Pyracks23 Top 10 Albums of 2014
I’ll be listing out my personal list for the best albums of 2014. Sorry this is a bit late. I’m pretty lazy. This years list is a lot harder because there wasn’t the huge stand outs of Kanye West and Vampire Weekends amazing albums.. For the most part all these albums are pretty close to each other in the rankings and are somewhat interchangeable.

10.  Syro by Aphex Twin

To start off the list I picked Aphex Twin’s first album in thirteen years Syro. This album was hyped so damn much with the marketing scheme he had for it and the fact that the guy is a god among electronic artists. So naturally I had to listen to it. The album overall sounds like what a computer would sound like of it was having a meltdown. What adds to that feel is the song titles too. Overall I liked it. and the last song “Aisatsana” is absolutely beautiful.

9. Singles by Future Islands

Honestly I found about this album and band later than I probably should have. Cause these guys are awesome. Obviously the star of this band is the frontman Sam Herring. With his khaki wearing and balding head look, along with the most amazing dancing during performances not to mention the death metal screams he mixes in as well the guy is easily one of the best frontman in music right now. The album is great, synths are used a lot in amazing ways. But once again it all comes back to the amazing voice of Herring.

8. St. Vincent by St. Vincent

For the record, I have a huge crush on St. Vincent. She is fucking awesome in all regards. I was never able to get super into her previous albums but this one was a different case. I feel like she really grew up into this album, and really embraced her strong sides which obviously include her wicked guitar skills and beautiful voice. She really solidified herself as a super rockstar with this album. I’m really excited to see what she comes with next after this.

7. Piñata by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

In my mind this was the first really good Hip-Hop album of 2014. I always liked Gibbs and thought that if he just had better production around him that he would be amazing, because he his flow is one of the best, easily. Yet, he just never has good production for his amazing skills. With Madlib’s amazing production skills, Gibbs found what he needed. These two guys work so well together. The album just feels amazing to listen to. Madlib’s production is some of his best I’ve heard. The same goes for Gibbs rapping. I would live to see some more collaboration between these two.

6. Atlas by Real Estate

I remember this being one of the first albums I got into in 2014. This album is just easy listening at it’s best. You could listen to it anytime. It is really great. Guitar-centered and awesome vocals.

5. So It Goesby Ratking

Probably the most underated Hip-Hop album of 2014. I saw these guys when they opened up for Run The Jewels here in Minneapolis. I honestly didn’t know about them till then. Their performance was amazing so I went home and immediately got this album. It is just a gritty album which I love. Wiki, the young MC of the group is really an amazing rapper, and a pretty cool guy at the concert too. The production by Sporting Life is easily some of the best I had heard from 2014 as well.

4. Salad Days by Mac DeMarco

Sorry, I’m starting to lose things to say about these albums. DeMarco is a sweet dude. His guitar skills are awesome and I’m a sucker for high notes. Which is almost all he does. This albums a big step up in growth and songwriting from 2. Chill Shit yo.

3. Lost in the Dream by The War on Drugs

I was really excited when this album came out. I remember streaming it on NPR a ton before they took that away. This album is truly an experience. It’s such a deep and immerse album its like you need to just sit and listen to it. It really creates its own world to live in.

2. Our Love by Caribou

In my mind the best electronic album of 2014. I was really excited for this album after hearing the single “Can’t Do Without You” It is really an amazing love themed album because it shows the good and bad parts of loving someone. Which not enough albums do.

1. Run The Jewels 2 by Run The Jewels

Finally we have my #1 album of 2014. This was the only album that I knew was going to be where it was on my list. First the production is amazing, EL-P took it to another level with this album. The whole album hits hard as hell. Lyrics wise its incredible. Its in your face, brash and just what Hip-Hop should be. “Love Again” is my personal favorite of course. The production is so dirty it matches with the incredibly lyrics of fellatio and most importantly provides the female perspective with Gangster Boo’s verse. Because as we know Hip-Hop is generally male dominated in these kinds of songs so it was refreshing to hear a female take on the topic. But the most importantly is the fact this album talks about social problems like police brutality in “Early” which as we know in 2014 was probably the biggest and most important problem we had. The album came at a perfect time in this social and political climate of America to represent Hip-Hop’s take on these issues. Overall, an amazing album. Killer Mike and EL-P are the perfect duo.

Honorable Mentions:

Wonder Where We Land by SBTRKT

Days Before Rodeo by Travi$ Scott

Vibes by Theophilus London

Rock or Bust by AC/DC

Black Messiah by D'Angelo

Once again, if you are reading this still thank you for paying attention to my opinions so much. I like making these lists so if anyone reads it, it makes it even more enjoyable for me. While making this I realized this year was actually pretty damn good for music.

If there was any typos I’m sorry bout that. I generally just go with these when I make em and don’t really pay attention. I’ll do a quick look through before I post it. Thanks again.

Janet Jackson is the ONLY ARTIST to have THREE albums with five or more Billboard Top 10 hits:

  • Control: 5
  • Rhythm Nation 1814: 7*
  • janet.: 6

* Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 surpassed the record set by brother Michael & Bruce Springsteen, by having 7 singles reach the Billboard TOP 5! This record has yet to be broken. According to Billboard, she may have extended her record to eight, as “State of the World” was a Top 5 airplay hit but never commercially released.

In addition, with the exception of “The Pleasure Principle”, EVERY single commercially released in the US from 1986′s “What Have You Done For Me Lately” till 2001′s “Someone To Call My Lover” reached the Billboard Top 10, giving Janet 24 solo Top 10 hits. 22 of these reached the Top 5, while 10 went to #1
