Darling's 20 rules

1. If you’re afraid to fight, then you’ll never win.

2. In times of tragedy and turmoil, you’ll learn who your true friends are. Treasure them because they are few and far between.

3. Know your enemies and never become your worst one.

4. Be grateful for your enemies. They will keep you honest and ever striving to better yourself.

5. Listen to good advice, but never substitute someone else’s judgement for your own.

6. All men and women lie. But never lie to yourself.

7. Many will flatter you. Befriend the ones who don’t.

8. Never fear the truth. It’s the lies that will destroy you.

9. Your worst decisions will always be those that are made out of fear.

10. Your mistakes won’t define you, but your memories, good and bad, will.

11. Be grateful for your mistakes as they will tell you who you’re not.

12. Don’t be afraid to examine the past, it’s how you learn what you don’t want to do again.

13. There’s a lot to be said for not knowing better.

14. All men die. Not everyone lives.

15. On your deathbed, your greatest regrets will be what you didn’t do.

16. Don’t be afraid to love. Yes, it’s a weakness that can be used against you. But it’s also a source of the greatest strength you will ever know.

17. The past is history written in stone that can’t be altered. The future is transitory and never guaranteed. Today is the only thing you can change for certain. Make the most of it.

18. You can be in a crowd, surrounded by people, and still be lonely.

19. Love all, regardless of what they do. Trust only those you have to. Harm none until they harm you.

20. Never be afraid to kill or destroy your enemies. They will not hesitate to kill or destroy you.

exR | amnesia au, established relationship, sad things

When Grantaire wakes up, there’s a large folder on the bedside table labelled ‘GRANTAIRE’, he seriously needs a fucking drink, and his boyfriend is in the bed with him.

Enjolras, supplies an echo in his mind. Grantaire raises a hand to stroke down his hair fondly, and sees the ring on his finger. Perhaps not boyfriend then.

Grantaire frowns. It feels like he’s been drinking a lot again, the way memories are floating in and out of grasp in fragments, in blurs, in thoughts and smells and sounds instead of complete scenes; and yet, he doesn’t have a hangover. Just a permanent craving, these days. He reaches for the folder instead.

The first page is a letter from the boyfriend. Husband. Whatever. It details who he is (Enjolras) and who Grantaire is and where they are and a brief history of their relationships. Grantaire skips it. He remembers what it says, which means today is a good day.

The second page is a page of instructions. Grantaire reads through that, just in case.

The rest of it is a diary. The first entry was almost two months ago, and it starts, ‘R, you are a fucking idiot.’ It’s in his handwriting, and it sounds like him. There are sections highlighted. Grantaire skims through those, and he counts on his fingers how many of those memories he didn’t have today.

There are only two things Grantaire is guaranteed to remember on any given day. The first is that he has Korsakoff’s Syndrome, and the second is that he really is a fucking idiot. The amnesia isn’t cumulative. It’s not like he drank himself into oblivion and forgot everything and now he’s slowly regaining his memories; it’s more like sometimes he regains one and on the same day he might lose a different one.

Today, Grantaire writes a small ‘3’ in the margin next to the date. But then again, he’s starting to remember when Enjolras asked him to marry him even if it’s not complete, like a waft of perfume past, so he counts that as a win for today.

When Grantaire puts the folder away, Enjolras is awake, lying on his side and watching Grantaire. Grantaire leans down to kiss him. “Hey gorgeous. And who are you?”

Enjolras frowns, and pushes himself up so that he’s sitting.

“I’m joking,” says Grantaire hastily. “I remember who you are. Today’s a pretty good day. I could fucking murder for a drink though.”

“I’ll murder whoever you want as long as you don’t pick up that goddamn drink today,” answers Enjolras solemnly, and kisses Grantaire back. “Also, you made that same joke yesterday,” he adds quietly against Grantaire’s shoulder.

Grantaire bites his lip. He’s going to have to write that down so he doesn’t do it three days in a row. “Sorry.”

“Felt like deja vu,” says Enjolras lightly.

“Groundhog day,” says Grantaire, shuddering. “I remember that movie.”

Grantaire trails his hands over the familiar parts of Enjolras’s body, occasionally filing things  he likes about Enjolras away again for the second, third, hundredth time, and Enjolras curls up against Grantaire’s chest. “I wouldn’t mind that. A guarantee I’d wake up to you remembering like this every morning wouldn’t be so bad.”
