I have lot of trouble with the way I present myself as a trans guy because I still like wearing a lot of make up and very feminine clothing. And I know that it’s okay, but sometimes it makes me doubt myself.
But I’m still trans. I’m still a guy. Just because I wear make up and dresses doesn’t change that.
I have finally got around to making this ridiculously long list of my favorite products that I use pretty much every day! I gave as much detail as I thought fit for each product and included various pros and cons. I will not provide links since a quick Google search will give you all the information you need on where you can purchase these items. All items are split into categories to make this post more organized. I do not have any affiliate codes or links. I created this list as a way to share my most loved cosmetics and to give honest reviews of drugstore and high-end products. Your feedback is welcome and much appreciated. Without further acknowledgments, let’s get started:

My everyday makeup consists of over ten products. For some, that may be too many products for everyday but I’ve become accustomed to wearing this much makeup on a daily basis. My everyday makeup consists of a mix of drugstore and high end items. It is best to first explain my skin type before I go on. Everything I use is tailored to my skin type so that my makeup looks a certain way throughout the entire day. I have combo oily/normal skin. I’m oily in my t-zone and normal everywhere else. I don’t have any issues with dryness.
I begin with Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. I use different moisturizers for different seasons because skin reacts with the change in weather. In the winter, my skin is much drier than it is in the summer so I use a more intense moisturizer during the winter. I use the Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 in the winter and it keeps my skin from feeling tight and painful. In the summer, a moisturizer like this however, is too heavy for my combo skin. The Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion contains no SPF so I mix Shiseido’s Urban Environment Oil-Free SPF 42 with it. The Shiseido sunscreen is very sticky on its own so mixing my moisturizer with my sunscreen helps it to spread more easily. If you use it on its own, you’ll realize that it’s hard to spread all over your face and leaves a sticky residue on your hands.
I have tried a lot of my primers, but I always come back to my Body Shop Tea Tree Pore Minimizer. Once again, because I have oily skin, I tend to reach for products that do not clog my pores and helps keep oil at bay. This primer has mattifying properties and it fills in your pores. Tea tree oil is known for its disinfecting and soothing properties, a great alternative for those with acne prone skin. Tea Tree oil reduces the redness of pimples and helps to minimize them. The Body Shop has a great range of tea tree oil products. Their Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion is one of my favorite moisturizers but I haven’t had the time to repurchase it yet, so I’m sticking with my Cetaphil for now.
My current everyday foundation is the L’oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Mattefoundation in the shade 102. This is my absolute favorite drugstore foundation. It is my Holy Grail foundation. The texture is light and smooth. It says it lasts up to 24 hours. I’ve never worn it for 24 hours, but the foundation does last at least 10 hours without breaking down on me. This foundation is especially suited for those with oily skin. It keeps you matte, without looking flat. The finish is a demi-matte, so there is still dimension left to your face. This foundation has worked better for me than many high-end foundations. Keep in mind, I’m a Sephora VIB Rouge so I have tried a lot of high-end foundations.
The collection comes in 12 shades, which is not as great a selection as CoverGirl foundations, but it isn’t the worst. I used to mix shade 101 and 102 because 102 was still a bit darker than my skin tone, but I realized that mixing the foundations compromised the finish and longevity of the foundation. In order to make this foundation work for me, I add two drops of my CoverFX Custom Cover Drops in G30and mix it together with my finger. Then I dot the foundation on my forehead, cheeks, nose and chin and blend it out with my Beauty Blender.
If you’ve never heard of these drops, they are absolutely amazing. The Custom Cover Drops itself is not a foundation. It is a pigment that you can mix with absolutely anything to create a tinted moisturizer, a full coverage foundation or a colored primer. Basically, if there is skin care that you like, you can add these color drops to your skin care. It eliminates having to wear an extra layer or two of foundation on your face. All you need is two to three drops, and you’ll get medium coverage. If you want fuller coverage, use more drops. This is a God Send because I have so many foundations that I love but the color is never quite right. These drops have stopped me from throwing my foundations out.
For concealer, I use Maybelline’s Fit Me Concealer in 10 Light Sand. It is my favorite concealer from the drug store. The consistency is very light and never settles into my fine lines. If you’re wondering why I would worry about fine lines at the age of 21, it is because I have a wrinkle under my right eye from excessive rubbing over the years. I grew up as a swimmer and chlorine would irritate my eyes so I spent a lot of time rubbing my eyes. Now, I’m paying for it at 21.
For powder, I switch between a couple of powders, some drugstore and some high end, but lately, I’ve been using my new Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder and it is amazing. It reminds me of the Make Up For Ever HD Powder. The MUFE powder is a lot finer than the Laura Mercier powder but it leaves a white film on your skin whereas the Laura Mericer Powder is more of a very light beige tone. A little goes a long way with this powder, which is great because high-end products are expensive. Makeup is an expensive hobby, to be honest. I use a flat kabuki brush and stipple the powder all over my face after my foundation has set.
BLUSH, BRONZER, & HIGHLIGHT
For blush, I am using my Benefit Cosmestics Sugarbomb Box O’ Powder.I’ve been using this for over a year. This is more of a cheek highlight than a blush. It adds the lightest pink sheen to my cheeks and it is beautiful when the light hits it. It never looks heavy, but it does look a bit powdery sometimes. (However, all powdery cake face makeup can be fixed with MAC Fix+).
For bronzer, I use Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil. This bronzer comes in three shades - Milk Chocolate, Chocolate and Dark Chocolate. Since I’m so pale, I use the lightest shade to bronze and contour. I pop this in the hollows of my cheek, follow upwards around the edges of my face on either side of my eyes, on my jawline and on my hairline. I’ve tried a lot of bronzers and the Too Faced Chocolate Soleil line is one of my favorites because it isn’t orange like a lot of bronzers. Because of my skin tone, orange bronzers are very obvious so I stay away from them.
For highlight, I’m using the new Becca x Jaclyn Hill Highlighter in Champagne Pop. This just came out in stores a few weeks ago and I love it. It’s basically MAC’s Soft and Gentle but better. Soft and Gentle is a beautiful highlight but it adds too much color to my cheekbones, making my face look much darker than I actually am. It’s not to say the Soft and Gentle isn’t a great product, but it isn’t for everyone. If you’re as pale as I am, then the Soft and Gentle may not work for you. The Becca highlighter however is much lighter but still has that beautiful sheen to it. It is easily one of my favorite highlighters.
EYESHADOW, EYELINER & MASCARA
The products I use for my eyes change everyday but the colors do not. I typically stick with a very neutral eye for school and work. Lately, I’ve been using my Too Faced Chocolate Bar for my eye looks. I take the color Marizpan and pop it all over my eyelid and add depth to my eyes by blending Milk Chocolate in my crease. I deepen my eyes by adding Triple Fudge in the outer corners of eyes.
For eyeliner, I use the Dollywink Liquid Liner in black. The Dollywink liner has a brush tip so it makes it easier for me to create my wing. It is one of my favorite eyeliners. It’s dark and easy to use. It took a bit of getting used to when I first started but once I got the hang of it, I fell in love with it. I have repurchased this product at least five times.
For mascara, I use Maybelline’s Falsies Mascara in black. I opt for the waterproof formulation because my eyelashes are often weighed down by any mascara that isn’t waterproof. Waterproof formulas are much drier, helping lashes to stay up better. I never buy high end mascaras because I don’t think it’s necessary. Drugstore mascaras are amazing, so there’s no need to spend triple the money on a mascara when you can buy one that does the same thing at the drugstore.
EYEBROWS For my eyebrows, I use my Holy Grail Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Granite. Granite is more of a grey color. I have black hair so I use grey instead of brown. Makeup artists suggest using brown for your brows, even if you have black hair but I find that grey looks more natural on me than brown. I line the edges of my eyebrows with the brow wiz, then I brush the products upwards to fill my eyebrow with an eyebrow brush. I naturally have a good amount of hair for my brows, so I don’t need a lot of product. I’ll have a separate post going in detail about how I do my brows. This eyebrow pencil actually has a spoolie but as you can see, mine broke off. Because I’m horrible.
• L'oreal Infallible Pro-Matte foundation in Golden Beige
• NYX HD concealer in Beige
• Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer in Milk Chocolate
• Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown
• NYX Powder Blush in Mocha (yes I used a blush as eyeshadow)
• 2 pink, glittery, nameless eyeshadows from a 32 color eyeshadow palette by e.l.f. (I’m so sorry I don’t think this specific palette I used is on their site anymore! But any pink e.l.f. shadows will work amazingly!)
Coppery-Bronze Eyes and Coral Pink “Watermelon” Lips
Here’s a quick warm look that pairs rich copper-brown tones on the eyes with bright pink-coral lips. The cheeks are also a rose-gold just to echo the undertones of the lipstick, and the rest of the skin is kept to a “luminous-matte” finish with matte base and slightly glowy setting powder.
And yes - this eye look works for mono-lid eyes as well because the shading goes up to the socket line on the outer corners.
