Fun fact: in Afrikaans we have a weird quirk where we address someone in the third person whilst talking to them directly as a sign of respect.

E.g.: “Juffrou sê dat u vandag die toetse terug gaan gee.” (Miss says that you will give back the tests today - only that the “you” is the same Miss.)

I’m unsure of why we do this- I have a feeling it may be a Bantu influence.
