Domestic Garden Witch: Flowers in the Dark

So maybe you’re a college witch with limited space and money, limited to the one window in your dorm. Or, maybe you’re a witch without extensive backyard space who wants to start up a magical garden. Perhaps you’re a kitchen witch who wants the freshest herbs right at her fingertips.

For many witches, having a garden seems to be a bit of a no-brainer. After all, plants and magic go hand-in-hand. Plus, when thinking of a witch, it’s hard not to think of a cottage in the woods with a little vegetable garden out front. Unfortunately for the majority of us, our cottage in the woods is a tiny flat, and our garden out front is a windowsill with limited space.

This is when it comes time to embrace your craftiness and bring your garden indoors! Not only does it place your garden in a convenient location, it also allows you to freshen the air, recycle what would otherwise harm the earth, and embrace your witchy green thumb!

For the Nocturnal Witch

One of the things that plagues students and non-students alike in this fast-moving modern world is the fact that it’s not always easy to get into the garden during the daytime. We often miss out on vibrant blooms, sweet smells, and the presence of birds and butterflies on all but our days off. And if you’re like me, you have a tendency to be a bit nocturnal as it is. But there are gardens that can be enjoyed in the evening and at night, and they tend to be rather gorgeous!

Moonlight gardens are ideal for the nighttime witch who wants to make use of the moon in her practice. Pale flowers seem to glow in the light cast by the moon and stars, while somewhat reflective leaves do the same. Certain plants only bloom at night and in the evening, or will intensify their scent at night in order to attract moths and night birds.

The usefulness of such a garden is more than just providing a pleasant aesthetic in the night. Moonlight gardens are particularly helpful for faerie tradition and those devoted to lunar deities. They also serve as a reminder that even in the dark, life thrives.

Select plants that bloom in the late evening or at night, or which otherwise have pale flowers that stay open late. Amaryllis, summer snapdragon, flowering tobacco, and angel’s trumpet all provide late blooming flowers and nighttime scents, that help add a bit of magic to a midnight stroll or a garden meal.

Consider ways in which your garden can glow at night, peppering these nighttime flora throughout the otherwise daytime garden. And take into account the purpose and intent behind your garden. Select flowers and scents that are ideal for nighttime fae, or if you are cultivating a dragon garden, go for bold blooms and foliage that show the strength of nighttime beauty.

Aside from the aesthetic and intention of a moonlight garden, it does have a more spiritual purpose. Nighttime gardens are a way to help us connect to the “dark side” of ourselves. We may be vibrant and beautiful in the side we most often show, but our darker and quieter selves are beautiful in their own rights. A garden like this helps us to display that part of ourselves while also interacting with the natural vibrancy that comes even when the sun is out of sight.

May all your harvests be bountiful! )O(

Dragon Age Inspired Perfumes - coming soon!

The first three will be scents inspired by Dragon Age Solas…because Solavellan Hell is inescapable. Each scent ties to the other to tell a story but each is distinctly different.

Solas - Unisex leaning towards masculine. Campfire smoke and cedar wood surround him from tending the fire on long nights traveling with the Inquisition. His books and his armor smell of aged, worn leather. Fragrant cloves with a hint of cinnamon mixed with wisps of amber and earthy moss cling to him from sleeping in the ruins of Thedas, imagining ancient worlds as dreamers of the fade do. The faint wisps of earthy chocolate and black tea swirl about him, luring in admirers who are drawn in by his mysterious stoicism and sharp wit, who may find warmth and sadness in his kiss.

Fen'Harel - This scent is a bold unisex scent that leans towards the masculine. Fen'Harel is based on a deep, earthy chocolate and sensual amber base with the sweet smokiness of vanilla tobacco and warmth of worn leather. Cedar & dogwood trees lend an elegant yet sharp contrast to the bold spices of ginger, cinnamon and clove. Adding to the dark mysteriousness of this fallen Evanuris are hints of sweet, spiced mocha mingling with bitter, dark chocolate. Fen'Harel is sexy, confident and bold.

Dread Wolf - Unisex leaning towards masculine. Travel the Dinan’shiral with Fen’Harel as the Dread Wolf through dark, moss-covered mysterious woods and abandoned elven ruins. Traces of faded shrine offerings to the fallen Elven God of Rebellion, delicate white flowers and tobacco incense, lie beneath the tingling electrical tendrils of the fade that cling to his ethereal form. Rich notes of dark chocolate and whispers of smoke are reminders of the man he was and serve as stark reminders of better days and those he has left behind.

Stay tuned!

Balsamorhiza sagittata “Arrowleaf Balsamroot” Asteraceae

Tobacco Root Mountains, MT
June 3, 2016
Robert Niese

I recently acquired a new phone with a decent camera! This was especially fortuitous last week when I managed to accidentally stumble upon this huge late bloom of balsamroot without my DSLR handy. These hillsides were still completely blanketed in blooming B. sagittata, while Missoula’s hillsides have all faded in the past few weeks. And for the record, this phone camera has more megapixels than my first DSLR… Weird.

@xnavybluestar It’s a tea cozy. At first I considered wild roses, like the five-petaled wild prairie rose, but roses have heart-shaped petals. Plus, something seemed off about the stem arrangement, how some of the flowers droop, and the flower shape, in general.

My best guess is some type of nicotiana, the flowering tobacco. It’s kind of hard for me to tell from that picture. Tobacco leaves get really big, but the leaves near the blooms are much smaller, and the general leaf shape is about right. It’s in the nightshade family just like tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplants, petunias, and the infamous belladonna (deadly nightshade). If this is correct, then the symbolic meaning is healing and purification. Perhaps Tanaka sharing the truth about the twins will eventually lead to emotional healing and cleansing… if not for them, perhaps for himself. It’s hard to take something like this to your grave, after all.

We can also consider the common symbolism of five-petaled flowers: sincerity, aspiration, faith, surrender, and devotion. But to what end? Where does his devotion lie… with real Ciel or with the earl? (I predict he’s on the earl’s side.)

Okay so I have a headcannon that Thanatos smells like smoke and tobacco flower, and that he's actually warm and kind?? He's only a dick to those who can't accept fate?? And also to the gods because they probably don't invite him to parties and stuff. I'd invite him. I'd bake him his own cake. Or muffins. Do you think he'd like lemon poppyseed?

obvs he’s kind,, he not just the god of death but non violent death and he probably doesn’t get invited to a lot of parties bc a lot of gods and mortals don’t like him but seriously,, it’s not his fault, everyone has to die (also I don’t know abt him but I don’t mind some lemon poppyseed)

Ancestor Offering

Patriotic holidays have never meant much to me as a black person with a lot of Native and Japanese in my family tree. While others were celebrating by grilling up dead animals and setting off explosives, I would sit with my great grandmother and talk about how she grew up, working on plantations in Texas and maneuvering through society as a black woman. It was interesting. Much more interesting than the false pride perpetuated by splashing red white and blue dye on everything and jacking up the price.

Anyway, on “holidays” like this, I spend my energy elsewhere. Today I’ll be giving an offering to my ancestors who were driven out of their land by genocide and imperialism, to my ancestors whose backs were the foundation upon which this country was built, my family whose blood is mixed with the soil beneath the White House.

• Biodegradable package (I use a toilet paper roll)

• Onyx chips

• Alfalfa

• Black eyed peas

• Apple core

• Angelica

• Dried flowers

• Tobacco (from a gutted cigarillo)

• Orange skins

• a poem

• needle and thread

• sigil

Stuff all the ingredients in the toilet paper roll, seal it by folding in the ends and stitching it closed. Draw the sigil on it and activate it by reciting the poem. Bury it, preferably somewhere of historical or family significance (if I was home I would have buried it at my great grandmother’s house, but since I’m at school still I might go for the oldest building on campus.)

When I have more space I plan on establishing a permanent ancestor shrine, which will be absolutely decked out on days like this where my soul feels heavy and the air burns.

My patriotism resides with those deemed less valuable by this countries’ backwards ideals. I just hope they’ve found peace.

Stunted by vole damage, rather than towering over the grasses in August as they will, my Lobelia cardinalis are all alive and blooming but rather hunkered in the garden scape, viewable up close when you stand over them.  Still this red is a magnet to the eye and hummingbirds take notice.  Here with a similarly hunkered globe thistle with some feverfew, a cerise flowering tobacco and red yarrows.
