The Parallel Julieverse is back from its annual “jolly holiday” and what better way to kickstart the year than a tribute to Julie and her best-ever bestie…and one, moreover, that is inspired by recent real-world events.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll surely know that Carol Burnett was the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2015 Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) Awards held last month at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. On hand to present the award to Carol was the contemporary comic star duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. In a warm and witty prologue widely dubbed the highlight of the show, the pair praised Carol as not only a huge influence in their own lives but a trailblazer for women comedians everywhere. At one point, Tina Fey gushed:

“Carol has been such a huge part of all our lives for the past fifty years. From her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress in 1959 to eleven glorious seasons of her own smash hit variety show to her unforgettable film roles in movies like The Front Page and Annie – right up until this year’s unauthorized biopic Carol, about her longtime friendship with Julie Andrews.”
“Errr nope,” Poehler interjected with faux concern, “No, Tina, that’s not what that movie was about.”
"Watch it again,” Fey retorted.

It was a joke that arguably got the biggest laugh of the night from the star-studded audience and that, interestingly, plays on the long history of lesbian subtext surrounding Julie and Carol’s friendship touched on in a previous post.

It’s also an irresistible spur to the kind of tongue-in-cheek revisionism that’s the Parallel Julieverse’s stock-in-trade. So, sorry, Cate and Rooney, we love you but this is how Carol ought to have looked… ;)
