to pay homage to

ML’s Love Letter To Horror Movie Fans

I was rewatching Horrificator and Nino’s insistence on filming through a potential tragedy reminded me of that guy from Diary of the Dead, that guy from Cloverfield, etc..  That had me paying closer attention to how much this episode pays homage to Horror/Monster movie tropes. I was cackling so much, I decided to make a post to spread the hilarity.

A huge thanks goes to TV Tropes, where you can find the description of each stereotype.  You can also click my headers for a direct link to each.  There is an existing list of tropes from this episode that I found halfway through doing my own list.  I couldn’t find an entry for every trope so the ones that are not linked I came up with myself.  Also, I didn’t include every single trope.

Thanks go to Miraculous, les aventures de Ladybug et Chat Noir (aka, Miraculous Ladybug) for gaining even more of my respect and for giving some mad love to us horror fans.  Enjoy!

Prince Jimin 💛 Sleeping Beauty (Insp By:Sleeping Beauty, animated movie)
“In a faraway land, long ago, there lived a King and his fair Queen. Many years they had longed for a child, and finally their wish was granted. A daughter was born, and they called her Aurora. Yes, they named her after the dawn, for she filled their lives with sunshine. Then a great holiday was proclaimed throughout the land, so that all of high or low estate could pay homage to the infant Princess. And our story begins on that most joyful day…”-Narrator “Sleeping Beauty” 1959.

For people who want more genre anime with LGBT+ characters like Yuri!!! On Ice

Samurai Flamenco. Please.

It’s got an adorably dorky, enthusiastic, and justice-loving main character named Masayoshi Hazama. He’s a gorgeous model, but he dreams of being a superhero. And he does it! Kinda.

He meets cynical cop Hidenori Gotoh, who chastises him for being a vigilante, but the two grow closer and closer. (And closer, and closer…)

There’s also an important side character, Mari Maya, who is an idol. She is bisexual, and is in a relationship with Moe Morita, who is a lesbian. (There’s a third member of their group, Mizuki Misawa, who I believe to be coded asexual, though anybody can headcanon otherwise.)

(this happens multiple times!!!!)

The show is incredibly silly in nature (up until a certain point), and both pays homage to and parodies the conventions of the superhero genre. From the western vigilante, to the Japanese sentai, it’s got it all. (Even magical girls!)

However, it also deals with toxic relationships, conflicting ideas of justice, and mental illness. It takes all of these ideas very seriously, and treats all of its characters with respect.

So anyways, if you love Yuri!!! On Ice, and want to watch more genre anime with respectfully treated LGBT+ characters and canon relationships, I HIGHLY recommend Samurai Flamenco. It’s a wild ride, but Samurai Flamenco is an incredible show that deals with justice, morality, relationships, mental illness, and love, and puts all of these issues in the limelight. The romance between Masayoshi and Gotoh isn’t even the main focus of the plot, but is still developed incredibly naturally as they become closer and closer.

So go watch Samurai Flamenco!

EDIT: It has been brought to my attention that some people are indignant about me using the phrase “coded asexual”. One person explained to me that this is because it seems like I am trying to erase a character’s sexuality, and that they cannot ONLY be asexual. So let me explain. I have watched Samurai Flamenco 5 times, each time with an even more analytical mindset. (Because I just love it so much). The character in question here is Mizuki Misawa, and yes, I believe she is coded to be asexual. There is a very large cast of characters, and almost all of them are shown at some point or another seeking romance and sex. This heavily includes the other two members of the idol group, Mari Maya and Moe Morita. However, Samurai Flamenco deliberately shows Mizuki refusing and showing no interest in those same pursuits. The show purposefully showed her as uncomfortable in sexual situations, and she frequently refuses the poly advances Mari and Moe make. Since this is very deliberate, I am still firmly behind my phrasing, because she is implied to have no interest in sex and no sexual attraction. So, because I’ve watched SamFlam so many times, each time has only cemented that feeling in me. Any other part of her identity is up to headcanon, as that is the only aspect really shown about her.

Aretha Franklin is retiring, but may her shade live on forever

Aretha Franklin made a major announcement yesterday. She told local Detroit news outlet WDIV that she will be retiring this year after the release of her upcoming album. The singer, who has had a legendary 56-year career in the music industry, reminds us to pay homage to some of her shadiest moments. Luckily someone was gracious enough to put this compilation together on YouTube.

okay, but this book though.
Set in 1880 New York, this book tells the story of two witches who own a tea shop that helps that ladies of the neighbourhood by providing wisdom and remedy teas all while dealing with the oppression of women at the time AND the mania still floating around about witches.

Just Dance: Moonlight x Alvin Ailey dir. Anna Rose Holmer (2017)

An original dance piece pays homage to director Barry Jenkins’s award-winning drama, Moonlight

Just a reminder that Voltron isn’t just about your otp getting together.
Voltron is an amazing show with an amazing plot that pays homage to the original Voltron (defenders of the universe) and at the same time makes it new and unique with other things as well.
VLD is a show with not only a diverse list of characters but also has strong female characters and soon to be amazing character back story and development.
Its also a show that shows us new and creative worlds with amazing animation and acting.
Having lgbtq representation in voltron would be amazing and important to people in that community, but that’s not the entirety of voltron as a show.
So please stop being so hostile to each other in the fandom. Its embarrassing and gets the wrong message across to the creators and cast. Instead of arguing over who ends up with who, if anyone at all, please be more positive and share your excitement with the cast and crew and show them how much we as a fandom love and appreciate voltron legendary defender!! Hopefully I explained this as well as I did in my head…

Tung-Men Holiness Church in Tainan

This project by Mayo architects+ originates from a vision that the pastor has received from God: Tainan Tung-Men Holiness Church (TMHC) symbolizes an eagle as a biblical metaphor, and it is like an airport, serving as a boarding gate for non-believers to enter into God’s kingdom. The site of the new church is surrounded by secular residential buildings. Responding to this contextual city fabric as well as the pastor’s vision, the lower floors of the church building are used as socializing spaces such as coffee shop and family-friendly book store, inviting the community in and knitting the church closely with the life of the neighborhood.

The church is mainly composed of cool architectural concrete but balanced with warm wood and copper colors used for curved sanctuary ceiling, oak staircase and feather-like metal screens on the main facade. The aluminum perforated screens or “feathers” on the church exterior pay homage to the eagle metaphor, connecting this contemporary architecture to the members of the church on the emotional level. The orientation of every feather is calculated by the Fibonacci sequence and it is varied by increments of two degrees from feather to feather. Thus, the main church façade appears to be soft, transparent and flowing. Looking out from inside, the feathers form a sheer fabric that presents the secular world outside in a different light.

“It’s a nod to Trayvon, no question, Trayvon Martin and people like him. People like Jordan Davis, a kid who was shot because of the perception that he was a danger. When you’re a black man in a hoodie, all of a sudden you’re a criminal. That’s something we shouldn’t have to deal with, but we do. It’s a double standard. We can’t cover our head when it’s cold and raining because God forbid someone sees us and puts our life in danger. We wanted to pay homage to that—it’s not something we were shying away from.” ~ Colter

Luke Cage was filmed in 2014, at the same time Eric Garner was killed, and Colter spoke about the lack of justice that was served.

“When we were filming this, there were different things going on, Eric Garner, the policemen were acquitted. No one was brought to justice. There was no handing out of any sentence. There are a couple of other things that happened during the time we were filming. We were watching the news, and it was always someone being shot who was unarmed, and there is no justification for it. It’s mind-boggling.”

Holy shit Netflix originals. Jessica Jones approaches mental illness and rape culture. Luke cage going for black lives matter. This is awesome.

Big Hero 6!!!

Something I really appreciate about the new BATB film is that the costumes managed to (1) pay perfect homage to the original color tones and styles as seen in the animation and yet (2) carry symbolic changes and account for characters’ personalities, while also (3) being period appropriate. Like, wow. Major kudos to the costume designer and associated staff on this one.

For example, let’s just talk about Beast/Prince wardrobe, which I find really interesting and beautiful. BATB begins with a dance, and the Prince is in this very dark, regal yet kind of gaudy clothing, standing out from the sea of women in white. (He’s also wearing a makeup mask, which is just another awesome layer of symbolism and era-appropriateness that I will not go into right now.)

Throughout the film, Beast’s clothes get progressively lighter: from dark, torn rags (like he’s a criminal, a prisoner in his own palace) to the iconic lighter blue suit at the dance…to the moment Belle declares her love and they’re both dressed in all white (in this case, a symbol of purity and absolution)…to the very end, where the Prince wears blue again, but this time it’s the lightest shade of blue we see him wear. This change also reminds me of the trailer, where the word “Beast” in the title grows lighter as it gets closer to the word “Belle”. Beast’s subtle clothing changes represent the changes in his disposition and character. His wardrobe follows the path of the curse, from its inception to completion, as the castle goes from dark to light, from winter to spring, from death to life.

The two other dance scenes are also important.

When Belle and Beast dance together for the first time, Belle is the one who stands out in that stunning yellow dress. When Beast lets her go, her yellow dress positively pops in an otherwise monochrome, snow-covered forest, like a beacon in the night. And as he watches her go, he returns to rags, representing his hope leaving him behind.

In contrast, when Belle and the Prince dance together at the end, they both stand apart from the crowd but for different reasons than before. Unlike their first dance, this time the Prince is the one who shines the most in an otherwise temperate crowd, which parallels the opening dance scene. Unmasked, the Prince is in a light blue and white suit, the opposite of how he dressed before; and yet, this ending suit almost matches how Belle was dressed at the beginning of the movie, in her classic blue and white dress. Meanwhile, although at first glance Belle’s mostly white dress at the end might make her appear like just another girl in the crowd, she really stands out due to the roses on her dress, like a physical manifestation of spring coming back to the castle and the curse being lifted.
