long episodes, with new episodes every week. Most of the reason for CR’s absurd length comes down to (a) three times as many players, and (b) no editing.
The DMs both put a ton of work into the world, but they also have very different approaches. Griffin (TAZ) is DMing for the first time, while Matt (CR) has talked about how DMing D&D games for the past 20 years is what got him interested in acting in the first place. The world of TAZ is much more of a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid, while CR sticks more to traditional fantasy.
TAZ plays fast and loose with the rules, which can be both a delight and a frustration for storytelling reasons—for instance, until the latest arc both spell slots and HP were not really tracked, which means (a) Griffin has had to come up with incredibly creative ways of introducing risk and limitations to the game, and (b) those incredibly creative ways can start to get pretty damn brutal. The mechanics of the game feel like an imposition on the story, most of the time—it’s rare that you get a dice roll that makes a huge difference to the plot (but when you do, as in the most recent episode, it’s pretty darn cool). As a result, the biggest spanner in the works of Griffin’s plans tends to be in the form of out-of-the-box thinking from his players, which they excel at; I think there is a tendency to railroad the plot as a result, but it’s a good story and it’s well worth a little bit of elbowing to keep everyone on track. Magical items also play a huge role, with viewers of the show submitting awesome new trinkets for the heroes of the story to use/abuse/completely forget about.
Because CR tilts more towards the rulebook (although Matt gets more than his fair share of shit for homebrewing and letting things slide and defaulting to the Rule of Cool), chance plays a much bigger role in the story. Matt’s simultaneously battling some incredibly creative players and dice that seem determined to roll as dramatically as possible. Entire subplots have been wiped out by a strategic roll, and in order to be able to adapt to that on the fly, Matt has to be hyper-prepared and have a lot of possible branching points. It’s absurdly open-world, especially now that the characters have the ability to travel instantly through different planes of existence, and Matt keeps pace with a story that feels more character-led than DM-led; railroading is practically nonexistent, which means you get incredible plot developments and super-deep characterization… but it also sometimes leads to long circular conversations trying to figure out what to do next. Because the players are all actors, there’s also a lot more that’s just straight-up improv theater: it’s not unusual (especially lately) to go for verrrry long stretches of riveting conversation without anybody rolling dice (I can think of a moment where Matt could’ve just had everyone fail a charisma saving throw against an NPC but instead just straight-up charmed them all in real life with words).
I’ll put it this way: CR is a basketball pickup game between friends who’ve been playing together so long that they kind of have their own home rules going and stick to them. TAZ is out there playing fuckin’ Calvinball. Both are great fun, but if you go into one expecting the other you’re in for a bad time.
Both shows have a lot of great NPCs, although Critical Role’s format gives them a lot more time and depth to shine (there are episodes where an NPC will have as much or more “screen time” than some of the player characters). Both shows have LGBT representation among player characters and NPCs alike that, while not perfect, is generally improving as the show goes on. For me personally, one of the more frustrating things about going from CR to TAZ was going from three female player characters and a metric fuckton of extremely deep characterization for all the female NPCs to no female player characters and many great and memorable female NPCs who nevertheless don’t get too much screentime or development just because of the the structure of the show.
TAZ is pretty shaky throughout the first arc (Griffin’s fighting a bit of an uphill battle getting everyone to sit down and actually play the game, which is funny in and of itself), but things slowly start to come together and the real potential of the show becomes clear once they break the heck out of the 5e Starter Set. I think the “Murder on the Rockport Limited” arc is what started to pull me in, and it’s not until the latest arc that I’m starting to get the character development I really crave in that show. Critical Role also takes a little while to find its footing, and to me the Briarwood arc (starting around episode 24) is where the mood of the show starts to solidify, with episode 40 and beyond really pushing from “this is cool, I’m enjoying how these interpretations of fantasy tropes are sometimes kinda unusual and off-the-wall!” to “how is this the most honest and genuine character development I’ve ever seen in media what the heck is happening here”.
So yeah. TAZ isn’t total chaos with no plot or effort put into it, CR isn’t a humorless wasteland of mathematical minutiae and rigid formulaic approaches. Both shows are great fun, both are IMO in an upswing and getting better and better as they go along, and I heartily recommend them both if you know what you’re getting into. Have fun!
In 2015, the rate of new works started per day on the non-profit archive exceeded that of the older fanfiction.net, and this fan-run project is set to surpass the fastest growth of either archive in 2017.
Below the cut, I explain where these numbers come from, look more closely at the seasonal variation in each archive, and the overall pace of fanworks being posted.
They’re filming the penultimate episode when Erasmus throws a huge, shining spanner into the neat mechanism of Laurent’s show.
This close to the end, the on-camera small talk is finally giving way to more serious discussions about compatibility. Damen is meant to spend this afternoon asking each suitor in turn where they see themselves in five years, and what they really want out of life.
Erasmus is first; he sits on the edge of the couch, set at an angle to the leather armchair where Damen is enthroned, and twists his hands together. He hasn’t looked this visibly nervous in a while. Damen has obviously noticed it too, because he bats a few sillier questions at Erasmus instead of plunging straight into the heavy topics. He has an instinct for people that makes Laurent wonder what kind of easily-swayed idiot Theomedes must be, not to see how wired Damen is for leadership.
When Damen poses the in-five-years question, Erasmus runs a tongue over his lips and colour fills his cheeks. He’s the only suitor who hasn’t yet kissed Damen at least once on camera, and Laurent approved of that on the basis that it maintained tension, but now would be a good time for a kiss if one is going to happen.
Laurent moves his eyes away from Damen’s mouth.
Erasmus says, still blushing, “This is hard to say. I think you’re incredible, Damen. Really. But–”
People can’t stand the idea of Holmes and Watson being in love because it’s not in the books but they sure damn love assassin wife, crazy sister in shutter island, Redbeard is not a dog god dammit, jumping off a bulding without injuries, solving crime Bond style, Watson beating the fuck out of Holmes bc it totally happened in the books right ?
After making my way through most of the klance tag on ao3 I thought I’d share the ones that have stuck the most with me so far. honestly this fandom is a blessing, these authors are a blessing, these dumb space gays are a blessing. so in no particular order, please, have some klance;
Cheeky by rideahorse / a short and sweet oneshot that involves both kissing and incessant bickering, and honestly with this pair, what more could you ask for. rated T.
official summary: Keith pinches his eyes shut, slamming the book down again and swiveling to face Lance. “Oh my god,” he groans, standing up and crossing the two feet between them before Lance can get out a word. He grabs Lance’s face between his hands (perhaps a bit rougher than needed, but hey, he’s always wanted to slap Lance’s stupid face) and the last thing he sees is an expression of pure surprise before he leans down and presses his lips against Lance’s.It’s a peck, and it lasts a second, and then it’s over. Keith leans back, releasing Lance’s face, and hisses, “There.”
if it takes two by velvetcrowbars / Lance has a confession to make and Keith is a knight in shining armor (sorta). a well written oneshot that Lance is absolutely not going to remember in the morning. rated T.
official summary: After the Sendak attack, Keith and Lance deal with unresolved things. Whatever those might be.“Keith?”“What?” He finally says, safely slipping the piece over Lance’s head with minimal knocking against his temple. He sets the discarded parts on the floor next to the bed.“I have a confession.”
never been kissed by kairiolette / I got a pretty good laugh out of this one, Keith and Lance have a Quality Bonding Moment™ at a local alien burger joint and things may or may not get a little out of hand. not that either of them are really complaining. rated G.
official summary: “You give off the obnoxious popular vibe. The mullet, and the rap sheet, and—the fingerless gloves,” Lance replies, and barrels on before Keith can take it the wrong way. “I’m so handsome, my name’s Keith and I’m a pilot.”“That sounds more like a compliment than an insult,” Keith says slowly, a disdainful quirk to his eyebrows that only spurs Lance on. He tilts his head a bit, his bangs shadowing his face, like he’s assessing a particularly impossible physics problem. “And I don’t like that voice you’re using.”
A Fish And A Bird by Methoxyethane/ I loved this fic, adored it to be totally honest. the writing is excellent and the plot is funny while also being meaningful. could alternatively be titled “Keith and Lance take miscommunication to a whole new level and then some”. rated T.
official summary: Lance has a boyfriend. Lance does not realize he has a boyfriend. Keith, understandably, does not react well.
head to head, neck and neck, side by side by kushling / lance actually wins a spar with keith and he is so incredibly baffled that he 100% misses the 5000 implications of keith’s super massive gay crush on him. also, avatar references. definitely worth the read. rated T.
official summary: Lance and Keith both like sparring, Avatar, and each other. They have a hard time admitting it. Pidge makes fun of them. Space swords!!!
Stranded by cyborgtoaster/ keith and lance end up being both very cold and very gay, in that order. denial is rampant and i definitely snickered once or twice during this one. rated T.
official summary: On a mission gone wrong, Keith and Lance end up stranded on a barren planet during an unexpected ice storm. Left to their own devices, they have to find a way to keep warm for the night. For once, maybe they can get along and only increase their unresolved feels.
moments of silence by attemptsonwords / really well written and great character capturing. lace is super bi and keith is really really frickin gay, together they both start to put the pieces of their relationship together. rated T.
official summary: Quiet moments between two boys who spend most of their time yelling at the other.
Drive! by wolfgun / set in an earth-centric au, keith has obviously never attended a child safety course in his entire life since he thinks jumping into a strangers car and screaming “Drive!” is an acceptable escape plan. it’s like a sleepover au but better. rated T.
official summary: “C'mon, c'mon, c'mon! Don’t you know how to drive? With a car like this, you can’t tell me you just love to mosey on down the road like a goddamn geezer,” he taunted. “What is this? Just a bit of daddy’s money and mommy’s rules?”“I’ll show you geezer, mullet-head!"Au Prompt: You’re getting chased by the police and you just jumped in my car and yelled drive, wtf man (except it’s not cops because Lance’s mom would kill him for bringing home a wanted teen)
I’ve got 99 problems and you’re every single one by kitwitt / lace is so deep in denial it’s almost physically painful to witness, keith is so amazingly gay that’s almost physically painful, too. for an explicitly rated fic a majority of the (currently 4/5) chapters are more fluff then smut. well written and witty, keith is a snarky little shit and it’s great. rated explicit.
official summary: “Obviously I’m not gay.” Lance floundered, voice breaking to a higher pitch. Shiro tilted his head slightly. “But you have a crush on Keith.” … In which Lance fails to mask his attraction to a certain pilot under the ruse of rivalry, and everyone knows but Keith.
official summary: When Hunk called the Sunday before the spring quarter began, asking if he wanted to grab brunch with him, Lance said yes; and when Hunk called again, saying that his friend was joining at the last second, Lance didn’t think anything of it.Until said friend was the best sex he’s ever had.Basically Lance is a screw up and fixing this mess was probably going to kill him.
I could absolutely keep going and going and going (and going) because there are so many great klance fics floating around out there. I definitely encourage you to root around in the tag for yourself if you haven’t already. huge shout out to all the voltron fanfiction writers out there, every single one of you are in my heart. every. single. one.
thats all for now kids, tune in next time for more Quality Space Gay™ fanfiction recommendations !
I love your blog your writing is amazing. I was wondering if maybe you could write about Betty and jughead having a secret relationship because they're just not ready to tell everyone but one day Betty goes to school with a hickey and everyone finds out about their relationship.
Thank you so much! You got it!
It was the end of spring, cheerleading season was long over but the riverdale high baseball team was having their final home game, so the riverdale vixens decided to dress in their uniforms and support the team.
Spotting Betty walking down the halls in her blue and gold uniform, Veronica smiled.
“Hey vixen, forgot how good that uniform looked on you.” She winked.
Betty laughed “you’re one to talk. You were made to wear that skirt.”
Leaning up against her locker Veronica smiled at herself.
“I’ve got to say it feels good to not have to wear that turtle neck underneath our uniform, I feel free!”
“Agreed, it feels good to let my neck breathe.”
Veronica nodded in agreement glancing at Betty’s neck, suddenly her eyes were wide and she was tugging the tiny top down even more if possible.
“What the hell! Veronica! What are you doing?!”
Turning Betty’s head to look into the tiny mirror hanging up in her locker, Veronica pointed at her neck.
“What is that?!”
Finally Betty spotted the offending mark Veronica was so concerned about.
It was a hickey.
How had she not seen that?
“Oh, I must have burnt myself on my curling iron this morning! I’m so clumsy, you know that.” She said laughing nervously.
Veronica stared at her with disbelieving eyes
“Sweetie, I know a hickey when I see a hickey. That’s a hickey.”
“Veronica, that’s ridiculous it’s a burn.”
“Betty, I’m your best friend. What are you hiding from me?”
Suddenly, jugheads lazy voice entered the conversation
“Who’s hiding things?”
Both heads whipped around and Veronica reached for Jughead, pulling him towards Betty.
“Look! A hickey! Do you know who Betty’s been seeing? Because I sure don’t.”
Jugheads eyes widened as he caught Betty’s eyes.
He quickly stamped down his panic,
“Maybe it’s a burn, Betty does use a curling iron a lot.”
“Thankyou!” Betty said quickly
“You two are ridiculous. I’m gonna find out , you know I will!” Veronica said before stomping away , leaving betty and jughead alone by the lockers.
“Don’t be mad.” He said quickly
“My neck Jughead! Of all the places!”
He glanced to the heart shaped bruise, marring her skin.
And unfortunately he wasn’t able to hide his proud smirk before she caught it.
Smacking his arm
“I’m sorry okay, I got carried away. It was that damn yellow dress last night. You know I love it when you wear that thing.”
She blushed slightly remembering the events that took place in her bedroom last night.
Jughead looked around quickly, making sure no one was looking, before he placed a quick kiss on her lips.
“It’ll be fine .I’m sure no one will even notice.”
That was the biggest lie of the year.
She had already been stopped by Kevin, Cheryl, and Josie and half the football team had been whistling when she walked past commenting on the hickey.
By last period, study hall, she was thoroughly over this day, and ready to go back to wearing her sweaters.
The gang all had this period together. So they usually spent it on a table outside.
Sliding into the seat next to Betty’s , jughead slid his hand under the table and squeezed her knee.
She smiled softly at him.
“Okay” Veronica spoke up “Kevin, Cheryl and I have gone over all possible suspects regarding the case of Betty’s hickey”
“Oh my god” betty mumbled, dropping her head to the table.
Archie poked his head up from his music book
“Hickey? Betty? What?!”
Kevin sighed “well there goes my guess, it couldn’t have been Archie if he didn’t even know about it.”
Archie was now leaning over the table trying to get a look at Betty’s neck
“I’m sorry. What?! Betty what the hell?”
Cheryl pulled out a notebook ,passing it to Veronica
“I had it narrowed down to dilton doiley or trev marrow, but after speaking to them I now know that it’s neither.”
“You asked them if they gave me a hickey?!”
Veronica crossed out something in the notebook.
“Well we know it’s not anyone on a sports team, we totally would have found that out by now, and the smart kids wouldn’t be able to do that kind of handiwork If they tried so they’re out. Who does that even leave us with?” Veronica said frustrated.
Suddenly everyone’s eyes shot to Jughead who was leaning back in his seat smirking with a shrug.
“Don’t ask me.”
Veronica’s eyes widened
“Oh my god.”
Cheryl slammed her hands down on the table
Kevin nearly spit out his water
“ Total plot twist.”
And Archie was just confused
“What, what do we know?!”
Suddenly Betty smiled, reaching for jugheads hand.
“Okay, now can we please stop talking about this.”
“As much as I enjoy hearing you all talk about other guys leaving hickeys on my girls neck, I’d rather we changed topics, thanks”
Archie dropped his book on the floor with a thud.
Jughead sat up straighter
“Yeah girlfriend. Is that a problem pal?”
Archie just sat back, glaring at his best friend.
“This is total breaking news, Betty Cooper and jughead jones. We have so much to talk about. I’m sleeping over tonight.”
