to photograph after running and before work

Imagine long distance with Chris.

A/N: Hello, this is Part 1 of Chapter 2 - Little Ways Away. Now I know I’m jumping into the next chapter of the mini series, but I just don’t have inspiration to write anything else. This chapter’s going to be a bit of an emotional ride, so there’s my little heads-up. You can read the related mini series, and the first chapter of this spin-off here: (Mini-series - Masterlist; Mini Series Spin-off, Chapter 1 ‘Unexpected Reader’ - Masterlist)

Ava smiled when she heard your phone ringing from her bedroom; the set ringtone told her that Chris was finally calling. You’d been waiting a while for his daily phone call now, a mishap on set pushed filming back a little which was why he was late. It’d been a rough couple of months for you with Chris being away, business picking up at the Italian restaurant where you worked part time, and your school’s workload piling on. It was almost suffocating, everything that was going on in your life.

As it turned out, that week you took off from school to go spend some time with Chris was a terrible idea; you got back and found yourself overwhelmed by everything you missed out on. Two months later, you felt like you were still trying to catch up. But that was the thing, you just felt that way because it was all in your head. It was always all in your head, which was why your mom, your best friend, and your boyfriend were always so worried about you; you were too much of a perfectionist to give yourself a break. You were an incredibly intelligent and diligent student who was ahead of the class despite being in Boston, but your mentality after returning back to Los Angeles without your boyfriend ruined your stride. So here you were; overworked, sleep deprived, and stressed beyond belief.

So Ava was glad to hear ‘Under The Sea’ coming from your phone, she knew you’d benefit from hearing from your sweet, loving, and reassuring boyfriend. Up until Chris came along, your mom and her were the ones to reassure you. With them, it didn’t always work- you’d still doubt yourself and let your anxiety chew away at your brain. But with Chris? He had a way with you that no one understood, it was like he had the handbook; he always knew what to say and when to say it. It was sickly sweet, and it was proof that soulmates do exist.

Ava waited a while and felt her eyes narrow when the song didn’t stop playing. She closed her MacBook screen then walked outside, sighing when she found you asleep at the dining room table with Dodger at your feet. You were surround by your textbooks, assignment notes, class timetables, work schedules, and other bits and pieces. Ava guessed you were trying to plan out your week again and fell asleep after overwhelming yourself. It was typical Y/N, every Sunday evening you’d sit and plan your whole week like life was just going to do what you wanted it to. She walked over and held a finger up to her lips when Dodger looked up at her, whining slightly. She gently pried your phone out of your hand; breath held when you stirred. She let out a quiet sigh when you remained asleep and answered the call, walking a distance away before she spoke because the last thing she needed was to disturb your much needed rest.

“Um…Hello?” Chris’ voice came through sounding confused at the lack of your chirpy greeting; you always answered with “oh Evans, my Captain. To what do I owe this pleasure?” Always, every call, without fail- unless he caught you while you were half asleep then it wasn’t so chirpy and coherent. “Sweetheart,” he chuckled softly, “are you there or is this your cute butt I’m talking to?”

“This is actually her cute best friend you’re talking to,” Ava quipped and Chris chuckled. “Sorry, Cap, but your girl’s passed out at the table.” Ava heard Chris sigh and began to explain to him what he already knew had happened. “It’s Sunday so she-”

“Overwhelmed herself by planning her week again,” Chris finished for her and Ava noised confirmation. “God, I leave her for two months,” he commented with a weary chuckle. “Other than her usual Sunday activities, how’s she doing? I feel like I have to ask you because she’s not going to tell me the truth about anything bad. Every time I ask how she’s doing, she says she’s fine but- if she’s falling asleep while planning her week, things must be a little chaotic.”

“A little, she’s stressed. But-” Ava looked over at you with a small smile; she wished you’d let up a little. “When is she not?” Chris nodded in agreement, a weary eye roll was used. “But she’s okay, I mean- she’s a tough nut to crack.” Both your best friend and boyfriend chuckled at that because it was true; they’d seen you persevere through so much. “Dodger and I’ve got her sorted, don’t you worry.”

“Thanks, Ava.”

“I’m going to have to hang up on you though, I don’t want to wake her up. She really needs her sleep, she asked for an extra shift at the restaurant and that’s in an hour so- Let her sleep?” Ava made it sound like a question, but it was more of an order; Chris said nothing because he knew what his options were. “I’ll tell her you called so she can-”

“What time is it?!” You shot up from your quick ‘rest-of-the-eyes’, worried you were late for work. You scrambled for your phone then looked up and saw it in Ava’s hand. “Is that Chris?” You asked and she nodded, walking back over to pass the call to you. “Hey, sorry.” You said into the phone, then mouthed a “thank you” at Ava, who nodded and went back into her room to give the two of you some privacy. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I’ve just been really tired lately.”

“There’s really no need to apologize, sweetheart,” he told you. You held the phone to your ear with your shoulder as your hands started to fiddle with the pieces of paper in front of you. “You’re busy, I get it and it’s fine. I just want you to take care of yourself, please.”

“Yeah, the weather’s been lovely,” was your response because you didn’t actually process anything Chris said to you. You were too preoccupied, scribbling all over your planner to listen and respond accordingly. “A little warm, but perfect for my afternoon walks with Dodger.”

“Step away from the table, Y/N,” he instructed in a firmer tone and you found yourself dropping the pen you had in your hand. You took the phone back in your hand as you stood up and walked over to the couch where you couldn’t fiddle with anything; Dodger followed, settling by your feet. “How are you, really?” He asked, surely with furrowed brows of deep concern. “I know you don’t want me to worry, but lying to me- that’s even more worrying.”

“What did I lie to you about?”

“Every time I call and ask about you, you tell me you’re fine-”

“And I am-” you interrupted.

“I just talked to Ava and she tells a different story,” he cut you off and you huffed, wishing your best friend would just keep your struggles to herself. “What’s going on? What’s got you so stressed out? It can’t be school, you’re doing so well.” You sighed because you wished you knew. “What can I do to help? Ava said you’re asking for extra shifts, do you need-”

“I don’t need your money, Chris,” you stopped him before he could offer and he sighed. “I’m fine, honestly,” you let out a laugh to lighten the mood. “I’m just- I miss you and not having you around is affecting me a lot more than I thought it would. So don’t worry, I’m fine. School’s great, work’s good, my financial situation is perfect so- don’t worry about me, okay?”

“That’s like telling water not to be wet, darling,” he chuckled and you smiled. “You promise you’ll tell me if something’s up?” You nodded, 'mm-hm-ing’ your response. “That you’ll keep things honest between us?” Another 'mm hm’ left your throat. “That you’ll ask for money if need be?” He winced as he said that because he knew he was trying his luck; you were one of those 'make-my-own-way’ girls. “Y/N?” He quizzed when he heard nothing come from the other end.

“No,” was all you said.

“I can afford to support you,” he reminded you.

“And I can afford to make my own way,” you retorted.

“I know,” he sighed. “I’m just reminding you, in case you get sick of working while studying.” You smiled because he reminded you every chance he could, and while you did appreciate his offer- you couldn’t take it. You knew how it would look and you didn’t want it to look like that, perhaps when you were his wife and not his nineteen year old, student girlfriend. “Are you sure you don’t need anything, baby? Can I at least pay for Dodger? He is living with the two of you, I can-”

“Baby, no,” you chuckled, reaching down to pat your boyfriend’s cute dog who you were more than happy to support for nine months. “Right now, all I need from you is your maximum effort to make Infinity War absolutely amazing.” He chuckled softly, nodding. “Then I need you to come home to me and Dodger because we miss you,” you felt your eyes well as you told him that.

“I miss the two of you too,” his own eyes watered as he reached for the Polaroid photograph he kept on his desk in his trailer. The photo was of the three of you, the morning after you got together; you had a copy too which you kept in your planner. “I’d count the days, but that’s just going to make us both sad.”

“Yeah,” you chuckled with limited humor.

“I’m going to let you go,” he said and you felt yourself sigh. “You need some rest before you go to work,” he explained his leave and you nodded in agreement, running a hand through your hair. “I’ll call you tomorrow and have an actual conversation, okay?”

“Okay,” you nodded.

“I love you,” he ended the conversation like he always did, smiling despite how much his heart ached for you. He wished he could be there with you, hold you and tell you things were going to be okay because you clearly needed that. You lied about being okay, and he knew you were lying, but you were going to work and he didn’t want to put you in a bad mood by calling you out. He was going to save that conversation for another day, when you didn’t have classes or work to go to or worry about.

“I love you too,” you responded then stayed silent until you heard the dial tone. He hung up and you did the same, putting your phone aside. You sighed and buried your face in your hands, only looking up when you felt Dodger nudge his head into your leg. “How do you do it, Dodger?” You asked the pup, cupping his furry face in your hands. “How do you survive without Chris for months on end? Because it’s hard, like- it’s really fucking hard,” you chuckled to stop yourself from crying. Dodger licked your face when you bent over to kiss his forehead, making you smile. “Yeah, I know I’ve got you and Ava.”

Nine months; two down and seven to go.

Part 2

i’m just saying, the fact that lena calls kara a friend already probably means they’ve talked to each other more than just what we’ve seen

and i’m just saying, if i’m remembering correctly, Lena was on the cover of CatCo magazine. That means there was a photoshoot (…..and if i’m not remembering right, well. she’s an attractive, young, female CEO of a multi-billion dollar company, who CatCo just did an article on. there’s a photoshoot somewhere) . And clearly Lena knows exactly where Kara works. like even knows which floor and the building is huge. also the photoshoot may very have been in the same building so imagine Lena done to the nine’s and she’s kinda bored and wants to see her favorite journalists so she texts kara to come down during her lunch break don’t worry she’s ordered takeout and poor kara this is pre-gala so she hasn’t actually seen???? lena in “dressed to kill” clothes???? really???? not like That and with professionals working on her hair and makeup.

and oh no she’s smiling at kara like her entire face goes from ‘i’m going to feed you your arm with a spork” to “this winter has lasted for over 100 years and you’re the first warm ray of sunshine in spring” lena just looks so happy to see her and oh no lena has potstickers

listen lena now has a new goal in life :for kara to look at her the way she’s looking at the plate of potstickers in lena’s hands and just the fact that this is what makes kara look at her like she’s the second coming of jesus–and sure she’s been on the receiving end of that look plenty of time, the luthors have the influence of kings but this time, it’s not because of power or technology or gold or jewels or a political favor. it’s because of pot stickers. and poor lena those noises kara is making as she eats them should be illegal ok they stopped for lunch because the photographer was trying to get her to give them her best “seductive/powerful” look and it just wasn’t working she knows this isn’t a waste of time or anything, it’s necessary for her image but listen she’s very busy ok she has a multi billion dollar company to run, along with the r&d department because she’s a damn genius and that she probably has enough paperwork they actually need to shovel it into wheelbarrows

but after hearing kara make those noises oh what do you know, she has no problem with getting the look the photographer wants, much to his relief. he later gushes about the difference in emotion from before lunch to after and guess what–the entire photoshoot she was looking at kara

honestly like. the entire time is literally that line “Lightning strikes every time she moves/and everyone’s watching her/ but she’s looking at you”

lena has the focus and attention of every single person in that room–but she only had eyes for the for the girl who tries so hard to go unseen. kara’s a horrible liar but she’s usually so good at fooling people–listen, Red!K kara didn’t come out of nowhere.

but it’s too late. lena’s seen her, and she’s enraptured. and that’s why there are potstickers, of all things, at her very elegant and high society gala.

now you've got me thinking of a sailor moon/mystic messenger crossover and in which case i nominate zen as sailor venus and jaehee as sailor jupiter

✿ omg Zen is absolutely sailor venus. i can also see Jaehee as sailor uranus but let’s call her Sailor Jupiter for now.

Yoosung

  • sailor moon WAS THERE ACTUALLY ANY QUESTION ABOUT THIS
  • addicted to honey buddha chips
  • always sleeping in class
  • screams when he has to fight people
  • tries not to cry
  • gets really good at Throwing Things
  • always whining about how he’d rather be playing LoL until character development happens and he gets Serious

Zen

  • SAILOR VENUS OMG
  • the best at posing
  • i also briefly considered him for tuxedo mask too but zen in seifuku won out
  • his one weakness is that the bad guys can get him while he’s monologuing about Love and Justice.

Jaehee

  • Sailor Jupiter
  • too stressed
  • she doesn’t mean to get into fights but she can’t stand the weak getting bullied and it just… HAPPENS…
  • obsessed with honoring the memory of her parents, and that gives her the drive to perform her sailor scout work.
  • the scariest when she speaks very calmly and in a low voice

Jumin

  • sailor neptune
  • rich and pretty
  • probably gay
  • has given up everything in pursuit of his work as a sailor scout, including his emotions
  • sophisticated but hard to get along with
  • only V really seems to understand him.

707

  • sailor mercury
  • he starts off the series being like how Vanderwood described him - reserved. serious. works way too much.
  • later with everyone’s help he opens up into being bright, fun, happy Seven.
  • frequently laughs about how ridiculous the villian’s outfits are.

V

  • sailor uranus
  • probably gay for jumin
  • Had dreams of being a professional photographer before the… sailor warrior thing happened….
  • Very charming and flirty, but is extremely reluctant to work with people other than Jumin.
  • always thinks he knows best.

Saeran

  • sailor saturn
  • except not sweet. or nice. just full-on weird, distant, and angry.
  • his whole… rebirth/massive destructive powers things makes relating to other people very difficult.
  • wait does that mean jumin and v end up adopting saeran
  • that…. would actually be pretty fitting.

Vanderwood

  • one of the cats.
  • probably luna.
  • just.
  • fuck this shit, man, he’s just trying to do his job, but he’s always running after this idiots anD GODDAMMIT IT YOOSUNG JUST FIGHT THE BLEEPING ENEMY
  • being Vanderwood is Suffering.

MC

  • tuxedo mask.
  • shows up to look pretty then fucks off.
  • do you even do anything.
  • flirts with everyone.
  • charms everyone.
  • roses everywhere.
  • comes with your own shoujo background.

I had as a guest lecturer on my course a famous photographer who worked once with 1D before, 2011-2012 I think (it's a B&W picture, they're all running and H&L are next to each other,Louis has braces and Harry a bow tie). After the lecture I went to him and asked what's like working with them. He said the guys were really nice, but their team was a complete nightmare. I wonder how many opportunities to work with amazing people they missed because their team was awful.

finny for the headcanon pls

Realistic Headcanon: Despite ‘blood’ on his hands, Finny is still a rather innocent character. He’s happy with his ‘home’ and the others servants as his ‘family.’

Hilarious Headcanon: Finny likes to carry Ciel around the grounds sometimes and run as fast as he can. He thinks the sound he hears is the wind whistling, but sometimes it’s Ciel - screaming.

Heart Wrecking Headcanon: Finny has no memories before the facility where he was held, and those memories often cause him nightmares. He used to crawl under the bed after those horrible nightmares trying to hide from the doctors and constant pain.

What Would Never Work in Canon But I’d Like to See: While looking at some old family photographs, it’s revealed there was a child between Lizzy and Edward - a long lost brother was kidnapped. At some further research, it’s discovered that Finny is that brother, and he is taken in by the Midfords who love and care for him.

awkward, not shy

y’all it’s okay to portray characters however you want in fanfic, it’s fanfic and that’s your story

But can we please stop calling the canon interpretation of Marinette’s character shy? I see a lot of those comments in the reblog tags of some of my meta text posts and I’m honestly not seeing where it’s coming from.

The way she acts around Adrien is awkward, not shy. The two are not mutually exclusive, but they are not the same thing.

Homegirl is not shy by any stretch of the imagination!!

She laughs in Chloe’s face and tells her she has no taste after Chloe insults her uncle’s cooking.

In the design competition, she confidently stands up for her own design after Chloe steals it, and calmly points out how she can prove that she’s the real designer. No stuttering whatsoever, no nervousness.

She runs for class president, gives a hell of a speech, and she’s comfortable and poised in that position.

She leads a fucking expedition into the principal’s office for the express purposes of deleting a bad class photo and then after realizing it was a bad idea, uses her powers of persuasion to go right up to the photographer and cajole him into spending even more time with a bunch of teenagers for free after working the whole day, and he goes for it.

She’s obviously had people crush on her before because she’s totally comfortable with Nathanael’s crush and actually finds it sweet, not intimidating or overwhelming. She knows exactly how to handle it.

In fact, when it comes to things like flirting, she’s a pro. She flirts back hard every time Chat Noir flirts with her! Actually, she’s even better at it than him. In the Dark Cupid episode, she’s not nervous about having to kiss him on the lips, she knows exactly what to do, and tries to go in for the kiss at multiple angles. And when she finally gets the chance, she literally grabs his face and pulls it towards her. That is a pro-level kiss.

You could argue that being Ladybug gave her that confidence, but I disagree. Tikki gives her super strength and superpowers and amplifies her inherent personality traits, but she doesn’t change anything about her basic character. As Tikki says, Marinette is Ladybug with or without the mask. (Same goes for Chat Noir, but that’s a topic for another post)

So yeah, she’s not shy. Not shy at all.

But what about the weird way she acts around Adrien? Isn’t that shy?

Nope! No, it’s not. It’s simply her being awkward and silly. It’s her being a normal teenage girl who acts like a fool in front of her crush. Like a lot of us do, whether we are shy nor not. It doesn’t make her shy.

When Marinette is in front of Adrien, Marinette gets tongue-tied, she talks too much, she stammers, blabbers nonsense, or generally makes a fool of herself. She leaves embarrassing voicemails and makes ridiculous faces (because she’s very expressive)

Everything about Marinette’s interactions with Adrien involves outward expression and a very clear display of her feelings, even though Adrien’s totally oblivious about the whole thing. And it’s all because she’s got A LOT OF FEELINGS and DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM. She’s excited and reactive. None of that reads to me as shy.

But you know who does actually read to me as shy? Adrien. He reflects, he waits. He daydreams and he writes poetry. He waits for the right moment to confess to Ladybug and when that gets all fucked up and she interrupts him to apologize for kissing him, he’s completely flustered and doesn’t even realize what she’s actually saying to him because he’s trying to confess and the moment is lost and his ears droop as Ladybug flies away into the horizon. But then he gets her poem, and hope springs anew!

And it’s so sweet, because he is so shy and hopeful and those earnest sentiments are the foundational undercurrent to his flirtatious overtones whenever he interacts with Ladybug.

So yeah. You couldn’t convince me in a million years that Marinette, as she is written in the show, is shy by any stretch of the imagination. Awkward af? Yes, absolutely. Obsessive to the point of seriously needing some chill? For sure, and I love it. But shy? Nahhhh.

Love contract >> Suga, You (Part 4)

Part four is here guys~ I hope you will enjoy it ^_^

Part 1 | 2 | 3

His phone started to ring out of nowhere, so loud and annoying. Suga closed his eyes tightly, before opening them slowly. His vision was hazy as the pain shot in his head.

“Ouch!” Suga winced reached for his phone that was over the coffee table. “Hello.”

“I want to call you for once and not to find you busy or sleeping.” A familiar male voice started.

Suga could recognize his friend’s voice. His hand reached for his head as it clenched around his hair. He shouldn’t have had drunk when he had work early. “What time is it?”

“Lazy as always. How would I know?” He said a matter of fact. Probably the time there was different. Suga’s eyes shifted to the lock over the wall and almost jumped from his sleeping position. It was eight thirty.

“Sh*t.” Suga cursed, stumbling to stand on his feet. He needed to get ready for work immediately. “What do you want?”

“Y/N.” He said and Suga froze in his place, his feet stuck to the floor as if there was a glue over it and his heart sank deeper.

“What about her?” Suga managed to say, shrugging all what he felt a second ago.

It’s here. It’s here! I’m very happy with this part. It went exactly how I wanted it too. A little insight into Harry. A big jump in time but unless we wanted a full novel, it was necessary.

A few things. I’m not big on switching POV’s unless I really feel like the story needs it, so you won’t be seeing any Harry POV’s in this story. I’m sorry if that is disappointing, but I really think this story doesn't need it. I like seeing it through y/n eyes. Also, I hope to have the next part up in a few days, but I am learning not to make promises. We had a rough week and I feel like I let my readers down by being late. Just know it’s in the works and coming as soon as I get it done.

All the Love,

Part 1    Part 2

NYC.

Another new adventure, another new chapter. After a few months of living with my sister in Manchester, I finally settled into Stage 3. Jamie has named this stage the Fuck You, I’m Too Good For You Anyway stage. After picking myself up of the metaphorical floor, I put my nose in the air and threw myself into my work. I reached out to my contacts and took any job I was offered. Before, I usually stayed in or near London, but in the last two years, I have taken jobs all over the world. I have traveled from Paris to LA and just about everywhere in between.

This is the first time I have been to NYC. I’m no stranger to big cities as I have lived in London since I was 17. I had picked up a few gigs with MTV. They had some photographers on staff but they needed some extra. Having MTV in my portfolio looked good.

I took the elevator up to the offices after getting squared away with security. I was meeting with the editor of their online publications and the staff I was going to be working with over the next few weeks.

The editor was a lot younger than I expected, as well as most of the staff. She was giving me a tour of the offices when I suddenly spotted a familiar face. I wondered if I could turn around and run without causing a scene. Before I could even take a step away, our eyes met.

“Y/N!” Gemma Styles jumped up from the desk she was leaning on. “Oh my gosh. How are you?” She rushed over and was pulling me into a hug before I could say anything.

“I’m great.” I returned her hug. “How are you?” The awkwardness between us wasn’t as strong as last time since so much time had past.

“I’m good, good. What are you doing here?” She gestured to the offices around us. The editor had to take a call, so she left me in the capable hands of Gemma.

“I’m picking up some work here for a few weeks. I could ask the same of you?”

“I have an opinion blog on their website. I don’t usually come to the offices but sometimes I come in for meetings.” She explained. “You’re here for a few weeks? We should really catch up.” I nodded in agreement. I always got along with Gemma and I missed the friendship we had shared.

“I have a shoot tonight that I picked up since I am in town, but maybe we could do coffee tomorrow morning?” I offered.

“It’s a date, lady!” We exchanged numbers and set a time.

It’s been over two years since I had last seen Harry, but I still missed him. I know it was silly to long for a relationship that really never was even a relationship, but he has something special about him. There is this magnetism that just draws you to him. I followed his career and loved everything they had done recently. When Zayn left the band, I felt the loss for them. I knew how close the guys all were. I loved the album that just dropped a few months prior.

Seeing Gemma brought all those feelings back up to the surface. I had moved on, I truly had. I picked up the pieces of my broken heart and made something bigger out of my life. I pursued my dreams and I was getting jobs that I only dreamed of before. I was a name within the industry, which was nearly unheard of at my age. I was proud of what I had accomplished, but there were times when I was lonely as hell. I didn’t have that person to call at the end of day. I didn’t have the one person to tell my stories too. Yes, I had my sister. I called her often and told her about all the places I had been and people I was meeting. A sister isn’t the same, though. I wanted love, but the way I had spent the last two years almost always on the go didn’t really lend itself to starting a lasting relationship. I was ok with that, most of the time.

Coffee with Gemma was a lot less awkward than I was expecting it to be. We fell into conversation easily. She caught me up on her life and boyfriend. They had been living together for a year now and she was hoping he would give her a ring soon.

“I’ve been following your career, you know. It’s amazing everything you have done in the last few years.” She told me.

“Thank you. I am really proud of my work.”

“As you should be.” She stated loudly while playfully hitting the table between us. I laughed with her.

“It’s not too hard to follow my work. I’m a bit of an instagram junkie.” I knew she followed me and I followed her in return. I used it mostly for professional purposes. I posted about most of my major photo shoots and sneak peek behind the scenes when I could.

“No, it isn’t.” She smiled softly at me. “You really threw yourself into it, didn’t you?”

“I did. When I was staying with my sister, I read this book she had. It was about building character through conflict and struggle. This one line really stuck out for me. ‘When something happens to you, you have two choices in how to deal with it. You can either get bitter, or get better.’  After everything that happened with Harry, I was feeling really bitter. I pour my heart into someone who didn’t feel the same. It was easy to fall into being bitter. But that line stuck a chord in me. I didn’t want to live bitter. So, I got myself as many jobs as I could and worked on getting better. I wanted to be better than I was before; better than the girl who was afraid to branch out of London. I needed to be better than that girl who was worried about not being home when he wasn home incase he got tired of waiting. I am worth waiting for and I needed to remind myself of that.” I’m really horrible about this word vomit thing. It was easy to forget that Gemma was Harry’s sister and to just fall into a friendly conversation with her.

“I’m really happy for you.” She touched my arm and smiled brightly at me. I opened my mouth to thank her again but we were interrupted.

“Ohmygosh! Your Gemma Styles.” A young girl had stopped in front of our table. Her eyes were wide and she looked shocked.

“Yes, I am.” She stood to greet the girl. “Would you like a picture?” Gemma asked. The girl nodded quickly and pulled out her phone. As Gemma and the girl exchanged a quick conversation, her friend was studying me. I was feeling a bit uncomfortable. There were only a handful of pictures of Harry and I that made it to the tabloids and we were never portrayed as more than friends. Still, I got an occasional fan that recognize me, but not as much in recent years.

“I know you!” The friend piped up. I looked at her with a worried glance. “You’re Y/N Y/L/N.” She was starting to get more excited then her friend was over meeting Gemma. “I saw the article about you in Shutterbug.” The article she was referring to was a small piece the magazine did about using social media to further your photography business. They spotlighted me because I had built such a vast career by myself and a lot of it was due to my diligence of keeping up with my social media.

“That’s me.” I smiled. “Are you a photography student?” I asked. She nodded quickly.

“I am. I mean, I take it in high school right now, but I really want to major it in college next year. You’re like, my hero. You are so young and you have this huge career.”  I blushed.

“Thank you, I’m not use to being called someone’s hero.” I stood up and hugged her. She squeaked a little.

“Can I get a picture with you?” I laughed and agreed.

“What’s your instagram? I will follow you.” I pulled out my phone.

“Really? Oh my gosh, wow. Ok.” She quickly wrote down her username and I followed her. “Thank you so much.” She gave me another hug and a few more thank yous before they both left the coffee shop.

“Well, that was a first.” I laughed and sat down again. Gemma looked at me with raised eyebrows and be both laughed. “That was really neat, getting to meet a young girl inspired.” I laughed. I looked down at Instagram and saw the picture of me had been posted as well as Gemma’s.

“Looks like we should move on, yeah?” I held my phone up for Gemma to see. “I have a feeling we will have more admires joining us soon.”

I quickly retweeted the picture of the girl and myself and tagged the girl with the caption ‘While having coffee with an old friend, I was honored to meet this lovely young lady. She is a fan of my work and a future kick ass photographer. Watch out world.’

Gemma’s phone dinged and she smiled. “Cute.”

“Wait, do you have notifications turned on for my posts?” I laughed as she nodded.

“Of course I do. I love seeing what you’re up to.”

“That’s so sweet Gems.” We stood to leave the coffee shop together and walked towards the MTV offices together. We were riding up the elevators when Gemma’s phone rang. She pulled it out and looked at the screen. She furrowed her eyebrows, seeming unsure if she should answer.

“Are you going to answer that?” I asked. She held it out for me to see. ‘Harold’ flashed across the screen.

“I’m not sure I should right now. I can call him back.” She went to hit ignore.

“No, you shouldn’t ignore your brother just because I’m here. Its ok. What if it’s important.” She met my eyes.

“You sure?” I nodded so she swiped her finger over answer. “What’s up knobhead.” I quietly chuckled at the nickname. I couldn’t hear the words but the low rasp of his voice floated through the elevator. It was bittersweet hearing his voice in real time. Sure, I’ve seen him on tv or listened to his albums, but actually hearing him talk over the phone or in person is a sound I have not experienced in years. Gemma glanced up at me quickly.

“Yeah, Harry, I did.” She bit her lip and huffed. “Harry. I don’t think this is the time for this conversation.” She was still looking at me. “Yes, she is.” She paused listening to him then said, “I know, but you’re putting me in an unfair position. I will call you back in a bit Harry and we can finish this conversation.” She said bye and hung up with another frustrated huff.

I raised my eyebrows in question. She huffed again.

“So, apparently I was in the background of the picture you posted.” She said.

“Oh.” I said. “And that made Harry call?” I questioned. Why would Harry care?

“He misses you, you know?” She said softly. The elevator dinged and we walked out to the office together. Gemma stopped in the hallway before we made it into the main office space, giving us a moment of privacy. “I wasn’t going to bring him up, it didn’t seem fair to you but then the idiot went and called me.” She shook her head and pinched her nose.

“What do you mean he misses me?” I touched her arm to get her attention back on me. “Why would he miss me. He made it rather clear that he didn’t care one way or the other. Besides, isn’t he dating Kendall now?” I had seen the pictures of them kissing on a yacht a few months earlier and they had been spotted a few times around LA together since.

“Oh, that’s just rubbish. He was looking for something that he could never find in her.” I cocked my eyebrow at this.

“I don’t know if I really want to know what you mean by that.” She took a deep breath and grabbed my hand.

“Look, I don’t know if I should even say anything, but I can’t just let this pass. After you left, Harry was a mess. He realized he had been a complete idiot. He knew he threw away the best thing he ever had, but he didn’t think he deserved you. A couple times he thought about reaching out to you, but it was finally Mom that talked him out of it. We could all see that you were moving on and doing well. She told him if he really cared about you, he would let you go, not drag you back into it by contacting you.” My hand was to my mouth as I tried to absorb everything she was saying. “It took really losing you for him to realize how much he loved you. I love my brother but he really screwed up when he hurt you. I want to see him happy, but I agreed with my Mom. Seeing you happy was more important. You didn’t deserve to have him pull you back in. At least, not until he was really sure what he wanted.”

I nodded, not sure what to do with all this information. “I don’t really know what to say to all this.” I managed.

“You don’t have to say anything, Y/N. I think you deserve to know that he still cares about you. Deeply. He never really moved on. Maybe because  he realized his feelings too late and never got closure.  I don’t know but he is looking for commitment now, but in all the wrong places.”

“Why did he call?” I asked, not sure if I wanted to hear the answer.

“He wanted to talk to you.” She stated. The weight of her revelation sat heavy on my chest.

“Oh.” Was all I could say.

“I won’t give him your number. I promise.” She hugged me. “Your friendship means alot to me. I wouldn’t do that to you, even when it comes to my brother.” I nodded and hugged her back. “If you want, I can give you his number? You don’t have to do anything about it, and I won’t even tell him you have it. But that way, you can make that choice yourself.”

“I… Yeah, ok.” I agreed. She pulled out her phone and sent the contact to me. “I don’t think I can call him. But thank you.”

“Are you ok? I’m sorry if I shouldn’t have said anything.” I gave her another hug.

“No, I’m ok. I’m glad I know. In a way, it’s good to know I wasn’t the only one hurt.” She gave me a soft smile before we parted ways into the office with a promise to have another coffee date before she flew back to London in a few days.

The Complete* List of Cap!Steve/modern!Bucky fics

* as far as we know

[ETA 9 months later: there is now a collection on AO3 that is more up to date.]

Here are all the fics we know of in which Steve is still Captain America, but Bucky was born in modern times. There are 22 23 24–not counting sequels!– which is a LOT more than we thought existed. Please send us a submission if you find any we’ve missed.

Completed works:

The World’s at Stake by Atsadi (teen, 16K)

Few soulmates are separated at birth by too much time – but when the distance becomes greater than one year all bets are off, with five years’ difference being equally as unusual as fifty.

Yet the one rule that has never been broken is that the soulmates’ lifespans always overlap.

So it came as something of a shock to the young boy in an orphanage in Brooklyn, New York, when his soul mark came in at the age of twelve and told him that his soulmate had been dead for almost sixty years.

perfectly right wrong number and on the mantle by melonbutterfly (teen/gen, 35K total)

It all starts because Steve is too dumb to handle his smartphone.

A wrong number AU in which Bucky Barnes doesn’t enter Steve’s life (meaning: Bucky wasn’t born until the eighties, but Steve is still Captain America) until Steve accidentally dials the wrong number. Wherein there is a lot of texting, some advice via Natasha and Darcy, a bit of pining, and a first date in an amusement park. Oh, and on top of being a disabled veteran, Bucky is a professional catwalker. Literally.

Souls, Love, Classic Movies, and Other Immortal Things by WanderingAlice (gen, 22K)

James “Bucky” Barnes died that day on the train back in 1945. Steve knows this, because he found his body. So why, seventy years later, is he presented with a bodyguard that looks and acts exactly like his dead best friend? A bodyguard who just happens to be named James Barnes?

Bucky Barnes is assigned guard duty to a man whose identity he’s not supposed to know. The thing is, this man looks exactly like Captain America. To make matters worse, he keeps having these dreams about him, dreams that are more like memories. Combine that with his childhood claim that he used to be called Bucky and “died in the war,” well, things are seeming really odd.

What the hell is going on?

Brought to Brightness  by eyres (teen, 11K)

Army veteran Bucky Barnes has fallen in love with Steve, a guy he met online a few months after he returned from Afghanistan. Only problem is, he doesn’t know Steve’s last name or even what he looks like.

When his sister helps him send his story into MTV’s Catfish, he’s hoping they can help him meet Steve or, at least, let him move on with his life if Steve isn’t real. Little does he know, Steve and Captain America have more in common than just a first name.

Highest Bidder by Brenda (mature, 3K, now part of a series)

“Bidding will start at $5,000, ladies and gentlemen.  $5,000 for an evening spent in the charming company of one of the most eligible bachelors in all of New York.  The winning bidder will be chauffeured to Mr. Barnes’ private yacht, where you’ll both share a meal exquisitely prepared by his own personal chef, and a sunset cruise around the harbor.  Who says romance is dead.”  The MC smiled, looking like nothing so much as a very hungry shark.

“$50,000!” Steve called, shocking everyone in the room – and himself – into silence.

The MC blinked.  His perfect, plastic smile melted right off his face.  "Uh…could you…I’m sorry, what was that?“

I Understood that Reference by RedBlazer (teen, 53K, now part of a series)

Polite, doesn’t know how to use a computer, tucks his shirt into his pants, and has exquisite hygiene. Bucky doesn’t know where this guy came from, but it sure as hell wasn’t Brooklyn.

[In which Bucky is the reference librarian who helps Steve catch up with the modern world, and then aliens invade New York.]

I’m Not Sick (But I’m Not Well) by loonietuna (mature, 30K)

Steve Rogers doesn’t meet Bucky Barnes in the 1930’s. Instead, Steve meets him April 17th, 2012.

Well…sort of meets him.

In actuality, Bucky had almost hit him with his truck.

Or:  The fic where millennial Bucky Barnes nearly runs over a freshly thawed national treasure, and what Steve Rogers did to adjust to modern NYC during those two weeks before the events of The Avengers.

Starbucks For Three Months  series by BananaWombat

A big blonde buff dude keeps appearing in the ER on Bucky’s shift.

7-Eleven Protein Bars Are a Very Important Part of Steve Roger’s Daily Nutrition Plan by doctorenterprise (mature, 2K)

Bucky works at a 7-Eleven. Steve comes in for a protein bar after his morning run. Then he comes back every day.

How To Hook A Superhero by daynight (mature, 4K)

Bucky is a college student who just got the internship of a lifetime, assisting a photographer who’s latest assignment is to profile Captain America. The Captain couldn’t possibly be interested…right?

Our history is just in our blood (history, like love, is never enough) by victoria_p (musesfool) (gen, 5K)

Steve is sure the guy working the morning rush at Starbucks is Bucky. Unfortunately, the guy doesn’t seem to know that.

It’s a Ghost Story (baby just say yes) by moontyrant (gen, 11K)

There are an infinity of universes in potentia. In one, Bucky Barnes was born in the early twentieth century, followed Steve Rogers into a crusade against Hydra, was captured and became the Winter Soldier. In another universe, Bucky Barnes was born in the 1980s and grew up to spend his weekends busting ghosts.

“And this guy is legit?” Clint asked for the third time, eyebrows making a break for his hairline

Tony threw his hands in the air. “How should I know! He has some reviews online but it’s not like he has a website or anything.”

1917 by MsBluesunflower (mature, 15K)

Born on March 10th, 1985 at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes was named after Sergeant Barnes, Captain America’s childhood best friend, who died when he fell off a train in the Swiss Alps.

In 2008, Peggy Carter donates to the Smithsonian letters Captain Rogers wrote to Sergeant Barnes in 1944—

After he fell.

Some lives are eternally entwined.

[ETA because mobile ate my bookmark, ugh!]

The Garden of Eden  by buckybarne (explicit, 12K)

In celebration of Thor’s return to Midgard, the Avengers find themselves in the Red Room, a strip club that smells a little too much like sweat, smoke and sex and Steve gets more than he bargained for.

STRIPPER AU in which Bucky is a stripper and gets Steve all worked up.

ETA: this was posted the day after we did our roundup!

The Superhero’s Courtship by captainrum (mature, 16K)

One night Bucky finds himself caught in the middle of a dangerous attack on the city. Lucky for him, a madman on a motorcycle comes to his rescue. He offers him pie in repayment.

Works in progress:

Venus in Vibranium by sadrobots (explicit, 45K)

“To be a Lead’s Support is a substantial responsibility,” Natasha says. “You must be Agent Rogers’ personal assistant, bodyguard, chef, maid, best friend, boyfriend, and whatever else he wishes you to be.”

***

In exchange for a bionic arm and a hefty paycheck, Bucky Barnes takes on a gig working for the now-retired Captain America, AKA Bucky’s lifelong hero, Steve Rogers.

Magnetic Gaze by Caplover0704 (teen, 13K)

Everyone has a Soulmate, a Completed that makes you whole, and the moment you meet their gaze you know because your entire world has changed. Until the moment you meet you are drawn to each other, given Impressions of their thoughts memories and feelings. Bucky Barnes hates this fact because there is only one person he has ever received an Impression from, and how could a decades dead Captain America be his other half?

No Man Alone  by  br0wncoat (teen, 63K)

I’ve seen a lot of posts on tumblr about Bucky being so irritated with the way Steve keeps throwing himself off high places with no regard for his safety, and I thought, what if Bucky’s never met Steve, but he’s just some injured former soldier who watches the Avengers on the news, and he keeps thinking, “Jesus, this Captain America asshole really needs someone to watch his back.” And then this story happened.

Into The City by marit (mature, 24K)

Captain America moves in next door to Bucky Barnes at 10pm on a Sunday.

I can’t feel my face when I’m with you (but I love it) by holahydra (eyefuckingstiel) (mature, 17K)

“Afraid I might kick your ass, big guy?”

The idea is so incongruous that Steve lets out a loud, derisive snort before throwing a ‘you gotta be kidding me’ look at the man over his shoulder.

[In which Bucky is a cop who goes to the same gym as Steve and offers to spar. And Steve, thanks to the serum, is a nymphomaniac.]

Dating Captain America by theRavensdesk (mature, 10K)

Sure, Bucky had his Captain America fantasies in high school, but so did every other even moderately queer kid. That didn’t mean he ever expected to actually get to date him. It’s somehow both easier and harder than he would have expected.

Steve had gotten pretty used to being alone. He never would have guessed that a chance conversation with a teacher at one of the schools Captain America visited would change all of that. It was starting to look like that seventy year time jump was going to be worth it.

Dark Places by Violet_Verses (mature, 18K)

…A shock of familiarity coursed through him, but he couldn’t explain why.

Whatever it was, those eyes were beautiful. And kind. And that was something Bucky had never thought about anyone. Ever…

[in which Bucky is a sex worker who finds Steve fighting in an alley]

First Impressions And Second Thoughts by winter_archer18 (gen, 3K)

In a world where Bucky Barnes was born in Brookln, 1978, and Steve Rogers grew up sickly and alone, barely surviving until the serum, things happen so fast

One of Steve’s major faults is that he gets way too invested in people. Way too fast, as it turns out, like what happened with Peggy

Natasha just happens to drag Steve out of the tower to her favourite coffeeshop on Bucky’s shift, and Steve finds out that first impressions can count for a lot.

The Modern Bucky AU by @greenbergsays

Somehow, as Bucky waits in line at Starbucks, he gets into an argument with Sam over the phone about the latest magazine article re: Captain America. I imagine that Cap was probably a huge influence in Bucky pursuing a military career and that Bucky has a lot of admiration for the man.

And the latest article is so goddamn shallow.

(ETA: now expanded on AO3 as The Man Behind the Mask)

Though it’s hard to imagine Jerry Only (left) and Glenn Danzig agreeing to even be in the same room today, for six years they worked together to establish one of punk rock’s greatest acts. Here they are during that run, in discussion either before or after a Misfits gig at New York City’s Chase Park, August 15, 1981. Photographer believed to be Eerie Von.

On this day in music history: December 8, 1967 - “Their Satanic Majesties Request”, the sixth UK (and eighth US) LP by The Rolling Stones is released. Produced by The Rolling Stones, it is recorded at Olympic Studios in London from February 9 - October 23, 1967. Following the release of “Between The Buttons” in early 1967, a number of diversions including Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones being arrested on drug charges (all of which are acquitted), and general lack of focus on making music, leads to their producer and manager Andrew Loog Oldham resigning from The Rolling Stones organization. In spite of this, the band begin recording another album, drawing upon the influence of psychedelic rock and experimenting with other exotic instruments and sounds along the way. Producing themselves for the first time, the sessions are erratic and drag on for several months. In fact, as soon as a month before the albums’ scheduled release date, there is doubt that the material recorded can be molded into a cohesive work. A final running order is worked out, and it is ready for release. The album is greeted with highly mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. Coming six months after The Beatles’ universally heralded “Sgt. Pepper”, The Stones album is largely written off as a self indulgent, ill conceived and pale imitation of that masterpiece. Original pressings of the LP come with a 3D lenticular cover designed by and photographed by Michael Cooper, having also shot the “Sgt. Pepper” cover. Like The Beatles album which features a doll wearing a sweater with “Welcome The Rolling Stones” on the front, The Stones pay tribute to The Fab Four in return by featuring small pictures of the band worked into the cover art work. The 3D cover is discontinued after the first pressing of the album, due to high costs to reproduce it. Though it sells well initially, interest and sales trail off quickly. In later years, though The Rolling Stones themselves are mostly dismissive of it, the band do perform the songs “2000 Light Years From Home” and “She’s A Rainbow” (#25 Pop) live over the years. KISS also covers “2000 Man” on their album “Dynasty” in 1979. In time, “Their Satanic Majesties” garners more favorable opinion, attaining cult classic status. It is remastered and reissued in 2002 as a hybrid SACD in a digipak, reverting to a standard redbook CD and jewel case after the initial pressing. It is reissued on vinyl in 2013, with some import editions replicating the original 3D cover. The mono version of the album, out of print since the late 60’s, is remastered and reissued on CD for the first time and on 180 gram vinyl as part of “The Rolling Stones In Mono” box set in September of 2016. “Their Satanic Majesties Request” peaks at number three on the UK album chart, spending six weeks at number two on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.

Hair

In all her childhood pictures, Norma Jeane’s hair is chestnut to reddish brown and straight. Then, around the age of puberty, her hair became wavy.

“I wouldn’t ever want to be a bleached blonde,” Norma Jeane Dougherty told Emmeline Snively who ran the Blue Book Modeling Agency sometime in early 1946. But on the advice that with blonde hair she would photograph better, not to mention be in much greater demand for modeling work, within months Norma Jeane was dispatched to the Frank and Joseph Salon to have her naturally wavy hair cut, straightened, and bleached. They liked their work so much they used her to advertise to store. The actual before-and-after difference is plain to see in the photographs of Joseph Jasgur in his book The Birth of Marilyn. An alternative story runs that Marilyn went blond in order to land a job advertising a hair product called Lustre-Creme Shampoo, after photographer Raphael Wolff persuaded her that it was worth the six hours at $10 per hour to go blonde.

Going blonde was just the start. Before she became a major star in 1953, Marilyn’s hair went through just about every shade of blonde: from ash blonde in The Asphalt Jungle (1950), to golden blonde in All About Eve (1950), to silver blonde in As Young As You Feel (1951), to amber blonde in Let’s Make It Legal (1951), to smoky blonde in Love Nest (1951), to honey blonde in O. Henry’s Full House (1952), to topaz blonde in We’re Not Married (1952), to unbleached dark blonde in Don’t Bother To Knock (1952), and then, at last, to platinum blonde in Monkey Business (1952).

Over the years, aside from at least a dozen studio hairstylists, Marilyn called on the services of Kenneth Battelle, Agnes Flanagan, Sydney Guilaroff, Peter Leonardi, George Masters, and Gladys Rasmussen. Naturally, these people were privy to Marilyn’s secrets.

Masters in particular is an oft-quoted source. He summed up Marilyn’s attitude to hair: “If i had done her hair in a way that would evoke the comment, ‘Your hair looks fabulous!’ I’m sure I would never have seen her again. She didn’t want to hear, ‘Your hair looks great,’ or ‘Your earrings are beautiful.’ She only wanted to hear, ‘You look fantastic!’” He also revealed: “She had one long blonde hair in her chest that she wouldn’t let me cut off. She liked to play with and fondle it. It was her security blanket.”

Gladys Rasmussen had this to say on the practicalities of getting Marilyn’s hair just right: “There are several problems with doing Marilyn’s hair. Her hair is very find and therefore hard to manage. It gets oily if it isn’t shampooed every day. And her hair is so curly naturally that to build a coiffure for her I have to first give her a straight permanent….The way we got her shade to platinum is with my own secret blend of sparkling silver bleach plus twenty volumes of peroxide and a secret formula of silver platinum to take the yellow out.”

In later year, every Saturday Marilyn would have her hair re-platinumed by a very old and ostensibly retired lady who came once a week from San Diego. Marilyn told Simone Signoret that this lady, Pearl Porterfield, had worked for MGM where she had been responsible for Jean Harlow’s platinum locks. Marilyn sent a car to the airport to pick her up every week, and take her to Signoret’s bungalow next door to hers at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Then, after the old lady picked at a buffet Marilyn laid out, she set to work on the two actresses, regaling them with tales of her time with the original blonde bombshell.

The damage to Marilyn’s hair from all those years of harsh treatments is evident in many of the last photographs taken of her in 1962.
