Of Da’nan and Dragon Dances

All of the Dalish headcanons/writing from @tsyele, @cerulione, and @thefluffynug inspired me to write something with my Lavellan, Alethea, drawing from their headcanons. And I threw in Solavellan for good measure because these two are idiots and she deserves at least a little time to be happy with the stupid egg.

Also, I thought I’d try incorporating characters I don’t normally write so I’m sorry if I rather butchered their voices.

It takes a letter from Keeper Deshanna to remind her how close the Lunar New Year is, but almost immediately, Alethea is off. She has never before thought about how much work must go into the preparations for the yearly celebrations her clan puts on, the dances and costumes, the decorations and da’nan. The food…

Josephine is a miracle worker, she decides a few short hours later. Had she been in the Ambassador’s place, she would likely have screamed, but Josephine is all calm efficiency as they organize the delivery of special snacks and food, hardly blinking when Alethea suggests making the dumplings and chewy sweet balls by hand.

Meanwhile, Dagna is ecstatic at the suggestion of creating an alternative version of da’nan, appropriate for the supplies they already have lying around Skyhold, and Alethea almost regrets asking when she sees the glint in her Arcanist’s eyes when Dagna promises the most impressive ones possible.

When it comes to the decorations and dragon costume, she hesitates. Solas would be her first choice, as artistic as he is, but his prejudice against her people, regardless of their feelings for each other, makes her pause. Her thoughts regarding the existence of the Creators aside, it is still a tradition of her childhood, of the People. A time when they could forget their worries and celebrate. And it is something that she cannot bear to see ridiculed.
