CHOICES UNIVERSE

So based on what I’ve played so far, this is what I can tell (or probably theorize) about the world of our beloved choices stories.

1. The Freshman, Rules of Engagement, Royal Romance, LoveHacks, Haunting of Braidwood Manor, and Endless Summer are all set in the same reality. Like in these books, the characters can cross over because they’re all from the same world.

2. The timeline of these books can be traced in a logical and chronological order.
-The Freshman book 1 is the earliest of all the stories. Followed by The Freshman book 2.
-TF book 2 is set in the winter time so the events of this book probably happen at the same time as Haunting of Braidwood Manor.
-Since Brandon and Zack are officially together and Brandon has not yet left the States, it can be presumed that LoveHacks takes place around the same time as TF book 2 (or reasonably before TF book 2, but after TF book 1). Remember that in one chapter of LoveHacks, Ben and the MC see Brandon and Zack together at a baseball game.
-The Freshman book 3 happens after LoveHacks and Haunting of Braidwood Manor.
-Rules of Engagement book 1 happens after TF book 3. If you’ll remember, Madison mentions in the finale of TF book 3 that she, Logan, and Tripp are going on a cruise. And indeed you do see them throughout RoE book 1. This also makes sense because in RoE, Claire’s uncle Antoine appears in the boat which means he is no longer in San Francisco (where LoveHacks takes place). In other words he did not remove himself from the boat in order to have a blind date with the MC of LoveHacks, thus he should be on the boat AFTER the events of LoveHacks.
-The Freshman book 4 happens at the same time as Rules of Engagement book 1 because the events of TF book 4 happen very shortly after the events of TF book 3. In other words, while the MC, Zack, Zig, Chris, Kaitlyn, and James are road tripping, Madison, Logan, Tripp, (and apparently Edgar) are on the cruise of RoE.
-Rules of Engagement book 2 happens after RoE book 1 and probably might coincide with TF book 4 (given that Madison still appears in in RoE book 2).
-The events of Endless Summer coincide with the events of RoE book 2. In fact, the chapter where Blaire Hall calls Grace to tell her to call before her flight to La Huerta is where the events of Endless Summer actually begin.
-The Royal Romance is set years after the events of RoE book 2 (but not too many years far off; I speculate around 1-2 years). This makes sense too because the younger brother of the prince in RoE (I shall call him Leo just for clarity’s sake) is now crowned prince of Cordonia (I shall call him Liam). In RoE book 2, Leo is still the crowned prince of Cordonia. However, in Royal Romance, Liam mentions that Leo has already abdicated which left him as the heir to the kingdom.

3. Most Wanted is a series/franchise of this world. This is confirmed as it’s an arcade game in LoveHacks, TF, and Endless Summer. But how does this explain the crossover of some characters of Most Wanted into other books? Number 4 is purely speculation on my part.

4.Most Wanted is supposed to be based on real life, this is according to Zahra. My theory is that the characters of Dave, Sam, Cass, are real. They exist in the same reality as the other books. And Most Wanted is a series that is based on them. So let me repeat this in another way just to clarify. The people who are in Most Wanted all truly exist in the same universe as all other books. The murders did indeed happen in that world and Sam and Dave really did solve the case. And in that reality in which they exist, “Most Wanted” is a series/franchise/video game which is based on the true story of Sam and Dave. If you think about it this way, it would make sense as it would allow for the realistic crossovers of Cassandra Leigh, Ryan Summers, Alyssa Griffin, and Nikhil into TF, LoveHacks, and RoE.

5.Most Wanted events took place before the events of The Freshman book 2. I can’t confirm if it happened before the events of TF book 1. I’ve deduced this because in TF book 2, Alyssa Griffin has risen to fame (presumably after the death of Haley Rose/Tull) fulfilling her wish at the end of Most Wanted.

6.The Crown and the Flame books 1, 2, and 3 happen hundreds of years before the events of any of the books. This would make it chronologically the earliest (not TF book 1 like I mentioned earlier).

7.Since Olivia, from the Royal Romance is a descendant of Luther Nevrakis, it must be presumed that the characters of TCTF are from the same reality as the other books. My speculation about this is that all supernatural events of TCTF are most likely not real. The people, however, must be real.

Snow Crash is the only cyberpunk media I’ve seen that fundamentally gets that the Dystopian Future isn’t going to be a stylishly grim aesthetic blog, dark and rainy twenty hours a day.

The Dystopian Future is going to be ruined by lawyers and it’ll be goddamn ridiculous and it’ll be coast-to-coast strip malls and Minion memes and anthropomorphic dicks and unskippable ads and corporate Twitter accounts referencing five-year-old memes and malware-filled download sites.

if you want a vision of the future, imagine your old high school acquaintance who never outgrew 4chan, forever.

A Hunger Games (Book 1) Timeline

Hi all!

About a month ago, I was inspired by an idea for creating a timeline for the HG books.   As a visual learner, I felt that something that anyone could reference easily for the details on when certain events happened.  So, I began going through the book, and what follows is a timeline based on the first book (page references are from the paperback edition).

My thanks to the always wonderful @mtk4fun and @norbertsmom for looking over and helping me correct mistakes and improve the details.  You both are the best!

So, here it is…

Do you think Jaime was actually prepared to put the baby in the trebuchet? I get that he was threatening horrific violence so that he wouldn't have to perpetrate actual violence. That's cool. At the same time, he also told the Freys only a fool makes threats he's not prepared to carry out. Suppose Edmure had still refused to surrender the castle: would Jaime have followed through on launching Baby Tully into the ruins of Riverrun?

Thanks for the question anon.

This is long and is going behind a cut, but in brief: I don’t think you even have to think Jaime *might* under some conceivable circumstance trebuchet a baby to realize that this particular threat is empty. No. Jaime is not going to trebuchet *this* baby.

And if I’m honest? I find the question, “Would Jaime have really trebucheted Edmure’s baby?” to be…entirely missing the point of Jaime’s Riverrun gambit. In fact, asking that question indicates that the reader doesn’t realize that the Riverrun segment *is in fact a gambit* at all.

I think a major reason for the confusion many seem to have felt in the wake of the episode is that the show changed it so that from a motivation and process standpoint, it was unrecognizable as the sequence from the books.

;; Just a little information as we keep in mind 4.0 and new revelations from the most recent keynote:

The Empire launched its campaign against Othard as a whole in the year 1528, and Doma eventually fell and was annexed by Garlemald in the year 1552. It’s subjugated even before Ala Mhigo, which falls to the Empire five years later in 1557 – it just seems like Ala Mhigo was conquered first because we only heard about Doma’s fall partway through A Realm Reborn, and we also didn’t get additional information concerning where Doma was on the timeline until the lore book was released. Othard has dealt with trying to fend off the Empire for a long time and has been occupied quite a while, something to remember as we move forward with assisting the various resistances.

The rebellion in Doma also succeeded in taking back the nation’s capital city temporarily before being eventually crushed when the Empire turned its attentions back on Othard following the complications concerning succession back home in Garlemald. Also considering how long they resisted the Empire prior to its first fall, Doma is – or was – a nation not to be taken lightly.

Hingashi isn’t actually part of Doma but is a separate nation entirely:

“One group, lead by Yugiri, boarded a great galleon, and in their panic made east across the Ruby Tide for the island nation of Hingashi. Alas, this nation would not risk inviting Garlemald’s ire, and turned away the Domans.” (Encyclopedia Eorzea, pg. 196)

It’s mentioned on the slides as being a nation of its own, but it’s easy to lump in in as part of Doma and call it Doman housing because of the similar aesthetics. Doma and Hingashi were/are separate nations! Hingashi sounds a bit like Othard’s answer to Ishgard, given its history of isolationism and its desire to keep its boundaries closed to foreigners. It seems to have a history of keeping itself largely neutral and self-contained, as well.

A little background information on Yugiri, now that she’s likely returning to the story in an expanded capacity:

“Having witnessed the terrors wrought by the Garlean Empire, a young Yugiri made the pilgrimage from her Raen home to the village of the shinobi, seeking tools with which she might fight the Empire. Through years of inhuman trials, she learned the ways of the shinobi – how to fight from the shadows – eventually earning the rank of “jonin.” Having thus mastered ninjutsu and being given the epithet “Mistwalker,” she pledged herself to the remnants of the Doman general’s clan. Thereafter, she waged a war against the Garlean Amy. Alas, the rebellion ended in defeat, and the Domans lost everything. Obeying her lord’s orders, Yugiri led a number of her countrymen in flight. Though the journey was long and arduous, she never allowed her people to despair, and, at the end, found them a new home. At twenty-six summers, she continues her fight alongside the Scions and the Eorzean Alliance, but has not once forgotten about her homeland or her people’s desire to one day return. Her lone indulgence is a bowl of rice doused in warm soup and topped with a small pinch of ground white radish – a Doman delicacy.” (Encyclopedia Eorzea, pg. 196)

And finally, some about Othard in general and its geography:

“Othard, or the Far East, as it is commonly referred to by those living in the west, is the smallest of the Three Great Continents, yet much like Aldenard in that it is comprised of a main landmass and countless islands off its coasts. While Aldenard is longitudinally situated farther south than Ilsabard, the towering spires which line the region’s northern border are covered in snow year-round, and the land beyond them is predominantly frozen. From these mountains trickles down the water which gives Othard life, eventually forming the One River – the longest and widest watercourse in all the Three Continents. This river passes through the great swath of grasslands in which the Auri Xaela clans live before winding through Yanxia – a fertile land that, until the recent invasion by the Garlean Empire, was controlled by the nation of Doma.

Though connected geographically, for thousands of years little interaction has taken place between Ilsabard and Othard, the main reason being a combination of near-impassable mountain ranges and deadly wastelands which severely restrict all land routes. While coastal cities have experienced limited contact with the outside via trade, the overall isolation of Othard has allowed local cultures to evolve with little to no influence from the west. Only in the past two decades have things begun to change – the advent of airship technology thrusting open the once-closed doors of the Far East. However, this new exposure also served to alert the power-hungry Garleans of new territory ripe for the plucking and it was not long before the Empire had set their sights on Doma and Dalmasca – two nations which have since been brought under the imperial standard.” (Encyclopedia Eorzea, pg. 12)

Also, this mostly my own personal thoughts, but I think it makes a lot of sense to be including both Doma and Othard in Stormblood, and that’s beyond just talking about similarities to Ala Mhigo. I definitely don’t want to talk down the really excellent opportunities to compare and contrast how the Empire handled Doma vs. Ala Mhigo and how the resistances will likely be very different, as well… but on the other hand, remember that the Meteor Project was born on Othard. It was tested on Othard. It failed and was revised on Othard. Remember what we’re faced with at the end of 3.5? What’s potentially alluded to in the 3.5 trailer with Nero’s dialogue and some of the images? And now that we’re heading to Othard again? Yeah. Might be a chance to expand some on the Meteor Project and a possible revival/revision/redirection of that knowledge and idea concerning the primal that’s hanging in the sky over the Wall, depending on what happens in 3.55. We’ll see!

Hey! So I was wondering if you had any recommendations for some fics centered around Weasley/Harry stuff. Like, fluffy and warm family-focused stuff. Preferably before next-gen stuff, like during the book timeline maybe? idk I just love those about Harry being accepted and treated like just another Weasley brother it's so sweet and it makes me happy x) Unfortunately I don't really know how to look for them. I mostly just stumble across it. (Some Hinny incorporated in there would be a bonus xD)

ALSO, just any fic with some lovely brotherly interactions between Harry/any of the Weasley brothers. uwu

Ok I picked out some of mine that I think fit, plus some of my favorites from other authors :) [read them I love them].

I don’t tend to read many fics that happen during the books, so these are all post books but mostly pre next gen.  If anyone has some during the books favorites tell me and I’ll share!

Also, check my tag for the Weasleys

Please share favorites if you have them!

Rough-draft-ish timeline for book 1! BTW if you are visual like me, the closest we get to a calendar year for All For the Game is 2006/2007. It’s not 100% accurate, because not all of the dates match up perfectly throughout the whole series, but this is the closest one, with only a few dates off. It diverges in June, so I kept to the book for the rest of June because dates were easy to track; it meets back up with the calendar year in August and so far as I’ve checked sticks pretty close to it for the rest of the series?? The games do at least??

In the days that were too eventful (or I just typed too much for them), I underline the important parts tumblr removed my underlines?? i’ll think of something sorry!!, and for all of it I italicize direct quotes

The Foxhole Court Timeline - Rough Draft Edition

~Friday, April 7 (approx date): Wymack, Kevin, and Andrew come to Arizona to recruit Neil

Thursday, May 11: “Neil Josten” graduates HS

Friday, May 12: Andrew picks Neil up from the airport, he meets Nicky, Aaron, and Abby, sees the court for the first time, moves in with Wymack

Saturday, May 13: Andrew nearly stabs Nicky, Neil exhausts himself trying to score on Andrew

-it gets approximate again here bc it says 5 weeks should pass but only 4 do, so I’m using context to close out the gaps-

~Tuesday, May 30: Neil goes to the court at night for the first time & finds Andrew and Kevin there; Andrew shows Neil the knives hidden in his armbands, beautiful lines such as “exy is just slightly less boring than living is” and “I’m not a math problem” “I’ll still solve you” and “this was a dream he’d have to wake up from eventually” occur

~Wednesday, May 31: Wymack tells Kevin about the district transfer, tells Neil about the Moriyamas, Neil considers running but decides to stay until the match against the Ravens

Thursday, June 1: Raven’s district transfer effective

*Sunday, June 9: foxes move into Fox Tower, Matt offers to kick Kevin’s ass for Neil (and actually does until Andrew stops him), Dan and Renee give Neil tea and cookies like the princesses they are, Andrew goes through Neil’s stuff, Andrew admits for murder w/ no chill instance #1, Neil has a lot of panic attacks and fits of dissociation and decides again to stay because “one of us has to make it” and he’s decided to pick Kevin’s life over his

*Wednesday, June 12: Seth punches Kevin as soon as Andrew leaves for his meeting with Bee

*Friday, June 14: Columbia & all that that disaster entails

*Saturday, June 15: Neil hops out the window, calls Matt to ask him to watch his stuff, hitchhikes/walks home, tells Andrew half (most) of the truth, ends on “Hope was a dangerous and disquieting thing, but he thought perhaps he liked it.”

*Monday, June 17: Kevin comes to take Neil to night practice, but Matt and Seth send him away

*Tuesday, June 18: first night practice!!, “the master?” “Coach Moriyama”; Matt waits up for Neil like the precious and pure human he is

*Wednesday, June 19: Nicky asks Aaron (in German) if he thinks Neil will ever forgive them (it’s literally been 4 days, he needs to chill), and Neil realizes that Andrew didn’t tell the others he can speak German and wonders why

*Friday, June 21: ERC makes the official announcement about Edgar Allen’s district transfer; Seth says my person favorite of his lines: “Tell me, when’s the last time anyone cried for you?”

Wednesday, August 23: Team psych evals w Bee

Thursday, August 24: First day of classes, Matt wakes Neil up for practice and the following killer exchange happens: “I’m fine.” “You say that an awful lot.”

Friday, August 25: Game day, all of the upperclassmen take turns walking Neil to/from classes, Seth and Allison sit with him at lunch and tell him about the Renee/Andrew betting pool, Neil finds out Andrew goes sober on game nights, Nicky apologises for the Columbia thing

GAME V BRECKENRIDGE JACKALS: Seth and Kevin fight on court 13 minutes into the game (no one took Nicky’s bet so he doesn’t win anything), Neil goes in at 20 minutes for Seth (”Hey Pinnocchio, time to run. This one’s for you.”), Matt punches Gorilla for Kevin and then runs and hides behind Andrew for safety (these nerds are such children I love them), Neil begins to feel a burning hatred for the jackals: “Gorilla had been trying to hurt Kevin’s hand his first day back on the court, which was unbelievably cruel. Neil hoped Matt had bruised some ribs with that punch.”; Neil scores his first goal!!; final score 7-9 loss (not bad tbh), and then the upperclassmen/Neil stay up all night partying like the nerds they are, I love these kids

Saturday, August 26: Kathy’s show, Neil’s 1st time on the bus, “Kevin’s smile was a brittle and bitter thing”; Kevin threatens to cut Neil off from night practices to force him to go on Kathy’s show (and Andrew laughs and calls Neil an idiot); “As complicated as Neil’s obsession with Kevin was, one truth was undeniable: he didn’t want Kevin to hate him.”; “I think of you as one half of a whole.” “At least I have room to stretch out now.” that is a SAVAGE BURN coming from Kevin wow; but then fuckface Riko appears, fuck him 5ever; “Renee was sitting sideways in Andrew’s lap, one foot braced against the ground to keep him from shoving her off”; Neil insults Riko on national television because “his temper couldn’t stomach any more of Riko’s cruelty”; Neil is actually afraid of Riko a little/lot because “Riko had the same stare that his father did: he looked at Neil and saw only flesh that knew how to bleed”; Andrew puts himself between Riko and Neil <3; back at home Andrew punches through his window; “Oh Neil, as unpredictable as he is unreal” wow Andrew you’re falling in love already aren’t you??; “running was only an option when no one was looking” & “You gave your game to Kevin. Give your back to me.”; Columbia: “Let Andrew buy you things if he wants to. He’s not usually the gift-giving type.” & “You’re one of us, which means we’ll never push you farther than you’re willing to go.” ; Andrew disappears for 30 minutes (so he goes and does the do with Roland in the back room!!!); Wymack calls with the news about Seth’s overdose (Andrew, Kevin, and Neil have too much chill about this news “keep up with the conversation” “what about the lineup” “that apathy doesn’t bode well for your sanity”); Andrew gives Neil the key

TBH i'm confused by Rowling's math, because it says Slughorn retired in 1981 (so what, June maybe?) and Snape took up the post the same year, but it also says Slughorn retired out of fear of Dumbledore catching on after how excited he after Voldemort "died" the first time., which was Oct 1981. Did Snape actually start on Sept 1981 or did he actually start a few months into the year?? I know JK isnt great with math but this is a simple mistake thats just annoying to not fix??

It’s very annoying, because it was perfect the way it was - and the new revelation breaks canon a bit.

Snape tells Umbridge in late 1995 that he’s been teaching for 14 years, and the really pertinent passage is this in Spinner’s End, HBP:

“You ask where I was when the Dark Lord fell. I was where he had ordered me to be, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, because he wished me to spy upon Albus Dumbledore. You know, I presume, that it was on the Dark Lord’s orders that I took up the post?”

So Snape had to be at Hogwarts before Halloween 1981 - prior to Voldemort falling.  The post is interesting terminology as well; the use of the definite article suggests one role - his current role, as far as we knew, his only role.

The old thinking was:

  • Slughorn taught the 80/81 school year.
  • Slughorn retired in June/July 81 - presumably “suggested” by Dumbledore to create a vacancy which was suitable for Snape*.
  • Snape started in September 81, and took on Potions and probably Head of Slytherin too.
  • The Potters died, and Dumbledore gained a pledge from Snape to watch over Harry.  In return, Dumbledore vouched for Snape at his trial, stopping him from going to Azkaban with the other Death Eaters.

(* when I say suitable, I mean not the Defence Against the Dark Arts post, which was jinxed….no use for a spy - and one that was credible; if not DADA, then what would Dumbledore credibly hire Snape as?  Snape displays an incredible talent at Potions…it’s perhaps less plausible if he took on Muggle Studies.)

But now the suggestion is that Slughorn stayed until November 1981, and rather insinuates that he retires all of a sudden - he wasn’t planning it; it was fear that made him up and quit.  So what was Snape doing at Hogwarts for those first few weeks?  It doesn’t feel as if he was apprenticing under Slughorn to be the new Potions Master and Head of Slytherin, because leaving didn’t appear to be on the cards.

Snape also says in HBP:

“…the Dark Lord is pleased that I never deserted my post: I had sixteen years of information on Dumbledore to give him when he returned.”

This comes shortly after the other passage above, so it seems that post refers to ‘teacher at Hogwarts’ and not ‘spy’.  This is in summer 1996, so we can clearly see that Snape is dating his information gathering back to 1980.  There’s lots of ways to argue this part of the timeline (interesting, but for another post).  Given that at this point in time, Snape remains Potions Master, the use of ‘my post’ seems to me as if it was the Potions job.

He also says:  “I had a comfortable job that I preferred to a stint in Azkaban.”  He doesn’t say, “I was offered a comfortable job,” - the insinuation is that he’s already in position.

So, the upshot is, no matter when Slughorn leaves, Snape is already at Hogwarts.  If he started at the exact point that Voldemort died, then it seems odd to me that it wouldn’t be viewed with more suspicion - not just by the other teachers, but by the Ministry, parents, and Voldemort himself.

At best, I’d say that Snape had been taken on in a Potions capacity and that Slughorn was the main teacher, but Snape was a junior teacher.  Perhaps this happens for all subjects but we never see it in canon - perhaps because post-war the class sizes shrank dramatically.  Consequently, Slughorn quit and Snape was landed with the entire role.

But it’s clumsy and awkward.  Basically, JK’s created a plot hole that didn’t exist.  Annoying, and unnecessary.  The story was fine as it was.
