Cuban Tody | ©Mario Oltenau (Cayo Coco, Ciego de Ávila, Cuba)

A small, colorful bird with a distinctly big-headed appearance. The most brightly colored member of the genus, Todus multicolor (Coraciiformes - Todidae), has bright green upperparts with gleaming yellowish-green supercilia, yellow lores, red throat, pinkish flanks, whitish belly, and bright yellow crissum.

This species is the only member of the genus occurring in Cuba, where it is widespread across a diversity of habitats and often abundant where it occurs [source]

Why Todus mexicanus and not Todus portoricensis?

San Pedrito de Puerto Rico/ Puertorrican Tody

***Scientific name: Todus mexicanus***

Up to date investigation about THE question! shows that this name was given by an error of history and location.

But, Is this beauty from México? the answer is NO!

Is an endemic bird from Puerto Rico which means is unique. All research and strong efforts are for protecting and maintaining what is rightfully ours; part of our patrimony and culture.

Todus mexicanus/ Todus portoricensis!!!

… ahhh! that’s more like it RIGHT???

The broad-billed tody (Todus subulatus) is one of the two species of tody native to the island of Hispaniola.
It can be identified by its small size, stubby beak, ruby-red throat, and green back.
While its close relative, the narrow-billed tody is more prevalent in the higher altitude areas, the broad-billed tody prefers lower altitude habitats.
To nest, it digs into a river bank, similar to a kingfisher.

REPUBLICA DOMINICANA: 07-16 FEBRUARY 2015

The large island “La Española” (Hispaniola) comprises two countries: Haiti in the Western part, and Dominican Republic the rest.  Between both countries, they share 31 endemics.

Among them, 2 species of Todies (see pictures above of the Broad-billed). This species, locally named “Barrancoli”, is perhaps the most handsome of all the endemics species we saw.

But “el gavilán” (Ridgway’s Hawk, Buteo ridgwayi), considered a very rare endemic, and very localized, needs a special trip to the NE corner of the island.  With the help of Timoteo Bueno (who has monitered this species of hawk) we found this individual.  Later a second one came with a small lizard in its talons. A third individual was seen near Timoteo’s house at Los Limones.

More to come….!!
