tillandsia recurvata

We were out shopping earlier and I saw these weird looking things on the ground underneath a tree attached to fallen branches and hanging out in the tree as well. I thought maybe it was a weird type of seed I’d never seen before or maybe a parasite. But I did a lil research and it’s actually an epiphyte! Tillandsia recurvata or ball moss. It only gains physical support from its host tree. It photosythesizes its own food, receives water vapor from the air and nitrogen from bacteria. So I guess it’s kind of an air plant basically? I can’t believe these weird lil things are alive! I hope I can get them to propagate!

I have a really cheap camera, okay, it was hard taking pictures of these stupid adorable tiny flowers.

Apparently someone I know who is also drowning in these things (I cannot emphasise enough how EVERYWHERE they are) didn’t know they have flowers.

I mean, they do just… barely. So I just kept a few balls around until they flowered.

I’ve wanted to get into airplants, but I’m too afraid to put down the money and kill them.
