tiny boats

So we’ve got a small but powerful token,

originally belonging to a powerful being, but taken by a flawed hero who didn’t know what he was getting in for,

and who is defeated, losing the item into the water.

This token comes into the keeping of an eccentric mortal for many years, giving them long life and vitality,

until they pass it on to a younger relative, and their health immediately begins to deteriorate.

The adorable, dark-haired, doe-eyed new bearer,

carrying the token on a necklace,

sets out to find someone else to take it,

but ultimately must take ownership of the quest themselves.

Along the way, they encounter endless dangers and obstacles,

finally facing their greatest challenge yet at a volcano,

and return the token to its source.

Featuring super idyllic, completely culturally stagnated hometowns,

raptors of unusual size,

Dramatic Tower Is Dramatic,

and tiny boats sailing into the sunset.

tl;dr - Moana is Lord of the Rings without the actual evil.

Types of Ships
  • Ships: the average joe
  • Boats: tiny ships that don't last for too long
  • Submarines: unknown/widely unpopular ships
  • Ghost ships: sunken ships that still sail, where one/both sides of the ship have died
  • Battleships: antis; they sink other ships for their own benefit, and are the cause of many ships wars
  • Water Police: they are the peaceful kind; they ship anything, and are always trying to (unsuccessfully) prevent ship wars
  • The Titanic: huge ships, usually OTPs that everyone knows are going to sink at some point
  • The Ark: end-game OTPs. Like it or not, everyone knows they're going to happen

I was inspired by @lazulisong‘s utter brilliance.

The moment Takeshi learned of Yuuri’s ginormous crush on Victor Nikiforov, he lifted Yuuri’s sweatshirt, took a big handful of belly, and shouted loud enough to wake Yuuri’s dead grandmother, “Keep dreaming, round boy! Victor would never want a tubbo like you!”

Oh, but if only Takeshi knew that Victor Nikiforov not only wants a tubbo like Yuuri but that he cried when Yuuri announced that it was time to drop the weight in preparation for the new season. Cried actual tears. The kind of tears usually reserved for deaths in the family or losing everything in a fire. The kind he shed when he thought Yuuri was breaking up with him. Bitter, heart-wrenching tears that leave him red-faced and heaving, then stumbling around hours later, wrung completely dry.

To be fair, Victor cries like that about literally everything—Yuuri landing a quad, surprise candlelight dinners, children in oversized parkas, murals that feature the color cerulean, dogs in movies (not just when they die, but when they’re there at all), the fourth ringtone on his new phone, daffodils, the word ‘sorbet’, and aerosol deodorant—but what Takeshi doesn’t know won’t prove him right, so.

“Maybe you can postpone it another week,” Victor mumbles into the kitchen table, where he fell into a chair and just sort of… deflated everywhere. He’s lying on top of the newspaper. Yuuri really wants to read it.

“You told Yurio he should’ve started training two weeks ago.”

Victor gives a despondent shrug. “He should’ve. Instead he’s been spending all his time Skyping with that degenerate.”

“You love Otabek. You hugged him and said you were proud to welcome him to the family, then you dumped a bag of condoms in his lap and cried because—and I quote—you were trusting him to take care of your most precious child.” And then a mortified, blushing Yurio slammed the airport shuttle door on Victor’s fingers.

Victor’s bandaged hand lifts and cuts through the air as though it were a tiny boat sailing on a choppy sea. Yuuri isn’t entirely sure what it means, but whatever it is? It’s suitably dramatic. “Yurio’s different.”

“Except not really.” Across the table, Yuuri studies the part in his hair, which looks a little… wider than usual. And sadder. It looks like a frown. He wants to lean forward to touch it, but that would do nothing except set Victor off again, and at the moment there isn’t enough fluid in Victor’s body to sustain him as it is. Instead, he pushes his own glass of orange juice toward him. “Vitya, please, drink something and replenish, would you? I don’t want to even think about what the headlines would say tomorrow if I let you pass out while we’re running this evening.”

At that, Victor lifts his head. Yuuri could skate an entire program based on the sheer betrayal on Victor’s face. “We’re running already? But we can’t! Not yet! I'm—You’re not ready. Another week. I’m putting my foot down, as your coach.”

“You’re a terrible coach,” Yuuri says. “I mean that. I want that on record. I can’t believe I’ve put my career in your hands. Can I fire you?”

“I’m a good husband, though, so it all cancels out,” Victor points out, which, okay, fair point. And he proves it by sliding both of his hands across the table and making grabby motions with his fingers. Well, one hand does. The bandaged one looks like a mummified sock puppet. “Don’t leave meeeeee.”

“I’m not leav—” Yuuri pauses, then rolls his eyes so hard he’s almost positive that he sprains something. “Oh. You were talking to my—”

“Squishyyyyyy.”

It comes out on the back of a long, sinuous whine. At Yuuri’s feet, Makkachin stirs, and he places his foot gently on her back and rubs until she settles. “I’m not going to bust my ass twice as hard just so you can manhandle me whenever you want.”

Victor’s head thunks back onto the table between his outstretched arms. “But you’re so soft and squishy, and it’s my favorite, and soon you’re going to be all bony and hard.”

“You’ve never once complained about me being hard,” Yuuri deadpans, then hides his face in his hands, because honestly. Victor cackles dementedly. “Look, I know you like my… well. I appreciate it, but I really need to start training yesterday if we’re going for the gold.”

Victor throws himself off of the table and drapes himself backward over his chair with a groan that honestly deserves an award. “Fine! Fine. Nobody ever told me that so much of being married is making sacrifices.”

It would be so easy for Yuuri to just turn his head and stare at the framed cross-stitch on the microwave that reads Sacrifice is one of the purest and most selfless ways to love someone. Practice it daily. Instead, he nudges the glass of juice a little closer, because, well. Sacrifice.

“Buck up,” Yuuri says cheerfully. “I’ll be back to being squishy before you know it.”

With a grumble, Victor reaches for the glass.

And while no one could ever accuse Yuuri of being the type to hold a grudge, he can’t deny the small, dark part of him that wants to call up Takeshi right this second and crow, “Round Boy got his, you jerk!”

Migrants from west Africa being ‘sold in Libyan slave markets’
UN migration agency says selling of people is rife in African nation that has slid into violent chaos since overthrow of Gaddafi
By Emma Graham-Harrison

West African migrants are being bought and sold openly in modern-day slave markets in Libya, survivors have told a UN agency helping them return home.

Trafficked people passing through Libya have previously reported violence, extortion and slave labour. But the new testimony from the International Organization for Migration suggests that the trade in human beings has become so normalised that people are being traded in public.

“The latest reports of ‘slave markets’ for migrants can be added to a long list of outrages [in Libya],” said Mohammed Abdiker, IOM’s head of operation and emergencies. “The situation is dire. The more IOM engages inside Libya, the more we learn that it is a vale of tears for all too many migrants.”

Ok idk how decent a prompt this'll be or what even counts as a decent prompt, feel free to ignore me... but.. something that has Kent and NHL!Bitty in it (maybe Jack too IDK)??? idk?? they'd conceivably all be at the All Star Game at the same time (idk how the divisions work out there but shit that would mean Kent and Bitty on the same team???)

Reynolds is going over the Falconers new marketing proposal for the second time when Jack’s phone starts buzzing in his pocket. He ignores it, but it starts up again right after.

“Excuse me for just a moment,” he slips out of the meeting room into an empty office to see it’s a facetime call from Bitty. He answers to find it’s not his husband, but a grinning Kent Parson.

“Zimms! Hey, guess who made the All-Star team?”

“Lord, give me back my phone.”

Kent looks over his shoulder. “Shush, Tiny Boat, I’m your captain now.” He looks back to Jack. “I’ll give you a hint, his team lost last night, and you’re fucking him.”

“Parson!”

“Or he’s fucking you. Equality or whatever.”

“Okay, yeah, I get it. It’s Bittle.” Jack sighs, before realizing what Kent had even said. “Wait. Bittle’s playing in the All-Star game? With you?”

“Yeah, and against you, Iceman. But you do realize you’ll lose with the fastest guys in the league playing on my squad. It’s going to be a fantastic year! So, it’s party time!”

“Congratulations, Bits!” Jack says loudly so Bitty will hear it. “Hey. Tell him ‘I love you’.”

“Aw,” Kent grins, “hey Bittle, Jack says he loves me.”

The roar of laughter behind Kent gives Jack the feeling that Eric probably made some kind of rude gesture. Rightly so. A thought strikes him and Jack checks his watch.

“It’s only two in Seattle, you’re can’t party at lunch on a Tuesday.”

Kent’s jovial expression sobers. “Excuse you,” he tilts down his camera to reveal a bemused Bitty, Jeff, three men Jack doesn’t recognize offhand, and a lunch spread Jack is immediately wildly jealous of. “I’d say this is a party. Kudos to your Ride-or-Die B for hunting down a Michelin star reservation on like zero notice. Check out the charcuterie platter, it’s a thing of beauty.”

“I come here after every second home-loss. You just followed me here.” Eric protests from out of frame. “Jack, he took my phone.”

Kent turns away from the camera with a snappy nod. “And who ate the last piece of Sopressata? That’s right. You eat my wild boar, I make an awkward phone call to my ex on your phone. He’s snippy. Swoops, give him more wine.”

Bitty curses at Kent in response.

“Jack, I love him. We’re going to run away together.”

“You fucking wish, Parson.”

“I’m going to hang up now,” Jack announces over the brewing argument. “I have a meeting to get back to. Tell Bittle I’ll call him when I’m done.”

Jack ends the call and stares at the blank phone screen for a moment, listening to the dull murmurs of the meeting next door. He grips his phone tight and clenches his teeth together to hold back an excited cheer.

Bitty’s first All-Star game. Their first All-Star game.

please tell me that, somewhere in the world, there exists……

a Will/Hannibal post-fall fic where they are forced to travel by cruise ship in order to get to their new home and go into hiding

and it’s like the worst fucking cruise too

with like the most enthusiastic cruise director who literally badgers Hannibal at every turn until he takes a fucking napkin origami class

and Will tries to stay as drunk as possible throughout

and his torn-up face scares the shit out of an innocent child every time he turns down a new hall or walks into a room

which happens a lot because he gets lost down the faceless hallways of each deck trying to remember where his room is a whole lot

and there’s the captain’s dinner and Hannibal is like FINALLY and they both get into formal wear and he expects champagne and dancing and a nice meal

and yeah that happens but Will’s so blah about it (because he’s so drunk) that the rest of the people who want to be friends with the young newlywed couple feel like they aren’t having a good enough time

so then there’s old people making mad sexual innuendo

and Will and Hannibal aren’t fucking because Will put them over a cliff and the’re both still in pretty bad shape, physically, and Hannibal isn’t even sure Will wants to even though he is like heart-tartare-and-flowers OBSESSED with Will Graham, so, like

the food sucks
the company sucks
the wine sucks
there are too many children
he was forced to sit through a fucking disney movie
he’s sharing a room the size of his kitchen with the object of his desire
he was forced to fucking hula dance the other day by the excitable woman

and he totally buys into the other passengers’ plan to Make The Honeymoon More Romantic

and he plays SO nicely and he smiles and laughs and does all these Human things with all these humans and Will is sober long enough to notice

and then he’s like…. we’re not having a Draw Me Like One Of Your French Girls moment, Hannibal

and Hannibal is like…. but yeah we are

and Will is like…. i’m gonna go on the daytrip to see some dolphins

and Hannibal is CRUSHED because if there’s anything he despises it’s the thought of the damn dolphin daytrip and Will FUCKING KNOWS IT

so he gets drunk in the top-deck pool and he’s sunburned and miserable when Will gets back

and Will is drained and he threw up so much because the tiny boat was rocking all over the place and he, too, is sunburned and miserable

and they are miserable together and go to the shitty little art gallery to look at the auction items and gawk at how bad the art is

and they are equally appalled

they have no idea how anyone can enjoy any of this bullshit

dolphins are not dogs and Will hasn’t spent time with a dog in WEEKS and it’s really wearing on him

and you can’t even have a hotplate in one of the cabins because it’s a fire hazard so Hannibal hasn’t cooked in WEEKS and it’s really wearing on him

so, in the wee hours of the morning, they bust into one of the kitchens and make real food and Will explains why he likes dogs in completely fluffy, comforting detail until Hannibal understands

and they have a really nice time together and go back to their cabin

and Hannibal still can’t wait to get off this boat and stretch his legs

and he knows that Will is missing the comfort of his animals so he lets Will pet his head until he falls asleep

it’s really, really nice

he kind of contemplates killing the girl on deck three who brought her comfort rabbit on board so Will can take care of the traumatized animal until they make port at the place where they’re gonna jump ship

but he doesn’t

and they’re both less miserable when they wake up the next morning

so they keep spending time together and not with anyone else

and when they go to another formal dinner the others comment that they look much better rested and try to determine in whispers if it looks like they’ve got that lovemaking glow but they decide Will just still looks kinda green from yesterday

and Hannibal asks if he wants to take the portrait class with him

and Will realizes he was blending in with the humans for him

and so he’s like, nah, I want to do whatever you want to do

so they go sneak into the kitchen again, only it’s between shifts and a dude comes in early and they have to lock him in the walk-in

they raid the kitchens for all the supplies they want and they go back to their room to have fine wine and cheeses and maybe make out for a while

until the captain is knocking on their door with security

so they strip real fast and they stumble over to the door in some blankets and they’re like

we don’t know what you’re talking about??? some guy in a kitchen?????? we are on our honeymoon we’re getting it on in here???

and the old folks hear about it and WHOO HOO when they get to the dining room that night

and Will blushes so beautifully and he hides his face at Hannibal’s neck when they dance and Hannibal’s like

OH YEAH.
I’M IN.

Dynamic Character Introductions: a case study

Your main character’s first introduction is one of the most important scenes in your story. In addition to establishing the setting and their role, their personality must be introduced to the audience quickly and subtly, so that it does not feel like exposition. In a visual medium, we do not always get the benefit of being able to read/hear their inner thoughts, so writers/artists have to come up with ways to convey the same information visually.

Here, we’re going to look at what makes a character introduction powerful, using Jack Sparrow’s first appearance in Pirates of the Caribbean as an example. The scene, which is only a little over a minute long can be seen here.

We first see Jack from behind, at a slightly low angle, giving him the impression of being powerful and mysterious. By lowering the horizon line, the audience is led to assume that he is standing high up, also adding to the idea of him as a powerful man.

The next shot continues this impression by forcing the audience to look up at him. We zoom into his intense expression as he grabs hold of one of the ropes and jumps down…

…only to reveal that his boat is tiny, and filling with water. This completely subverts the audience’s first impression of Jack. Disrupting audience expectations can also be done to make things more uncomfortable, but here it is used to establish him as a more comedic figure. We’re still only twenty seconds in at this point, and the audience has already gone through two different emotional reactions.

As we continue, Jack comes across a few pirates who have been hung, and he takes his hat off to salute them, telling the audience that he has an unconventional sense of morality, and sympathizes with criminals. He also sarcastically nods at a sign warning that pirates will receive the death penalty, telling us something else about his character.

Jack continues to stand on the mast while the little boat sinks, and stepping off of it once he reaches the boardwalk. His refusal to abandon ship shows an adherence to the idea that a captain should go down with his ship, but Jack does so in a way that allows him to save his own skin rather than sink. This lets the audience know that Jack is concerned with appearing like a good ship captain, but ultimately places his interests and self-preservation first.
