I got everything I need right here with me. I got air in my lungs, a few blank sheets of paper. I mean, I love waking up in the morning not knowing what’s gonna happen or, who I’m gonna meet, where I’m gonna wind up. Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life’s a gift and I don’t intend on wasting it. You don’t know what hand you’re gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you… to make each day count.

Titanic’s ending was written intentionally ambiguous. For me, it was never unclear; Rose reunites with her beloved Jack in heaven, after dying as an old lady warm in her bed, thus completing “The Promise.”

However, as I reflected upon the parallels in the film I liked the idea of, “The Dream Wedding” interpretation. It is depicted strikingly like a wedding. Rose is radiant in white with people warmly greeting her as she ascends towards Jack.

My point is, not only do I think the scene parallels her suicide attempt, showing that she has lived a long and fulfilling life, but I think it symbolically contrasts and concludes the conflict of her impending “nightmare wedding” that she describes to Jack earlier in the film. It is an emotionally satisfying depiction of how her dream wedding would have looked. Not to mention Jack wears the same outfit in each scene, linking them, whether intentional or unintentional.

And that makes complete sense that it can be interpreted with both meanings simultaneously, because Rose’s story isn’t a singular one. There are two emotional plot lines in Titanic as opposed to the standard one for most films, 1. Her journey towards living a life with meaning, and 2. Her star-crossed, yet, timeless love with Jack. In so, I think it’s profoundly fitting that the final sequence can be interpreted as a culmination to both emotional plot lines. Ultimately, she lived a fulfilling life making each day count, and at long last, she wedded the love of her life.

“Tell us about the accommodations in Steerage, Mr Kelly. I hear they’re quite good on this ship.”

It was the first question that had been posed to Jack since they’d sat down and of course it had to be that one. He looked up at Davey, grateful that, even if he couldn’t sit next to him, he could watch him from across the table. It was a sight he’d never get bored of: Davey all done up in a suit with his hair combed. Although Jack could only image that he’d look even better with the jacket off and some buttons undone, hair tousled by roaming hands. He swallowed and looked away from the sympathy in Davey’s eyes and instead turned to face Esther, the source of the question.

“The best I’ve seen, ma’am. Hardly any rats,” he said, trying to be graceful.

It seemed to work. There were kind-hearted titters of laughter from the other people at the table – rich men and their wives who Davey had diligently introduced him – and they seemed to be laughing with him and not at him. Seeing her attempt at an insult had gone awry, Esther tried to cover her tracks.

“Mr Kelly is joining us from the third class. He was of some assistance to my son,” she explained briskly, not enjoying admitting to it.

Davey jumped in to define Jack as something beyond the cost of his ticket (whether he’d paid it or not).

“It turns out he’s quite the fine artist. He was kind enough to show me some of his work,” he said, offering Jack a small, secretive smile. He was awfully fond of that one particular sketch.

Shooting Davey a reproachful glare, Esther cleared her throat. “Yes, well. David and I differ on what constitutes fine art.”

Genre: That one where the author was in better mood when she wrote this than she normally is, fluff? comedy? not angst.

Word Count: 2617.

Decription: Last night was a nightmare, but why was today such a good day? There’s clearly something wrong with Zelo, maybe there’s something wrong with everyone living under that roof.

There were so many times where you would go back and think of your friends, the friends that you weren’t sure if you were going to see again. You had been doing so well in life, you were receiving a good education with good grades that were leading you to the career of your dreams and your friends were making each day count for you.

But now your parents were gone, the reason they were gone was in the same building as you and it had been too long since you had last seen your friends who had probably stopped collecting your homework and adamantly making sure they wrote down every single note you needed to catch up in class because you had been gone for so long. It was one of those days where all those thoughts were crossing your mind and you began imagining what your friends were probably doing, going through their normal day to day routine, just without you making an appearance.

They were good friends, but you stilled wondered if they were questioning your long period of absence. If they had been curious about what would be happening to you right now. If they rocked up at your house or tried calling you. Or did they just assume the government and the child support system had just cornered you into moving to some place far without telling anyone so that the people that killed your parents couldn’t come after you? Because they didn’t know the full story after all.

A thought crossed your mind as you remained under the secure warmth of the blankets, what would your life have been like today if your parents were still here? What sort of impact would Zelo and his friends have if they had come into your life without murdering anyone that you knew? Would you like them or would you find them intolerable like you do now? You daydreamed about a life where you could actually enjoy the presence of the people you were living with, whilst going to school, being with your friends and having your parents to return to in your own home with the smell of your mother’s fresh cooking filling the walls of the house with a sense of comfort.

Those dreams were taken away from you in the same moment the blanket keeping you warm was ripped away from you harshly. You flinched as your body met the cold air and shock resonated through you as you lifted your head to see who had been the one to take your covers away from you.

“Good morning!” Zelo grinned down at you and you blinked as he neatly folded the blanket at the end of your bed, only to sit down and cover his lower body with the blanket and then yours as you sat up in the bed.

“Did you sleep well?” Zelo inquired as you blinked at him unsurely, carefully placing your folded hands on the blanket covering your lap.

“Yeah, I slept fine” You muttered in response causing Zelo to bounce in his seat on the bed happily.

“Great! I had an amazing sleep too. One of the best nights of rest I’d ever gotten in my life I think. In fact, I was feeling so much like I rolled out of the right side of the bed today that I asked Himchan if he could prepare my favourite food for breakfast!” Zelo informed you with an exciting point of his finger and you nodded.

“That sounds great Zelo-”

“Do you know what my favourite breakfast is Y/N?” Zelo interrupted you and instead of forming words for a response you opted for shaking your head as an answer.

“Well, you’ll soon find out! Let’s go we have breakfast to eat and the whole day ahead of us” Zelo grabbed your hands, forcing you onto your feet and out of your room as you became as stiff as a board of wood, barely managing to follow him with your stumbling feet tripping under your weight.

You were awkward as you were forced to follow Zelo into the kitchen where just about all of his friends already were, they looked at you with knowing looks, but you weren’t sure if it were because they knew you had tried to leave again or if it were because they were aware of your current thoughts on the giant dragging you around.

As you sat down they stared at you, blinking and ignoring the bewilderment expressed through the look on your face, they also ignored the way Zelo was acting totally different to how they knew he would have acted the night before.

“Get ready for this Y/N” Zelo clapped in anticipation as he walked into the kitchen. Himchan exited the kitchen mere seconds after Zelo’s entrance nodded your way, acknowledging you as he put a bowl in front of Jongup and Daehyun. The two men dug into the breakfast, not waiting for anyone else to receive theirs as you sputtered and your lips fell apart in an attempt to form words.

“Why is Zelo acting like-?”

“Here we go Y/N!” Zelo came rushing back out the kitchen and your lips immediately became sealed again as your words were cut short and the others were left pondering how to answer your question because this was a subject one would not easily drop. In front of you was a bowl of cereal, the same type of cereal that Jongup and Daehyun were hungrily devouring across the other side of the dining table.

“What are you waiting for Y/N? Dig in before someone else takes it from you” When you looked up from your bowl of cereal and Zelo was sitting next to you, Daehyun was directly in front of you as he eyed your bowl with a hunger filled glint in his eyes instead of his nearly empty bowl. Your fingers held the spoon and you brought the cereal to your lips, clamping down on the food as you got a taste of the foreign breakfast meal.

“What is this?” You asked immediately after swallowing the food and Zelo grinned as he spooned more into his own mouth.

“Oreo flavoured cereal. Isn’t it great?” He enthused through a mouth full of food, and the only thing you understood from it all was the words Oreo and great. You couldn’t form an answer, there was such a thing as Oreo flavoured cereal and it was in a bowl in front of you at this point in time, and even after tasting it you weren’t sure how you were meant to feel about it.

Do I like it?

Or does it just taste horrible?

You stared at the cereal in contemplation, ignoring that clanging of cutlery against bowls and the chatter of the boys around you. You looked up as Zelo ran from the table, an empty bowl in his hands as he made his way into the kitchen and you stared at the remaining people around the table.

“I’m sure you all know what I want to ask” You muttered, looking in the direction Zelo had gone before there was the sound of your bowl dragging across the table and you blinked dully at Daehyun using your spoon to shove the cereal in his mouth.

“And I do expect an explanation” You finished before standing up and heading back to your room. When Zelo came rushing back out of the kitchen all talking had come to a stop, there was no need to rush with eating their food as they all sat deep in thought and Zelo was left staring at five silent men.

You were getting angrier the more you thought about it, there was clearly something up with this place and the people in it. And you knew that getting the answers wasn’t going to be easy, they couldn’t even think of an answer back there, let alone if they were going to answer you once they did have one.

“This is so annoying, there’s clearly something wrong with this guy. Shouldn’t I have at least been informed of any problems with these people before I was forced to live here?” You began ranting to yourself as you hoisted an outfit for the day out of your suitcase and marched into your joint bathroom with a towel over your shoulder.

The water steamed up the four walls of the bathroom and calmed your muscles as you stood underneath its downpour with a dollop of shampoo sitting in your hand. But it was unable to calm your racing mind and the anger your thoughts was fuelling.

“Where’d Y/N go?” Zelo asked and Yongguk smiled as the younger male sat back down at the table with his second serving of cereal.

“She said she had enough and was going to get dressed” Yongguk answered and Zelo nodded, looking back down at his cereal and his eyes lit up again.

“Did she enjoy the cereal?”

————

“We’re going to the supermarket” Youngjae came waltzing into your room, opening the door and helping himself to the fluffy pillows and soft mattress of your bed, making you cringe as you leant away from his limbs resting against yours.

“And what does that have to do with me?” You muttered, not taking your eyes off the show you were watching on the TV on the other side of your room.

“You’re coming with us, so put your shoes on and grab a jacket, it’s a little chilly outside today” Youngjae hummed with his eyes closed, nestling into your pillow and you turned to glare at him.

“Get your festy face off my pillow, it’ll rot with your stench if you stay there any longer. And get out I’m not going with you” You snapped, using two of your fingers to try and push Youngjae’s head away from your pillow.

“No, no, you are coming with us” Youngjae hummed back, frowning with his eyes still closed as he refused to lift his head from your pillow.

“Oh, and you would be lucky to have your pillow filled with the manly scent that is me” Youngjae smirked opening his eyes as you scoffed at him.

“Like I said, I’m not going to the supermarket with an idiot like you” You growled as Youngjae chuckled.

“Good, because we aren’t going alone” Youngjae cut anything you could say off with a whistle and the stomping of feet bombarded the hallway. Your already open door slammed back into the wall behind it with a bang and four boys came running into the room, crashing onto the double bed, making you all bounce at the sudden weight added. You snarled as the boys began wriggling around, filling the room with noise that made you want to punch their mouths shut and leaning or laying body parts over and against your own that made you want to kick them to the other side of the planet just to get them away from you.

“We’re not leaving until you agree to come with us!” Someone exclaimed, you think it might have been Daehyun and you groaned in irritation, letting your head fall back on the other half of your pillow.

“I’m sorry about this” You looked up to see Yongguk standing at the door to your room, and you thought he might have been here to scold the boys sprawled across your bed, possibly save you from having to go on an outing with any of them.

“But we need help because none of these guys are good at picking out the proper foods to bring home” Instead Yongguk came over and sat on a small empty patch of your bed and you gaped at him.

“Then why can’t you go with them?!”

“It’s dangerous outside, I prefer to stay home and do the things that need to get done here” Yongguk shrugged and you scowled at him.

“Why me?” You whined and they blinked at your sulky behaviour before Jongup responded to your complaining.

“You heard the man, no one laying on this bed is responsible enough to pick out proper foods”

“The last time we went shopping on our own all Himchan brought home was cheap wine and home brand cheese!”

“Well, he’s an idiot then. You can’t live off of wine and home brand cheese!”

“I know, I should have spent the extra money for the proper cheese, and the more expensive wine now that I think about it” Himchan hummed as he looked out the window of your bedroom in a reminiscence of the choices he should have previously made. A hand laid itself on his stomach and began rubbing circles soothingly over the area and you immediately cringed, having a good guess at what the cheese and wine diet may have possibly done to Himchan.

“Well nothing is gonna happen if we keep laying around all day, we need food and there is only one way we’re going to be able to achieve our goal of a full fridge” Zelo sighed as he sat up and rounded the bed so he was standing in front of you. You didn’t think it was even possible, but your body became stiffer than it was before and your eyes widened as a smirk dawned the giant’s lips.

“Grab her boys” He commanded and immediately there was movement in the bed. There were screams and there was shouting, most of which came from you. But there was a lot of noise adding to the commotion in the room as hands grabbed at you and fingers tried to latch themselves around parts of your body. All the whilst Yongguk stood back, heading to a safe spot in the room whilst you crawled around your bed, trying to escape the hands of doom and the shouting boys that had now caused an even bigger commotion.

Yongguk got his phone and hit record just in time to film you falling from your bed to the carpeted floor with an ‘oof’ for impact.

“I got me some bribery material” Yongguk grinned to himself as you groaned and Youngjae, who had been holding onto your knee with all his strength came barreling off the bed after you. You screamed loudly as Youngjae practically landed on you and the other three boys cheered at the results.

“We got her boys!”

“Good job Youngjae!”

“Yeah who knew your inner perv would help us” Daehyun giggled, your eyes immediately widened and you used all the force you could to shove Youngjae away from you.

“I’m not a pervert!” Youngjae exclaimed, ignoring the way you shouted at him in mortification. There was a silent pause in the room as the boys eventually stopped accusing Youngjae of being a pervert and their giggles quietened into a blissful quietness as they sighed. Seeing your opportunity you slowly scooched away from them, watching them all closely before getting up and running away from them.

“God damn it Youngjae you weren’t meant to let her go!”

“Why the hell was it my responsibility to make sure she didn’t run away?!” Yongguk shook his head as they all followed you out of your room and their feet clambered heavily against the floor as he wandered out of the room after them.

“Over my dead body will they be catching me” You muttered to yourself and took a quick turn into the kitchen where you ducked behind the bench.

“Where the hell has she gone?” Zelo exclaimed and you had to bring a hand up to cover your mouth so none of them would hear you giggling in the kitchen.

I wonder how long I can go without being found.

Titanic Parallels: Letting Go “pg. 30 vs pg. 90″ moments

“Pg.30″ The first time we hear the words, “let go” are when Rose exclaims, “No, stay where you are! I mean it, I’ll let go.” To which Jack responds, “No you wont.” It’s an audacious reply to someone attempting suicide, but in film world, it’s symbolic foreshadowing.

“Let go” has both literal and symbolic meanings. During her suicide attempt Rose threatens to let go of the railing if Jack comes any closer. The audience takes it more literally in this moment, without much thought to the symbolic meaning of it, as she would also be “letting go” of the life she desires to live. Despite her threat, he does approach her and she doesn’t let go. Moments later she slips and screams in peril; jolted in the present moment into realizing how valuable her life really is, she pleads with Jack to help her. Jack promises he wont let go. In so much, Jack is holding onto the value of Rose’s life (symbolically and literally on two occasions) from the moment he speaks to her, throughout the body, up until…

“Pg. 90″ Towards the end of the film, before Jack’s body gives into the icy waters, he places upon Rose the same responsibility he placed onto himself earlier in the film: for her to not let go of her life.

This time the audience takes it much more symbolically, despite it makes much more sense to be received as a literal meaning, given they are both inches from death in the freezing Atlantic Ocean. Jack makes his case by sacrificing his own life for hers, thus showing her exactly how much value he sees in her life. Alas, Rose literally let’s go of Jack in order to symbolically not let go of: the value of her life, and now, his with it.

Although many fans love to be mad at Rose for literally letting go of Jack, we have to remember that Rose kept her promise to him, and she never let go of fighting to lead the life she wanted. As hard as it may be, you can’t see Jack as just her love interest. If you do that, then I would argue you miss the primary emotional plot of the film: Rose’s journey to seeing that her life has value, and then fostering that value by making each day count. Jack Dawson is a literary device, a vehicle, if you will, to merely show Rose the value of her life. Once he does that, his journey is done. Leo makes it irresistibly hard for the audience not to fall in love with Jack, and ultimately we do; but it’s not Jack’s story. It’s the story of Rose realizing that her own life is valuable and can have meaning to it, so long as she never lets go of fighting for it.
