hey i know it´s easy to dismiss Oscar Wilde as a careless dandy but he was Irish, socialist and radically gay in Victorian England and when he says stuff like “morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people we personally dislike” it´s a highly political stance
Sorry to break in with this on a very much Sherlock-only kind of blog- I promise not to make a regular thing of this, but this is something that’s happened TWICE now.
This is Beyli. He’s a two-month old foal and he’s adorable. He belongs to a friend of the family.
So adorable, in fact, that a member of the public spent a nice afternoon feeding him. You feed the ducks and that’s ok. right? It’s a nice thing to do.
They fed him turnip. He choked and gave himself a stomachache as a result.
The problem is that horses can’t really burp and horses can’t vomit. Their digestive systems are fine-tuned and when they go wrong, they go really wrong. Colic in horses is difficult to treat and in Beyli’s case, like many others, proved to be insurmountable. With pain medicine not working, after 4 hours of doing their best with no improvement, the vet called time on his suffering rather than let him go on to a very slow and painful end.
A horse needlessly suffered and died because someone fed him the wrong thing. They weren’t necessarily malicious, they were just hugely ignorant. And worse, they were hugely entitled. There were already signs asking people not to feed the animals. As I said, this has now happened TWICE to the same family, and they’re by no means alone.
PLEASEDon’t feed horses that don’t belong to you.
Horses can have disorders, diabetes, allergies and dietry requirements and you have NO IDEA if what you’re giving them is acceptable or not. Even ‘safe’ things like carrot and apple could be ‘wrong’ for this particular horse. Grass clippings? Not okay. Grain? Not okay for a horse that hasn’t been regularly eating it.
Don’t assume. i have seen walkers pull up random plants and offer them over the fence INCLUDING TOXIC, DEADLY weeds like ragwort. I’ve seen horses offered dog-biscuits and bread. I’ve heard of horses being regularly fed by strangers thinking they were being under-fed, when the horse in question was on a vet-given diet to control weight and other conditions.
Don’t feed horses that don’t belong to you even little treats and things like sugar cubes because it gives them bad manners. They start biting and harassing people. It’s bad for their teeth and too much sugar is terrible for them.
In some places if the owner has liability insurance, if you can be identified, YOU will be legally responsible for the vet’s bills. And if you’re thinking ‘well, they’d never identify me’, then that’s besides the point.
Please. You wouldn’t feed someone’s dog without asking, I hope. You definitely wouldn’t feed someone else’s child.
TL;DR: Don’t feed other people’s horses. You can make them SERIOUSLY ill. Treat animals in fields like animals at the zoo: you’re welcome to look, but don’t meddle with their care.
Things I’ve learned spending the summer working in wildlife rehab
–Never trust wildlife. The second you trust that they will do something or stay somewhere is the second they fly off the table and give you a heart attack.
–I have no maternal instinct for human babies, but every time I hold a baby squirrel or bunny in my hands I’m ready to kill for them.
–Baby mink and baby weasels are the cutest things in the world.
–Trying to grab a squirrel is like trying to grab water.
–Adult squirrels are the devil. They WILL bite you and it WILL hurt. Even if they’re half dead, never assume they can’t bite you.
–If you are bit by any kind of wild animal, even if it barely breaks the skin, wash your hands immediately and bandage it. There are a lot of nasty diseases/infections we can get from these animals. Especially rodents; their bites are nasty.
–An angry bat is one of the most distinctive sounds in the world.
–Goose bites hurt less than you’d expect but crow bites hurt more than you’d expect.
–Just because an animal isn’t a rabies vector in your area doesn’t mean it’s no big deal if they bite you. There are plenty of other diseases we can get from wild animal bites.
–People will try and take care of wildlife and they will do a terrible job and feed them garbage.
–Don’t mess with snapping turtles. Just don’t.
–A lot of the orphan babies brought in are totally healthy and not really orphaned at all. People just assume that an animal is orphaned if they can’t see the parents at all times.
–People don’t always understand why we have to euthanize animals and they will get very mad about it.
–Turtles are very resilient and can survive devastating injuries. Also never assume a snapper won’t bite just because it’s injured. I had a snapper with part of her face missing try to take my finger off.
–Wear gloves. You never know what an animal has.
–All baby birds look at least a little bit like Bernie Sanders.
Producer Jeff Bhasker faced a daunting task several months ago. After having worked with Kanye West and winning Grammy Awards for producing Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” and Fun.’s 2012 album “Some Nights,” he had to decide whether to take on a new project: the debut solo album of One Direction member Harry Styles.
“I’d just had a baby, and I was kind of like, ‘Eh, I don’t know if I’ll jump into this,‘” Bhasker tells Variety. He agreed to have Styles come over to “just talk,” and proceeded to put him through the Bhasker home sniff test. “My dog tends to bite people, and he was kind of scoping Harry out,” Bhasker explains. Styles “did this move — like a little shoot the gun with his finger, and my dog walked over and started licking his finger. That’s when I was, like, ‘This guy has something special.'”
Once music came into the mix, Bhasker was sold. “He started playing references of what he wanted to do, which sounded like a cool rock band. I got it, and could see where if we pulled this off, it would be one of the coolest things ever. But he needed a buddy who plays guitar like he’s Keith Richards.” The insinuation being: Styles is the Mick Jagger in this scenario.
Adds Bhasker: “I’m so proud of the album itself, and also of Harry for being so brave, and committing 100%, and writing the kind of vulnerable lyrics that he wrote, and not pandering to what people thought he would do. People have no idea that this is what Harry Styles is like. Just like I didn’t know. He’s obviously very famous and beloved, but people don’t know the depths of what an amazing personality and artist he is.”
Variety spoke with Bhasker about the recording of “Harry Styles” ahead of the album’s May 12 release:
Snape was mean because he was a double agent. He loved Harry, but couldn't get close or sympathize with dumbledore's army and that stuff because Voldemort would suspect him. Don't you understand? Snape was PUTTING ON A SHOW. That's NOT his actual personality. Read the books.
WHY ARE YOU IN MY INBOX LEAVE ME ALONE I TAG EVERYTHING
I read the books
in two languages getting ready for the third one, sit down.
I don’t understand making fun of a girl’s teeth enough for her to change her appearance.
I don’t understand threatening a small kid with killing his pet because he is bad at his subject.
I don’t understand the way he treated Harry all those years. Oh thank god he ws good right before he died. Just for her eyes.
I read the books. Which means I know Snape was a double agent. HE WAS A DOUBLE AGENT FOR VOLDEMORT, TOO. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?
I doubt it so I’ll explain it in detail.
It means that dear old Voldy thought Snape was on his side while he wasn’t.
It means that he was trying to fool VOLDEMORT.
To fool Voldemort he had to behave like he was trying to fool Dumbledore.
IF he was trying to fool Dumbledore he would have to behave properly and unlike you think, non-abusive.
Being a double agent doesn’t meant you get to abuse kids half your size anon. You should think about that and stay the fuck away from my inbox.
no offense but why do people sympathize more with traumatized dogs than people? my cousin’s dog will bite people because he was abused and takes a while to form trust. everyone knows and accepts that. they feel bad for him.
then if I act erratically because I remember my trauma, I’m being a terrible person who needs to get over it and stop crying.
