Jeffrey Dahmer’s aquarium. Quote by Dahmer,“It was nice, with African cichlids and tiger barbs in it and live plants, it was a beautifully kept fish tank, very clean … I used to like to just sit there and watch them swim around, basically. I used to enjoy the planning and the set-up, the filtration, read about how to keep the nitrate and ammonia down to safe levels and just the whole spectrum of fish-keeping interested me … I once saw some puffer fish in the store. It’s a round fish, and the only ones I ever saw with both eyes in front, like a person’s eyes, and they would come right up to the front of the glass and their eyes would be crystal blue, like a person’s, real cute… It’s a fun hobby. I really enjoyed that fish tank. It’s something I really miss.”
Stay AWAY from Pet Extreme in Livermore, CA. This is the state of their tanks EVERY DAY. Employees add new fish to tanks that have sick and dead fish in them. The tanks are NEVER cleaned. Fish are kept in cramped, disgusting tanks. This is unquestionably cruel and inhumane. There is no reason for these conditions. This is blatant, needless neglect. These tanks would only take a few minutes to clean/remove the DEAD ANIMALS rotting inside. There are actual skeletons, having been there so long that the flesh has fallen away.
Employees don’t know even the basics of aquarium care and claim bettas can live in bowls, >1 gallon tanks, etc. Bettas need 2.5 gallons+ and NO FISH SHOULD EVER BE KEPT IN A BOWL. They also claim that fish will only grow to the size of their aquariums. This is NOT TRUE as you can see with the Red Oscar in an undersized tank.
I will have to make a separate post on the condition of their birds. Their birds are visibly unwell and at least one person was sold a bird that had a massive, visible tumor and died shortly after purchase. The cages are also far overstocked. I purchased a cockatiel here several years ago, getting him the day the birds arrived in the store. There were 10+ young birds in a cage that I wouldn’t recommend keeping more than 2 in.
I have contacted the company about this and not only have they never responded, but conditions worsen every time I’ve checked. This is NOT a massive corporation with hundreds of stores; this company is small and only operates a handful of stores in the Bay Area. Clearly, whoever is in charge just simply doesn’t care.
Don’t support this business with your patronage. Don’t buy animals or pet supplies from them. Don’t give them the money to continue this practice. I know it’s tempting to “rescue” animals from here: don’t. It only gives them money and incentive to stock more animals and continue to abuse and neglect them.

SHUT THE MOTHERHECKING DOOR ANON I AM LIVING
Toshinori is amazed at how open the world is compared to when he was growing up.
People like Toshinori…they’ve always existed. And before modern society, they were even well accepted. But when Toshinori was growing up, you either pretended you weren’t who you really are, or you changed yourself so completely that no one knew that you were ever anything different.
That’s not to say society is perfect these days: the general mocking sneers of towards Tiger, the whispered barbs, they show that while society has taken a step forward, it’s a baby step at most.
Toshinori had accepted long ago: that choosing to live as himself would mean that he would likely never find love.
But Shōta…Shōta didn’t accept that. Shōta pursued him, flirted and teased him: at first Toshinori thought it was mocking: making fun of the old man. Then, Toshinori thought that somehow Shōta knew his secret and became stiff and distant every time Shōta drew near. But Shōta is clever, and when his methods weren’t working he switched them for light teasing and meaningless words to…to genuine wooing. Quiet nights spent grading papers together, tea made just how he likes it, quiet kindnesses.
I’m an aquatic specialist at my work and here are some things that customers say to me.
This started cause a customer asked me for a “Dory” fish today for her 10 gallon, freshwater, uncycled tank. Sorry nope nope. (And it begins)
Common Plecos in Bad Homes (aka anything less than a 150 gallon tank:
-I appreciate that you care but I’ve had them before, my longest one lived for 5 months.
-You know what. I’ve heard that from the internet and you guys but I’ve never had one grow that large, so you guys are incorrect.
Why can’t you give me 3 (half a gallon tub) and let me go on my way.Its for the kids to play with20 gallon is too big for one fish, are you sure I can’t have 10?
-I heard if you put them in a small container they’ll stay small anyways
-But having one kind of fish is boring in my 10, can’t I just get one of each? (Neon/Skirt/Emperor etc.)
-They don’t HAVE to school do they?
-Well you guys have them in cups, I’m giving them a better home (0.75 gallon tank/nofilter/no heater)
Darnest things customers say: That literally makes my heart ache.
-Fish are disposable petsThey(Tiger Barbs) were so aggressive so I flushed them down the toilet (alive)I’m so sick of this frog, can I flush it down the toilet? Does that make me a bad person? What can survive in a bowl?
I had a customer come in to draw this picture and ask if we carry these fish. He couldn’t give me a name or any real information, and looked at me like i was stupid when I said that I wasn’t familiar with the fish.
I bought a 55 almost a year ago now with full intentions of revamping it. Of course I have yet to, but I’m taking a vacation soon for a week that’ll allow me to.
I’ve been playing around with stocks recently and I want some input on what fishblr thinks. (all these fish im about to list are compatable w/eachother in terms of chemistry. please inform me if they are not behaviorally compatable)The tank will be outfitted with a Rena filstar XP3, overkill, I know.
Option #1:Green/Albino/Regular strains of tiger barb, turquoise rainbowfish, white swordtail, blue platy, brochis corydoras or venezuelan black corydoras.
Option#2:Tanganyikan cichlid tank. I don’t know about stock.
Option #3:Catfish only tank 1x plec, 3 x species of corydoras, porthole cat, raphael cat, pictus cats. Not sold on this one, I think I’d rather have fish that would utilize the entire tank and get a custom built for a cat only
Option #4:Discus tank w/maybe some blue king tetra and corydoras
So I want to do a post on the importance of quarantine and how to safely acclimate fish. I’ve seen some posting in fishblr that don’t seem to know about these things, so I thought it might be a good way to help them learn, so that they can have healthier fish and safer situations for them in the future. (It seems like there are a lot of newer fish keepers in fishblr now, especially those that only have experience with solitary fish like bettas, that may have never encountered these things.)
But right now I have fish in quarantine that are due to be moved out soon, perfect timing, so….I was thinking about doing a video? I’m just not sure if anyone would actually want to watch it. New fishblr doesn’t really know me.
But, algae or not, it would almost certainly include a look at Dexter’s tank, the 150g, so there’s that. I have two species in QT at the moment, and one is tiger barbs for that tank. Its that, or the wcm minnows for my hillstream tank. I’m debating putting them in something like a breeder box though, so they can grow out a bit, which is not as great for a video. (Concerned about my biggest highway cat trying to eat them. They are babies, he’s full grown. Being directly together at or close to adult size would be better.)
Anyways, would anyone be interested in me making a video about this?
