This season resulted in SNL’s highest ratings in over 20 years, their best since Season 20 which aired from the fall of 1994 to the spring of 1995. Three hosts (Scarlett Johansson, Melissa McCarthy and Dwayne Johnson) entered the Five Timers Club, the most of any prior season. Kenan Thompson became the longest serving cast member of the show, surpassing Darrell Hammond’s record. For the first time in the show’s history, they went live coast to coast for the final four episodes of the season. Prior to the season’s start, two Weekend Update specials were aired from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions to more closely cover the presidential election. It was also announced in March that the show will be bringing back Weekend Update Thursday this August for four episodes which will provide an early start to Season 43.
“She starts preschool in a couple weeks, which I think is gonna be real interesting. Once I finally got her into preschool, and it was like a done deal, I was like “Hey, let me tell you some stuff about her…she is not potty trained, she’s allergic to nuts and she bites…so I gotta go…” - Tina Fey on her youngest daughter Penelope, 4.
